To Cambodia by bus
This method is the most popular for visaran (Vietnam visa renewal) and for visiting Cambodia in general. It is also the cheapest. The cost of a ticket from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh starts from $9 (the minimum we found). We took a ticket from Nha Trang to Phnom Penh with a transfer in Ho Chi Minh City (there are no direct buses). We bought tickets from TheSinhTourist and they cost us about $38 for two people one way. What we got in time:
- Nha Trang - Ho Chi Minh City 10 hours (we chose a night flight)
- Ho Chi Minh City - Phnom Penh 2.5 hours to the border and another 3 hours to the capital
If you want to visit Cambodia from Mui Ne or Vung Tau, the time to Ho Chi Minh City will be 5 and 2 hours, respectively. From Nha Trang our bus arrived an hour earlier than the planned time and we felt like squeezed lemons, we really wanted to sleep))) Since our next bus was in an hour (I deliberately chose so that we would have little time in Ho Chi Minh City), we did not have time relax a lot and already relaxed on the bus to Cambodia. All buses are comfortable: with air conditioning, free water and internet.
At the bus station we met some guys who were traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap. Brave guys) there is no direct bus to Siem Reap and they still had to change trains in Phnom Penh. As a result, they spent about 22-24 hours on the road. I don’t yet take into account the waits between buses and at the border. We only had about an hour in Ho Chi Minh City, and they had about 2.5 hours. Hope they got there well.
Immediately after boarding the bus, around 7 am, our passports were collected and $35 was collected ($30 for the visa and $5 for the services of our guide-accompany). While we were driving to the border, our guide-controller filled out all the forms for us to clear customs. It seemed to me that we got to the border very quickly, a little less than 2.5 hours, and already at the beginning of 10 we were at the border. We passed the Vietnamese border very quickly, maybe 10-15 minutes. The accompanying guide gave our passports to the customs officers, they stamped our entry and we moved on.
Vietnamese border. Safety
Vietnamese border. Passport control
We spent about 20 minutes at the Cambodian border.
The short duration is due to the fact that we need to leave all our fingerprints. But still very fast and efficient. In total, the road from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, including border crossing, takes 6 hours.
We didn't fill out any paperwork at all. In my memory, this is the first border where we had to follow a guide and that’s it. It's very convenient and you don't have to worry about anything. The border was crossed as standard at Bavet.
Abroad, we had a short stop for lunch, where we bought chopped pineapples and green mango with salt and pepper for $1. Once you cross the border you don't expect much, but the Cambodian border is a paradise for casino lovers! Hotel-casinos begin as soon as you step foot on the red soil of Kampuchea (the old name of the Kingdom).
We arrived in Phnom Penh not at the main bus station (located near the station and the central market), as expected, but somewhere a couple of kilometers away. When purchasing tickets to Phnom Penh, check where the bus arrives. It’s good that Google maps worked offline and we were able to find our way around. As soon as we got off the bus, we were surrounded by tuk-tuk drivers. At first we refused, but the rain decided everything for us and, having paid $3, we were already rushing to our hotel.
Welcome to Cambodia!
Return road from Cambodia to Vietnam
There is a lot of information on how to get to Cambodia, but I couldn’t find any information on how to get back. Although this information is the most important and valuable. Now I'll tell you why.
Since on the way to Cambodia almost everyone foreign tourists you need a visa, the guide-accompany is very fussed with this. In the opposite direction, you may be the only tourists who will need a visa. Questions will be minimized if you already have a Vietnamese visa in your passport, but if you open it at the border (like us), then get ready for surprises)
We bought tickets to Ho Chi Minh City in Phnom Penh at one of the street travel agencies. Bus schedule from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City
The most popular bus company is Mekong, but the schedule did not suit us - 8:30 was too early and 14:00 was too late. Therefore, we chose the Kumho Samco Buslines company, their buses are comfortable: there is a footrest and the seats recline well, somewhat similar to Vietnamese slipping buses. The transfer arrived for us 30 minutes before departure. This time it was a taxi, and not the usual tuk-tuk.
Our taxi to the Phnom Penh-Ho Chi Minh City bus
The bus turned out to be not as new as on the way to Phnom Penh, but with the same amenities.
Bus Ho Chi Minh City - Phnom Penh
As many people write, the roads in Cambodia are not very paved, so the road from/to Phnom Penh from the border takes up to 4 hours. We also need to take into account the time it takes to cross the border. We got from Phnom Penh in about 3.5 hours.
We knew that to obtain a Vietnamese visa at the border we would need the original invitation.
More information about the Vietnam visa in the updated article -.
We ordered an invitation in advance in Nha Trang on the second line opposite the Omar restaurant. They made it for us in 5 days. It turned out that such an invitation is issued individually, and not as is the case with an invitation upon arrival, where you see everyone who requested a visa during the same period
There was a planned stop for 20 minutes before the border. Our bus guide was not very good at English; with gestures and fragments of phrases we managed to understand that we had to go to the border ourselves and get a visa. They will pick us up on the Vietnamese side. Here I briefly described our conversation, which lasted about 10 minutes, but time flies. Since we had to go to the border ourselves, we decided to take a suitcase with us as well. Yes, just in case
As soon as we left the bus, we were immediately surrounded by resourceful Khmers offering to take us to the border on a moped for only $2 per person. My suitcase and I didn’t want to ride on the same bike, and the drivers’ intrusiveness only put us off. I was not at a loss and began to slow down the cars passing by. It's like a mini hitchhiking stop. We had to wait less than a minute and we were already driving away in a comfortable car. You should have seen the faces of the moped drivers)))
We crossed the Cambodian border quickly. We were only asked for an invitation to Vietnam and that’s all. The distance between border points is 3-5 minutes on foot and we are already at the Vietnamese border. As you remember from the photo above, the border is so-so)
The queue for obtaining a visa is small, but the employee is not even in a hurry to somehow speed things up and sit quietly and relax. He constantly needed to go out somewhere and talk to someone. For us, the problem was a Japanese citizen who came to the border and was expecting a miracle. He didn’t speak Vietnamese at all, and the only documents he had were a passport. They sorted things out with him for a long time. It was very hot and stuffy in the building; powerful fans did not help. As a result, I lost consciousness... It was scary, considering that we still had to long haul to Nha Trang. But don’t worry too much, I moved away quickly enough. People in line helped me. But the Vietnamese didn’t even think to call a doctor or nurse. Sorry, but there will be no selfie of a broken nose)))
My fall did not speed up our getting a visa or passing through passport control (I stood in line like everyone else with a broken nose). Oh, I completely forgot to mention. Our bus driver, even when we were standing in line to get a visa, told us that he couldn’t wait for us any longer and we could leave on the next bus. Shock! Curtain! Fainting!
Maybe it’s better that I still had time to come to my senses. At the border we waited another hour for our company's (Kumho) bus. The Cambodian Internet worked for us and we checked on the carrier’s website that the next bus left at 13:00 and should be at the border at about 17:00. Guys, for a minute we left at 11:00! From 16:30 we waited for the bus for another hour... then, tired of waiting, we started asking the drivers of other buses (of which there were a lot) if they would take us to Ho Chi Minh City. A couple of buses didn’t suit us; they weren’t going to Pham Ngu Lao Street, but the Giant Ibis bus was just going where we needed it. For $10 he agreed to let us down. We were in Ho Chi Minh City around 20:00. The return journey from Phnom Penh took us instead of 6 hours, as much as 9.
I had already come to my senses and I didn’t want to stay in Ho Chi Minh City for one night at all. We went in search of tickets to Nha Trang. Just opposite where we were dropped off was the Hanh Cafe office and their last bus to Nha Trang was at 21:00. We arrived on the eve of the Chinese New Year and the rush for tickets has already begun. Although the celebration in 2017 will begin on January 27, within a week all bus companies begin to raise prices. Our ticket from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang cost the same as from Nha Trang to Phnom Penh
Phew, this is what the road from Vietnam to Cambodia and back looks like. My advice to you: if you are traveling back from Cambodia to Vietnam, take better ticket to the border, and then on the Vietnamese side, take any bus. Another option is to buy tickets Phnom Penh - Kuala Lumpur - Ho Chi Minh City. There will be less stress, and at the same time look at the CL!
Have a nice trip!

TO human casualties led to an attack of elephant rage in India: two wild elephants immediately burst into the city of Mysore, in the state of Karnataka in the south of the country, and began to destroy it. One operated on the territory of a women's college, the other in residential areas, the BBC reports.
The fact of the death of one of the townspeople has been reliably established: a 55-year-old resident of the Bambu-Bazaar district, a security guard by profession, came out of his house in response to the noise, and an elephant trampled him to death, the minister said higher education State of S.A. Ramdas.
The animals went on a rampage for three hours. They came to Mysore from a forest located 35 kilometers away. The authorities closed everything educational institutions in the city and urged residents not to go out and throw stones at the elephants, so as not to anger them even more.
In the shocking video footage obtained by the Indian television company New Delhi Television, they even had to reduce the clarity of the image of an elephant that was dragging along the pavement, tossing and trampling a man. The elephant also killed a cow on a city street and tried to race a bus.
To cope with mad elephants, it was necessary to use their trained relatives, on whose backs armed men sat. Their guns fired syringes containing sleeping pills. Eventually, local zoo workers euthanized the elephants and took them in. The animals will subsequently be released into the wild, Minister Ramdas said.
Meanwhile, two more wild elephants are running around somewhere in the city's vicinity, authorities warn.
“The uncontrolled expansion of agricultural land, the increasingly intensive movement of people and cars along the traditional elephant migration route lead to the fact that wild elephants are entering villages and towns in search of food and shelter," said one local official.
Elephant attacks on humans are not that uncommon in Karnataka. However, it is not customary to kill these animals there: the elephant is one of the symbols of the state. Therefore, the elephant population is constantly growing. The number of clashes with people, who take more and more resources from elephants, is also increasing.
With the decrease in forest area, elephants are left without their traditional habitat. In desperation, they not only kill people, but also trample crops and destroy houses. As a result of “human-elephant conflict,” as conservationists are already calling this situation, wildlife, elephants feel literally driven into concentration camps, notes The Daily Mail, so they attack their “jailers.”
About two thousand elephants live in the forest surrounding Mysore, one of the experts explained. This is the largest population of Indian elephants. More and more often they come out of the forest in search of food.
The panic that the townspeople greeted the elephants made it difficult for the authorities to neutralize the jungle aliens. “If the police and the forest department had not been bothered, they would have solved the problem quickly enough - but people behave very stupidly, gather in crowds and poison animals - and then the animals are called wild. They find themselves in an unfamiliar place, they are frightened by noise, crowds, and that’s why they behave this way,” the expert said.
