Leo Boqueria biography. Leo Antonovich Bockeria
Leo Antonovich Bockeria (b. 1939) is a Russian cardiac surgeon, famous scientist, professor, teacher, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, chief cardiac surgeon of the Russian Ministry of Health. The only one Russian doctor, included in the list of "100 best surgeons in the world." Since 1994 he has headed National Center Cardiovascular Surgery named after Bakulev. He is the head of the all-Russian public organization"League of National Health". Member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
Childhood
Leo ( full name Leonid) was born on December 22, 1939 in the Georgian city of Ochamchira (now Abkhazia).
His father, Anton Ivanovich Bokeria, born in 1900, was an engineer.
Mother, Olga Ivanovna Bockeria, born in 1905, worked as a teacher primary classes.
The family already had two daughters, and when the mother realized that she was pregnant again, she first tried to get rid of this situation by jumping high stairs and taking bitter onion tincture. The time was very difficult, and the woman did not want to give birth to a third child. But the Lord decreed that a person would be born who in the future would begin to save human lives every day.
A year and a half after Leo’s birth, the Great Patriotic War began. It so happened that during these terrible and hungry years, the mother was in no hurry to separate her son from breastfeeding and fed him until he was five years old.
From early childhood Leo remembered his father's death very well. The boy was three years old at the time, he didn’t understand anything and was playing around, and everyone around him said: “Be calm. Your dad died." The second is clear childhood memory- Victory Day. In Ochamchira that day it was very sunny, Leo put on short pants, and together with his mother they went to the central square where the radio was playing.
After the sudden death of her father, her mother had to maintain the house and yard alone, feed and raise three children. In addition to her main job at school, she constantly worked somewhere. Children's and teenage years Leo, by and large, passed on the street with boy friends, yard games, and a soccer ball. At the same time, his mother gave him such an upbringing that the boy never once had thoughts about hooliganism, smoking or tattoos.
Education
WITH youth Bokeria defined his life motto: “If you live and work in the city, then live and work only in the center.” Therefore, when he decided to continue his studies at a medical institute after school, there was no alternative to surgery. Leo considered himself a serious enough guy to choose less. Doing therapy or treating ears was clearly not his thing life path. Following his motto, Boqueria chose the very center of the human body in surgery - the heart.
In 1959, he became a student at the 1st Moscow Medical Institute named after Sechenov. In 1965, Boqueria received a diploma and continued his studies in graduate school.
The only place of work is the Bakulev center
In 1968, after graduating from graduate school, Bockeria began his career as a senior research fellow at the Bakulev Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. Soon he was already in charge of the hyperbaric oxygenation laboratory. Leo Antonovich combined his work with the defense of his candidate's thesis, and in 1973, his doctorate on the topic “Hyperbaric oxygenation in cardiac surgery” (it brought him a professorship).
In 1977, Leo Antonovich was appointed deputy director for scientific work. He worked at this place for sixteen years.
In 1993, the institute was reorganized into Science Center Cardiovascular Surgery (NCSS), in the fall of 1994, Bokeria became its director, where he works to this day.
It’s impossible to list all his achievements, but the most important thing is that Leo Antonovich saves people every day human lives:
- developed and introduced hyperbaric oxygenation, for which he received the Lenin Prize in 1976;
- developed and implemented electrophysiological methods for diagnosis and operations for ventricular overexcitation syndromes, supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias, developed a new direction - surgical arrhythmology, and in 1986 received the USSR State Prize for this invention;
- developed the main provisions of the problem surgical treatment aneurysms of the ascending section and aortic arch, in 2002 he was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation for this innovation;
- developed and implemented a transmyocardial method for treating inoperable patients, for which he received the Russian Government Prize in the field of science and technology in 2003;
- became the founder of reconstructive operations for congenital heart defects, and received the “Person of the Year” award for this development in 2013.
Leo Antonovich has many foreign and domestic medals, orders, titles and titles:
- several times he was recognized as “Man of the Year” (1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005), “Man of the Decade” (2000), “Man of Legend” (2002);
- awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland II, III, IV degrees, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of Russian Orthodox Church St. Sergius of Radonezh II degree;
- in 2003, as the best cardiac surgeon in the world, he received the international Golden Hippocrates award.
His typical day
A typical day in Boqueria starts at half past seven in the morning. He takes a contrast shower, has cottage cheese and yogurt for breakfast, and at half past eight he drives his car to the gates of the Bakulev center. He enters his office, completely littered with soft toys, but does not stay in it for long. Then he puts on a sterile suit and cap and enters the operating room. This is his little ring, where he always fights death on the side of life.
He performs an average of four to five operations a day. It rarely happens that there are fewer, just three operated patients - this is when you urgently need to attend a meeting at the Academy of Sciences or the Public Chamber. His personal record is seven operations in a day. All this is very difficult, both physically and mentally, when you have to leave the operating room into the corridor and look into the pleading eyes of your relatives. It’s hard to take a human heart in your hands, because this is full responsibility for his life.
The surgeon arrives home around nine o'clock in the evening, has dinner and rests after a working day. Leo Antonovich sleeps six hours a day, and says that a person doesn’t need more.
Lifestyle – only healthy
Despite the fact that Leo Antonovich will soon be eighty years old, he always looks fit and energetic, and a powerful charge of optimism emanates from him. To this day, he operates, is ready to train his fingers every day and save people around the clock.
A cardiac surgeon must have excellent vision, memory and endurance, because he has to withstand prolonged stress during long-term operations. Boqueria is sure that if a doctor does not smoke, does not drink alcoholic beverages or coffee in large quantities, then he can operate until he is very old.
He became friends with tobacco back in college, was a smoker with twenty years of experience, but in 1980 he gave up this bad habit forever.
For the last three years he has not been drinking alcohol at all, although before that he was the president of a tasting club. After all, Leo Antonovich is Georgian, so he always treated wines and cognacs with respect. The main thing is that a person should know when to stop and never get drunk. Among the wines he recommends to his friends, of course, are Georgian ones - dry white “Gurjaani” and “Tsinandali”. They are eliminated from the body faster than Italian and French wines, since they are weaker in degrees and contain less sugar.
Boqueria is the initiator of the “Walk with a Doctor” campaign, which starts weekly on Saturdays at 10 a.m. from the territory of the NCSS center. Anyone who wants to join a healthy lifestyle is welcome. The center's doctors give free consultations, measure vital signs, then everyone does exercises together and walks around Moscow.
Since 2003, Boqueria has devoted a lot of time to another of his brainchild - the League of National Health. This public organization was founded to promote a healthy lifestyle. She has completed such national projects as:
- "Alcohol-free Russia";
- “Russia without tobacco”;
- "Wave of Health";
- "Touch the heart of a child."
Personal life
Leo met his wife Olga Alexandrovna at the institute; they were classmates. Now she is the head of the department at the Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy.
In 1971, the couple had a daughter, Katya, and in 1973, Olya. Leo Antonovich considers them his idols; he is proud of his daughters, because both women are successful both in their profession and in their personal lives. Firstly, both Katya and Olya continued their parental work, treating and saving people. The younger Olya has now replaced her father in the “Walks with a Doctor” project; she is fully responsible for its organization. Secondly, both daughters created wonderful families, the Boqueria couple have seven grandchildren.
Leo Antonovich and his wife have been accustomed to spending their weekends culturally since their youth. Nowadays, more and more often, their children and grandchildren gather together, but they still find time to go to the cinema, theater, conservatory and art exhibitions. They don’t miss the premiere screenings of Nikita Mikhalkov’s films and Valery Gergiev’s concerts in Moscow.
The entire older generation in the Boqueria family - he, his wife, daughters and their husbands - are doctors. Until the age of thirteen, the eldest grandson wanted to become a heart surgeon, but then he changed his mind and decided to study as an economist. But Leo Antonovich jokes that there are six more grandchildren in stock, perhaps one of them will want to continue the family business.
Hobbies
Only on business trips does Leo feel less busy. In other cities, more often than in Moscow, he manages to visit museums and art galleries. The surgeon walks a lot, trying to walk for an hour and a half every day. Lately he has little interest in social dinners and receptions; Boqueria only goes to the obligatory evenings.
After his fortieth anniversary, he developed a tradition to which he is still faithful. Leo Antonovich always celebrates his birthday at the institute. In the morning he performs two or three operations, then he can hold a scientific council and make a report at it, at the end of the working day he is congratulated by the team, and only in the evening there is a festive dinner with family and friends.
In terms of cooking, Leo Antonovich is a naive amateur. He can only make tea for himself; in extreme cases, he can finish scrambled eggs. As a child, he was spoiled by his mother, then his wife. When leaving on a business trip for three days, his wife prepares him a lot of food and leaves notes about what to eat on Thursday and what on Friday.
He is fond of football, since childhood he has been kicking the ball with boys along the streets of Ochamchira and Poti, and was a striker. When I came to work at the Bakulev Center, it had its own football team, and Boqueria immediately became her player. Often they even had to go to competitions. Now, of course, I’m not at the right age to play football. But sports are always present in his life - Leo Antonovich goes swimming in the pool 2-3 times a week. And he continues to watch football on the TV screen. During the Soviet Union, he was a passionate fan of the Dynamo Tbilisi team.
Leo Boqueria is a big fan of painting. His favorite artist in his youth was Arkhip Kuindzhi, and later became interested in the work of Isaac Levitan. He considers the works of Leonardo da Vinci to be the pinnacle of this art; in the surgeon’s house there are many albums of the artist; he brings them from his trips abroad.
The Boqueria family has a good library; there is no time to just read. Lately, Leo Antonovich has been studying the works of his friends - writers Svyatoslav Rybas and Alexander Potemkin, whom the surgeon considers a modern Dostoevsky. Since childhood, his favorite writer is Maxim Gorky, especially his poem “Petrel” and the story “The Birth of Man.”
Favorite composer – Edvard Grieg, favorite film – “The Fate of Man” by Sergei Bondarchuk.
Leo misses his homeland very much; he used to go there often. But after he transported the ashes of his parents to Moscow, he rarely visits Abkhazia, only distant relatives.
Leo Boqueria's most important goal in life is serving the sick. If a doctor does not think so, then he is not a doctor. When a patient agrees to undergo heart surgery, the surgeon becomes more than a father and mother for him, first after God. The physician who does not understand this will never become a real surgeon. A doctor should not have the concept of disgust and in no case should he expect medals and thanks for his work. His main reward is the recovery of the patient!
Cardiology Interview with an expert
Leo Boqueria: “You have to live life in such a way as to see more...”
2013-03-11In his eyes there is a whole life, a whole philosophy of life. When he speaks, everything around him seems to freeze. Bright, weighty, vital - these words, perhaps, can characterize our meeting.

Since 2005 - member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
Since 2006 - Chairman of the Commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation on the formation of a healthy lifestyle.
— Leo Antonovich, I won’t be original, but I really want to ask this question. Why did you choose cardiac surgery?
— I was born in one relatively small city, grew up in another relatively small city. We always lived in the center. And somehow from childhood we got used to the fact that if you do something, it should be the center of attention. In addition, for a Georgian boy, nothing was perceived in medicine except surgery. Although now I understand people who have become therapists and cardiologists. In this regard, it is important to be a good specialist... By by and large I was “dragged” into medicine by my elder sister, who studied at medical school. And then, when I started studying there, I realized that I had to. Apparently, she also instilled this in me... When I came to cardiovascular surgery, it was the dawn of this field, and the most big hopes were associated with her. Then, when I was finishing my graduate studies at the First Moscow Medical Institute. I.M. Sechenov, my opponent on the candidate's dissertation was Vladimir Ivanovich Burakovsky, director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after. A. N. Bakuleva (there was no center then). He invited me to work, immediately to the position of head of the laboratory. This academic institute and in principle it is not supposed for candidates of science to be heads, but he wanted to develop the direction in which I have my dissertation. Vladimir Ivanovich took me as leader, and he and I received the Lenin Prize for this work. This was my student work, then my master's and doctoral dissertations. That's how I ended up in cardiovascular surgery. I think the key moment was that I came to the Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery.
— Did communication with interested people give you any impetus?
- Yes! As a rule, in cardiovascular surgery they work very bright people who experience a lot in life, experience a lot, have a tempered character, and do not lose heart. Life beats them from all sides, but they continue to work.
“It’s really not easy to see an open heart and still operate on it...
“I’ll give you a few examples of what resilience of character is. In 1953, John Gibbon performed the world's first operation using a heart-lung machine with artificial circulation. All of his subsequent 5 patients died. And he left. A total of 17 operations were performed in America, of which only the first girl survived. When Walton Lillehai, one of the founders of cardiovascular surgery, walked into the operating room for another operation, the nurses behind him said “murderer.” And he heard it. But the most interesting thing is, despite the fact that people knew that the mortality rate was prohibitive, the queue increased thousands of times. Because everyone hoped that he would survive. It's like a lottery. And just imagine what kind of sense of responsibility a surgeon must have in order to, despite experiencing terrible failures and torment, come back again and be hope for these people.
— Mortality from cardiovascular diseases is increasing. I have read about this many times. And the WHO provides disappointing figures that over the next decade the number of deaths in the world from cancer, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases will increase by 17%. How can you comment on these numbers?
— In principle, humanity lives better. But this does not mean that it pays more attention to itself, unfortunately. After all, such common diseases as atherosclerosis require self-control. And it turns out that an increase in well-being does not lead to an improvement in consciousness, but on the contrary, a person naturally rushes to what was previously inaccessible to him. The other side of the issue is that today all the treatment methods that exist in our field are preventive in nature, medications, stenting, surgery... In short, these numbers are associated with improving people’s well-being and extending life expectancy.
— You are one of the founders of the surgical treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, a fairly new direction. Tell me, how treatable is arrhythmia?
— Back in 1986, we received the USSR State Prize for the treatment of tachyarrhythmias. Indeed, when we started doing this work in 1979, there was simply an “untilled field.” We were taking our first steps. And it was an explosion against the backdrop of the absence of any radical treatment at all. Today, the vast majority are perfectly treated minimally invasively. The main problem in this section of clinical medicine is a disease that was previously called atrial fibrillation, or atrial fibrillation. One of its forms is idiopathic, and can also occur in early age, and in his youth. But mostly it is still an age-related disease. This is the first one. And the second is that it is very often accompanied by heart disease. For example, in France the level of medical care is very high, but doctors believe that if those units that exist for treatment atrial fibrillation, will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and will only be able to reach 3% of those in need. You can imagine the volumes. On the one hand, this serious disease. On the other hand, I am glad that there is very effective methods treatment. Today we use non-invasive diagnostic tools in 3D mode, which show us very precisely where it is. To treat atrial fibrillation, medications, catheter methods, and surgery are used. We are actively working in this direction.
— Have you ever counted how many operations you managed to perform?
- No... More than one. (Laughs.)
— Do you often operate yourself now?
- Every day. On average I do 4 surgeries a day. If I have any meetings, then I perform 3 operations. It happens that 5. The largest amount I made in a day was 7. This happened twice.
— How can people get to your center?
— Patients come to us who are referred by the relevant authorities, as in any federal agency. any region has quotas at the Bakulev Center, and the patient must undergo all examinations according to the list at the place of residence. Here, a quota of 203,500 rubles is allocated for it. And it is clear that this money is very little, because only disposable accessories that are used during the operation cost more than 100,000 rubles. We fulfill a little more than 10,500 quotas a year. In reality, incoming patients tend to be under-evaluated. We are forced to further examine them, so we lose in wages and in many other things. But this is life, you can't escape it. In addition, we, for our part, carry out many charity events. The initiator is the Bakulev Center. We travel a lot around the regions. We have a public reception. Stock surveys are free for everyone.
— What should you do to avoid becoming a patient of a heart surgeon?
— Now announced Government program prevention. This is, of course, a medical problem, but it is primarily a social one. So let's say, a two-sided theme - the theme of the person and the theme of the doctor. I am often asked the question, “How many people can you reach?”, and we answer, “We can reach a lot, but people don’t want to.” Objectively, many people don’t want to take care of themselves! It's hard to even explain. Because people are not taught to live, they are not told that you should live, relatively speaking, 80 years. Therefore, it is important that there is dialogue between generations. And there are simple things that must be observed in order to avoid going to the doctor. Bad habits must be eliminated. The regime must be followed. But this does not mean at all that you need to torture yourself. This means that a person should go to bed and get up at the same time, even if he... Because the body needs natural stability. Of course, when a person is born and while he is at a playful age, relatively speaking, up to 15 years old, he needs movement all the time. Then he begins to sit for a long time, read, study, and these skills and desire disappear. Here physical activity is of very great importance. We know international recommendations. very useful, especially for people over 40 years of age. It significantly lengthens a person's life. Swimming and gymnastics, any kind in the morning or evening, are highly recommended. Collective games are very useful for a growing person: they generally instill in him a lack of envy and make him understanding. So there are no special secrets. You just need to remember that this life is given to a person once. And it is advisable to live it in such a way as to see more and enjoy it more.
— Tell me, is heart transplantation performed in Russia?
- Certainly. It is being done, but very little. I think that about 110-115 transplants are performed per year.
— Successful?
- Certainly. The technique has been worked out, the schemes are all known. Still, a lot of time has passed since 1967. So yes, it's a success. There is another issue here that has not yet been resolved. We prohibit the collection of organs in childhood, so we don't have a child's heart and lungs.
— I have heard that with hypertension a person must constantly take the drug so that the pressure does not increase. Is this really true?
—Hypertension is very common all over the world. The most effective means The treatment is physical activity. On initial stage When a person begins to feel unwell, if he actively engages in physical activity, he may well overcome it. Because this is a vascular reaction. And physical exercise makes it possible to make blood vessels more manageable, more pliable, and more adaptable. From a treatment point of view, virtually every patient is his own doctor. In the sense that you need to measure blood pressure and adjust the dose of medications. Let's say you start taking the drug and realize that you need to exercise physical exercise. You start doing them, and your medication dosages will begin to decrease and, perhaps, it will be possible to give them up altogether over time. There are, of course, very advanced cases. Then the person takes the medicine for life.
—Leo Antonovich, you head the public organization “National Health League”. Where does this name come from?
— I have nothing to do with this name, unfortunately. In 2002 this idea arose. There was a lot of talk about the health of the nation, both in newspapers and on the radio. By this time I myself felt that I had something to say. I was among the authors who signed the letter to the nation. These were doctors, athletes, scientists and cultural figures. Then I was invited to a convention new organization"League of National Health". The day before they said that I was being considered for president. I was hesitant because I had a very busy schedule. But upon reflection, I realized that I should not refuse: our specialty, like no other, can recommend a person to lead. Cardiac surgery is the most realistic secondary prevention. In oncology, say, a patient often arrives in a state where little can be done. There is always something we can do in our specialty. Therefore, I accepted this offer with gratitude, especially since the board included very bright people. We were the first to formulate the concept of “formation of a healthy lifestyle”. I think that for this reason, in 2005, I was nominated to the first composition of the Public Chamber. The commission was called that way - the Commission for the Promotion of a Healthy Lifestyle, then they added sports and tourism.
— The National Health League’s “Tobacco-Free Russia” project has collected more than a million signatures in support of the anti-smoking law. Is this your civic position?
- This is the civil position of a person who smoked. I smoked for almost 20 years. I came to the institute as a non-smoker, as is the case with many young people, and started smoking at the institute. And in 1980, I quit one day. Now many years have passed. And I can really see how useful it was. This is from my experience. And from the experience of a doctor, I can say that it’s scary to look at a smoker’s lungs. I “open” several chests every day, excuse the expression. (Smiles.) And every day I see several lungs. And it’s one thing for a non-smoker, another for a smoker. So they say the diagnosis is this, this and that and they ask “does he smoke?” "Smoking." And immediately a risk factor arises. Therefore, this is my absolutely civil position. I, together with the Minister of Defense, initiated the ban on cigarettes in the soldier's kit. The ministry responded very quickly and made a decision. It cost me propaganda on the Internet that I, supposedly, an American spy, want to control Russian army. The tobacco lobby is creepy. And today, looking at a person, you don’t know which side he’s on. He can say he is against tobacco and at the same time not vote for the bill.
— How did you manage to quit smoking?
— I had a desire to quit smoking. (Thinking.) An episode happened to me that was etched in my memory, and then a few months later I quit smoking. I was deputy director for science at that time. A friend called me and asked me to see a close friend. And my office was opposite the director’s. And when the professors went to a conference, they came in to smoke with me. In the 20-meter room there was not much ventilation, and there was a constant smell. This man came, I looked at him, said that additional research was needed, he got dressed and, leaving, said: “Doctor, you know, I am a smoker and, on my way to you, I brushed my teeth downstairs in the toilet so that tobacco would not come from me.” it smelled. And it’s unclear what’s in your office.” I was shocked, you know?! Firstly, to this day I am eternally grateful to him for what he told me openly. And secondly, I realized that this is very indecent for a doctor who treats the heart... And I had another case that helped me get rid of this habit. We went south with our family on vacation. We were invited to the eminent table. I was sitting on the edge of the table, and there was hot smoked fish, which I missed. I'm full and... I didn't want to eat or drink. And then I realized that if I quit smoking, it would only be today. Of course it was very difficult. To me long years It seemed in a dream that I was smoking. I woke up in a cold sweat, why did I suddenly smoke? (Smiles.) But I know many people who quit smoking completely calmly, they told themselves that’s all.
— This year the Interstate Forum “Public health is the basis for the prosperity of the Commonwealth countries” was held. Tell us about it.
— My passport says “Born in the USSR.” And, of course, for any sane person it is clear that Soviet Union was a country one could only dream of. I'm not talking about specific people, destinies turned out differently. But by and large, we are still the same empire that took 400 years to create different people. Sometimes I have to visit the countries of the so-called post-Soviet space: somewhere I operate, somewhere I come as a guest. We meet like family, even warmer than we met then. Therefore, when the international year for the countries of the commonwealth was announced, the presidium of the League of National Health arose the idea to try their hand at this space. And we tried. Many of our colleagues from other countries didn’t even believe it. But then, when they looked at the program, at the composition of the participants, many of them came and made their own exhibitions. It is already known that the second Interstate the forum will take place this year from May 29 to 31 in Moscow at Gostiny Dvor. Some suggested holding it in another country. But we are not ready, that is, not us, but the community that must unite, so to speak. It seems to me that it is worth holding the event in Moscow several times to form a stable asset, then it will be possible to hold it somewhere else.
—The “Health Marathon” campaign attracts more than 50 thousand people to the All-Russian Exhibition Center. How does this work?
- It is very important here that we are honest. At the All-Russian Exhibition Center, attendance on some days reaches 180 thousand people. That's why we chose this place for the event. People see our activity, drums and everything else, and join. A large number of people, of course, come regularly. They bring their relatives, brothers, sisters and so on. The All-Russian Exhibition Center is truly a place of mass visitation.
— Your daughter Olga was the initiator of “Walk with a Doctor.” Is she continuing your dynasty?
— I have two daughters, both doctors of science. Olga continues brilliantly. She defended herself early, even earlier than me. I was one of the youngest doctors in the Soviet Union, I defended my defense at 33 years old, and she defended her defense at 29 years old. Probably all parents love to praise their children, myself included. These are my idols. (Smiles.) Olechka has a lot good ideas. And if she takes on something, she embodies everything... this is a topic that many cardiologists around the world are studying. In particular, there is the Mayo Brothers Clinic in America, this is a world famous center. They created a Health Institute at the clinic. We also created a Health Institute as part of the League, but it is not as effective yet as, say, theirs. They proved that walking is the best form of human health. And in the USA there is such a movement as Walk with a Doc. Olechka contacted them and asked how they were organizing the action. They told her she needed sportswear, a baseball cap and a pedometer. She came to me, we discussed it, and she had already agreed with someone on some issues. (Smiles.) I enjoyed going to the “Walk with the Doctor”; all my grandchildren came and walked there. This was followed by a whole series of invitations to different cities.
— Do you think our country will ever be healthy (when people lead a healthy lifestyle, don’t smoke, etc.)?
- You know, a person is half ideal and half not. And the highest nervous activity, which was best described by our scientific predecessors, through suggestion, self-hypnosis, introspection, through effort, sometimes even violence against oneself, allows a person to maintain longevity with good quality life. Humanity will never reach such a level that everyone is ideal, that everyone strives for the same thing. Another thing is that this can happen in individual regions, teams, families. In this regard, I am not an idealist or a dreamer. I understand perfectly well that today we must talk about improving the nation’s health. And it includes many aspects, in addition to the prevention we are talking about, it also includes the availability of medical care. It is very important. If today we could provide assistance to all cardiovascular patients who only need surgery, our life expectancy would increase by 12-15 years. Even here we have a huge reserve by increasing funding and improving the quality of medical care. And a person who has undergone treatment, who has understood the benefits of this, will not smoke or overeat later, he will move. I am simply convinced of this. Here's an example. Doctor spoke at one of our forums medical sciences, which conducted a health analysis in the city of Moscow by district. And it turned out that the largest number is in the Central District. It would seem that there is gas pollution and everything else. And when she compared the indicators, they were all the same, except for one. The Central District has the largest percentage of educated people. He is told to “wash your hands before eating”, “brush your teeth”, and he does it. It becomes a habit for him. It is very important here that we somehow bring the need for a healthy lifestyle to people’s consciousness, namely consciousness, and then we will have a turning point in this direction.

Spouse - Boqueria Olga Aleksandrovna (born 1940), head of the department of the clinic of propaedeutics of internal diseases in Moscow Medical Academy named after I.M. Sechenov. Daughter - Boqueria Ekaterina Leonidovna (born 1971), candidate of medical sciences, cardiologist-neonatologist at the 67th city hospital in Moscow. Second daughter - Boqueria Olga Leonidovna (born 1973), Doctor of Medical Sciences, senior researcher at the Research Institute of Agricultural Sciences. Grandson - Anton Petrovich Gukovsky (born 1995), schoolboy.
In 1965, L.A. Boqueria Graduated from the 1st Moscow Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov and entered graduate school at the Department of Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery under Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences V.V. Kovanov. In 1968, having completed his graduate studies, Leo Antonovich was assigned as a senior researcher to the Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after A. N. Bakulev, with whom he forever connected his life. From 1974 to 1977 he headed the hyperbaric oxygenation laboratory. From 1977 to 1993 he worked as Deputy Director for Science, Head of the Department of Surgical Treatment of Heart Rhythm Disorders. From 1993 to 1994 Acting director of the Institute of Cardiac Surgery of the Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery named after A. N. Bakulev of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1994, after the death of his teacher and friend V.I. Burakovsky, he was elected director of the V.I. Burakovsky Institute of Cardiac Surgery of the A.N. Bakulev Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the A.N. Bakulev Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
L. A. Bockeria has pioneered, new for our country, work on the theoretical substantiation and clinical use of the hyperbaric oxygenation method in cardiac surgery in patients with high operational risk. He personally performed more than 200 heart surgeries under barooperative conditions, a number of which were completely new in surgical practice.
In 1980 Leo Antonovich created the country's first specialized department for the surgical treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and introduced into clinical practice electrophysiological methods for diagnosing arrhythmias, which opened a new direction in world cardiology and cardiac surgery. He was the first to introduce methods of epicardial electrical pulse destruction of accessory pathways, cryodestruction and laser photocoagulation of arrhythmogenic zones, and was the first in the country to perform the operation of implanting an automatic cardioverter-defibrillator.
L.A.’s personal surgical experience is unique. Boqueria, obtained during several thousand open-heart surgeries. Academician Boqueria belongs to a small number of outstanding cardiac surgeons in the world who perform the entire known arsenal of heart operations using artificial circulation for a wide variety of pathologies.
Leo Antonovich Boqueria is the initiator of the development of another new section of cardiac surgery in our country - minimally invasive heart surgery. He completed the first successful operations using the latest techniques in patients with congenital and acquired heart defects and patients with life-threatening arrhythmias and coronary heart disease (CHD), including the use of three-dimensional images of the surgical field, which increases the safety and reliability of operations. Great contribution from L.A. Boqueria contributed to the problem of surgical treatment of ischemic heart disease. He introduced into clinical practice new methods of physiological reconstruction of the left ventricle (LV) in patients with LV aneurysms. His great merit is the introduction into clinical practice of transmyocardial revascularization operations using the very powerful CO2 laser he created together with domestic physicists in the most severe patients with coronary artery disease with damage to the distal coronary arteries. A new step in the surgical treatment of this category of patients was the combination of intraoperative use of transmyocardial laser revascularization and coronary artery bypass grafting.
With the name L.A. Boqueria associated with the opening of a new chapter in domestic cardiac surgery - the formation of approaches to the surgical treatment of terminal heart failure. He was the first to develop the concept of dynamic cardioplasty, including for the first time in the world in children. Special thanks to Leo Antonovich is to perform the first implantations of artificial heart ventricles in our country, in particular the Novokor system, which opens up new opportunities for previously doomed patients. He developed and successfully performed new operations on severe cardiac surgical patients with various forms of cardiomyopathies.
The accumulation of such clinical experience has led to the active development of related issues of cardiology, resuscitation, anesthesiology, and artificial circulation. Thus, at the Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery named after A. N. Bakulev of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, on the initiative of L. A. Boqueria A number of new clinical units with the highest diagnostic and treatment potential were created. Departments for the surgical treatment of cardiomyopathies, non-invasive arrhythmology, surgical treatment of tachyarrhythmias, terminal heart failure, electrophysiology laboratories, hemodialysis and a number of others were created.
L.A. Boqueria is one of the co-authors and developer of the “Moscow-Regions-Moscow” teleconferences, the purpose of which is to provide full consultation to patients and doctors from remote regions of Russia by the Center’s leading specialists.
In addition to intensive operational activities and extensive administrative work at the post General Director Leo Center Antonovich finds time and energy to actively engage in the methodology of medical science and pedagogical activity. He is the founder of the country's largest cardiac surgery school, a talented teacher who has trained more than one generation of cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, resuscitators and other related specialties. L.A. Boqueria is the head of the department of cardiovascular surgery at the Moscow Medical Academy named after I.M. Sechenov and the Russian Academy of Postgraduate Education. Under his leadership, 76 candidate and doctoral dissertations have been defended and 37 dissertations are being prepared for defense. Many of his students are doctors of medical sciences, professors, and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Eight of his students were awarded the Lenin Komsomol Prize, and one was awarded the State Prize.
L.A. Boqueria as the Chief Cardiac Surgeon of the Russian Ministry of Health, he actively contributes to the development of this area in the country. He is the initiator of the creation of a number of scientific and practical cardiac surgery centers in Russia.
In the scientific and medical world Leo Antonovich enjoys the highest authority and well-deserved respect as a serious scientist and an excellent surgeon who gave life to thousands of patients.
L.A. Boqueria published over 1000 printed works, more than 100 of them abroad. He is the author of a number of problematic monographs and the only manual on cardiovascular surgery in the country. The most important monographs: “Hyperbaric oxygenation in cardiovascular surgery” (1974, 1981), “Cardiovascular surgery” (1989, 1996), “Tachyarrhythmias” (1989), “History of cardiovascular surgery” (1997, 1998) , "Minimally invasive heart surgery" (1998), "History of the A. Leo Antonovich Bockeria has more than 180 patents for inventions, utility models and innovation proposals.
Leo Bockeria is a famous Russian cardiac surgeon and academician. During his medical practice, he performed many heart surgeries, thereby prolonging the lives of patients. His views on hypertension and treatment methods are worthy of attention.
Hypertension is a widespread disease. In the initial stage it is difficult to recognize, which aggravates the disease. According to statistics, almost 30% of the adult population suffer from hypertension. Among older people - 60%.
Leo Bokeria notes the danger of hiding the disease under ordinary ailments ( headache, tinnitus, numbness of extremities). About 67% of people with hypertension do not recognize the disease.
This is usually attributed to overwork, magnetic storms, bad sleep. Most patients turn to the doctor at a health-threatening stage, complicating treatment.
According to the country's leading cardiac surgeon Leo Bockeria, in many cases, people become aware of the disease while on the operating table.
Hypertension progresses slowly, but a heart attack occurs unexpectedly. To prevent hypertension, it is important to take care of blood vessels.
- Schedule your daily routine, clearly indicating hours of rest and work.
- Communicate more.
- Enjoy your work.
- The place of residence should be comfortable.
- Thinking positively has a positive effect on the health of the body.
Leo Boqueria on cholesterol
The main cause of death in Russia is cardiovascular diseases. Vascular atherosclerosis and elevated cholesterol levels gradually cause bad feeling. In many cases, this leads to disability, heart attack, stroke, and death. Leo Bockeria notes that with a normal cholesterol ratio, a person has energy and is in a good mood.
Cholesterol can be good or bad. A healthy human body contains 80% free cholesterol (produced by the body) and 20% bound cholesterol (comes from food).
When this proportion is disturbed, cardiovascular diseases and hypertension develop, and plaques form in the vessels, inhibiting blood flow. We must not forget about genetic predisposition.
The doctor explains that if the organ does not receive required amount blood, it ceases to perform its function. As a result, there is an imbalance in the functioning of the entire body.
Atherosclerosis affects the blood vessels of the heart and brain. According to Leo Bockeria, this can begin in childhood, and as a person grows older, it can progress.
Cholesterol produces vitamin D, steroid and sex hormones, and protects against cancer.
With this problem, you should definitely consult with your doctor or nutritionist. They will write down the nutrition rules. According to Leo Bockeria, this is only half the battle. Mobility is important. Adhering to one diet, it is not easy to stop the development of atherosclerosis and arterial hypertension.
L. Bokeria focuses on physical activity, like best method blood pressure prevention.
Risk group
People with bad habits are the first to be at risk. Alcohol and smoking are not all indicators. There are other risk factors:
- food culture;
- passivity of life;
- mental and nervous reboots.
All of the above items negatively affect the condition of the heart and blood vessels. It is important to pay attention to age. The older a person gets, the less active he is. As a result, blood circulation deteriorates, blood vessels age, which leads to hypertension.
Hypertensive types of diseases are difficult to cure. One method to combat hypertension is health care, the second is the patient’s healthy lifestyle. It is important to take care of your health from a young age.
Smoking
It is impossible to completely improve a long-term smoker's health. But people need to understand that the sooner you stop smoking, the longer your life will be. Leo Bokeria says that a person is not the only one who quits smoking, but by his example he will stop 5-6 more smokers.
A heart attack occurs from vascular atherosclerosis. Blood saturates all organs and the brain with oxygen.
Atherosclerosis prevents blood circulation through the vessels. The plaque formed in the vessels covers about 70% of the lumen. If nervous or physical stress occurs, there is a lack of oxygen during breathing. Many organs stop functioning normally. A heart attack develops.
While smoking, the human body feels a lack of oxygen, because... nicotine is inhaled. Blood circulation is impaired, leading to hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.
At first this is not noticed. But subsequently, hypertension develops, atherosclerosis progresses, and the functioning of all organs is disrupted. They say that you need to stop smoking gradually. Leo Boqueria claims that this is absolute nonsense. You can quit smoking at any time. After a few days, a heavy smoker will feel better.
Leo Boqueria smoked for 20 years. The difference physical condition after smoking he felt it on himself.
Nutrition
In the treatment of hypertension, proper nutrition is the most important component. The initial stage of the disease can be treated without the use of medications. It is enough to make adjustments to your lifestyle. If you have obesity, be sure to fight it.
Leo Boqueria prefers the diet of American astronauts. Its principles are as follows:
- Eliminate sweets.
- Limit your diet of bread and salt.
- The main food is boiled meat and fish, which helps remove fat, food is easily digested.
- Give preference to fresh vegetables rather than side dishes.
- Consume protein that will saturate the body and reduce the need for sweets.
- Eat often, but little by little.
- Exclude sausages, offal, lard, and high-fat dairy products.
- Drink plenty of water, sugar-free fruit juices, herbal teas.
- Use foods with high content calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, C, E, group B, P. These substances are found in nuts, seafood, soy, dried fruits, bananas, apricots, buckwheat, oatmeal, carrots, parsley, eggplant, cabbage.
Physical exercise
Physical activity is essential for human health. The mobility of young people should be high. For those who are not familiar with sports, the usual general physical training exercises will do at first, but only after consulting a doctor. Heavy loads are unacceptable, otherwise the body will become overworked and the heart rhythm will fail.
The best prevention method for hypertensive patients is walking. The blood vessels will be normal if you walk for at least 30 minutes. in a day.
Recommendations for the use of medications from Dr. Bockeria
For a long time, patients were recommended medications that did not help, but reduced blood pressure for a short period. Dependence occurs, which leads to discomfort, material costs, and shortened life. Science does not stand still. Scientists have developed medications that affect the cause of hypertension. What does Leo Boqueria recommend?
Lion heart
This drug, in the form of drops, consistently demonstrates its effectiveness. It normalizes blood pressure, improves the condition of blood vessels, the heart, and reduces cholesterol. The interesting thing is that one course is enough for complete recovery of cardio-vascular system. In difficult situations, it is recommended to take 2-3 courses. Lion heart is also used for prevention purposes. As Leo Bockeria emphasizes: “Prevention is an integral part of treatment.” For prevention and after treatment, it is advisable to take the medicine at least once a year.
The drug has been studied and its effectiveness is known.
In 2015, Lion heart was tested on 300 volunteers. For a year, they took drops. The following results were obtained:
- 70% of people felt the absence of attacks of hypertension on the third day of taking the drops.
- 29% - after 30 days of use.
- 1% - after 6 months of use.
An effective drug.
HERZ drops do not cause irritation or pressure surges. The pressure decreases gradually, angina pectoris, arrhythmia, and neuroses go away. HERZ drops improve memory, restore speech and mobility after a stroke.
The drug is herbal, clinically tested, without side effects.
Hyperium
Do you know this drug? Giperuum appeared in Russia not so long ago.
This revolutionary remedy strengthens the heart vascular system, lowers cholesterol levels. Giperium is able to restore blood vessels within 1-2 months. It was developed by Russian professor Viktor Sukhanov.
Doctor Bockeria claims that there are no analogues in the world this tool No. Hyperium does not have side effects and will help prolong the lives of many patients. Its action is aimed at the cause of the disease. Within six hours the symptoms go away. You can restore vascular tone in one course of administration. The drug helps the body cope with all stages of hypertension.
L. Bokeria says that Giperium is 12 times more effective than similar products. It was examined according to all medical standards, which confirmed its effectiveness.
Leo Bockeria took part in the “Actually” program, where participants are connected to a lie detector. He admitted that Viktor Sukhanov was fired from his job. Effective remedies are disadvantageous for pharmaceuticals. The broadcast was called scandalous. After this scandal, the Russian national movement “Healthy Population” became interested in Giperium drops. Having teamed up with the manufacturer (S. G. Sukhanov Center for Cardiovascular Surgery), they began to disseminate information about the effectiveness of the drug.
For patients, the truth about hypertension and its treatments will help speed up their recovery.
Cardiac surgeon Bockeria Leo Antonovich speaks of hypertension as a symptom that is deeply embedded in the processes of the body.
During hypertension, the main thing is to stop the increase in blood pressure. Medicines will help with this, but the disease will not be eliminated. It is important to fight the cause, the factors that provoke increased blood pressure. And here, a lot depends on a person’s lifestyle and his attitude towards health.
Hypertension is not a death sentence, so we must fight using every opportunity to improve the situation.
