Today, the Disney film fairy tale “Cinderella” is being released in Russian cinemas. Leading actress Lily James, star of Downton Abbey, gave an interview to our London correspondent Will King
L or, at 25 years old, is one of the supernova movie stars who was helped to become famous by the television screen. She has been playing Lady Rose McClair in Downton Abbey for four years now. The finale of the last season was the wedding of the heroine Lily with the charming Atticus. Now James has to play another wedding - with a handsome prince in "Cinderella."
James had to compete for the title role in a large-scale Disney production. She was given five rounds of auditions, two of which were screen tests in makeup and costumes. They even brought real mice as Lily's partners, which later turned out to be animated in the film.
“I was so passionate about the role that I talked to the mice as if they really were my best friends,” the actress laughs. “Then I waited a month for the final decision. Fortunately, I was filming Downton Abbey, but soon everyone there found out that I was waiting for the director’s answer. Maggie Smith kept asking me confidentially: “Well, how is Kenneth Branagh, haven’t you called back yet?”
Kenneth Branagh in in the end, apparently, he called you back?
Yes, Ken dialed me, but before he could say anything substantive, the connection was cut off, because I was filming, essentially, in a rural area. My heart stopped until he called back and said, “I want you to be my Cinderella.”
What did you say?
At first I screamed at the top of my voice with delight, which scared Michelle Dockery(Lady Mary in Downton Abbey - author's note)and Laura Carmichael(Lady Edith)with whom we shared a trailer. I told my friends that I had been given the role of Cinderella, and made them swear to secrecy. But where is it? That same evening we were filming a gala dinner scene, and Hugh Bonneville asked for attention during a take and, instead of his line from the script, said: “Now I want to raise a toast to the new Cinderella, Lily James!” Everyone applauded, and tears of happiness flowed out of my eyes... Damn, even now it seems like they’re coming again!
We manage to meet Lily in London, before she leaves for the Moscow premiere, to talk in a relaxed atmosphere. Over coffee in one of the central hotels, she certainly doesn’t look like the lady from Downton Abbey. Although she could easily pass for a modern aristocrat. Her origins, however, are all right: James grew up in the family of actor and musician James Thompson (with the start of her professional career, Lily Thompson will take her father’s name as a pseudonym-surname), in a prosperous area of Surrey, and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Everything about the future Cinderella's resume is perfect, and she is perfect for this role. Even their problems with shoes are the same.
In life, how do you feel about beautiful shoes?
Actually, I have a huge foot size, and I’m embarrassed by it. I prefer collecting bags.
What's already in the collection?
My first bag was a Chloé, which I initially bought and then took back to the store because I couldn't stand the thought of spending so much money on an accessory...
And how long did you last then?
Until I received the next fee, and my conscience no longer bothered me. (Laughs.) I went and bought myself a beautiful brown Mulberry bag, which is still one of my favorites.
The main difficulty on the set for Lily was her magnificent ball gown, made from twelve layers of blue silk - the hem was so wide that the actress could not even sit down to rest. Behind her they carried a huge ottoman, like a ball, on which she fell from time to time. " In addition, they hung and glued thousands of crystals on me, which I still find in my bathroom and wardrobe.”
Cinderella's lost slipper was made by craftsmen from the jewelry company Swarovski. True, even James herself did not have a chance to wear it. "Crystal shoes will not fit any human foot,” says the actress.
What did the prince put on your leg in the photo?
I had silver shoes with marked dots for special effects modeling. Although Richard Madden could hardly even put them on me. I urged him on: “Come on, prince, otherwise I’ll run away from you again!”
In reality, according to the British tabloids, the role of the prince in Lily's life is played by actor Matt Smith. The girl does not deny this, but she considers it a bad omen to discuss real relationships. We compromise. I propose to choose which of the on-screen suitors she would like more: Matt Barber, who played a descendant of Jewish emigrants from Odessa in Downton Abbey, or Richard Madden from Cinderella. "You can't put me in front of such a choice! - Lily laughs. “I was lucky with both guys.” Richard was good, but Matt Barber is like a prince in real life too. He's the type of guy who could turn my head."
“They hung and stuck thousands of crystals on me, which I still find in my bathroom and wardrobe”
Who inspired you in your latest roles?
I can give an example of a movie character, Amelie. She has a completely extraordinary ability to dream. Among Disney fairy tales, I have always liked the cartoon “Beauty and the Beast”. I'm so glad they decided to make it into a movie too! I always thought that with my natural hair color I would be the perfect Belle.
You can't play all the Disney princesses, leave something to Emma Watson!
Have to! But I turned out to be an intellectual Cinderella who seeks wisdom in books.
What are you reading now?
Because of filming, it's easier for me to read short stories, so I'm studying the work of Raymond Carver. This is an American short story writer, he wrote a lot in the 1980s.
In addition to American prose, James is now mastering Tolstoy's War and Peace, because she will soon be playing Natasha Rostova. "I can't wait to start filming! It will be a stunning BBC production filmed in Russia and Lithuania.”
What do you think of the original book?
You know, the parts with battles and fights are not very easy for me, but the personal experiences of the characters, Natasha’s family history - it really captivated me.
After so many weddings, would you now be interested in playing what happens next?
I would be interested in reading the script for Cinderella 2, where she would have to find a job and combine it with caring for three naughty children.
Cinderella's good godmother was played by the eccentric Helena Bonham Carter. As Lily admits, she remembers her primarily for her sense of humor: “She has the ability to make any difficult day of filming easier with jokes, which is probably necessary for survival in our profession.”
Was filming that difficult for you?
Yes, and at some point Helena gave me advice: “Allow yourself to have a nervous breakdown once a week for the sake of emotional relief, but not more often. Otherwise, people will really consider you not eccentric, but crazy.”
Another Hollywood superstar, Cate Blanchett, although she played the role of the evil stepmother, also provided Lily James with all her support. " After the ball scene, Kate burst into tears behind the camera with emotion! Then she handed me a handwritten letter,” Lily recalls. “You have no idea how much this means for a young actress like me!” I know that many are afraid of Kate, because she has accomplished so much in her career, earned two Oscars, but I dream of one day becoming her - at least in terms of professionalism and attentiveness to colleagues. I guess I could twist a famous movie business adage: You're only as good as your co-stars in your latest movie.

Before the recent success earned by the young actress Lily James by filming the film “Cinderella” with “Game of Thrones” star Richard Madden as Prince Charming, the girl was familiar to fans of the series “Downton Abbey” - she was hired in this project back in 2012 to play Lady Rose McClair Eldridge. “Cinderella” was Lily’s next major work after her appearance in “Abbey” and immediately brought her worldwide fame - for James this is a real breakthrough, considering that she began her acting career only five years ago.

Initially they wanted to make Emma Watson Cinderella, but it didn’t work out - the actress refused the role. Afterwards, among others, the stunning Margot Robbie, who captivated the world with her luxurious beauty after the release of The Wolf of Wall Street, tried to get her. But the right balance of talent and touching, heart-tugging charm turned out to be in Lily (by the way, without this it would be impossible to imagine her in the role of Natasha Rostova - James will play this Tolstoy heroine in the 6-part television film "War and Peace" on BBC One ). This is a fragile girl with delicate wheat-colored curls, with graceful facial features, in which at the same time one can feel her character - thanks to dark and thick eyebrows, with a sparkle in her eyes and with a kind, sincere smile. All this turned out to be very useful for creating the image of a princess.

It is especially pleasant to realize that for the external transformation into Cinderella, perhaps nothing was required from Lily - except that special hair styling and makeup were required for the ball; in ordinary life she is not much different from how her fairy-tale heroine should have looked. Appearing on the red carpet, the actress relies on charming, gentle, natural images - she styles her hair in soft waves, carefully “combs” her eyebrows, emphasizing their contour, lightly lines her brown eyes, and does not forget about a gentle blush and the same lip gloss. The girl does without bold accents and bright colors - we saw Lily James with red lipstick, it seems, only once or twice. And this is the right tactic - to be Lily’s “charm itself”.
Beauty secrets of actress Lily James

Body
- The reason for discussion and controversy after the appearance of the film “Cinderella” was Lily’s surprisingly thin waist in a fairy-tale princess dress for the ball. The filming was not complete without the help of a corset, but tightening it, even considering James’ diminutive size, was not the easiest task. In order for everything to go smoothly, James turned to the help of a “liquid” diet - the actress began to lean on soups, which allowed her to stay slim and feel light.
- In ordinary life, Lily is not a fan of diets and strict food restrictions. This was confirmed by her colleague on the set, Richard Madden. According to the actor, she “eats like a man.” For James, it is important to look healthy and feel comfortable in her body. According to the actress, she doesn’t like it when stars set an example for others with their overly thin figure - feminine forms, like Beyoncé’s, are much better.
- To prevent her appearance from being morbidly thin, Lily not only always eats according to her wishes, not missing the opportunity to eat a hearty meal, but also allows herself sweets - the actress claims, for example, that she is crazy about chocolate.
Face
- When it comes to facial skin care, Lily James is a real “A” student: unlike many other celebrities who also live in a crazy pace, she always carefully removes her makeup before going to bed, cleanses her skin and moisturizes it at night.
- Lily's favorite home skin care routine is using a face mask. This, according to the actress, is worth the dedicated time. The star herself regularly uses the White Diamond Ice-Glow Mask from NuBo, which James likes for its “revitalizing” effect on the skin.
- Although, as we have already said, Lily decides to wear bright lips only occasionally and most often emphasizes them with a barely noticeable, translucent gloss, actress Lily James is still a fan of lipsticks - most of all she likes the matte ones, those produced by the cosmetic brand M.A.C.
25-year-old Lily James is a new role model not only for a generation of little girls, but also for young girls. In the new Disney film, the actress tries on a lush ball gown made of azure-lavender silk and Swarovski crystal slippers created by costume designer Sandy Powell. And in real life, for the premiere of her new film - Erdem and Gucci dresses. - first serious workin a big movie. Before that, she played in London theaters and starred in TV series. Her most famous film role is Lady Rose in costume drama " Downton Abbey."

I wonder whatJames is a natural brunette, she went blonde for her role in Downton Abbey.

Lily James's style is as pretty and charming as her looks. According to her dresses can be made up realmodern Cinderella's wardrobe. D for social occasionsshe chooses calm silhouettes, flowing lines and floral prints.Unlike many young actresses, she has long ago decided on a style and feels comfortable in midi dresses and outfits from brands such as Erdem or Marchesa.

Cinderella performed by Lily James (LILY JAMES) in the new film adaptation of the fairy tale directed by Kenneth Branagh turned out to be as Charles Perrault himself intended her - a beauty with a tender heart, tenderness and kindness in the flesh. Looking at Lily, you readily believe that she is the very real Cinderella - the beloved prince who hopelessly falls under her spell and is ready to go around half the kingdom in search of his runaway princess and cling to the feet of all the noble ladies until he recognizes his one and only!

Figure
Promotional shots for the film " Cinderella“Raised many questions about the actress’s unrealistically thin waist. Critics discussed the absurd shoulder-to-waist ratio, which was seen as promoting a physically unhealthy ideal of beauty. This preoccupation with unrealistic body standards gave rise to all sorts of speculation about the actress's diet, the visual distortion of promotional photos, and the creation of the desired effect using the corset of Cinderella's dress.
In an interview with The LA Times, Lily James stated that her thin waist in the film is an illusion created by the corset and flowing skirt, and she does not think Cinderella promotes unhealthy attitudes towards weight:
"I am healthy. I have hips and breasts and buttocks and a waist. I don't like to see celebrities who look too thin, I prefer to look healthy and feel comfortable in my body."
Do you have gastronomic weaknesses?
Chocolate. I'm obsessed with chocolate. One day on set I ate a lot of Ferrero Rocher and it was the best day of my life!
