Rosca floristry. Interview: Slava Roska: “I love unexpected materials that I have never tried to work with in my life.”
Last week, a two-day master class was held in Almaty by the famous Russian florist Slava Rosk, whose work can be recognized from afar, thanks to his original weaving and the use of non-standard materials. I learned from Slava why he became a florist, what materials are used to create a bouquet, and Slava also shared his life principles. The seminar was organized by the Almaty floristry school Siberia, Oksana Sherebirova and Yulia Dialektova.
I was immediately born so crazy. If my mother were here, she would confirm. All the children swam in the river like children and made Easter cakes out of sand. And I wove a wreath of dandelions. The police constantly brought me home because I stole peonies from the flowerbed and gave them to the school teacher. I constantly carried cuttings from friends, planted new flowers, rummaged in the ground, collected beautiful sticks and twigs. And the week before the New Year, I traditionally decorated the Christmas trees for all my neighbors! I liked it that much.
My journey in floristry has begun from the teacher Stepan Zakharovich Kara, he is the former director of the arboretum, and it was this person who helped me develop my skills. He is still like a father to me, he gave me the opportunity to really understand what I want and how to move in this direction. After 20 years, I moved from Moldova to Russia and began studying at various floristic institutes with famous florists. There were many people who appeared in my life and helped in many ways, for example, the Guild of Florists and Sergei Karpunin, who lobbied for my interests and introduced me to the right people. But I myself worked very hard to develop my abilities to the maximum.
I started my career with wedding shows. I organized a fashion show where I presented my flower bags, hats and all sorts of accessories. The program had two main parts, an intermission with live music, the guests enjoyed the buffet and thanked for the gifts. I also organized floristry evenings. People came, relaxed and watched my work as I created floral masterpieces from the most ordinary things. Thus, I demonstrated my creativity, my skills. And after that, master classes and seminars began, because florists wanted to learn my technique and vision.
My specialty is as a highly qualified florist, lies in four things. First, I use those non-obvious materials that other florists do not pay attention to. Secondly, my approach is distinguished by painstaking manual work, thanks to which you can examine every detail for a long time. Third is my style, I would even say, my vision and unique ideas in floristry. And fourth is the price tag, it is quite high.
I teach florists how to make bouquets from literally nothing. Everyone will be able to create beautiful bouquets from expensive materials and flowers. But when you can make a bridal bouquet from two flowers, two sticks and one bead, it's really appreciated. I have never tried to fit my work into a specific style, but there are works by which I am recognized. These are weavings: wedding handbags, bouquets, hats, accessories.
I like the current changes in the market, finally, florists truly wanted to learn and develop! Previously, they were indifferent to what and how they did. And now florists and decorators want to become more professional, they want to surprise their clients. This change makes me very happy! Thanks to the competition that spurs me on. And it's boring to stand in one place. Firstly, florists want to do something interesting themselves. Secondly, I want to understand the technology, how a beautiful bouquet is made in a picture from the Internet.
I'm not a classicist or an avant-garde artist. I am a florist who works in different styles and first of all it depends on what the client wants. Today he wants classics, so I create classics, but with a twist. In my bouquets, everything comes down to the idea, how to present it. When I create a bouquet, I start from the person’s personality. Because everyone has their own preferences. If he doesn’t like lilies, then why offer him these lilies? If he doesn't like roses, but loves wildflowers, then you need to work in this style. When you reach the level of a professional florist, people trust and don’t ask questions, they just say “do it beautifully!”
All my floral works have meaning. You can read the story in them, as if you are looking into the soul of a person. Bouquets are like a person, and everything in him should be beautiful, both soul and body. I work in such a way that the audience wants to look at the bouquet for a long time. A classic bouquet with greenery and flowers is always beautiful. But bouquets with meaning are a thousand times cooler!
I love plant material. When I come to a city for master classes, I try, in addition to Dutch flowers, to focus my attention on what grows around me: maiden grapes, hops. After all, each region is famous for its unique vegetation. If I conduct a seminar in Moscow, then we go to the forest. We collect hogweed, bark, and wildflowers. Because sometimes you want to do something different, which will never work with Dutch flowers.
I really love working with the most common materials., with which you can do very unusual work. I notice ordinary twigs that lie under my feet, but they have an unusual bend that will make the bouquet unique.
Each branch has its place in the bouquet, every flower has its place in the bouquet, every greenery, just like a person in society. Everyone has their place, you can’t just pick it up and shove it into a bouquet without understanding the reason.
You can teach any florist my technique, for example, creping, stringing, weaving. But it’s more important to teach the combination of materials in a bouquet. For the florist to create works that are deep, meaningful, and with a lot of material. I teach people to work with materials like paints, to feel them. Feel the palette, feel the material, be able to create textures through the material, play with color. You have to feel it!
A person is a huge flash drive. A flash drive that accumulates information constantly. The more useful information we load into ourselves, the faster we gain experience. You can learn anything, including floristry. Anyone can become a master! Anyone can develop their creativity!
It's all about skill! An inexperienced person, even with expensive materials, will create such nonsense. An experienced florist can be compared to a professional chef who can create a culinary masterpiece from two eggs, a pinch of salt and flour.
You need to understand to whom you are offering this or that style.. Some people are not psychologically ready to accept a bouquet with wire weaving; to them it seems aggressive. You need to experiment slowly and get people used to it gradually.
Customizing the material to the region is a key point in the florist’s work. You need to understand what story can be introduced into a certain interior or landscape. I really love hogweed because it can be painted, sawed, cut, and glued. It does not grow in all regions. But I draw clients’ attention precisely to the original vegetation that exists in their region. I'll tell you about the city of Sochi, these are forests and real jungles. There are abandoned pine cones lying around on the roads, vines are strangling the trees, cut magnolia branches are lying around, which are good both alive and dried, and you can also observe huge thickets of pampas grass. But none of the florists pay attention to this vegetation, and in vain, you can create decorative miracles with it. I saw how the gardeners trimmed the yucca, I collected branches and made arrangements, necklaces and garlands. No one could believe that such beauty could be made from yucca.
Even a fool can order Dutch flowers. We need to work with what is available in the region. And on top of that, this will give florists the opportunity to slightly reduce their costs. I teach florists in crisis situations to quickly find replacement flowers.
It's important to me not just to make money or surprise someone with new floral delights. I want myself to like the process and the goal achieved, I want to see and feel the beauty. This is what I call proper prioritization. And good work is always rewarded.
I leave all my problems in another separate room.. Otherwise, this burden prevents me from creating. When I leave the room with problems, I find myself in a different world. I see how a flower opens, I see a twig that lies or greenery that bends beautifully and shines in the sun. You have to be able to switch.
I don't like to lie If I don’t like a person, I’ll tell him to his face. I think this is correct. I don't know how to make friends behind the scenes. I am honest to myself and to people. I don't take what's not mine. This is also written in the Bible. I can give mine away. It's probably from my mother. She told me as a child, “Be a good person. And you will be everyone’s favorite!”
I live the way I want and do what I want. This helps me achieve my goals. I have my own point of view on all events in life and always do what I think is necessary.
I am constantly developing, working on myself. And this applies not only to floristry. Without development, I would be forced to flounder in the same troubled waters. Therefore, I myself constantly attend various seminars in my specialization.
I'm inspired by... oh I'm inspired by a lot of things. I travel a lot and do it with love. I am inspired by communication with new people, there is a constant exchange of information. I make quick sketches and come to the next seminar with new ideas. That is, it turns out that I am inspired by my surroundings, by good talented people. It allows me to think and create.
Who will serve you. This needs to be taken very seriously. Follow trends. Follow what is happening in the world and are not afraid to experiment. Don't be afraid of other people's opinions. Think about whether you like it yourself, whether you feel this bouquet is yours. Don't be afraid to experiment! If we were afraid to experiment, we would always eat bread with butter and not know that there are other spreads that can be spread on bread.
And I wish the florists of Kazakhstan to develop and not stop trying bring something new to the market, despite the local mentality.
Last week, a two-day master class was held in Almaty by the famous Russian florist Slava Rosk, whose work can be recognized from afar, thanks to his original weaving and the use of non-standard materials. I enjoy... walking alone, on the plane I like to think, when no one sees, strangers don’t interfere, I sit in my corner and draw something on pieces of paper. I enjoy freedom. I even have a wing bracelet and a wing tattoo on my back. In my understanding, a person has wings, he can fly.
We have prepared for you an interview with one of the most interesting, popular and successful florists - Slava Roska, in which he shared with us the secrets of his success, his favorite techniques, materials, and also talked a little about his plans for the future and dreams.
If you had the chance to introduce us to yourself, how would you introduce Slava Rosk?
“If I were introducing myself... I don’t know... I would probably say: “Meet Slava Roska, a florist, a person who really loves his job.” This is probably how I would present myself... I love it when people present themselves a little more modestly.”
Tell us about how the florist profession appeared in your life?
“Most likely, she appeared in my life without asking me much. In general, throughout my childhood I consciously occupied myself with flowers. I attended all sorts of clubs: for young naturalists, some agronomy... any that related to plants in any way. Of course, I constantly loved poking around in all these flowers, collecting them. I even remember an incident when my parents and I went into the forest to pick spring flowers, and I fell into a mud puddle, got all dirty, but held the flowers above this mud. Since childhood, I have always carried flowers in my hands; it has been an integral part of my life. And I probably couldn’t do it without them.
Who are your teachers?
— The very first teacher who noticed my abilities, developed a feeling in me, imparted the first knowledge was Stepan Zakharovich Kara, a teacher who lives in Moldova, where I am from. And many other teachers: Gregor Lersch - one of the most famous florists in the world; master florist Thomas de Bruyne from Belgium - champion of Belgium in professional floristry; Ursula Wegener is an outstanding German master florist of international class and a teacher of the highest level; Peter Hess. I will call my current teacher the person who is still helping me develop all my qualities - this is Gregor Lersch.
There are many wicker elements in your works. Tell us why this particular technique attracts you?
“Weaving uses one of the most accessible materials and also gives the opportunity to weave a lot of things. You can intertwine threads, wires, greenery... I don’t know why weaving. I was always weaving something. Why? I don’t know... I can’t even answer this question. I can just say one thing: in many of my works I use weaving in different forms and from different materials.”
Your Christmas-themed seminar will be held very soon in Minsk, but what does “Christmas” mean to you personally?
“For me, Christmas is such a bright holiday, a family holiday. The New Year holiday is a riot of colors, a laid table and, of course, traditions, for example, giving gifts! But first of all, for me it is most likely a surge of joyful emotions! Therefore, I believe that New Year’s works should be bright and unforgettable.”
This is your second visit to us, how will this seminar differ from the previous one?
“The work will be very different, because last time we wove from herbs, and now we will work with wax and such traditional New Year’s elements as pine cones, bark, branches; with what, in principle, can be collected on the street. I can say for sure: this year there will be new forms, new ideas that we have already tested, tried, and soon they will appear on the Internet: these will be photographs, as well as videos. I think you will like these very unusual works, they will be quite unexpected. This is an experiment that we had to work a little hard for this year to come up with a program to teach everything about wax and Christmas! We have already shown so much and, of course, I want people to see something new again.”
Do your students often surprise you? Are you learning anything from them?
“I can’t say that I’m learning anything in particular. But if I see something interesting from them, I definitely try to develop it in some way. Sometimes they come up with an idea, and I try to refine it. For me, the most important thing is the exchange of information, the exchange of energy. In fact, my students teach me patience. Patience is the most important thing in life.
Why do students surprise me?.. Or can they surprise me?.. In fact, I never expect them to surprise me. I rather wait for them to absorb what I give. Of course, there are students who surprise me and that makes me happy.
But I am pleasantly surprised by the fact that people are drawn to me... There are many florists and everyone can do something good, but I don’t know why people are drawn to me. This surprises me...
It’s very nice that florists want to learn and grow up and become more professional.”
What can you say about Minsk? How do you like our city and the country as a whole?
“I liked Minsk because very kind, sympathetic, good people live there. I am very happy that in this city I have found new colleagues, new friends! This is very important for me! If a hurricane was raging outside the window, and there were good, kind people next to me, this would become the most important thing in the world for me. And everything else would not play any role.”
Your bouquets can often be seen in the hands of famous people and show business representatives. Is it difficult to please a “star”?
“Stars are people too and they want to get something interesting. Fortunately, those stars who buy flowers from us are people who communicate and behave very simply in everyday life. And sometimes they say: “Do what you think is necessary.” That's all. I’m surrounded by adequate people, I don’t know any stars who can afford to insult or humiliate someone.”
Which of the works for the “stars” became the most memorable?
“The most memorable work was a dress for the singer Slava. This order arrived just a few days before the award. RU.TV. Nastya made us very happy that she turned out to be a very open, kind person. Working with her was interesting and emotional. I will never forget how we ran onto the stage with this train of flowers, and on stage it all had to be straightened out and corrected. And she was very nervous, because she was standing on stage naked, covered only with flowers.”
Many florists, when starting to work, dream that their bouquets will be as popular as yours. What is the secret of Slava Rosca's success?
“I think success is doing what you like, doing what you like and not trying to please anyone.” First of all, don’t deceive yourself and don’t come up with something to follow someone else’s principles. It's important to be yourself. Do what you like and, of course, do not think first of all about selfish moments.
I believe that what currently hinders florists from moving forward is not the desire to work beautifully, cleanly and to surprise people, but the desire to earn money. When money becomes a goal, it usually does not come to people. You just have to work well and the money will come to you, it can’t help but come to you, it won’t pass you by if you do your work efficiently and with love.”
What qualities do you think are most important for a florist?
- “Those qualities that are important to all people: honesty, responsiveness, communication skills and, of course, it is very important not to be mean.”
Do you have a dream that you definitely want to realize? Do some kind of floral project or maybe become a world champion in floristry?
“I feel good in the status I am in now. I don’t want to prove to anyone that I’m worthy of champion status. The first thing I want to do is probably release a series of my books, I dream about it. The second is to launch a new project, which I am already preparing, but I don’t want to reveal the secret yet. And third, is creating a family. That's all that's most important to me at this stage."
In general, how do you feel about competitive floristry? Have you taken part in floristry tournaments?
“For me, the competition is probably already a thing of the past. I can say that competitions are needed solely in order to be stronger, so that the florist can make decisions in the most difficult situations and, of course, the competition strengthens the character of the florist. I treat competitions well and will always treat them well. I believe that every florist should participate in competitions because this is one of the stages in the development of a florist. Am I participating now? No, I won’t and I don’t really want to, no. I now have other plans that are more important to me at this stage of my life.”
Is there a material that you are most interested in working with?
One of the important parts of my work is the use of building materials, with their help you can do anything!
Sometimes people, looking at a composition, ask the question: “What's inside? What is at the heart of this work? And this is building material!
Therefore, you can easily find me at construction markets and construction hypermarkets, where I find skirting boards, film, wire and other interesting materials.
And, of course, I love plant materials! I really love working with herbs; this is one of my favorite materials. Tifa, bergrass, flexigrass, tigrass, steelgrass are herbs that I always add to my works, even if it is a winter composition.”
Tell us how your view of floristry has changed over time?
— “Like all florists, in fact, I started with the smallest spiral bouquet. And gradually I transformed it, making it more and more complex. But weaving has always been present in my life. I have always woven from branches, sticks and sticks, leaves. Over time, I began to feel the flower and understand it, to see beauty not in a large number of flowers, but even in just two or three flowers, in beautifully arranged branches, snags, and something else... I began to notice beauty in the simplest things.”
Your colleagues note that you are a very emotional person, is this reflected in your compositions? Or do you abstract yourself from everything while working?
“To the point that I prefer to have a snack directly in class, rather than leaving for lunch because I feel sorry for wasting those thirty to forty minutes. It always seems to me that I won’t be able to accomplish something in life, that my life will end and I won’t be able to complete all my plans. So I try to devote every five to ten to fifteen minutes to my work, to what I want to do.”
Do you have any hobbies besides floristry?
- “Yes, I have a hobby.
The first hobby is sports, which is present in my life. The gym is a place where I can reboot and be with my thoughts.
The second hobby is one of the most important parts of my life: communicating with people. This is the most favorite thing in my life. I love communicating with my friends, colleagues, students. I really love listening to them. I love sharing my secrets with them.”
Many florists who work in the commercial field create creative projects to “reboot,” but how do you deal with routine?
“I never struggle with routine: if there is a client who needs a bouquet in a package, and we can’t argue with him or explain... he gets what he decided to spend his money on.
We are lucky that in our salon we now do not think about commerce and do not depend on sales. Now we depend on something else: on the florists who come to us, on our students, on those people who appreciate our work. Therefore, in our salon you can always find something interesting and new. We are constantly changing and inventing things. And very often the bouquets that we make for display remain in the salon window and are eventually sold. Our clients are accustomed to the fact that in our salon you can find something “like that.” With pepper, with a twist. Therefore, we do not adapt to anyone, we work the way we like to work and do what we like.
But I repeat: if a person wants to buy flowers in plastic, no one will forbid him to do this or say: “No one will do this for you!” It’s up to the individual how he wants to spend his money.”
Florists often do not lead the healthiest lifestyle: they sleep little, eat as they please. You look great. How do you manage to stay in shape?
- “My way to stay fit and look good is most likely a good lifestyle and proper nutrition. Stay healthy when you are young and you will be healthy in your old age! I never choose the word “I can’t, I don’t want.” I always use the word “must”. And I always feel much better when working in a certain mode. I think that everyone should try to look good, but at the same time I do not judge anyone who cannot do this for various reasons. I believe that looking good is another key to success!
Time is the main value not only for a florist, but for any person. How do you plan your day?
“I plan my day very simply: I wake up every morning at six or six thirty in the morning. At seven I start breakfast. I always get ready for training by eight. I go in for sports until ten thirty. At 11 o'clock I always start my lesson. At 19 I finish the lesson and can devote time to friends who appear next to me: have dinner, take a walk, chat, go somewhere. I believe that a person should spend time only on the most important things in life. There is no need to waste your valuable time on some trifles and incomprehensible moments. And, of course, time is money. Therefore, the more you value your time, the more money will come to you.”
In conclusion, we ask you to wish something to our readers - beginners and experienced florists
“I want to wish florists to never feel sorry for themselves and never allow people to feel sorry for you. Pity is the worst thing that can happen in life. You must always be strong, strive for your goal, achieve what you want. Set a goal for yourself and believe; go towards the goal that you have come up with for yourself. And never put off what you can do today until tomorrow; not putting off what you can say to a person now, at this moment, rather than not saying it at all. You need to value your time and do everything on time.”
