Many museums devote special exhibitions to the history of the Romanov dynasty. An unexpected twist on the topic was proposed by the organizers of the exhibition, which opened with the support of the International Numismatic Club museum - the role of gold coins in the economy of Tsarist Russia and in creating the image of the monarchy itself. More than 700 exhibits are presented, including from the collections of the Kremlin Museums, the Historical Museum and private collections. Valeria Kudryavtseva reports.
The exhibition "Gold Coins in the History of the Romanov Dynasty" is a rare attempt to tell the history of the Romanov dynasty through coins. 300 years of rule - from 1613 to 1917. Collections of the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the State Historical Museum, private collection of Vagit Alekperov. The opening was attended by the Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky.
“Numismatics is a delicate matter. As we know, there are many fakes on the numismatic market. Expertise is required, a narrow professional approach to this matter is required. And now here all lovers of collecting, numismatists can please their souls, see what, perhaps, “We haven’t seen it on such a scale before,” commented Russian Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky.
The first Russian chervonets were called that because they were minted from red gold, then purchased in China. The first gold coin from Russian mines appeared only in 1832. Half-imperial is a five-ruble coin. Many historical facts force us to take a fresh look at the history of Russia. Preparations for the exhibition lasted more than a year.
“Here, coins and banknotes are not only collected, but also studied, published, and collectors who possess these extraordinary treasures position themselves in the same way as museum employees position themselves - as curators,” said Elena Gagarina, director of the Kremlin Museums.
During the Romanov era, coins were an indispensable attribute of religious and state rituals. These are the so-called weight gain on icons. They hanged themselves in gratitude for the miracles. Showered - they showered monarchs when leaving the cathedral after the crowning ceremony. Royal awards are the basis of the Russian award system. One of the rarest exhibits is the 1716 Chervonets, the only Russian gold coin with an inscription in Latin. Among the most expensive are the rarest gold ones, issued at the end of the 19th century as samples during the preparation of Witte’s financial reform in only a few copies.
“An idea arose - to move away from the usual name of the denomination “ruble” by analogy with French franc coins and call the main monetary unit russ. And in order to represent the embodiment of this idea, separate test coins were produced in denominations of 5, 10 and 15 russ,” - said the exhibition curator Alexandra Mityaeva.
The Dutch were very surprised at one time when they noticed their own coins on the European market - ducats, but of Russian origin. Counterfeits were minted for the secret operations of the empire. Buying gold in Holland was more expensive.
"What is a coin? On the one hand, this is, first of all, the history of the state. On the other hand, the history of personalities. It often happens that in addition to the coin, in addition to the images on it of either this or that sign, or coat of arms, other sources on the history of this or that There is no other personality,” emphasized the director of the Historical Museum, Alexey Levykin.
The exhibition is supplemented with digital content. On the tablet you can turn over any coin and find out its history. For those who are ready to look at coins as more than just money, the exhibition presents: an elegant Faberge knife, decorated with a gold palace coin, a women's bracelet and a gift cup inlaid with coins. Human imagination has always seen gold money as something more.

For the first time in recent times, gold coins from the entire period of the Romanov dynasty from 1613 to 1917 are being exhibited - more than 700 coins in total. The basis of the exhibition is coins from the collection of the Museum of the International Numismatic Club, supplemented by rare specimens from the numismatic collections of the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the State Historical Museum and private collections. Thanks to this unique collaboration, it was possible to assemble a comprehensive collection of gold coins from the period of the Romanov dynasty.
Gold coins that were distributed at the imperial court, grant and commemorative coins. Among the rarest exhibits is a chervonets of 1716, the only Russian gold coin with an inscription in Latin, issued specifically for foreign payments during Peter I’s trips to Europe, as well as “famous coins” - counterfeit Dutch ducats minted by the St. Petersburg Mint for secret operations of the Russian Empire.
