Distribution and ecology
It grows naturally in western North America. It is found in montane forests along the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Oregon, Nevada, California and northern Mexico.
Botanical description
A large tree up to 70 m high (in exceptional cases up to 81 m) and with a diameter of up to 1.2-1.8 m.
This pine has grayish-green twisted needles, 12 cm long.
The resin contains a large amount of sugar, which is why in the USA Lambert pine is also called Sugar Pine - Sugar Pine.
It is distinguished by giant cones, on average 25-50 cm long (the size of individual cones can reach up to 66 cm). The seeds are 10-12 mm in size (i.e. approximately the same size as Siberian cedar [[K:Wikipedia:Articles without sources (country: Lua error: callParserFunction: function "#property" was not found. Excerpt characterizing Lambert's Pine
“How is this possible?!..” I asked, stunned. – Did you also know that they were not Jews? – Caraffa nodded again. – But you don’t talk about this anywhere?.. Nobody knows about it! But what about the TRUTH, Your Holiness?!..
“Don’t make me laugh, Isidora!” Karaffa laughed sincerely. – You are a real child! Who needs your “truth”?.. A crowd that has never looked for it?!.. No, my dear, Truth is needed only by a handful of thinkers, and the crowd should simply “believe”, well, but in what - this no longer matters meanings. The main thing is that people obey. And what is presented to them is already secondary. TRUTH is dangerous, Isidora. Where the Truth is revealed, doubts appear, well, and where doubts arise, war begins... I am waging MY war, Isidora, and so far it gives me true pleasure! The world has always been based on lies, you see... The main thing is that this lie should be interesting enough so that it can lead “narrow-minded” minds... And believe me, Isidora, if at the same time you begin to prove to the crowd the real Truth that refutes them "faith" in who knows what, you will be torn apart by this same crowd...
– Is it really possible for such an intelligent person as Your Holiness to arrange such self-betrayal?.. You burn innocent people, hiding behind the name of this same slandered, and equally innocent God? How can you lie so shamelessly, Your Holiness?!..
“Oh, don’t worry, dear Isidora!” Karaffa smiled. – My conscience is completely calm! I did not erect this God, and I will not overthrow him. But I will be the one who will cleanse the Earth of heresy and fornication! And believe me, Isidora, on the day when I “leave” there will be no one left to burn on this sinful Earth!
I felt bad... My heart jumped out, unable to listen to such nonsense! Therefore, quickly getting ready, I tried to avoid the topic he liked.
- Well, what about the fact that you are the head of the most holy Christian church? Don't you think that it would be your duty to reveal to people the truth about Jesus Christ?..
– It is precisely because I am his “deputy on Earth” that I will continue to remain silent, Isidora! That's why...
I looked at him, eyes wide open, and could not believe that I was really hearing all this... Again - Caraffa was extremely dangerous in his madness, and it was unlikely that there was a medicine somewhere that could help him .
Pinus lambertiana
Lambert pine (Canadian sugar pine, sugar pine, Oregon yellow pine) is a huge tree; the most gigantic of all pine trees, reaching from 50 to 100 m in height and from 3 to 6 m in diameter, with light brown smooth bark that cracks into small sections with age. Life expectancy is on average 600-700 years, maximum up to 900. The trunk is immaculately straight, highly branched. The branches are whorled, horizontal, slightly hanging, forming an ovoid crown.
Young shoots are chocolate-colored. There are five needles in a bunch; they are rigid, sharply triangular, cutting at the edges, pointed, bright green, with bluish longitudinal lines, more clearly visible on young needles. The needles are from 9 to 11 cm long. The cones hang on cylindrical light orange stalks, reaching 30 to 50 cm in length and 8 to 11 cm in thickness.
The scales of the cone are leathery, wedge-shaped, flattened; the scale shield is slightly thickened, convex on the back, smooth, with hard edges and a wide, strongly blunted keel. The nut-shaped seed is large, smooth, black, elongated-ovate; 15 mm long and 9-10 mm wide, with a not completely forked, long, brown, oblong blunt wing. Cotyledons from 13 to 15. The weight of the nut is 5-10% less than that of Siberian pine.
This pine grows in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the states of Oregon, Nevada and California, western North America and Northern Mexico, under natural conditions.
Named in honor of the English botanist Aylmer Bourke Lambert, a researcher and expert on species of the genus Pine. It is noteworthy that in England there is a memorial plaque to the sugar pine cone: “The largest life-size cone in the world.”
It is unpretentious in relation to the soil, but especially loves loose, sandy, fresh clay soil. Can tolerate short-term drops in temperature down to -33 C. Propagated by roots, seeds, and cuttings. It grows very slowly, especially in its youth, which is observed even in its homeland, and only the oldest trees grow rapidly.
It suffers greatly and even dies from hard soil; better results are possible only in particularly favorable conditions, namely when this pine is cultivated in soils corresponding to those in which it grows wild, or in countries with a milder climate. Currently, the greatest danger to sugar pine is blister rust, which attacks and kills seedlings.
The seeds, like those of the cedar tree cones, are suitable for human consumption. The seed is edible, sweet in taste, readily collected by residents. The liquid obtained by dry distillation of this wood does not have the qualities of resin characteristic of the sap of a living tree; it receives a sweet taste, similar to sugar or manna, instead of which it is sometimes used; it is also recommended as a cough remedy. This explains the name: “sugar pine”. The resin tastes even better than sugar maple; due to its laxative properties, you can’t eat too much of it.
Indians gnaw its seeds at their leisure. If they collect a lot, they grind it into flour and bake flat cakes. If the trunk burns during a fire, a sweet, sugary syrup flows from it. Indians use it instead of sugar. It hardens on the bark in hard pieces, like rosin.

- The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad in the Sierra National Forest is named after the Sugar Pine pine. (English)Pierre, taking off his hat, bowed respectfully in front of Kutuzov.
“I decided that if I report to your lordship, you can send me away or say that you know what I am reporting, and then I won’t be killed...” said Dolokhov.
- So-so.
“And if I’m right, then I will benefit the fatherland, for which I am ready to die.”
- So-so…
“And if your lordship needs a person who would not spare his skin, then please remember me... Maybe I will be useful to your lordship.”
“So... so...” repeated Kutuzov, looking at Pierre with a laughing, narrowing eye.
At this time, Boris, with his courtly dexterity, advanced next to Pierre in the proximity of his superiors and with the most natural look and not loudly, as if continuing the conversation he had begun, said to Pierre:
– The militia – they directly put on clean, white shirts to prepare for death. What heroism, Count!
Boris said this to Pierre, obviously in order to be heard by his Serene Highness. He knew that Kutuzov would pay attention to these words, and indeed His Serene Highness addressed him:
-What are you talking about the militia? - he said to Boris.
“They, your lordship, in preparation for tomorrow, for death, put on white shirts.”
- Ah!.. Wonderful, incomparable people! - said Kutuzov and, closing his eyes, shook his head. - Incomparable people! - he repeated with a sigh.
- Do you want to smell gunpowder? - he said to Pierre. - Yes, a pleasant smell. I have the honor to be an admirer of your wife, is she healthy? My rest stop is at your service. - And, as often happens with old people, Kutuzov began to look around absently, as if he had forgotten everything he needed to say or do.
Obviously, remembering what he was looking for, he lured Andrei Sergeich Kaisarov, the brother of his adjutant, to him.
- How, how, how are the poems, Marina, how are the poems, how? What he wrote about Gerakov: “You will be a teacher in the building... Tell me, tell me,” Kutuzov spoke, obviously about to laugh. Kaisarov read... Kutuzov, smiling, nodded his head to the beat of the poems.
Lambert's pine (lat. Pinus lambertiana)- widely known as “Sugar pine”, this type of Pine is awarded by people with several epithets starting with the word “most”. This is the tallest tree of all the pines growing on Earth; this is the largest, most massive tree with a thick trunk, again among the pine trees of the planet known to people; Lambert Pine has the longest cones of all conifer cones, although they are inferior in weight to the cones of Coulter Pine (“Pinus coulteri”). Inside the long cones are edible, nutritious nuts similar to our popular pine nuts. Lambert's pine is a respected species of the numerous genus Pine (lat. Pinus) of the family Pine (lat. Pinaceae), through whose vessels a sweet resin flows.
What's in your name
In the generic name of numerous coniferous trees “Pinus”, according to one version of botany, they reflected the resinousness of these plants, and according to another version, the tree’s love to settle on steep rocks, demonstrating its power and high vitality. After all, the Latin word “pix” means “resin”, and the Celtic word “pin” means rock, and both of these words could well have become the starting point for the name of the genus. In the specific epithet “lambertiana” (“Lambert”), a botanist originally from Scotland, David Douglas, who is the author of the name of another Pine - Heavy Pine (lat. Pinus ponderosa), perpetuated the human memory of another botanist, an Englishman named Aylmer Bourke Lambert. Lambert is the author of a number of works that describe many species of coniferous trees discovered by other botanists, including David Douglas.
The common name "Sugar pine" comes from the sweet resin running through the vessels of the tree. The natives of America use the resin of the Lambert Pine as a sweetener for certain dishes. According to John Muir, a Scottish-American and wildlife conservationist, the sweet resin of the Pine is preferable to maple sugar. John Muir was a big fan of the Lambert Pine, calling the tree "the king of conifers."
Description
Unfortunately, not only people love sweets, but also many insect pests. Moreover, they are not at all embarrassed by the power and strength of the plant, and therefore they calmly attack even the largest among the pines, the Sugar Pine. The officially registered 82.05 meter tall Sugar Pine, which ranks second in height among registered pine trees, fell victim to the attack of bark beetles, dying in 2007 from their gluttony. The championship in height belongs to a living tree growing in the American Yosemite National Park in California. The height of the tree is 83.45 meters.
The long straight branches of the Lambert Pine are covered with bunches of deciduous needles, consisting of five pieces of such needles ranging from 6 to 11 centimeters in length. At the ends of the branches there are large cones, under the weight of which the branches bend slightly towards the surface of the ground.
A special feature of the Pine is its large cones, the length of which varies from 25 to 50 centimeters, in exceptional cases reaching up to 66 centimeters. These are the longest cones of all conifers, but inferior in weight to the cones of the Coulter Pine (“Pinus coulteri”). Although the length of the latter is maximum 37 centimeters, the weight of Coulter Pine cones reaches 5 kg, which cannot be said about Sugar Pine cones. In any case, standing under these types of pines with an unprotected head is dangerous for human life.
The nut seeds are also quite large, up to 1.2 centimeters long. In their composition they are similar to our home-grown nutritious pine nuts and are also eaten.
