The World Ski Championships will take place from 17 to 27 February in Oberstdorf, Germany. The last championship - in 2003 in the Italian Val di Fiemme - the famous Russian skier Natalya Baranova-Masalkina missed due to disqualification. Now she is preparing for the start, moreover, she is one of the main hopes of our team. Shortly before the start of the championship, Novye Izvestia talked with the athlete.
– Natalya, in 2002 in your sports life A difficult event occurred - you were involved in a doping scandal, and just a few days before the Olympics in Salt Lake City you were excommunicated from ski racing for two years. What were you thinking then? Did you have any doubts that you would return to the big ski track?
– There was definitely no thought to finishing the speech. There was resentment. I really wanted to return to the national team and get back into action. And no doubt.
– What did you do during these years?
– During the first year of disqualification, I tried to spend as much time as possible at home, with my family. But she didn’t give up training either. Except I didn’t go anywhere. In 2003, when she entered into a lucrative individual contract, it appeared more money, and I expanded the geography of my training: I went to Ostrov, Raubichi, Bulgaria... But I still tried not to leave home for a long time.
– Ski race Have they changed during your absence?
- They have changed. And very significantly. For example, there are a lot of sprints.
- Is it good or bad?
- Fine. I view this as a manifestation of progress in our sport. Some people are better at running long distances, while others are better at sprinting. The latter now have the opportunity to express themselves. The running technique changes accordingly. Racing has become faster, and skiers have become more versatile.
– In one of your interviews you said that you were hungry for racing. Don’t emotions get in the way on the track?
– I saw this interview, but I don’t remember saying anything about hunger. Over the two years of absence from the national team, emotions have simply accumulated, which now, on the contrary, only help me. There is still a lot I want to prove...
- What? To whom?
- First of all, to myself, that I can still achieve success on my own high level.
– The World Championships in Oberstdorf and the Olympics in Turin are a good opportunity to realize one’s potential...
– Now all my thoughts are about the championship, but it will end, and, naturally, the first goal will be Turin. I want to fight there for medals.
- Modestly.
– There are many contenders for prizes, but there are much fewer medals.
– You prepared for Oberstdorf in the mountains of Armenia, in Tsaghkadzor. Assess your condition before the world championship.
– It’s difficult for me to judge him now. Time will show. The most important thing is to have health. In Tsakhkadzor, at first I didn’t feel very well, which affected my preparation. Therefore, frankly speaking, I am not entirely satisfied with it.
– What distances do you plan to run in Oberstdorf?
– Most likely, I will run 30 kilometers in the classics, and as for the other disciplines, everything will be decided according to the situation - depending on my readiness and well-being.
– You now have the best result in the overall World Cup standings among Russian women. Does this somehow affect your position in the team?
– It doesn’t have any effect. Now I’m performing better than others in the World Cup, then someone else will come along. I just had a few successful races, nothing more.
– Still, it turns out that you are dragging the others along with you...
– World champion Olga Zavyalova, Olympic champion Yulia Chepalova? I don't think so…
– But does the Russian team have a leader?
– There are probably no such leaders as Elena Vyalbe or Larisa Lazutina were in their time.
