Shelter from the rain. Where can you hide from the rain?
There are quite a few gloomy weather lovers who would happily spend hours wandering around in the rain. Others, who are still the majority, prefer not to get wet, but to keep their clothes dry, and also want to avoid a possible cold.
Rainy weather is one of the most common causes of colds. Therefore, it is not recommended for an unprepared person to get wet in the rain. A common cold can lead to serious complications, so you should take care of the right clothes and shoes if you urgently need to go outside in heavy rain, and, of course, take with you the most necessary accessory in such weather - an umbrella.
Where to hide from the rain in the city
Of course, the first thing that should come to mind is to hide under an umbrella. But what if you didn’t have an umbrella with you? Of course, look for a place where it is dry and comfortable. If the rain is very heavy, and even more so in the fall, and cold water is pouring from the sky, you should not test your health and seek shelter. You can take shelter from the rain in an entrance hall, a store, a taxi or a bus.
In addition, if your clothes or shoes are already wet, discomfort has appeared, you should look around to see if there is a cafe or restaurant nearby. Hot coffee or tea with lemon will not only help you warm up and feel better, but will also prevent possible health problems.
Where to hide from the rain in the forest or in nature
It is also well known from the life safety course that you should never hide under lonely trees during a thunderstorm. A lightning strike can lead to the most irreparable consequences. You cannot stand at full height in an open field during a thunderstorm, since lightning always strikes the tallest object, which in this case is a person. In this case, you need to find a ditch or depression in the ground and squat down. You should also not swim in bodies of water during a thunderstorm or use mobile phones.
You can hide from the rain in the forest under trees with spreading crowns that are close to each other. If the rain is accompanied by gusty strong winds, it is recommended to hide under the largest trees with a thick trunk. You should not choose coniferous trees with cones that can be blown off by the wind.
Thus, it is better to avoid walking during the rain. But after the rain, walking is even very useful, especially in the forest. Ozone-rich air can provide significant health benefits.
Forecasters advised Muscovites not to wait for a hot summer: the weather will be rainy and cloudy. But there is no need to wrap yourself in a blanket at home and become despondent, because in the capital you can find entertainment even in hiding..

The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Vladimir Puchkov, spoke about the impending adverse weather conditions. He noted that the level of tension in July will not be inferior to the first month of summer and called on rescuers to “professionally work through all issues to protect the lives and health of people.” During rainstorms, the department usually sends SMS messages to Muscovites warning about possible falls of trees and weakly reinforced structures.
There are many reasons to take a walk in the forest with friends: clean fresh air, inspiring landscapes, the absence of cars and city bustle around.. Lovers of hiking and long journeys, like no one else, know that a person who lives in harmony with nature is also in harmony with yourself.
True, nature is unpredictable, and sometimes we find ourselves unprepared for its surprises. Rain, snow, hail - how to hide from them on a country trip? If you have thoroughly prepared for the trip and have an awning in your backpack, then building a canopy against rain or snow will not be difficult.
How to make a canopy using an awning?
It is unlikely that those who happen to have this device with them need detailed advice on its use. But since an awning is the first and best thing from which a canopy can be made, it is still worth devoting a few lines to it. This piece of travel equipment is a rectangle of waterproof material. Typically, it is used in three ways:
All modern tourist tents are equipped with awnings that can be used as a canopy from the rain if, for example, there is not enough space for everyone in the tent or it is necessary to equip a canopy for storing firewood.
Plastic film as cover
If you didn’t have an awning with you, but you grabbed or found a piece of cellophane on the way - now this stuff is found everywhere, use it as a canopy according to the same principle as an awning.
Sometimes you have to stay in the forest for a longer time, in which case you should make a more reliable shelter. The picture shows exactly how the film should be used; large, thick trash bags will also work. We place a crossbar between two trees, perpendicular to it, but at an angle relative to the ground, we place branches, trying to ensure that they cling to each other with knots. We place a film on top of the structure, if its dimensions allow, it is advisable to sprinkle the lower edges with earth or at least tie it down.

How to make a natural rain shelter?
It’s quite simple to build a camping shelter from available materials, but what if you didn’t have any film or bags with you and couldn’t find them? Modern materials have been widely used not so long ago, so now, as in ancient times, you can do without them and build a shelter from natural materials with your own hands. The frame for a canopy from rain and snow will look the same as in the case of polyethylene: a wooden frame supported by two trees. But the more crossings there are, the better the design will be. The top of the hut is covered with branches and spruce branches, trying to cover all the holes. Such a hut, built according to all the rules, will reliably protect lovers of hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation not only from rain, but also from snow and wind.
You can learn more about building a hut from natural materials by watching this video:
Making a shelter in the forest is not so difficult, but remember that a hiking backpack should be equipped with some things that will help tourists during travel and extreme situations. These are matches, a knife and a compass. It is also advisable to have with you a rope and small pieces of it for fastening something, a compact hatchet or a sapper shovel. Dry fuel will help with autumn walks: with its light weight and volume, it can make lighting a fire much easier in rainy weather.
Hello, Eduard.
Few tourists are lucky enough to avoid rain during their trek. Often such weather is accompanied by lightning strikes, which is a potential danger. In this case, getting wet to the skin is a secondary problem. The main thing is to reduce the risk of being struck by lightning. Please note that the higher the humidity and air temperature, the greater the danger posed by a thunderstorm. If lightning and thunder are seen and heard almost simultaneously, you should immediately take all precautions by following the tips below.
If lightning occasionally flashes 10 seconds or more after thunder, then you have no particular reason to panic. In this case, you can safely take refuge inside a tent or, throwing on a raincoat, hide under a broad-leaved tree. Shelter in the form of a tarpaulin or any other moisture-proof material is also ideal.
What to do if there is a thunderstorm nearby
If thunderclouds are closer, strictly follow the following points:
- Under no circumstances seek shelter under lonely or very tall trees. They are most often struck by lightning. For this reason, you should be separated from them by at least 30 meters.
- As you know, smoke has a higher thermal conductivity than air. Because of this, lighting a fire for warmth during a thunderstorm is not the best idea.
- You should not seek shelter under trees that have already been struck by lightning. The ground under such a tree retains high electrical conductivity. If there are several such trees, you should move away from this area.
- Interesting fact: lightning most often strikes pine, linden, oak, poplar and beech. It is best to seek shelter under a maple, birch or hazel tree.
- For shelter, choose low-growing trees that stand closely together and have a fluffy crown.
- The tent should be placed in the thick of trees, away from open areas.
- During a thunderstorm, you should sit on some kind of insulator, polyethylene or bedding inside the tent.
- Change into dry or well-wrung out clothes. After this, curl into the fetal position.
Thunderstorm near a pond, in a field and in the mountains
Lightning strikes the coastline very often. Therefore, I recommend moving at least 100 meters away from the reservoir. If you are directly on the water, then immediately moor to the shore. The risk of lightning striking a vessel is extremely high.
If lightning catches you in the middle of a field, then the best option would be to look for the lowest place in the area - a hole or ravine. Lie down, wrapped in a tarp or plastic, and wait for the storm to pass.
A thunderstorm in the mountains is no less dangerous than in a field or on a pond. Most often, the discharge strikes the peaks or adjacent cliffs. Therefore, the most reasonable option would be to immediately descend. If you do not have this opportunity, then you should lower all metal equipment down on a rope, away from you and the tent. It is better to stay 2 - 3 meters away from the rock. The ideal shelter in this situation would be a grotto or cave.
I hope my answer was helpful to you!
Best regards, Valery.
