The top 50 photos were selected from more than 2,300,000 images submitted by 91 photographers. These draw our attention to places we have never seen before and affect us emotionally, causing a variety of feelings - from delight to tenderness.

The race for the 2016 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year award is in full swing. Editorial National magazine Geographic has highlighted some of the standout photos, but there is still time for the leaders to change as voting runs until November 4, 2016.

How I sat on the shore of the wetlands, watching a pair of darter birds preparing their nest. One bird flew over the water and caught fish. And a predator watched this from the water.
