Checking how popular your name is. The most beautiful and rare names for boys
Yes, it was interesting to read my daughter Ekaterina, she named her son in 1988, just the most popular name that year and her son’s name was Ivan in 1974 there was only one in the entire kindergarten with that name and my name is Nadezhda, it seems like a beautiful name but never used it the popularity of wherever I studied everywhere in the class was one or at most two Nadi Evgeniy (Guest), please note that the article contains a spoiler with the title “90 more names”
There Marina is in 15th place, and Yulia is in 16th, and Gennady is in 22nd.
To see the table under the spoiler, click on “+” next to the inscription “90 more names.” Why is nothing said about Marin and Yul? And one more thing: the name Gennady (Gena) was not even listed as a name then or what? Anastasia and Taisiya are completely different names! Anastasia-Asya and Nastya. Taya and Tasya have nothing to do with them at any time of the day. It was nice to know that the name Rose was popular in 1924)))
It’s probably too early to sum up the most popular female name for 2017? My brother’s wife suffers all her life because her father wanted to register her as Natalia, and not Natalya. I can’t tell you how many documents I had to redo!
Our daughter Olga, born in 1997, was the only Olga in the school (3rd grade)))) And there was not a single Tatyana, Ekaterina, Irina in the class)) But two Valentinas. The name was just beginning to gain popularity again then.
My mother has a very rare name. I only heard this name once again in my life - from the mother of a classmate. For some reason, it disappeared from the calendar in the post-war years. And today’s priests do not know this name, but read it with the wrong emphasis and therefore consider it Muslim. Mom's name is Talida. Those who don’t know read it as TalidA. When they called mom, there were two names to choose from: Talida and TaOra. I’ve never met Taora in my life.
The article is wonderful, thank you! I still, when I fill out the documents and clarify that I am Natalia, they say, what difference does it make... 0 (stunned... Well, absolutely nothing... Crocodile, they just give some names rarely, but constantly. For example , every year this name is in 101st place in frequency. It will never enter the top 100.
Other names sharply gain and lose popularity, one year they are in 1st place, and the next, for example, in 150th.
If you add up the number of all newborns who received names over a hundred years, it may turn out that the number of children who received a name that was popular for a short time is less than the number of children who received a name that was not very popular all the time
It turned out to be confusing, but I hope the essence is clear. It seemed strange to me that in the TOP-100 table, the first and fourth columns do not correspond to each other. If there is a place in the TOP 100 (first column), then why then in the fourth there are the lines “Never included in the TOP 100”? So was it included or not? Interesting article! I'm Marina, there were 3 Marinas in the class, at the institute there were 5 Marinas in a group of 20 people! I named my daughter Veronica, I thought it wasn’t very popular, but in her group there were 3 Veronikas. And I like the name Efrosinya, I even thought about calling my daughter that, but I never did, somehow I don’t really like the shortened name Frosya.

Statistics of names in Russia: fashion for names, popularity of names
Should you choose a unique name for your child? Or maybe you need to give your baby a widespread, mass name so that he doesn’t stand out? - This issue must be decided by the parents themselves. But we considered it our task to provide parents with information about the frequency of modern male and female names.
You will find the popularity rating of newborn names (according to statistics from 2010-2017) here:girls names, boys names.
And this page provides data on Russian names that are most common among young people aged 17 to 20 years. Interesting? Then read on.
A good idea of what names modern young people have can be obtained, for example, from an analysis of data on applicants in 2015 - candidates for admission to the country's two main universities - Moscow (MSU) and St. Petersburg (SPbSU).
Lists of applicants for bachelor's and master's degrees were analyzed and processed, that is, the names of boys and girls born in 1995 - 1998 were considered; these lists were posted on official websitesdata from the admissions committees of both universities in the summer of 2015. Why was this particular age range (17 - 20 years) chosen for analysis? - Well, in particular, for such a simple reason that these young people themselves will become parents in the coming years.
Analysis of the combination of three elements: personal name, patronymic and last name made it possible to identify with high probability those applicants which are named in accordance with Russian tradition(these include not only Russian applicants, but also Belarusians, Ukrainians, Jews, in some cases Yakuts, Ossetians, Tatars), in contrast to persons with names not found in Russian families ( Armenian, Georgian, Kalmyk, Tuvan, Buryat names, names of Muslims of the Volga region, North Caucasus and Central Asia, etc.).
As a result, about 21 thousand female and 25 thousand male “Russian” names remained in the total sample (in the full list of applicants). This amount of data is quite sufficient to make certain statistical conclusions. The results are presented in tabular form:
100 most common female names
among applicants from Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University admitted in 2015
In total, in 2015, a total of approximately 21,000 applications were submitted to both universities from applicants wearing« Russians » names. In the table below, their names are arranged in alphabetical order. Along with the main forms of names, their variants are indicated:

Popularity rating of male names
The rating we bring to your attention is compiled on the basis of official statistical reports from civil registry offices of several regions of the Russian Federation with a predominant Russian population and the cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Minsk for 2010-2016 (data for 2017 are currently available only for certain regions, ).
All names are divided into five conditional groups: the most popular (1-30th place), popular (31-60th place), less popular (61-85th place), rare and very rare names. This classification is practically convenient and visual. Quantitative data are brought to a single denominator - per 10,000 newborns. To better “feel” the numbers, let us point out that approximately 65,000 girls are born in Moscow every year, and almost 12,000 of them are born in the entire Voronezh region per year.

Very rare names.
In the old days, they were quite common in Russia, but today they have practically fallen out of use, and in the registry office there are only isolated cases of their registration over several years (the frequency of such names is less than 1 per 10,000 newborn girls).
Here are just a few of them: Avdotya, Agrafena, Anatolia, Antonida, Apollinaria, Athanasius, Vassa, Virinea, Glyceria, Dorothea, Eudoxia, Eupraxia, Efimia, Zinovia, Iraida, Isidora, Lucia, Malania, Muse, Olympias, Salome, Sebastian, Thekla, Fedosya, Theodora, Theoktista, Feofaniya, Kharitina.
Choosing a name for a newborn baby sometimes becomes a difficult challenge for parents.
If many women can choose in advance a few of the most pleasant to hear or meaningful names, then already during pregnancy they often have to “replay” right on the go: either the name of the future baby does not fit well with the middle and last name, or the sex of the child on an ultrasound turned out to be completely wrong what the parents expected - in a word, the choice can be influenced by a variety of factors.
Not the least of them is fashion. In different eras, different names are heard. For example, in the late 80s, children vying with each other were called “ordinary” names - Olya, Katya or Natasha for a girl; Seryozha, Zhenya, Andryusha - for a boy. By the beginning of the 2000s, future parents went to great lengths, and kindergartens were filled with Sophia, Zabava, Bogdan and Borislav. There are even siblings in Perm Lucifer and Voldemar.
Most popular name for boys
The name Maxim has not gone out of fashion for many years. With the development of the Internet and the integration of Russia into the world community, parents who choose this name for their sons have another argument: the name Maxim is easily adaptable to most European languages. The same with the names Alexander, Denis or Ivan (the editors of znayvsyo.rf clarifies: Ivan in English will be John, but Evgeny will be Eugene, don’t confuse them!).
The situation is a little more complicated with the no less popular, but poorly translated names Yaroslav, Arseny, Kirill, Artem or Dmitry (Demetria is a name with the same root, but female. For example, actress Demi Moore bears this name). Let us note that in recent years, significantly more Dmitrievs have been born in Russia than before; perhaps this is due to the figure of the politician Dmitry Medvedev. Of course, young parents do not ignore the name Vladimir - often in honor Vladimir Putin.
The most beautiful and rare names for boys
But Russian parents do not try to give unusual names to their children - statistically, boys in Russia are called “strange” names relatively rarely. If earlier registry offices registered such citizens as Angel, Ogneslav, Summerset, and even Ocean, now there are only a few original names.
At the same time, the fashion for “old” names returned. So, quite often babies are called Bogdans, Matveys, Zakhars, Timofeys, Glebs, Anatolies. There are also rarer names - for example, Foma, Miron or Luka (in fairness, it is worth noting that Miron Fedorov, known as the rapper Oksimiron, received this name when it had not yet become fashionable).
But this is in the regions of Russia, but in the national republics the sons are called Timurs, Tagirs, Arthurs and Amirs. The situation in the republics of the North Caucasus is somewhat different. For example, in Vladikavkaz the most common name is Alan, in Makhachkala and Grozny it is Magomed, and in Kazan and Ufa it is Ruslan.
Most popular name for girls
The fashion for names for girls has changed somewhat. If three decades ago it was rare to meet a girl, Lisa or Sonya, now these are perhaps the most popular names, and the fashion has lasted for about a decade. However, other sonorous and beautiful names are not inferior to their position.Girls are still often called by the name Anastasia. This name comes from the Greek “anastos”, which means resurrected. In esoteric circles, it is believed that a girl with this name will be able to overcome all hardships and achieve any heights in life. At the same time, she will have a subtle mental organization. Anastasias are usually gullible. They can become excellent psychologists, artists, or kindergarten teachers.
“Strong” names for girls are Irina and Marina. Not so popular in recent years, they are still in some demand among parents who believe in the role of a name for the child’s destiny. These names are given to girls so that they grow up confident and filled with inner strength. The list of popular names for girls also includes Anna, Alexandra, Maria, Polina, Elena, Daria and Natalya.
The most beautiful and rare names for girls
Newborn girls, like boys, are often given names with a touch of antiquity. Among the names that sound archaic to our ears are, for example, Lyubava, Jaromira, Glafira, Taisiya and others. In addition, Milena and Milana, Eva and Vitalia, Varvara and Kira are popular.Fashion for names as a sign of the times
We at the editors of uznayvsyo.rf are materialists, and we are not sure that the name influences the character and destiny of a person. But we can say with confidence that life influences the choice of one name or another. An example is the first Soviet years in Russia, when names such as Oktyabrina, Revolution, Clara or Rosa (in honor of revolutionaries Clara Zetkin and Rosa Luxemburg).Today's trend is difficult to determine, but we can say with confidence that children's names have become a field for parents' self-expression. Many babies are called Kings, Charismas, Eros and even Lenins. And in 2008, seven hundred Messiahs were born in Russia.
At the same time, over the last decade, a trend has been emerging in the country - traditional names are returning to fashion. If a century ago the street was full of Aleksandrovs, Dmitrievs, Anastasii and Mariy, then the situation is similar now (though with a noticeable bias towards “Russianness”).
We suggest you draw your own conclusions, and at the same time read about what Russian names stars choose for your children.
