Gorky Literary Prize. The names of the laureates of the Gorky Literary Prize are named on Capri
The names of the winners were announced at the Gorky Prize ceremony, held in Sorrento on the evening of June 2. “Petrel” figurines were presented to the author of the novel “Laurel” Evgeniy Vodolazkin and the translator of Roberto Saviano’s book “Gomorrah” Yana Arkova. In the Writers category, in addition to the new Gorky Prize laureate, Viktor Pelevin (Chapaev and Emptiness) and Evgeny Popov (Arbeit. Wide Canvas) were presented. Stefano Gardzonio, who announced the decision of the international jury, emphasized that on the pages of his second novel “Laurel,” Evgeniy Vodolazkin was able to easily and gracefully combine his undeniable literary talent and deep linguistic, historical and cultural knowledge. The result of this successful synthesis was a novel in the style of “postmodern fantasy”, offering the reader a living narrative fabric and ethnocultural polyphony, created on the basis of a unique combination of modern and ancient language.
In the “Translators” category, along with the winning translation by Yana Arkova, the works of Evgeniy Solonovich (“Minutes of Everyday Happiness” by Francesco Piccolo) and Anna Yampolskaya (“The Human Body” by Paolo Giordano) were presented. “The book “Gomorrah” is an example of modern reflection on life and death, which have completely gone beyond the scope of any logical explanation,” noted jury president Viktor Erofeev in his speech. - “Created at the intersection of fiction and non-fiction, documentary in essence and fiction according to the canons of language, Roberto Saviano’s novel became a serious test for the translator. There is no doubt that this test was successfully overcome.”
The mayor of Sorrento, Giuseppe Cuomo, who spoke at the ceremony, thanked the festival organizers for their desire to continue the traditions of cooperation between Russia and Italy and expressed hope that the words of the song considered the anthem of this city - “Come back to Sorrento” - will turn out to be prophetic for all participants in the Gorky Prize. The evening ended with a performance by the Bolshoi Theater soloists.
The international literary competition "Gorky Prize" was established in 2008 by the public association "Gorky Prize" with the aim of encouraging and developing creative activity in the field of fiction and literary translation in Russia and Italy. The figure of the writer Maxim Gorky, known for his active cultural and educational activities, was chosen by the organizers of the award as a symbol of the development and strengthening of ties between the intellectual communities of the two countries. The main partners of the association are the Chernomyrdin Interregional Public Foundation (Russia) and the municipality of Sorrento. The award is held under the patronage of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Italy.
The Gorky Prize is awarded in two main categories - “Writers” and “Translators”. The list of works proposed for consideration by the jury consists of works in the genre of long prose (novel, story), published in translation (in Russian or Italian, respectively) within twenty years preceding the year of the competition. The main principle of the Gorky Prize is that its nominees alternate between Russian and Italian writers and translators. This alternation of seasons makes it possible to preserve the traditions of cultural exchange and at the same time highlight the most interesting achievements of modern literature from both countries.

ROME, Oct 5 – RIA Novosti, Sergey Startsev. The names of the new laureates of the Gorky Literary Prize, which has celebrated the successes of Russian and Italian writers and translators over the past seven years, were announced on Monday on the Italian island of Capri, where the great Russian writer lived for about six years.
Members of the international jury, headed by Italian linguist Giovanni Bogliolo and Russian writer Viktor Erofeev, recognized Franco Arminio as the winner of the competition in the Writers category. The Gorky Prize was awarded to his book “Postcards from the Other World,” which was published in Russian and translated by Gennady Kiselev. In another traditional category of the Translators award, the award winner was Paolo Nori, who carried out a new translation of Leo Tolstoy's story "Hadji Murad" into Italian.
This year the famous opera singer Mirella Freni was awarded the Special Gorky Prize “For Outstanding Contribution to the Development of World Culture”.
The ceremony of presenting the Gorky Prizes will traditionally take place in the evening in the ancient monastery of Certosa di San Giacomo. It was to Gorky that Capri owed the salvation of this unique historical monument. Having learned that local authorities were going to rebuild the monastery into a casino, the writer insisted on assigning the medieval monastery the status of an architectural monument of national significance.
“Over the past seven years, the Gorky Prize, which has turned into a kind of festival of Russian culture in the south of Italy, has already become a familiar event in the rich palette of cultural ties between our countries. However, this season will differ from previous ones not only in the composition of participants and new creative projects. For the first time we are trying to implement a festival as part of the award, the first part of which, according to tradition, will be held in Capri, and the second will take place in Sorrento, where the Italian public will see a lot of interesting things,” Svetlana Chernomyrdina, vice-president of the Chernomyrdin Regional Public Foundation, told RIA Novosti.
The program of the Sorrento part of the festival, in particular, will feature several projects developed by the Gorky Prize Association in collaboration with the Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry. We are talking about an exhibition of Soviet film posters of the 1920-1930s and a master class “Dedication to Sylvester Shchedrin”. The finale of this year's festival will be a concert by soloists of the Academy of Young Opera Singers of the Mariinsky Theater in Sorrento.
