Number of sunny days per year. The sunniest cities in the world
During the autumn-winter-spring blues, many of us imagine ourselves in warm lands, where the sun shines all year round and the sky is eternally blue. Where are such places?
Contrary to popular belief, such places are not only located on the equator and in Africa, they are on all continents. But before moving on to their review, it should be noted that there are two calculation methods.
The first is by percentage. Scientists have calculated the maximum number of daytime hours when the sun can illuminate a particular area. This figure is 4456 hours per year. Accordingly, subtracting the number of cloudy hours from this figure, we get the exact number of sunny hours. Let's say, if a certain city has clear weather 2228 hours a year, then its percentage of “sunshine” is 50%.
The second method is less accurate; it is measured by the number of days in a year in which it was mostly clear rather than cloudy. The concept is quite vague, as you understand...
Given the existence of two methods, as well as the constantly changing climate, it is not surprising that the sunniest cities in the world are constantly changing places in the ranking. However, the leaders have remained unchanged for many years.
The sunniest cities in Europe
On the European continent, such places are found in Mediterranean countries, namely Spain, Italy and Cyprus, where the sun shines about 320 days a year! The record holders included, of course, the most southern ones, like Nicosia in Cyprus and Malaga in Spain. A the sunniest city in Europe - Italian Foggia(Apulia region).
In all these cities the weather is clear for at least 9 hours a day. Southern Spain, namely Andalusia, is famous for the fact that there is bright sunshine for about 10 months a year, and the weather is warm or hot all year round. The beautiful nature evokes additional delight.
The sunniest countries in Europe also include Greece(Thessaloniki, Athens, Alexandroupolis) and (Haifa, Tel Aviv). Here the number of clear days per year approaches 310.
The Sunniest Cities in America
It is on the American continent that The sunniest city in the world - Yuma, Arizona. This is an official record listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Here there are as many as 325 sunny days a year (or 4050 hours, which is 93%) with temperatures above +32°C, precipitation is extremely rare, and daylight hours are 11 hours.
Along with Yuma, its neighbor, the city, is also considered a clear and very hot city Phoenix, and Las Vegas, in Nevada. The duration of daylight here is more than 10 hours a day, and the climate is very dry.
Of the American continents, one can also distinguish the central part, namely Caribs. For example, in Jamaica the sun shines almost all year round, the weather is always warm and welcoming. The city also stands out from the general background Iztapa, V .
Sunny cities in Africa
Of the African countries, Egypt can boast, especially its south, the city Aswan. It is located near the border with Sudan, daylight here also lasts more than 10 hours, the number of sunny days per year is more than 90 percent. Since the climate in southern Egypt is very dry, vegetation is found only along the Nile River, which contributes to the lack of evaporation and clouds.
Summer temperatures in Aswan fluctuate between 40-50 degrees during the day, and in winter they do not drop below +25. The southern part of Egypt and all of Sudan can be considered one of the driest zones on our planet. The lack of fertile soil, lack of water and year-round heat make these places very difficult to live.
Sunny cities of Asia
The Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East, of course, is also a well-known sunny place on the planet. And Saudi Arabia They can boast that they have clear skies for almost the whole year, with the exception of a couple of days.
The Far East, namely, is proud of the fact that the sun shines brightly for more than 300 days a year, and the weather is almost always hot or warm. This exotic corner of the planet, with its beaches and blue sky, forever wins the hearts of tourists who dream of living, or at least relaxing, not in a hot desert, but in a sunny country with beautiful green nature.
Near Indonesia you can bask in the sun in Singapore. This amazing eastern country with modern technologies and rapidly growing progress attracts a huge number of tourists who are crazy about the weather. There is no need to worry about prolonged downpours or cloudy skies; Singapore is another country of eternal summer.
Australia, a continent that is 75 percent desert, does not boast as many hot and sunny days as its African desert brothers, as it receives high amounts of rainfall. However, there is also plenty of sun in this side of the world.
The cloudiest cities in the world
There are other places on the planet where the sun is a rare guest. Cloudy and rainy cities are also found on all continents. London or Saint Petersburg It’s almost always cloudy, you won’t get good weather here, but it can be worse.
The Colombian city of Buenaventura is recognized as the rainiest city in the world. It rains almost constantly there. Residents are accustomed to constant water around and, at best, partly cloudy weather. Cloudy skies are almost always observed by residents of the tropics, many oceanic islands and countries such as Liberia, Samoa, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea. Residents of these countries, and especially some cities, not only do not see the sun, but also suffer from constant floods.
Of course, there are very few clear hours in the Nordic countries. Even if in the far north there is a Polar Day, which can last for months, this is of little use, since the weather is very cold.
Those who really love good weather and are tired of waiting for their summer, definitely need to arrange a holiday for themselves in the form of a trip to a sunny and warm country, where you can forget about the rains, clouds and gray depression. And, as it turned out, there are a lot of such places on our planet.
On December 17, a historical weather record was set in Moscow. The air temperature rose to 8 degrees Celsius. This has not happened in 138 years of observation. However, warm April weather is accompanied by rain and gray skies. Many have become complain Due to the constant grayness overhead, the opinion arose that Moscow had become similar to St. Petersburg, famous for rainy weather. The Village did its own research to understand whether the weather in the capital has really become worse than in St. Petersburg.
Sun: 1:0
Over the past seven years, Moscow and St. Petersburg have had almost the same number of sunny days. According to the Yandex.Weather service, each year in both capitals there are an average of 60 of them. At the same time, there are usually even more rainy days in Moscow than in St. Petersburg - 40 versus 36. The remaining days are a gray zone, that is, they are simply cloudy.
In 2017, the sun appeared more often in Moscow. Based on the archive of cloud observations, we counted days with clear and almost clear weather, which the townspeople saw from nine in the morning to 18 in the evening. In Moscow, since the beginning of 2017, there have been 55 such days, and in St. Petersburg - 45. Moscow August leads the way - 13 sunny days.
Since the beginning of 2017, there have been 55 sunny days in Moscow, 45 in St. Petersburg
Precipitation: 0:1
Rain, snow and hail covered the residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg for almost 150 days, that is, half a year - a draw. But as for the volume of precipitation, there was 80 millimeters more in Moscow - which we would call a defeat for the capital. Interestingly, Moscow became rainier than St. Petersburg due to one day - June 30, when the capital received more than 70% of the monthly precipitation norm.
A sign of last summer - warnings from the Ministry of Emergency Situations about bad weather. At the end of May, rescuers were not notified of the storm in a timely manner. Then in Moscow, 16 people died due to the consequences of strong gusts of wind.
After this, the Moscow department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations intensified its work: this year the department issued emergency alerts about worsening weather 130 times. Petersburg - 166 times. In addition to storm winds, rescuers warn about fog, ice, low and high temperatures. In St. Petersburg, information about the high water level in the Neva is added to this.
According to Rosstat, prices for umbrellas in Moscow increased by 10%. In St. Petersburg - by 5%
Temperature: 1:0
It is curious that the cold Moscow summer was warmer than in St. Petersburg. But the closer we got to winter, the higher the daytime temperature in St. Petersburg became than in Moscow. And this is also a completely normal situation. January in Moscow was much colder: the average daily temperature was minus 7.6 degrees versus minus 3.9 degrees in St. Petersburg.
In total, on average since the beginning of the year, days in St. Petersburg have been 0.5 degrees colder than in Moscow - 7.4 degrees. If we take into account the night temperature, then in Moscow it is only 0.1 degrees warmer. In the capital, the lowest temperature was recorded on January 7 - minus 29.9 degrees, the hottest day was July 29 - 31.5 degrees. In St. Petersburg, the amplitude is smaller: the lowest temperature was also on January 7 - minus 20.6 degrees, the highest was on August 19 - 27.2 degrees. It amounted to 2.3%. The umbrellas exceeded it.
To summarize, we can say that Muscovites were lucky to see a little more sunny days in 2017. But you were unlucky to plunge into thunderous water floods.
Russia is unique in that, thanks to its vast territory, it finds itself in four climatic zones at once. It is clear that the climate is very different in different parts of the country. In its cities, the number of sunny days varies greatly, and when looking for the sunniest city in Russia, it is not necessary to look only at the hottest of them, because even in cold weather the sun often shines in some of them. Roshydromet presented the sunniest cities in Russia.
1. Ulan-Ude (2797 hours of sunshine per year)
The rating was topped by Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryatia. According to statistics, in this city the sun shines 2797 hours a year, which, by the way, is 116.5 days, that is, one third of the year. And that's a lot! Despite such high rates, the city’s climate is moderate, sharply continental and arid. The winter period lasts 5 months, but is characterized by weak winds and a large number of sunny days.
2. Khabarovsk (2449 hours)
This Far Eastern city has repeatedly taken first place in the list of the sunniest cities in Russia, because the sun shines here about 300 days a year without any atmospheric interference. Therefore, local residents joke that the most popular product in Khabarovsk is sunglasses. It is no coincidence that Khabarovsk was included on the five thousandth banknote, because it ranks second after Krasnodar in the ranking of the most favorable cities for entrepreneurship. From here it is very close to the now economically powerful China - you can take a river tram, cross the Amur and in 1.5 hours find yourself on Chinese territory.
The climate in Khabarovsk is moderate monsoon, winters are quite cold, and summers are humid and warm. But this is not an obstacle to the sun, which shines here much more often than in most Russian cities. Thus, Khabarovsk residents are about 3 times more likely to squint in the sun than Muscovites or residents of St. Petersburg. And this happens because from November to March, a stable Siberian anticyclone dominates in these places, which establishes clear, sunny, frosty weather.
When scientists estimate the age of cities, they rely on the earliest mentions of them in chronicles or annals. However, archaeological excavations often...
3. Astrakhan (2410 hours)
This southern outpost of Russia is often called the “Caspian capital” and is sometimes compared to the Italian Venice. It is included in the list of 115 cities that are considered the most significant in the history of Russia. Astrakhan is located at the very beginning of the Volga delta, it is scattered across 11 of its islands in the Caspian lowland region. This is one of the warmest cities in the country. The average annual temperature here is +11 degrees.
The climate in Astrakhan is temperate continental, turning into a more arid semi-desert. Astrakhan is the largest city in Europe with an arid climate. Even in winter here, if a little snow falls, it melts instantly. The reason for the dry summers and fairly warm winters is the local wind pattern, which mainly blows from the east. The occurrence of strong winds means the onset of spring; they very quickly dry out the already dry soil, so early spring winds raise a large amount of dust. At the same time, summer in Astrakhan is very hot and dry. By autumn, the climate softens somewhat, the air becomes warm, but remains just as dry.
4. Nakhodka (2368 hours)
This city is located on the very edge of Russia, in the Primorsky Territory, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. This is the southernmost city in the east of the country, which is located south of both Vladivostok and Sochi. The climate here is temperate, with average winter air temperatures of -8-10 degrees and summer temperatures of +19-21 degrees; the water warms up almost the same in summer (+18-20 degrees). Only in rare cases can there be severe frosts in winter, although it may also rain. Summer usually begins with fogs. The best time to relax on local beaches is in July-September. In August, typhoons that originate in the tropics (Carolina and Mariana Islands) often reach Nakhodka, then a month's worth of precipitation pours on the city in 1-2 days.
5. Yakutsk (2229 hours)
This city is the largest located on permafrost. Yakutia has a sharply continental, very harsh climate with record temperature changes. The summer heat here gives way to incredibly severe winter frosts. Here, even spit can turn into ice during flight. Yakutsk has very little air humidity, however, fogs are a common occurrence here. In summer you can see white nights, but in winter the sun barely rises above the horizon. But, despite all this, in general Yakutsk is a very sunny city. Nearby, in Oymyakon, there is a pole of cold. It is almost impossible for people born and living in the south to adapt to life in Yakutsk, although in the summer here no one will be surprised by the 40-degree heat.
6. Omsk (2223 hours)
In the 60s, Omsk was recognized as the greenest city of the USSR, and now it is considered one of the sunniest cities in Russia, because there are over 223 sunny days a year, and in some years, according to weather forecasters, there are even more than 300. According to this indicator, it is not inferior to Sochi, Senegal, Monaco, Cyprus and western Andalusia. And the average daylight hours here are longer (17.2 hours) than in Crimea (15.5 hours). The city stands at the confluence of the Om River and the Irtysh. Omsk has a temperate climate with humid and warm summers and fairly cold winters. There are no fewer sunny days in Omsk than in the famous Yalta.
The largest number of cloudy days here occurs in the winter, although in 2016 there were only 42 of them, and on the remaining winter days the sun shone for Omsk residents. Interestingly, more than 50 streets are named after Omsk in different countries of the world, so it is famous in its own way.
7. Troitsk (2218 hours)
In 2012, this Ural city was awarded the title of “the sunniest place in Russia”, since that year the sun shone for the townspeople for as much as 2,218 hours. However, our ancestors also knew that the sun was always plentiful here, apparently, which is why, since 1750, they decided to organize large annual fairs here. This fair lasts from May to October.
Local residents appreciate such an attractive property of their hometown, so before entering it they installed an inscription welcoming guests to the sunny city. By the way, it is also important for travelers that they can come here not only for the sun, but also for educational purposes, because in this ancient merchant city dozens of cultural monuments, painted merchant houses, the Church of the Holy Trinity and other temples have been preserved.
According to a sociological survey, Muscovites perceive their city as a place where they can realize their spiritual, financial, business and cultural...
8. Sochi (2177 hours)
Finally, the turn came to the warmest Russian city, located on the shores of the Black Sea in the Krasnodar Territory. In the North Caucasus, the climate is known to be subtropical. The urban agglomeration of Sochi covers an area of more than 3,500 square meters. km, while it is very elongated along the coast, occupying 145 km of coastline. The city even borders the Main Caucasus Range. The location and terrain features provide the city with unique climatic conditions. The proximity of high mountains adds mountain elements to the subtropical climate. In summer this city is very humid and hot - a real bathhouse.
It is curious that since the city is very extended, the climate in different parts of it is not the same. For example, Adler is considered the coolest place here, Khost is the hottest, and the most sunlight falls on the central region of Sochi.
9. Vladivostok (269 sunny days per year)
Vladivostok also boasts an abundance of sunny days. It traditionally has a long spring, sunny but at the same time humid summer and mild, warm autumn. The climate of Vladivostok is temperate monsoon; it is unique in that it contains features of a temperate and subtropical climate. Therefore, at different times of the year it shows itself completely differently.
There is a clearly seasonal change in contrasting air masses here. Vladivostok is not only the most important port of the country, but also a tourist city. Vacationers come here at any time of the year to enjoy the mild coastal climate. On average, 269 days a year are sunny in this city.
10. Krasnodar (220 sunny days per year)
Of course, the Russian ranking of the sunniest cities would look dubious if Krasnodar, one of the largest cities in the North Caucasus, were not included in it. The sun here is hidden from view for most of its stay in the sky, winter is usually short and mild, and easterly winds often bring abnormal heat. The location of the city provided it with long, hot summers and very moderate winters. Here droughts occur more often than rains - usually short-lived.
It is clear that with such a climate there are more than enough sunny days in Krasnodar, and the sunniest are June and August (on average 29 days each). Therefore, it’s great to come to Krasnodar in the summer and make forays from here to interesting places in the Krasnodar region. In winter, only about 10 days per month are sunny, and in just a year there are 220 fine, clear days. It is known that the Krasnodar region is represented by numerous resorts, so sunglasses, hats and swimsuits are the most popular goods here. How pleasant it is to approach a singing fountain in the summer heat, near which couples in love seek to find pleasant coolness.
