Costa del Sol Spain climate. When is the best time to go on holiday to the Costa del Sol? Malaga is the center of transport links with other regions of Spain, the Canary Islands, and neighboring Portugal
Greetings to all visitors to my blog about independent travel and tourism! Summer vacation time will begin very soon - that is why I think it is necessary to tell you about the famous region for beach and excursion holidays, which is located in Spain and is a very popular tourist destination in Europe.
Map of the Costa del Sol or where the alluring “Sunny Beach” is located
The name of the Spanish coast, Costa del Sol, means “Sunny Beach”. It must be said that this name is fully justified, because almost the entire year (11 months) the hot sun reigns in the region. The Costa del Sol is located in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, and the length of the area is about 300 kilometers.
The region has a distinctive appearance, it is the result of the fusion of many cultures and religions: Christian, Muslim, Greek, Roman and Phoenician. The Costa del Sol neighbors the city of Lgeciras in the west, Almeria in the east, and belongs to the autonomous region of Andalusia. Tourists who have no financial restrictions when choosing a place for an elite holiday give preference to the resorts of the Costa del Sol. And not only because the coast has all the conditions for a truly royal pastime - many are attracted here by the unique and inimitable nature, as well as the favorable Mediterranean climate.
The fashionable region offers tourists to get acquainted with the peculiarities of life in Andalusia, to spend an unforgettable holiday on the beaches of famous resort centers such as Benalmadena, Marbella, Torremolinos and Fuengirola. The romance of a trip to the Costa del Sol makes hearts beat faster, the atmosphere of an eternal holiday beckons and attracts, you want to come back here again and again.
Climate and weather in Costa del Sol
The climate of the Costa del Sol is typical of the Mediterranean region - it is characterized by hot, dry summers and winters with moderate temperatures. In general, as mentioned earlier, it can be noted that The weather in the Costa del Sol is virtually favorable for year-round holidays— the number of sunny days per year is approximately 330. The greatest amount of precipitation in the region, according to statistics, falls between October and March, and it is the latter that can be called the rainiest month (about 35 mm of precipitation). In April and May, it rains here no more than 6 days a month, and given the favorable air temperature of 15 to 23 degrees Celsius, we can say that a holiday trip to the Costa del Sol in May is hardly a gamble.
The peak holiday season on the southern Spanish coast is the summer months, as well as the beginning of autumn. This period of time is characterized by hot weather, as well as virtually complete absence of rain. The average daily temperature in summer is about 25 degrees. But still, perhaps the most attractive time for a holiday in the Costa del Sol is the month of September - the crowds of tourists dissipate after the summer influx, the ideal water temperature for beach holidays and air temperature for walks and excursions to local attractions are established on the coast.
Friends, I suggest you take a short break and just admire the panoramas of the Costa del Sol on video...
How to get to Costa del Sol
We have already dealt with the location of Sunny Beach in one of the previous sections, so now we will consider another pressing issue for those who plan to go to Costa del Sol on your own - how to get to the coast and resorts of southern Spain.
Flight to Malaga
Malaga is located directly on the Mediterranean coast in the Costa del Sol region and flying to Malaga is the most convenient way to get to local resorts. For reference, you can fly to Malaga from Moscow or St. Petersburg on both regular and charter airline flights.
Regular direct flights from Moscow to Malaga are operated by the domestic air carrier Aeroflot, about which you can leave your details. On average, the cost of a round trip flight in economy class is around 15 thousand rubles. If you want to travel on a budget, then using my advice there are options to book tickets at a price of up to 10 thousand rubles.
Many European airlines fly to Malaga with transfers, such as Iberia, Vueling, Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Air France and many others. If you are lucky enough to be on sale for one of the airlines listed above, you can save significantly on a flight to the south of Spain.
In general, I want to say that there are many different options, nuances and factors when searching for a flight, and if you describe them all, it will take a huge amount of time. Moreover, in the matter of air tickets, each individual case is unique; a lot depends on your desires and needs (for example, someone is looking for a flight for a certain time, while another does not care at all about the time, but is interested in the cheapest price). Therefore, if you have any difficulties or questions about choosing a flight to Malaga - don't hesitate to contact me via the comment form at the bottom of the page, or directly by email [email protected], I will definitely help you with advice to find the most optimal flight option.
Also, you can look and book a flight to Malaga right now, for this I recommend the cheapest one.
How to get from Barcelona to Costa del Sol
The distance from the capital of Catalonia to the southern coast of Spain is about 1000 km, I will offer below various transport options how to get from Barcelona to Malaga is the largest city on the Costa del Sol.
1) By car. The distance between the points is considerable, but traveling from Barcelona to Malaga by car has its advantages: the main ones are freedom and unlimited action; on the way to the coast you can “drop in” and spend the night, for example, in Valencia or Murcia. I think you understand that the costs for this kind of trip will be appropriate.
2) Flight Barcelona - Malaga with Vueling airlines, perhaps this is the fastest and most optimal way get to the resorts of the Costa del Sol. One-way tickets start from just 50 euros.
3) An option for those who do not like to fly is the AVE high-speed train from Barcelona to Malaga (with a transfer in Madrid). The total travel time is around 6 hours (which is basically comparable to a flight, taking into account registration, waiting for the flight and luggage). You can book train tickets on the website http://www.renfe.com (there is an English version).
Friends, I suggest you take a little break from the text and take a walk through the streets of Marbella...

Thank you for your attention, I hope that this article was useful to you. You can leave your questions or suggestions in the comment form below, I will certainly answer them :-). In the future there will be more materials about holidays on the Costa del Sol, I think it’s worth telling in more detail about the popular resorts, but here only their description was given in a few words. I wish you all a fantastic holiday in Spain!
They are characterized by special softness, creating excellent conditions for relaxing with children at any time of the year. Translated from Spanish, Costa del Sol means “Sunny Coast”, and this name fully justifies itself. The number of sunny days here exceeds 320 per year, and gray cloudy skies rarely darken the mood of tourists and local residents.
The weather on the coast is truly unique. The average annual temperature here is +18 ºC; there are no swelteringly hot temperatures in summer or freezing temperatures in winter. Moreover, in winter the temperature, as a rule, does not fall below +12ºC. In summer, mild weather is formed by the cool Atlantic current, which cools the air masses, as well as the Sierra Morena mountain range, which does not allow hot continental air to reach the coast. In winter, the Sierra Morena mountains, on the contrary, do not let in cold continental air, and the Atlantic Ocean serves as a heat accumulator. The climate on the Costa del Sol is generally recognized as one of the healthiest and most favorable not only in Europe, but throughout the world.
From the above diagram it can be seen that the climate on the Costa del Sol is characterized by warm, mild winters with an average temperature of +16ºC. Summer is not as unbearably sultry and hot as, for example, in Seville, located in the mainland of Spain, and the daytime air temperature on the coast does not rise above +32ºC. Due to such unique climatic conditions, many Spaniards in the summer seek to escape from the hot continent to this very place on the coast. One of the best months to holiday here is September. Most tourists are already returning to work in their hometowns, and the resort is becoming less busy. At the same time, the water has not yet had time to cool down, and the average air temperature is +31ºC.
Speaking of weather, special attention should be paid to water temperature. The water on the Costa del Sol is somewhat cooler than in many other resorts. This is due to the influence of the cool Atlantic current. However, this also has its advantages. Firstly, the water really refreshes you from the bright southern sun that warms the beach. Secondly, the water here is very clean, and its temperature prevents the proliferation of various microbes and bacteria, which feel very comfortable at a temperature of 30ºC.
The water warms up well in July - August, and its average temperature in these months is +24ºC. In September the water is even warmer, so the beach season continues here.
The most popular and most fashionable resort in Spain, the Costa del Sol, stretches 150 km along the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula from the coastal villages of the province of Malaga to the Strait of Gibraltar. Today, famous and important people on the planet prefer to relax here: Hollywood stars, popular artists, show business figures, politicians, aristocrats. If you also want to join the list of lucky people who vacationed on the Costa del Sol, find out first on the Tour Calendar why the best time to travel here is considered to be the end of spring - the beginning of summer, as well as the first half of autumn.
Tourist season on the Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol resort has this name for a reason. Translated into Russian it sounds like “Sunny Beach”. Indeed, there is a magnificent climate all year round, accompanied by 325 sunny days a year. The clearest Mediterranean Sea, golden sandy beaches, numerous opportunities for water sports, a string of first-class restaurants and bars, lively discos and parties, more than 60 golf courses - it is for this glamorous resort luxury that millions of tourists go to the Costa del Sol annually from April to October. Also, this is a favorite vacation spot for married couples with children, who appreciate the gentle entrance to the water, the warm sea and the comfortable conditions created for the stay of young travelers.
High season
Summer on the Costa del Sol is hectic, with bustling streets and a bustling crowd of multinational tourists. Harbors loaded with luxurious snow-white yachts, crowded beaches and coastal cafes, boutiques and outlets packed to capacity - everywhere you look, crowds of tourists are everywhere.
Low season
Things are completely different during the low season, which on the Costa del Sol lasts from November to April, when the ancient history of the cities and their natural beauty come first. An exception may be the Christmas holidays, which, as you know, create incredible excitement throughout Spain.
Beach season on the Costa del Sol
The beach season on the Costa del Sol begins in May, but swimming will only be possible in early June, when the water warms up to 20 °C-21 °C. Such relatively late dates are due to the cold Atlantic current entering the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar. But as for the duration of the swimming season, it is much longer on Sunny Beach than on the entire southern coast - up to mid-October.
Velvet season on the Costa del Sol
In September, the weather brings a weakening of the summer heat, and the water still remains at the same temperature levels. It becomes safer to sunbathe, while the number of vacationers decreases significantly along with fabulous prices. The name of this attractive “phenomenon” is the velvet season, which comes to an end only in October.
Best time for excursions
Costa del Sol is a unique place in terms of its rich excursion program. To visit the Tivoli amusement park and the Torremolinos water park, the best time of year is warm but not hot, namely: May, the first half of June, September and October. It is better to postpone a visit to a safari park and get to know the architectural splendor of resort cities until the winter, since the weather allows you to spend a lot of time outdoors.
It's time for the holidays
The cities of the Costa del Sol resort area are not only good in the dazzling light of artificial (read “tourist”) spotlights, but also when it comes to true values and traditions. From the end of February to the beginning of March, the entire coast is in the grip of carnival fever: costume processions, flower balls, a cheerful staged procession “Funeral of the Sardine”. Easter is celebrated in a particularly enchanting manner in Malaga, where, during a solemn procession, multi-ton sculptures of scenes of the Passion of the Lord are carried along the entire city. On the first day of May, residents of the city of Mijas walk at the opening of the sardine season, “Sardinada,” during which up to a ton of fried fish is consumed. "Summer Solstice" or St. Juana is celebrated on the night of June 23 with the obligatory lighting of bonfires and abundant feasts. On July 16, they remember St. Carmen, the patroness of all fishermen. On the first Sunday of August, when you find yourself in Benalauria, it’s like you’re in the Middle Ages - this is the holiday of the Moors and Christians. October 7th is a special day for all of Andalusia, “Feria del Rosario”, on which a festive fair opens and horse processions are held.
Sale season
The Costa del Sol also offers endless possibilities for brilliant shopping. The sales season here takes place twice a year: in winter - from the second week of January to the end of February, in summer - from the first days of July to the end of August.
Climate of the Costa del Sol
The climate of the Costa del Sol is typical Mediterranean: hot, dry summers, warm and wet winters. As many as 325 sunny days a year have earned it the reputation of the “Coast of the Sun”. The range of temperature fluctuations throughout the year is not large: the minimum air temperature in winter is 6 °C, the maximum summer extreme is +29 °C.
Costa del Sol in spring
Spring is a wonderful time of year on the Costa del Sol. Already in March, the air temperature reaches 18 °C, warming up in April and May to 21 °C and 23 °C, respectively. It's warm and sunny in spring. And after a light rain, the air becomes especially clean and fresh. But if during the day everyone dresses in T-shirts and shorts, then in the evening, willy-nilly, you remember that it’s still not summer outside: the air cools to 9 °C-13 °C. In mid-May, everyone flocks to the beaches - this is actually why most tourists come here, because the water becomes more or less comfortable for swimming.

This is a distinctive feature of this section of the south coast. In the evening, a refreshing coolness sets in: the thermometer drops by an average of 10 °C. Costa del Sol is the southernmost with the most favorable weather conditions compared to other resorts. The tourist brand Costa del Sol, translated from Spanish as Sunny Beach, was developed in the mid-20th century, quickly gaining popularity. Here the sun shines 320 days a year, and in winter you can visit the Sierra Nevada ski resort while relaxing on the beach. From Manilva to Nerja, the Costa del Sol coastline stretches 161 kilometers long.
In the very center of the resort coast is the administrative center of the province of the same name, a city that is part of the autonomy. The Cordillera Betica mountain range stretches along the coast, which, by the way, provides good weather and a unique microclimate, shielding the Costa del Sol from the flow of continental air masses. Coastal cliffs create picturesque bays. The stone landscape is mixed with extensive coniferous forests. Vast territories are occupied by natural parks and reserves.
When organizing a seaside holiday in Spain, the mild winter weather of the Costa del Sol is chosen by those tourists who are exhausted by the summer heat, and light freshness is the best option. In the winter months, from December to February, the temperature regime is reminiscent of European autumn with temperatures up to 20°C, sometimes more. The water temperature in the coastal waters is 15°C-17°C. Those wishing to carry out water procedures can use the heated swimming pools at the hotels. Especially popular in winter. There are not many tourists, prices for accommodation and flights are much lower. Relaxation on the beaches can be combined with a visit to skiing and snowboarding.
The spring weather of the Costa del Sol differs from winter with a slight increase in temperature by 2-3°C. In March, the temperature consistently stays at 18°C and above, at night from 11°C. As usual, it is warm and sunny here, after short rains the air becomes fresher and cleaner. The surrounding mountains bloom in a variety of colors. Already in mid-May, a full-fledged beach season begins, the air warms up to 24°C, the water acquires a bathing temperature of about 18°C. There is practically no rain in May, with only occasional minor precipitation. The influx of tourists begins, and the doors of amusement parks at resorts open.
The weather on the Costa del Sol opens the beach season as early as May, but peak attendance at resorts occurs from June to September. The thermometer in June rises above 27°C, cloudless skies and gentle sun provide vacationers with an unrivaled tan. Water about +20 °C. As the sun sets, the air becomes especially fresh. Short-term precipitation in May accounts for only 5 days of the month. During evening walks along the picturesque embankments, it is recommended to take a light sweater.
July and August on the Costa del Sol are considered to be the warmest of the year. Despite the hot weather, the coast does not feel dry due to high humidity. The air temperature ranges from 26°C to 32°C. On days of sweltering heat, when in many ancient cities it is already over 40°C, the coastline is much fresher, thanks to the Mediterranean breeze. The maximum heating of water on the Costa del Sol, up to 23°C, occurs in August. This month, the evening water temperature becomes equal to the air temperature. Even at the end of August the weather does not foretell the onset of autumn.
With the onset of autumn, the flow of tourists does not decrease; the velvet season on the Costa del Sol lasts until mid-November and is considered the longest in Spain. The sun is no longer so hot, the weather is most favorable for safe tanning and daytime spending time at sea. Despite a slight decrease in temperature, the water on the Costa del Sol remains at the same levels of more than 20°C. We are also pleased with the prices for accommodation, which are several times lower than in summer. The average air temperature in September is about 23°C, in October it drops to 22°C. In November, there is often light rain. Those who like to walk at night are advised to stock up on warm clothes.
You can go explore the rich history, unique historical heritage and largest entertainment centers of the Costa del Sol at any time of the year. The most suitable weather for organizing individual and group excursions in Andalusia is when there is no scorching heat or heavy rain. To visit the ancients, it is recommended to choose the winter months. It is at this time that the cities are very calm, there is no summer heat, bustle or long lines, and the weather is favorable for spending time in the fresh air.
The resort area of the Costa del Sol is one of the most beautiful and most attractive regions of Spain for tourists. It is part of the autonomous region of Andalusia. Previously, this part of the Spanish coast was filled with fishing towns and villages, which gradually grew into large cities that became tourist centers. In addition, wealthy Spaniards and residents of other countries very often purchase real estate here.
The largest city in the region is Malaga. Also worth mentioning is the popular city of Marbella, as well as the towns of Estepona and Puerto Banus - one of the most exclusive destinations in the Costa del Sol area. Other famous cities on the tourist map of Spain and Andalusia are, of course, cities such as: Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Manilva, Velez-Malaga, Rincon de la Victoria and Nerja Torrox.
The Costa del Sol stretches from the Maro Rock in the east to Punto Chullera in the west. Traces of the first settlements on the Costa del Sol date back to the Bronze Age. This part of the coast of Spain was colonized and administered by the various cultures of the peoples who lived in this corner of Spain. First they were the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and later the Romans, Visigoths and Arabs.
The Costa del Sol receives about 2 million tourists every year. Most of them arrive here through the international airport in Malaga.
The average annual temperature on the Costa del Sol is 18 degrees Celsius. It is worth noting that there are on average about 300 sunny days a year. It is therefore not surprising that this coast of Spain attracts millions of tourists from all over Europe every year.
There are 70 golf courses in the area that are open to golfers throughout the year. Other popular activities for holidaymakers on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia include: diving in the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, horse riding, swimming, hiking, tennis. The list doesn't end there. It is believed that 300 thousand foreigners are currently permanently residing in the Costa del Sol resort area, of which the vast majority are British.
Story This region of Spain dates back to antiquity, even before the birth of Christ. This area was inhabited by the Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, and Carthaginians. However, the most significant legacy in the historical part of Andalusia was left by the Moors, who lived here for almost 700 years. Islamic culture is evident in architecture, music, decoration, construction and trade. The most striking example is the Alhambra Palace, the architecture of Granada and the architecture and monuments of the city of Cordoba. Let's not forget the beautiful Seville, which is one of the largest cities in Spain and the capital of Andalusia.
Now the Costa del Sol is the most developed tourist region in Spain with many Mediterranean-style villas, a labyrinth of narrow streets and excellent holiday conditions. The area extends over a distance of 160 km along the Mediterranean coast. The best means of transport here is a car or public transport, as the network of bus routes in Andalusia is quite well developed.
However, the Costa del Sol was only discovered as a tourist area in the 1950s, when mass tourism began to grow after the Second World War. This is especially true of rapidly developing post-war Western Europe. It's not just the golden beaches of the Costa del Sol that attract foreign tourists. In addition to them, objects of attraction are: Spanish culture, art, works of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, local cuisine and much more. In one of the parks in Marbella, to this day you can admire the sculptures of Salvador Dali.
Climate of the Costa del Sol
The climate in the Costa del Sol resort area is considered one of the best in Europe. In winter, temperatures rarely drop below 5 degrees Celsius, while most of the summer is hot but very pleasant (due to the cooling sea breeze). In summer, temperatures rarely exceed 38 degrees Celsius. Here you will find ideal conditions for relaxation and for bringing home a beautiful tan.
On the Costa del Sol you won't find snow even in winter; it can be seen in the mountains in the northern part of Andalusia.
Cities and resorts Malaga
Malaga
Only a small proportion of tourists arriving in Malaga take the time to explore this beautiful Andalusian city, as the majority travel directly from the airport to other resort towns on the Costa del Sol. Malaga is a beautiful city, full of monuments, modern shopping centers. There is a breathtaking old town near the Roman theater and the Palace of Mauretania. Malaga has a vibrant nightlife with many fine restaurants, bars and clubs.
Although Malaga doesn't make much of an impression at first glance, once you get to know it better you'll likely come to really like this city, which is the second largest in Andalusia after Seville. Here you can visit the Picasso Museum, which houses a rich collection of the artist's works.
Tourists usually stay in hotels in small towns near Malaga, so they have the opportunity to explore the city. But, unfortunately, few people go to Malaga for sightseeing. Malaga airport is relatively far from the city center. This is one of the main reasons why tourists do not come to the center of Malaga for sightseeing.
There are plenty of interesting places in Malaga. The most popular places here are:
- El Chorro Gorge. This giant gorge was created by three cracks in the limestone massif.
- Museum of Pablo Picasso, a native of Malaga. Located in the Buenavista Castle, built in the 16th century. The museum's collection includes 150 paintings by Picasso, donated by the artist's family.
- Restaurants in Malaga. The list of restaurants in this city is simply huge. Each of them has its own unique atmosphere. You can visit these places and try local cuisine.
Also worth noting is the Feeria de Malaga, an annual festival held in August. Its roots go back to 1487.
Marbella
Walking through the back streets of Old Marbella, you will see many white buildings, some dating back to the early 16th century. If you prefer a 'rural atmosphere', peace and quiet, just a few kilometers from Marbella is the Sierra Bermeia area with beautiful mountains and hiking trails that provide excellent walking opportunities in the area.
In Marbella you will find very expensive villas and estates owned by Arab sheikhs and Colombian mafia bosses. Arabs began to settle here after the King of Saudi Arabia, Fahd, built himself a mansion on the outskirts of Marbella, similar to the White House with a mosque nearby.
Estepona
Estepona is famous for its old town, narrow streets and authentic Spanish atmosphere. The city also has a large number of atmospheric bars and amazingly beautiful sandy beaches. Estepona doesn't have as many hills as neighboring Marbella, but the town's architecture is as good as many other towns on the Costa del Sol.
For many years, the main source of income for the people of Estepona was fishing, farming and herding. But after the Andalusian village became a tourist resort over several decades, tourism began to play an important role here. However, even today there are many farms and farms near Estepona.
Estepona offers a large selection of world-famous golf courses, excellent restaurants, apartments and villas for rent.
Shopping
The Costa del Sol offers excellent shopping opportunities, with a number of major shopping areas and specialty stores. You can buy anything here, but the most popular items among tourists are souvenirs, clothing and crafts.
You will find hypermarkets and supermarkets in Marbella and Malaga. Next to them are small local craft shops, fashion boutiques and souvenir shops.
One of the best ways to shop in the center of Marbella is to simply walk the streets. Many noticeable clusters of shops can be easily found close to cafes and restaurants.
Marbella's main street, Avenida Ricardo Soriano, is the main shopping area and home to some of the best shopping and top fashion boutiques in the Costa del Sol.
