Where to put the branches of cut trees. Tree cleaning
A common question when developing bushy areas is what to do with brushwood and half-rotten trunks? In the worst case, they are simply burned or taken to a landfill... as they say, "out of sight, out of mind." At best, they pass it through a crusher, producing a pile of wood chips. If you have a powerful crusher and need mulch, this is not a bad option.
Usually, the burning of logging residues is justified by “restoring order,” eliminating fire hazards, fighting pests and diseases... In the mass consciousness, “garbage” must be burned. Dot. If you agree, you don’t have to read further.
Everything is clear about the fire hazard... Alas, putting a match to a pile of brushwood is a “sacred thing” for many of our fellow citizens. :-(I’ll keep silent about the damage to the soil from the “pioneer fires”... and the arguments about the fertilizing value of the ash only cause a sad smile...
Yes, calcium, silicon, phosphorus, potassium and microelements remain in the ash... But all organic matter (along with nitrogen) futilely flies into the air. But this is “potential” humus... Any gardener knows that you cannot compare a handful of ash and a wheelbarrow of compost.
As for the fight against pests and diseases that supposedly multiply en masse in logging residues... I’ll also argue.
The crushing of branches to obtain wood chips is justified by the convenience of using wood chips (there is no dispute here) and the accelerated decomposition of wood. Yes, wood chips decompose approximately twice as fast as branches... But the accelerated decomposition of wood “switches off” a huge number of ecological niches from the ecosystem... This is achieved by monotonous work, 100-decibel noise and burning a canister or two of gasoline. There is, of course, less smoke than from a fire... And organic matter (wood chips) goes into use...
Alas, at the same time a huge number of small animals and mushrooms are destroyed (and deprived of shelter). Those that lived in these same trunks and branches... turning them into humus... maintaining biological balance... It is worth mentioning that a good crusher costs like a good car... and a bad one costs like a bad one :-) All household crushers (up to 20 hp) are only suitable for slowly grinding tops and soft twigs. Verified.

But there is another option for recycling brushwood, much more economical, as environmentally friendly as possible... and even aesthetically pleasing :-) I’ll share our experience.
We recently expanded the territory of Botanical Garden 365 - we acquired an adjacent plot, in some places densely overgrown with wild self-seeding trees and shrubs. After the initial clearing of the thorn and blackberry thickets (the trimmings went into compost), for the first year we monitored the growth and condition of the existing trees on the new site. We looked at what could be included in the picture of the garden (leave as is, reshape, re-graft...), and what should be removed (sick, unnecessary, absolutely not fit).
As a result, 20 percent of the existing plantings were left, the rest had to be cut down. The result was about 5 cubic meters of excellent firewood (they were taken out), about 3 cubic meters of “not so good” firewood (rotten, clumsy, thick...) and a huge amount of brushwood... The brushwood was immediately arranged in three piles, compacted, stacked more densely, sawed with a chainsaw for better shrinkage...
Yes, the place for each heap was carefully chosen. With the expectation that in three to five years each heap will turn into a good dump truck of “forest” humus. And so as not to carry branches too far... And so that the piles do not interfere with priority planting... And do not interfere with mowing down the growth from the remaining stumps (and this will have to be done for two years).
The piles of brushwood turned out to be quite large, the largest one being approximately 7m x 5m in plan and 1.5-2 meters in height. They didn't look very aesthetically pleasing...
After we “walked” along the perimeter of the heaps with pruning shears and a chainsaw, giving them a more “rounded” shape, it became beautiful :-) It took about 40 minutes. The “hedgehogs” turned out to be quite cute. And the dimensions were reduced... by about half a meter on each side.
And it became really good when we covered the compacted brushwood with “defective” firewood, mossy stumps, and hollow cuttings. Now you can mow down bushes and grass, coming close to the heaps, without the risk of breaking the fishing line (and without killing a gaping snake). The results were quite nice “objects”, land art in its purest form... :-)
Plus - a huge number of shelters for small animals (from predatory ticks, centipedes, wasps and ground beetles to... mice, hedgehogs, snakes and lizards). Now everyone who used to live in the thickets (which we cleared) will come running here in the spring...
Plus - places for recycling kitchen and garden waste. In the middle of each pile there is a large nest-shaped depression so that fresh organic matter is not visible from the side.
Plus - “reserves” for the resettlement of mosses and lichens for new plantings (there are almost no mature trees left).
And in a few years, in the place of this “land art” (it’s hard to call it heaps), on a thick layer of loose wood compost, in the partial shade between already grown trees, there will be ideal conditions for planting forest herbs and evergreen shrubs. For everything that needs “forest” conditions.
Yes, heaps can be of any shape, not necessarily round... They can be made S-shaped, C-shaped, Y-shaped (top view)... They can be “fitted” between abandoned trees, roads, etc.
You can form semi-shaded “quiet areas” with good snow accumulation - excellent places for planting trees and shrubs in an open area.
And, of course, it is not at all necessary to cover piles of brushwood with illicit firewood. It is quite enough to “cut” and trim the edges.

Disposal of branches. October 25th, 2014
Every gardener, with varying degrees of frequency, faces this problem... branches. More precisely... with the problem of their disposal.
It would seem, what’s the problem?
He collected them in a heap and burned them.
But it's not that simple.
First of all, branches are not firewood. Although they are also wooden, they burn rather reluctantly, due to the fact that the twig mass is loose. For this reason, they do not have enough heat for proper combustion and for the most part they do not burn, but burn.
Burning branches in a container is a total pain. There are not enough branches to fit into it. And this is the second reason that everything is not so simple.
The third follows from this.
When burning a large volume of branches, it takes a lot of time, since you need to constantly be near such a fire.
Well, the fourth and perhaps the most serious is smoke.
The smoke from the branches is strong, since before they are burned, the branches are usually in the open air and therefore damp.
About two years ago we were rejuvenating part of a privet hedge.
Radically rejuvenated. That is... all the branches were cut off almost, as they say, at the root. There were a lot of branches. I then inhaled a fair amount of smoke, got scratched by branches, spent a lot of time, but still burned.
This year we had to dispose of the second part of the privet hedge after radical rejuvenation.
This unit, which I had been thinking about for a long time, was supposed to help me with this, but somehow I didn’t dare to buy it.
This is a shredder or wood chipper. Two and a half kilowatt branch. He chops branches and not only into wood chips quite mercilessly.
A pile of apricot branches (as in the first photo) + branches from a broken acacia tree + a pile of cut grapevines fit into three construction wheelbarrows like this.
This is the consistency...
It took about three hours to dispose of this volume.
Now we had to dispose of the second pile of privet branches and apricot trunks.
Privet wood is quite hard. Schroeder had to work hard to process all this mass. But he still coped with this task.
This photo shows the whole pile of privet branches after running them through the shredder.
In terms of volume, this is two construction wheelbarrows with this consistency.
I sawed the apricot trunks, partly with a hand power saw, and partly with a circular saw, into logs and sent them to the hangar to dry. It turned out to be two construction wheelbarrows. From them I will make a path from saw cuts.
Small branches, there were also two wheelbarrows of them, will be used for firewood for the outdoor fireplace and for the barbecue. They are also in the hangar to dry.
There was also a wheelbarrow of acacia bark.
After processing it through a shredder, I learned this wonderful thing.
And this is what the reeds look like after being run through a shredder.
I used it to experimentally mulch a cherry seedling.
But we have a lot of reeds. There will be plenty to do in winter.
So.
I got rid of two large piles of branches and trunks from a felled tree, spending about the same amount of time, if not less, as I once spent burning a pile of branches at least half the size.
Result.
About six wheelbarrows of beautiful mulch, two wheelbarrows of sawdust for the path and two wheelbarrows of firewood for the outdoor fireplace and barbecue. And no smoke.
However... I swept the remains of the branches into a small pile and decided to burn them in a small barrel...
That's what came out of it.))
From a small pile of branches it turned out... a handful of ash and a huge mass smoke.
As they say... feel the difference.))
And also... in the process of sawing apricot branches, this interesting thing turned out.
From a trip to Guzeripl (Adygea) we brought a souvenir for which we could not find a suitable place.
Here it is found.))
This concludes my story. It remains to inform my wonderful readers that in they helped me in recycling branches:
1. Electric pruning shears.
2. Elmos shredder
3. Champion hand saw
4. Circular saw from an unknown manufacturer
5. Ear protection
6. Safety glasses
7. Construction wheelbarrow
8. Rake
9. Snow shovel
10. Panicle
11. Gloves.
12. 220 volts
and natural curiosity.))
See you again.))
“We will accept cut trees for disposal and recycling. We accept both branches and tree trunks. We will always find a common language with those who remove trees and those who remove cut timber. We are ready to accept from one bunker with a saw cut, up to a hundred bunkers per day.”
Ilya Nikonov, head of the wood recycling department.
You will be very surprised when you have cut down several massive trees on your property and do not know where to put them. Since you don’t need wood in the form of firewood, and you can’t throw it away. You are tired of burning branches, since freshly cut branches burn very poorly. But mulching branches is time-consuming and expensive. There is a way out.
We accept cut trees. By agreement, it is possible to accept both tree trunks and branches.
We invite to cooperation both individuals and organizations involved in sawing, sawdust and felling of trees, as well as companies involved in the removal of construction waste, etc.
The main bases for receiving cut trees are located in the north of the Moscow region: Dmitrov, Sergiev Posad.
We are ready to cooperate with you from one bunker per month to one hundred per day, everything can be discussed.
Attention: We accept wood (cutting trees) only with your delivery; we are not interested in self-pickup.
Attention: We only accept logs and branches, without any foreign matter.
Tree branches, stems of fruit-bearing raspberries, Jerusalem artichokes, corn and sunflowers rot for too long, they cannot be put into compost along with other weeds and waste. So how to use them?
Firstly, they can be burned. But for a fire you need quite a lot of space, the day should be without rain and wind, and the flames can burn the tops of the trees. You can use an old rusty barrel that has a lot of holes in the bottom for a fire. Place the barrel on 3-4 stones, there will be good traction from below. Fill the barrel with rubbish that needs to be burned and set it on fire, and to prevent the flame from rising high, cover the top of the barrel with a sheet of old iron or a metal lid from the same barrel, and you can burn safely in any weather. When everything has burned down and the ash has cooled, turn the barrel over and collect the ash in a separate container.
Secondly, coarse branches and stems are very suitable for organizing the drainage of excess water from the site. Dig trenches along and across the site, gradually deepening them towards the flow of water into the ditches. A slope of just 1 degree is enough, and the water will flow in the given direction. If the ditches along the site are shallow, then deepen them. Place bundles of tied branches or stems at the bottom of such grooves. Lightly cover with sand and return the excavated soil to its place, place a board on top and trample down. On these low beds you can plant all kinds of garden herbs or carrots.
Thirdly, branches and stems can be laid in wide trenches for future planting of raspberries or other berry bushes with a shallow root system. First dig a trench approximately 70 cm wide and a depth of a shovel bayonet. Place all the prepared material in it and cover it with soil dug from the trench. Sprinkle 5-6 cm of rotted compost on top and sow with herbs, beets, plant onions, radishes, in general, use the first year for garden crops. In the fall, after harvesting, make a shallow trench, 6–7 cm deep, the width of a shovel, add vegetable peelings, kitchen waste, weeded weeds into it and return the dug soil from above. In the spring, you can again use the bed for vegetables or annual flowers, and at the end of August, plant raspberries here. It will grow and bear fruit wonderfully for you and will not spread in all directions, especially if you continue to pour slops under it and throw away waste, mulching the waste with weeded weeds.
Fourthly, all coarse garden waste can be placed in the base of a high, warm bed. You can also put pieces of cardboard, torn unnecessary books and magazines there. Place crumpled paper or newspapers on top, interspersing everything with soil. Then regular compost throughout the season and finally, at the very end of summer, add a layer of 5-6 cm of fertile soil. You can sprinkle the layers with superphosphate (3-4 spoons per layer) and a little ash (1-2 cups per layer). In the spring, to warm up such a high bed (about a meter high and wide), you will need to pour 4-5 buckets of hot water on it and cover it with old film. After a week, the soil will warm up and you can sow vegetable seeds. The bed will work for several years, just don’t forget to warm it up with hot water in the spring. Otherwise, instead of a warm bed, you will have a glacier.

We sowed or planted most of the plants in the spring and it seems that in the middle of summer we can already relax. But experienced gardeners know that July is the time to plant vegetables to obtain a late harvest and the possibility of longer storage. This also applies to potatoes. It is better to use the early summer potato harvest quickly; it is not suitable for long-term storage. But the second harvest of potatoes is exactly what is needed for winter and spring use.
Astrakhan tomatoes ripen remarkably well lying on the ground, but this experience should not be repeated in the Moscow region. Our tomatoes need support, support, garter. My neighbors use all sorts of stakes, tie-downs, loops, ready-made plant supports and mesh fencing. Each method of fixing a plant in a vertical position has its own advantages and “side effects”. I'll tell you how I place tomato bushes on trellises and what comes out of it.
Bulgur with pumpkin is an every day dish that can be easily prepared in half an hour. Bulgur is boiled separately, the cooking time depends on the size of the grains - whole and coarse grinding takes about 20 minutes, fine grinding literally a few minutes, sometimes the cereal is simply poured with boiling water, like couscous. While the cereal is cooking, prepare the pumpkin in sour cream sauce, and then combine the ingredients. If you replace melted butter with vegetable oil and sour cream with soy cream, then it can be included in the Lenten menu.
Flies are a sign of unsanitary conditions and carriers of infectious diseases that are dangerous to both people and animals. People are constantly looking for ways to get rid of unpleasant insects. In this article we will talk about the Zlobny TED brand, which specializes in fly repellents and knows a lot about them. The manufacturer has developed a specialized line of products to get rid of flying insects anywhere quickly, safely and at no extra cost.
The summer months are the time for hydrangeas to bloom. This beautiful deciduous shrub produces luxuriously fragrant flowers from June to September. Florists readily use large inflorescences for wedding decorations and bouquets. To admire the beauty of a flowering hydrangea bush in your garden, you should take care of the proper conditions for it. Unfortunately, some hydrangeas do not bloom year after year, despite the care and efforts of gardeners. We will explain why this happens in the article.
Every summer resident knows that plants need nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for full development. These are three main macronutrients, the deficiency of which significantly affects the appearance and yield of plants, and in advanced cases can lead to their death. But not everyone understands the importance of other macro- and microelements for plant health. And they are important not only in themselves, but also for the effective absorption of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
Garden strawberries, or strawberries, as we used to call them, are one of the early aromatic berries that summer generously gifts us with. How happy we are about this harvest! In order for the “berry boom” to repeat every year, we need to take care of the berry bushes in the summer (after the end of fruiting). The laying of flower buds, from which ovaries will form in the spring and berries in the summer, begins approximately 30 days after the end of fruiting.
Spicy pickled watermelon is a savory appetizer for fatty meat. Watermelons and watermelon rinds have been pickled since time immemorial, but this process is labor-intensive and time-consuming. According to my recipe, you can simply prepare pickled watermelon in 10 minutes, and by the evening the spicy appetizer will be ready. Watermelon marinated with spices and chili can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. Be sure to keep the jar in the refrigerator, not only for the sake of safety - when chilled, this snack is simply licking your fingers!
Among the variety of species and hybrids of philodendrons, there are many plants, both gigantic and compact. But not a single species competes in unpretentiousness with the main modest one - the blushing philodendron. True, his modesty does not concern the appearance of the plant. Blushing stems and cuttings, huge leaves, long shoots, forming, although very large, but also a strikingly elegant silhouette, look very elegant. Philodendron blushing requires only one thing - at least minimal care.
Thick chickpea soup with vegetables and egg is a simple recipe for a hearty first course, inspired by oriental cuisine. Similar thick soups are prepared in India, Morocco, and Southeast Asian countries. The tone is set by spices and seasonings - garlic, chili, ginger and a bouquet of spicy spices, which can be assembled to your taste. It is better to fry vegetables and spices in clarified butter (ghee) or mix olive and butter in a pan; this, of course, is not the same, but it tastes similar.
Plum - well, who isn’t familiar with it?! She is loved by many gardeners. And all because it has an impressive list of varieties, surprises with excellent yields, pleases with its diversity in terms of ripening and a huge selection of color, shape and taste of fruits. Yes, in some places it feels better, in others it feels worse, but almost no summer resident gives up the pleasure of growing it on his plot. Today it can be found not only in the south, in the middle zone, but also in the Urals and Siberia.
Many ornamental and fruit crops, except drought-resistant ones, suffer from the scorching sun, and conifers in the winter-spring period suffer from sunlight, enhanced by reflection from the snow. In this article we will tell you about a unique product for protecting plants from sunburn and drought - Sunshet Agrosuccess. The problem is relevant for most regions of Russia. In February and early March, the sun's rays become more active, and the plants are not yet ready for new conditions.
“Every vegetable has its own time,” and every plant has its own optimal time for planting. Anyone who has dealt with planting is well aware that the hot season for planting is spring and autumn. This is due to several factors: in the spring the plants have not yet begun to grow rapidly, there is no sweltering heat and precipitation often falls. However, no matter how hard we try, circumstances often develop such that planting has to be carried out in the midst of summer.
Chili con carne translated from Spanish means chili with meat. This is a Texas and Mexican dish whose main ingredients are chili peppers and shredded beef. In addition to the main products there are onions, carrots, tomatoes, and beans. This red lentil chili recipe is delicious! The dish is fiery, scalding, very filling and amazingly tasty! You can make a big pot, put it in containers and freeze - you'll have a delicious dinner for a whole week.
Cucumber is one of the most favorite garden crops of our summer residents. However, not all and not always gardeners manage to get a really good harvest. And although growing cucumbers requires regular attention and care, there is a little secret that will significantly increase their yield. We are talking about pinching cucumbers. Why, how and when to pinch cucumbers, we will tell you in the article. An important point in the agricultural technology of cucumbers is their formation, or type of growth.
