Where to go from Salzburg? Unusual places in Salzburg.
Like in a history textbook on the Middle Ages: against the backdrop of high mountains, a proud city rises on a rock and at its foot lies a city belonging to a feudal lord. Meet Salzburg. The sights of this city are inextricably linked with its ancient history; talking about them is the same as expounding the complex vicissitudes of the life of the city over the centuries.
Initially, Salzburg arose as a fortress on a rock to repel the attacks of its warlike Bavarian neighbors. Later, a city of the same name grew at the foot of the cliff. The secular and spiritual authorities of the city were represented by one person - the person of the Archbishop of Salzburg. Continuously replacing each other, these “poor men of Christ” owned all the salt mines in the surrounding lands, and in addition, they were rich owners of land. The most famous lord to whom Salzburg owes its present appearance was Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Rathenau. He is responsible for the complete reconstruction of the city. Fashionable at that time, it became the dominant feature of the city.
Which is located a little north of the Alps. Sometimes also called the “city of students”, it is home to three universities. Salzburg is also famous for the fact that the great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here. The city is the historical center of Austria.
How to get to the city
Those who would like to see the sights of Salzburg in one day can get to the city either by public transport or by private car. The city is located near the border with Germany. Since Austria is part of the European Union, this border is formal in nature, and you can cross it without hindrance. Buses from the largest cities in the country, as well as from neighboring countries, arrive at the city bus station every hour. Rail transport is also well developed. By high-speed train you can quickly get to Vienna and other cities - Rome, Berlin, Prague. Salzburg Airport, one of the largest in all of Austria, is a 20-minute drive from the historical center.
In terms of size, Salzburg ranks 4th among all Austrian cities. However, every year the flow of visitors becomes more and more. Walking through the streets of the city, you can notice a large number of churches. Salzburg is often referred to as “German Rome” in guidebooks. In order to see all the best attractions of Salzburg, reading tourist reviews is not enough. You need to do it yourself or with the help of a guide of places worth visiting. You also need to choose a good hotel from where you can explore the main historical places. If a tourist’s goal is to visit architectural monuments, then it is worth taking a closer look at hotels in the city center.
Mozart Museum
For those who would like to visit as many of Salzburg's attractions as possible in one day in winter, it is better to focus on museums. For example, the famous Mozart Museum. It is located on Domgasse street. The great composer lived in this house from 1784 to 1787. Mozart's residence can be called truly luxurious - there are as many as four rooms, as well as two offices and a kitchen.
It is known that throughout his life the great composer had a penchant for demonstrating luxury - shoes with buckles were a real necessity. In the house where the museum is located, Mozart spent his happiest years. He was surrounded by friends and received many invitations to perform concerts in the richest houses of the local nobility. Many great works were created in this house, for example, the famous opera Figaro.
Mirabell Castle
To bring home worthy photos of the sights of Salzburg, you should definitely visit Mirabell Castle. It is located on the other side of the Salzach River, approximately 1 km north of Hohensalzburg Castle.
At first he was the property of the unofficial wife of the archbishop, Salmee Alt, who bore him 15 children. However, after a short time, Alt was deposed and was replaced by Prince Zitticus, who took the mansion from the bishop. It was during the reign of Zitticus that the castle received its name “Mirabel” (“beautiful”).
Of particular interest in the decoration of the castle is the marble staircase on which there are figures of angels. It is also worth visiting the Marble Hall, where Mozart himself gave concerts. Nowadays concerts and wedding ceremonies are often held there. It is interesting that it was in this hall that the wedding of Eva Braun, Hitler’s common-law wife, took place in 1944.
Castle garden
It is impossible to visit all the attractions of Salzburg in Austria in one day. For example, to walk around the territory of the Mirabell Palace, it will take at least about 2-3 hours. After all, it is surrounded by a lush garden, decorated with numerous sculptures of characters from ancient myths. A separate part is dedicated to the “Garden of Dwarfs” - here you can see funny figures. The building of the greenhouse now houses the Baroque Museum. Currently, these gardens are very popular among guests of Salzburg.
Franciscan Church
It is difficult to see the sights of Salzburg in one day. The walking route for those tourists who would like to see as many new places as possible must definitely include churches. The oldest of them is the Franciscan Church - one of the oldest in the whole city. It has been in this place since the 8th century. Until 1635, the building served as the parish church of the Virgin Mary. Then the temple was demolished and restored again in 1866. The church interior was remodeled in Baroque style in the 18th century. Now the Franciscan Church attracts tourists with its unique mixture of several architectural styles. A 12th-century marble lion can still be seen inside the building.
Kollegienkirche
The magnificent church was built between 1694 and 1707. From the very day of its foundation, the temple became a standard of Baroque architectural style. Four separate chapels were built for the Benedictine University and symbolized the four faculties. The interior of the church is painted in an abstract style, which makes it visually larger. They say that Mozart himself was struck by the beauty of the Kollegienkirche. The great musician did not skimp and specially wrote several works for masses, which to this day take place in the traditional Catholic rhythm.
Mount Kapuzinerberg
Located in the very center of Salzburg. It is a landscaped park. At the top of the mountain there is an observation deck from where you can admire the landscapes of the city. Unfortunately, there are no escalators in the park. The climb can be difficult - the height is 700 m. However, as you climb the steps, you can first see a bust of Mozart, and then biblical scenes from the life of Christ carved on stone. Well-trodden paths will prevent you from getting lost in the forest. About a dozen wild goats live here, but they do not catch the eye of those walking around the park.
Hohenwerfen
Those who would like to visit the sights of Salzburg in one day should definitely visit one of the most picturesque Austrian castles called Hohenwerfen. It rises majestically above the Salzach River, on a site that was once strategically important for the defense of the lands. The castle was built in the 11th century to protect the possessions of Archbishop Gerbachd of Salzburg.
The castle is located 40 km from the city. You can get there in 20 minutes. For a long time, Hohenwerfen served as a defensive structure, but during one of the uprisings it was completely destroyed. The uprising was then suppressed. The same peasants who destroyed Hohenwerfen had to rebuild it as punishment. At the beginning of the 16th century, additional structures were built - turrets, bastions, and external walls. Inside the castle there is the chapel of St. Sigismund. It was reconstructed in the Gothic style. Hohenwerfen was rebuilt several times after reconstruction until it acquired its modern appearance.
Castle today
When the Napoleonic Wars began, the history of the Principality of Salzburg came to an end. At the beginning of the 19th century, Salzburg became part of Austria. The artillery pieces accumulated over a long period of time were transferred to the possession of France. They wanted to destroy Hohenwerfen itself, but King Franz II ordered that it be preserved. Currently, the castle is open to visitors. On its territory there are museums - local history, folklore. Those planning to visit the main attractions of Salzburg in one day can use the funicular. This way you can reach the castle faster and save energy. But you can get to the top of the mountain to the castle on foot. The most convenient way to get to the castle is by S-Bahn train.
Hohensalzburg
Tourists who want to visit as many of Salzburg's attractions as possible in one day should definitely visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress. It is located on the top of the Mönchsberg mountain. This is the largest fortification that has survived in Europe since the Middle Ages. The fortress is a symbol of Salzburg, and thousands of tourists come here every year. The modern appearance of Hohensalzburg Castle was given by Archbishop L. von Keutschach. At first the fortress was used as a defensive structure. Throughout its history, none of the attackers managed to conquer the structure.
The fortress is open to visitors all year round. Since 1982, you can get here not only on foot, but also by convenient funiculars that depart from Festungsgasse. Visitors should visit the Princely Chambers, the Fortress Museum, and the Puppet Museum. The fortress, whose history dates back more than nine centuries, is also the venue for the Salzburg concerts. On Sundays at 11:45 a solemn procession is held on its territory with the playing of musical instruments. The sound of fanfare can be heard throughout the Old City.
What else to see in the city
To see the sights of Salzburg in one day, the walking route can be approximately as follows: Old part of the city - Central Square - Mozart's Birthplace - Hohensalzburg Fortress - Museum of Modern Art. Those interested can also visit the Salzburg Zoo. It has created special areas for animals, where their living conditions are as close to natural as possible. For example, a special space has been created for rhinoceroses and antelopes, which is called the “African Savannah”.
The itinerary for a walk through the sights of Salzburg in one day must also include a visit to the Mozart monument. The attention of city guests will certainly be attracted by an unusual detail of the monument: instead of the usual pen, the composer holds something like a pen or pencil in his hands. Not far from the Mozart monument there is a coffee shop of the same name.
Places for different categories of tourists
You can also visit the House of Nature - one of the largest aquariums in all of Europe. Here you can admire the underwater world, for which more than 40 pools were built. Colorful reef fish live separately from reef sharks. Photos and descriptions of Salzburg attractions can be found on the Internet, but it is better for each tourist to build an individual route and visit the most interesting places for themselves. Beer connoisseurs will love Stiegl, a private brewery. Here you can watch the creation of one of the most popular drinks in Austria, and then try the best varieties of freshly brewed beer. Little tourists usually don’t like visiting museums, but they will definitely love the Toy House. In this museum you can not only hear the history of the most popular toys, but also play with new ones.
Atmosphere of the city
Photos of Salzburg sights will not be able to convey the unique atmosphere that reigns in the city. Being on the central square of the city, Residenzplatz, you can be transported back to the eighteenth century. The 35 bells of the Bishop's Residence give the square a special charm. Even if you try to explore famous places in Salzburg in one day, photos of the sights will leave the best memories of this trip. There is hardly a travel lover who would not want to return here for a longer period. For many tourists, Austria has become one of the favorite cultural holiday destinations.
If you don’t have enough time to see all the sights of Salzburg in a day, you can rent a bicycle. In total, there are about three dozen bicycle routes throughout the city.
Bicycles can be rented at 10 stations. Salzburg is sometimes called the “bicycle” capital of Austria. The rental price per day is about 40 euros.

Story
The first settlements on the site of modern Salzburg have existed since Neolithic times. Later the Celts settled here and were conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC. The city was named Yuvanum. In the 5th century AD the city was captured by the Rugian tribe.
In the 7th century, the Bavarian Duke granted these lands to Bishop Rupert, who founded several monasteries, which later became the center of the medieval city. In the 8th century, Salzburg became an episcopal residence and received its modern name, associated with the main industry - the extraction of salt deposits.
In the 11th century, the history of the city's calling card began - the Hohensalzburg fortress.
In the 13th century, Salzburg became part of the Holy Roman Empire as a principality. Later the city turns into an independent episcopal state. Final independence from Bavaria was achieved in the 14th century. Interestingly, during the times of its greatest prosperity, episcopal power extended far beyond the borders of modern Salzburg and its environs. Archbishops ruled these lands until the early 19th century.

The greatest prosperity of Salzburg occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was at this time that the city acquired the status of the Baroque capital of Europe. The archbishops, inspired by the architecture of Rome, invited Italian craftsmen who rebuilt the historical center in the Baroque style.
In the 15th century, the first brewery was built in Salzburg. The main income remained the extraction of salt.
The power of bishops ended during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1810, the former principality became part of Bavaria, and 6 years later - of Austria, which it is still part of.
The Second World War, despite the bombing of the city, practically did not damage the main attractions of Salzburg.

The beginning of construction of the Hohensalzburg fortress dates back to 1077 and is associated with Prince-Archbishop Gebhart. This map of Salzburg is also with attractions - the top 10 main attractions of Salzburg on the map are marked with numbers from one to ten. It also shows current public transport routes. You need to be especially careful with routes going along the Salzach River, since the same route can go along both banks of the river, but in different directions. It's best to check with locals to see if you're heading in the right direction. We once sat on the wrong side and drove off into the residential areas of Salzburg.
The third map of Salzburg is transport.
The biggest advantage of this map is that it shows the routes of all types of public transport in Salzburg, each stop is marked. The map is easy to navigate because there are images of the main attractions on it. Information points are also marked on it.
