Lebedev compact pistol. Lethal weapon "Kalashnikov" - Lebedev pistol
Gun PL-15(Lebedev pistol model 2015) was developed by the design team of the Kalashnikov Concern under the leadership of Dmitry Lebedev, a student of sporting weapons designer Efim Khaidurov. Work on the PL-15 began in 2014 with the participation of multiple Russian champion in practical shooting Andrei Kirisenko. At the International Military-Technical Forum "Army-2017" its shortened version was shown - a pistol PL-15K.

The main buyers of PL-15 pistols should be special forces units, the army and the police. In addition, it is planned to release a sports version for practical shooting. The prototype of the Lebedev Pistol was first publicly demonstrated in June 2015 under the designation PL-14. Its improved version was released in 2016, at the Army-2016 exhibition under the designation PL-15. In 2017, at the Army-2017 forum, the manufacturer presented an updated PL-15 with a different shape of the bolt and bolt stop lever.
One of the most noticeable positive qualities of the PL-15 pistol is the ergonomic shape of the handle with a large angle of inclination, thanks to which users of the pistol were able to make an accurate shot when shooting offhand. This advantage is enjoyed by pistols such as the Parabellum P.08, Ruger Mark IV and Glock 17. In order to reduce the recoil shoulder and throw up when firing, the distance between the butt plate of the handle and the central axis of the barrel bore is made as small as possible. As a result, the shooter spends less time re-aiming after each shot, which increases both accuracy and speed of fire.
Lebedev’s model has a chance to become the first Russian self-loading pistol with a truly ergonomic handle, pleasant in the “grip” and accurate in shooting, not inferior in these qualities to the best examples of the Western space. The PL-15 handle has interchangeable pads of different sizes. This solution, which significantly improves ergonomics, is used by leading manufacturers of short-barreled weapons in the USA and Europe in most of the modern self-loading pistols they produce.
The PL-15 could even try to compete in accuracy with the Swiss SIG P210, famous for its excellent shooting accuracy, and its modern version SIG Sauer P210 Target, if not only for the self-cocking trigger (DAO) and the thick handle due to the double-row magazine. Customers of the PL-15 did not prioritize accuracy, unlike the Swiss, who did not want to reduce accuracy in comparison with the Luger 1906/29 in order to improve other basic properties of the weapon and accepted the Ordonnanzpistole 49, which met their requirements.
The automation works according to the scheme of using the recoil of the moving barrel during its short stroke. The barrel bore is locked by the bolt using a system with the barrel skewed, the coupling of a massive protrusion above the breech of the barrel with a window for ejecting spent cartridges in the bolt. Disengagement of the barrel from the bolt is performed by skewing the breech of the barrel downward when the inclined surface of the tide under the breech of the barrel interacts with the axis of the barrel lock, due to which the massive protrusion above the breech of the barrel disengages with the window for ejecting spent cartridges in the bolt, then the barrel stops, and the shutter continues to move backward.
The safety and slide stop levers, as well as the magazine release button in the PL-15 and PL-15K are double-sided. In the form in which the prototype, designated PL-14, was shown to the public, these levers, in order to reduce the thickness of the weapon, are made almost flat, almost not protruding beyond the side edges of the frame, and are placed in special recesses. The developers equipped the PL-15 with weapon controls of a more traditional shape, albeit not so flat, but more convenient. The pistols, presented at the end of August 2017 at the Army-2017 forum, were equipped with a new shaped bolt stop lever with an enlarged protrusion.
The small thickness of the PL-15 is one of the main features of this pistol. For the 2016 model, the maximum thickness of the handle is 28 mm. But this advantage also has its price - flat safety levers, as practical experience shows, are very difficult to control in a stressful situation, be it a combat situation or a sports competition. There are two interchangeable firing mechanism options. PL-15 - with only a self-cocking (DAO) hammer-type trigger, with a hidden trigger, a trigger force of 4.5 kg and a trigger travel of 7 mm.
PL-15-01 - with a single-action striker trigger (DA), a trigger force of 2.5 kg and a trigger travel of 4 mm. The firing pin is inertial - when the trigger is pulled, the firing pin does not extend beyond the surface of the shutter mirror, and the breaking of the primer is carried out due to the energy of the inertially moving firing pin. The choice in favor of the DAO trigger with not the smallest trigger force was dictated by the designer’s initial desire to make a pistol without a safety catch, but the safety still had to be installed at the request of customers.
Here we recall the situation with the Polish pistol VIS 35 “Radom”, which designer Piotr Vilniewczyc did not want to equip with a manually controlled safety, considering it not only useless, but also harmful, since in a critical situation the owner may simply forget to turn off this safety or forget where exactly it is generally found in weapons. But in the case of the Poles and VIS 35, the customer listened to the opinion of the designer.
A double-sided safety lever, the levers of which are located on both sides of the frame, when turned on, disconnects the hammer and the trigger. The Lebedev pistol is equipped with an indicator of the presence of a cartridge in the chamber, made in the form of a pin protruding from the rear end of the bolt when there is a cartridge in the barrel. The trigger guard is made with a front protrusion for a “grip”, in which the shooter places the index finger of the supporting hand on this protrusion, which, in my personal opinion, does not in any way affect the reduction in the pistol’s toss when firing.
At the bottom of the front of the frame there is a Picatinny rail, with which various tactical flashlights or laser designators can be attached to the weapon. The sights are non-adjustable and installed in dovetail slots. The cartridges are fed from a double-row magazine with the cartridges exiting in one row.
Pistol PL-15K Photo by JSC Kalashnikov Concern
The shortened PL-15K, shown at the Army 2017 forum, approximately corresponds to the dimensions of the Glock 19. The pistol has a frame made of high-strength aluminum alloy with interchangeable grips of various sizes and a seat for installing an under-barrel flashlight and a laser designator. At the bottom of the sides of the handle there are semicircular holes for removing the magazine in difficult operating conditions, when it is necessary to apply force by pulling the magazine by its cover.
The safety levers in the compact PL-15K are moved slightly forward and upward, closer to the bolt stop. At the user's request, the basic barrel can be replaced with an extended one, which has a thread on the muzzle for installing a quick-release muffler. Replaceable front and rear sights can have different configurations according to the user's wishes. It is also possible to install a collimator sight on the bolt.
The exhibition specimen was equipped with a single-action striker trigger with a trigger force of about 1.5 kg and a stroke length of 3 mm. This trigger is optional for the full-size PL-15. The service life of the PL-15 pistol in terms of rounds is at least 10,000 rounds with Russian reinforced 7N21 cartridges, which are superior in power to commercial 9x19 mm Parabellum ammunition and correspond to the more powerful Western 9x19 NATO or 9x19 +P.
When firing 9mm Luger cartridges of normal power, the PL-15's lifespan is about 30,000 rounds. However, it should be mentioned here that the warranty life of Glock pistols is 40,000 shots, and the actual rounds of many copies of these practical Austrian pistols, famous for their reliability, amount to several hundred thousand. The frame is made of light alloy, but in the future it is planned to make it from polymer.
Compared to the PL-14 prototype, the PL-15 demonstrated in 2016 is distinguished by a slightly modified shape of the rear part of the bolt, the presence of a hole at the bottom of the handle for attaching a pistol strap, a new shape of the safety levers, bolt stop, barrel lock and magazine latch. In addition, a version was shown equipped with an extended barrel with threads on its muzzle for attaching a silencer.
In 2017, as already mentioned, the weapon received further changes in the form of a different shape of the bolt stop lever with an increased protrusion and a new shape of the side faces of the bolt, made at a slight angle. The shape of the bolt PL-15 and PL-15K is similar to the Walther PPQ M2 and Steyr pistols.
The Lebedev PL-15 pistol has a number of advantages, including the ergonomics of the handle, the accuracy and accuracy of offhand and rapid fire, small thickness and the absence of levers protruding much beyond the side edges of the weapon, and in addition, only a self-cocking trigger, which allows you to safely carry a weapon with a cartridge in the chamber without the need to use a safety catch.
Among the obvious shortcomings, it should be noted that the safety levers do not protrude beyond the side edges of the frame, which can cause difficulties when handling them, especially with thick gloves, as well as an insufficiently wide trigger guard and an excessively large overall length of the full-size PL-15.

In 2015, at the international forum "Army-2015", the new Russian pistol PL-14 was first presented to the public. The development of this weapon was carried out by specialists from the Kalashnikov concern, and the project was led by Dmitry Lebedev, a student of the famous designer, shooter and trainer Efim Khaidurov. It’s not hard to guess that “PL” stands for “Lebedev pistol,” and the number “14” is the year the weapon’s development began. The pistol uses 9x19mm Parabellum cartridges.
The concept of the new pistol was created jointly by specialists from Russian law enforcement agencies and leading domestic athletes, including Andrei Kirisenko, a famous director and multiple national champion in practical shooting.
The Lebedev PL-14 pistol was developed for the needs of Russian law enforcement agencies: the Ministry of Defense, the police, and other special services. This pistol is also quite suitable for sports shooting enthusiasts. According to the developers, in the future the PL-14 will replace the “eternal” PM, as well as the Yarygin pistol, in which serious problems with ergonomics and service life were identified during operation.
Currently, the Kalashnikov concern is preparing to begin mass production of a new pistol, as stated by the managing director of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant in early March 2019. True, such information looks somewhat strange, since previously there was no data on the pistol successfully passing state or military tests, or on its adoption into service.
Before moving on to a review of this newest pistol, I would like to talk in a little more detail about the history of the creation of the PL-14, as well as the ideas that were originally incorporated into its design.
How and why the Lebedev pistol was created
Back in 1951, the Makarov pistol was adopted for service, which for almost seventy years remained the main personal weapon of first the Soviet and then the Russian officer. Despite its fairly good characteristics, its replacement is long overdue. In 1990, the then USSR Ministry of Defense announced a competition for the creation of a new pistol (R&D “Grach”). However, the collapse of the country seriously delayed the implementation of this project. Only in 2003, the development of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant - a 9 mm Yarygin pistol - was adopted into service by the Russian army. More or less en masse, it began to enter the troops only at the beginning of this decade...
However, Yarygin’s pistol was never able to “take root” in the Russian army. Significant weight, insufficient reliability and short service life are the main complaints about this weapon. The Russian-Italian Swift pistol, which is often called the domestic Glock, was never adopted...
The army needs a simple and reliable pistol, powerful, but at the same time convenient and versatile. Plus, you need a spacious magazine and a good rate of fire.
In 2014, at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant design bureau, a group of designers led by Dmitry Lebedev began developing a new pistol intended for Russian law enforcement agencies.
Even before starting work, the designers formulated several basic criteria that the new weapon must meet:
- high reliability and safety in handling;
- optimal level of ergonomics;
- "two-sidedness";
- significant resource (at least 10 thousand shots).
In 2015, the Lebedev pistol was first presented to the general public. True, at that time the PL-14 was still at the prototype stage. Those few who managed to hold a pistol in their hands unanimously spoke about the excellent ergonomics of the weapon and its very rigid trigger.
The pistol initially received a double-action trigger with a large trigger pull (45N) and a significant hook stroke (7 mm). These were the wishes of the military regarding the safety of using weapons.
At the beginning of 2016, the general director of Kalashnikov announced plans to begin production of the Lebedev pistol in 2017. However, as they say, there was no trial.
Now the concern promises to start producing the pistol this year and is preparing a new production site for this.
Main modifications of the Lebedev pistol
After the first presentation, the PL-14 was redesigned and improved for almost two years, periodically appearing in the news feed. In 2017, Lebedev presented a new modification of his pistol - PL-15 with a single-action trigger mechanism and a significantly lower trigger force - 25N. Its stroke has also become shorter - 4 mm. The back of the pistol was slightly changed, the safety levers received a new shape, and a hole for a strap appeared on the handle.
A compact version of the pistol was also presented - PL-15K with a length of 180 mm and a magazine for 14 rounds. This modification will be produced with two USM options. There is information about modifying the pistol with an extended barrel with threads for installing a silencer. It is likely that some pistols will be produced with a plastic frame, and some with a metal frame.
Previously, Lebedev himself had repeatedly stated that his pistol would become a kind of universal platform, on the basis of which it would be possible to create a whole line of short-barreled weapons. With different barrel lengths, trigger design, magazine capacity - depending on the preferences and wishes of a particular customer.
And this approach seems absolutely correct and justified. Currently, there are no standard universal pistols, because the police have one requirement for weapons, the military has another, and employees of special services or security structures have another.
True, the Kalashnikov concern has still not officially presented the model range of the future pistol, and what modifications they plan to put into production and in what version they will be made is a great mystery.
Review of the design of the Lebedev pistol
The PL-14 automation operates using recoil energy with a short barrel stroke. Its locking occurs due to the coupling of the breech with the window through which the cartridges are extracted. The PL-14 frame is made of aluminum, but in the future they plan to use impact-resistant plastic for its manufacture on other modifications of the weapon.
The pistol safety disconnects the hammer and trigger.
The trigger mechanism of a hammer-type pistol with an inertial striker and a hidden trigger. It is more comfortable to wear because there are fewer protruding parts. The design of the USM PL-14 completely eliminates the possibility of spontaneous firing. The pistol has a system for indicating the presence of a cartridge in the chamber. The slide stop lever, as well as the magazine release button and the safety lock are located on both sides of the weapon.
The pistol is fed from a detachable double-row magazine with fourteen rounds of ammunition. Sights PL-14 open type. On the frame of the weapon there is a Picatinny rail on which additional equipment can be installed.
The developers paid special attention to the ergonomics of the weapon. The shape of the PL-14 handle provides a natural grip on the weapon. Its thickness is only 28 mm, which makes the weapon more convenient for concealed carry. The low location of the barrel axis reduces the pistol's toss after firing, but the weapon does not “sink” in the hand. The double-sided arrangement of the PL-14 controls allows you to fire from both the left and right hands.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Lebedev pistol
The PL-14 has long been the object of active discussion on social networks and on specialized forums for small arms enthusiasts. They managed to literally “take apart the pistol”, describing in detail both its main advantages and main disadvantages. So, let's start with the advantages:
- Modern design and good ergonomics. Almost everyone who has shot from it speaks about the convenience of the weapon;
- Indicator of the presence of a cartridge in the chamber. It can also be called a definite advantage of the PL-14, especially when using weapons in the dark;
- Powerful cartridge, which is especially important for military weapons;
- "Double-sidedness" of the pistol.
However, serious shortcomings were noticed in the design:
- Recessed and “sleek” controls, a small trigger guard and a small bolt holding area put a big question mark on the successful operation of the PL-14 as a military pistol;
- Large sizes. The length of PL-14 is 220 mm. This is a lot, especially for a police weapon. There is a direct analogy with the Stechkin pistol, which, largely due to its size, was supplanted by the less bulky and more comfortable to carry PM;
- A significant mass of weapons. It reaches almost a kilogram;
- Very tight descent. The design of the trigger makes the trigger extremely tight (about 4 kg). This is even more than the famous Nagan, which is considered the “standard” of a heavy trigger. On the one hand, such a design solution increases the safety of the weapon, but, on the other hand, it cannot but affect the shooting accuracy.
Performance characteristics of the PL-14
Below are the main performance characteristics of the pistol:
- Caliber, mm: 9;
- Length, mm: 220;
- Height, mm: 136;
- Thickness, mm: 28;
- Barrel length, mm: 127;
- Weight with loaded magazine, kg: 0.99;
- Magazine capacity - 15 rounds.
The best fight is the one that was not started, and the best weapon is the one that did not have to be used. It was this principle that guided the team of Izhevsk gunsmiths under the leadership of Dmitry Lebedev when developing a new pistol - PL-15 with the index “K”. Reducing characteristics for the sake of wearing comfort and ergonomics - a tribute to fashion or a severe necessity?
History of creation, purpose
The pistol was designed in an extremely short time based on a full-size . First shown at the international arms exhibition "Army 2017". Compared to its older brother, it has reduced dimensions and weight. The entire internal filling - the trigger device and the operating scheme of these pistols are identical.
According to the creators, soldiers of some special units carry firearms only nominally, never using them in action. And here comfort of wearing, compactness and ergonomics come to the fore. This applies to armed guards, some police units and the Ministry of Emergency Situations, for whom, first of all, the new pistol was developed.
Device and technical characteristics
The PL-15K is designed on the basis of the full-size PL 15 and is a classic self-loading pistol. For reloading, the moving barrel is used, which, under the influence of recoil, moves backward along with the bolt. The barrel stroke when fired is short, that is, less than the bolt stroke. It is this automation scheme that allows you to design a pistol with minimal dimensions.
The design of the PL-15K allows the installation of a longer barrel, as well as different front and rear sight options. During the design, special attention was paid to ergonomics and safety. The pistol fits perfectly in the hand, making it easier to return to the sighting path after firing.
The trigger travel is deliberately made large, and the pressing force is 4 kilograms - more than that of analogues. A spontaneous shot is practically impossible, even if it falls on a hard surface from the chest level of a person of average height.
The controls are located on both sides of the pistol. The design provides for the installation of a flashlight, a target designator under the barrel and a shot silencer.
Technical characteristics of PL-15K
- Length: 180 millimeters
- Height: 130 millimeters
- Caliber: 9x19 millimeters
- Magazine capacity: 14 rounds
- Weight of unloaded pistol: 720 g
Advantages and disadvantages of the model
The main advantage of the new pistol can rightfully be called its compactness. If the older PL 15 has several serious competitors in its segment, then the niche that the new product occupies is practically empty. If the compact version of the Lebedev pistol (PL - Lebedev pistol) lives up to expectations, it has every chance of shaking the indisputable authority of the domestic arms industry - the Makarov pistol.
Comparison of pistols PL 15k and PL 15
Despite all the obvious advantages, the model is devoid of serious disadvantages. The deliberately underestimated tactical and technical characteristics are more than compensated for by the ease of wearing and use. And no one would even think of demanding from a compact pistol the characteristics of a high-precision weapon.
"He was a good boy"
These are the words that Dmitry Lebedev, a design engineer at the Izhevsk arms concern Kalashnikov, described the display of his creation at the Army 2017 forum. The pistol performed very well at the exhibition, hinting at its combat potential.
And if you consider that the team of engineers worked on the compact version on a residual basis, devoting most of their efforts to the full-size modification, then it turned out very well. If you still have to use the pistol in real conditions, then rest assured: the PL-15K will definitely not let you down.

Pistol PL-15 developed by designer Dmitry Lebedev, who works at the Kalashnikov concern. Dmitry is a student of the legendary sporting weapons designer Efim Khaidurov, and has been developing experimental pistols for many years.
The development of a pistol under the symbol PL-14 began in 2014. The goal of developing a new pistol is to create a service (combat) pistol for the police, army and special services, as well as variants based on it for practical sports shooting. The new pistol was based on a number of basic concepts, namely: optimal ergonomics, safety in handling, high reliability with any 9x19 cartridges, complete “double-sidedness,” long service life (at least 10,000 rounds when using reinforced armor-piercing 7N21 cartridges). The Lebedev PL-14 pistol was first shown to the public in June 2015; in 2016, its improved version was shown at the Army 2016 exhibition under the designation PL-15. In 2017, at the next Army exhibition, new versions of the pistol were shown - PL-15-01 with a striker-fired USM and a compact version of the PL-15K. At the time of publication (autumn 2017), the development of the Lebedev pistol continues.
The Lebedev PL-15 pistol uses automation using the recoil of the bolt coupled to the barrel, with a short barrel stroke. The reduction of the breech of the barrel when unlocking is carried out by a figured tide under the breech of the barrel. The barrel bore is locked by engaging the protrusion in the upper part of the barrel with the window for ejecting cartridges in the bolt. The pistol frame is made of aluminum alloy; in the future it is planned to use a frame made of impact-resistant polymer. The shape of the weapon's handle provides a comfortable and natural grip on the weapon, while the maximum thickness of the handle is only 28mm.
The trigger mechanism in the basic version is hammer-operated, with a hidden trigger and an inertial firing pin. Shooting is carried out in self-cocking mode for each shot (double-action trigger only), with a trigger force of 4 kg, and the full travel of the trigger is only 7 mm. Additionally, a manual safety has been introduced into the design, which, when turned on, disconnects the trigger from the hammer and has two flat, conveniently located levers on both sides of the weapon. A version of the PL-15-01 pistol has also been developed, which has a single-action striker trigger, with a significantly reduced trigger pull and trigger travel.
The design provides an indicator of the presence of a cartridge in the chamber, made in the form of a pin protruding from the rear end of the bolt when there is a cartridge in the barrel. The slide stop levers are also double-sided, as is the magazine release button. The cartridges are fed from detachable double-row magazines with cartridges exiting in one row. The sights are open, non-adjustable, installed in dovetail-type grooves. The frame under the barrel has a Picatinny-type guide for installing additional equipment (LCC, flashlight). The PL-15 pistol can be equipped with an elongated barrel with a thread for installing a quick-detachable shot silencer.
The Kalashnikov Concern, part of the Rostec State Concern, will launch mass production of the Lebedev pistol (PL-15) in 2019.
“Serial production (of the PL-15 pistol) will be in 2019, that’s absolutely certain. All equipment is on its way,” Alexander Gvozdik told reporters, noting that the pistol will be produced in Izhevsk using new technologies. “The product will meet the consumer properties of the main customer both in the field of military small arms and in the field of civilian small arms,” emphasized the managing director of IMZ. No further details about the start of mass production of Lebedev’s pistol have yet been disclosed.
For the first time, the prototype of Lebedev’s pistol was presented to the general public at the Army-2015 military-technical forum. A modified and improved version of this pistol chambered for the 9x19 mm Parabellum cartridge, popular all over the world, was presented a year later at the Army 2016 forum. And in 2017, at the Army-2017 forum, the PL-15K pistol was presented to the public, which is a compact version of the standard PL-15 developed in an extremely short time. The pistol is equipped with a Picatinny rail for mounting additional tactical devices; the PL-15 magazine is designed for 14 rounds. According to the Kalashnikov concern, the new product has a number of advantages, which include accuracy and accuracy of fire, the small thickness of the pistol and the ergonomics of the handle.
Pistols PL-15K and PL-15 together
A compact version of the pistol, designated PL-15K and based on the full-size model, was introduced last year and is also a classic self-loading pistol. To reload the weapon, a moving barrel is used, which, under the influence of recoil, moves backward along with the bolt. The PL-15K barrel stroke when fired is short, that is, less than the bolt stroke. This automation scheme, chosen by the designers, allowed them to create a pistol with minimal dimensions. The design of the PL-15K pistol allows it to be equipped with a longer barrel, as well as various front and rear sight options. At the same time, the trigger stroke was deliberately made large, and the pressing force is 4 kg - this is more than that of analogues. A spontaneous shot is almost impossible.
The PL-15K version turned out to be even more compact, while retaining the 9x19 mm caliber and 14-round magazine. The length of this version of the pistol is only 180 mm, height – 130 mm. The weight of an unloaded PL-15K pistol is 720 grams. Compactness is called one of the main competitive advantages of the model. If the full-size PL-15, which can also hardly be called a giant, still has several fairly serious competitors in its segment, then the niche claimed by the PL-15K version is almost free of competitors. With the most successful development of circumstances, the compact pistol of Izhevsk gunsmiths will finally be able to supplant the almost eternal Makarov pistol, which enjoys unquestioned authority among domestic gunsmiths and industry, having been in service since 1951.
Compared to its trouble-free, although already very middle-aged competitor, the PL-15K has a number of advantages, which include better ergonomics, accuracy, accuracy and rate of fire, small thickness and the absence of levers protruding too much from the side edges of the weapon. In addition, the model can be equipped with a self-cocking trigger, which allows you to safely carry a pistol with a cartridge in the chamber without the need to use a safety lever. An important fact is the use of more powerful 9x19 mm Parabellum cartridges, including the possibility of using armor-piercing ammunition. Increasing the magazine capacity is also important: the standard box magazine of the PL-15 and PL-15K is designed for 14 rounds, while the PM has only 8 rounds, the difference is almost twofold.
