Forewarned means forearmed or says the Hydrometeorological Center!
Despite the march of progress, scientists still find it difficult to make accurate predictions in the long term. However, they have a lot of ways to track average weather data based on location and taking into account global climate changes. This is important, since the territory of Russia is huge, and all residents of the state, without exception, strive to prepare for winter.
To prevent the vagaries of nature from taking you by surprise, the Hydrometeorological Center employees create weather reports - models that are based on mathematical principles and embedded in special computer programs. Artificial intelligence processes and summarizes information provided by experts for an entire century, including in its calculations:
- Atmosphere pressure;
- air temperature and humidity;
- wind speed and cloudiness;
- probability and saturation of precipitation.
These are just the basic parameters. In fact, there is much more data and scientists have to do a huge amount of work.
Information from the Hydrometeorological Center suggests that winter in Russia will not be too severe, but rather average. Some instability is expected in the eastern part of the country due to general climate changes, but no cataclysms are expected in the Central region.
Winter forecast for residents of the most populous region of Russia
To describe the weather throughout the Russian Federation, you will need to compile an opus appropriate to the size of the state. It is much easier to identify landmarks that are characteristic of the middle zone. According to meteorologists, events will develop as follows:
- Winter will come early - snowfalls are expected in November 2017
- Heavy precipitation will continue in the first ten days of December, but a thaw will come by the middle of the month.
- On New Year's Eve the temperature will drop again and will delight you with snow-covered landscapes
- January 2018 will be frosty and windy
- The cold will subside only by the end of February
The main characteristic feature of the winter 2017-2018 in the central part of Russia will be mild temperature transitions and the absence of sharp jumps in atmospheric pressure.
When will it get cold in Moscow?
The capital of Russia will greet winter with the first November snow. Here, thermometers will not record sudden changes in temperature (fluctuations around -5 – 10 Celsius with frequent drops), and strong winds will get entangled among skyscrapers and will not be as piercing as outside the city.
Scientists state that megacities are characterized by a special microclimate and Moscow is no exception. The abundance of heated buildings affects temperature fluctuations and leads to thaws in the company of dampness and slush. Residents of Belokamennaya should stock up on shoe dryers and prepare for icy conditions.
Winter season in St. Petersburg
Northern Palmyra demonstrates strict adherence to the weather course taken in previous years. Thermometer readings will traditionally reach -7 °C during the day and slightly lower on the scale at night. The “democratic” temperature indicator does not exclude chilly weather. The cold will be brought by gusty winds and high humidity typical of the surrounding area.
Those who are going to visit St. Petersburg in the winter of 2017-2018 will have to take warm clothes with them, including waterproof shoes, because the local -5 degrees will give a head start to -20, which is rare for the middle zone. Only such equipment will save you from the peculiar climate of the most beautiful city in the world and will allow you to withstand its vagaries: wet snow, moisture and blizzards.
What will the weather be like in the Urals?
Bitter Ural frosts will envelop the earth at the end of autumn. November temperatures will plummet and bring frequent snowfalls. By the beginning of December, the area will be covered with impressive snowdrifts, and in the middle of the month the temperature will drop to -20 degrees Celsius, but the weather will remain clear and windless.
Having come into its own, winter will bring even more cold, and the thermometers will drop to minus 25. Later, the mistress of the frost will calm down and the weather will be ideal for winter sports. January will add more snow and bring winds. It is recommended to prepare for due challenges this month. February will be raging with frosts, but they will be quite familiar to residents of the region.
Winter 2017-2018: forecast by month

January 2018 | The New Year's decade will pass without strong winds and precipitation. By Epiphany there will be frosts that will last for several days, and after that the thermometer will indicate severe frosts | from -5 – 9 0 C at the beginning of the month to -20 – 25 0 C towards the end |
February 2018 | The last month of the season will be the most capricious with rapid temperature changes and dramatic weather changes. | from -9 – 13 0 C and below |
Weather is one of the most popular topics of conversation in any society, because we always wonder what tomorrow will bring us, what to wear and whether to take an umbrella with us. However, it is much more interesting to find out what the winter of 2018 will be like in Russia, whether it will bring a lot of snow, will it be frosty, or, given global warming, will we expect warm days and minimal precipitation.
Of course, even modern weather stations will not be able to predict with one hundred percent accuracy what the coming winter will be like. However, based on statistics from past years and taking into account climate change, some meteorologists are already coming forward with stories about what to expect in December-February. Ordinary people also make judgments about what the period from late autumn to early spring will be like, relying on folk superstitions.
In general, experts say that the upcoming cold season of the year will not bring any surprises, the weather will be quite familiar and predictable. Despite this, it is necessary to prepare for it in advance, since the first frosts and snowfalls in the central part of Russia are expected in mid-November. In northern latitudes, naturally, even earlier - at the end of September-October.
December 2017
The cold season will begin with comfortable temperatures. In the central part of Russia, the thermometer in the daytime will show -5...-9 degrees. Approximately the same values can be seen at the end of the month. In the northern regions of the country, temperatures will be lower, with frosts down to -30 degrees possible in some places. In the south, on the contrary, in December the thermometer is unlikely to drop below -6 degrees at night. Warming will begin in mid-December.
In Moscow, the minimum temperature is expected after Catholic Christmas. In the daytime it will be up to -8, at night – up to -14. In the northern capital the picture is similar. As for the amount of precipitation, exceeding normal limits is not expected.
About the weather for the New Year
In addition, many people are also concerned about another question: what the weather will be like on New Year’s Eve, because the celebration program, costumes and, often, mood depend on this. This year, nature promises to give a gift - snow will fall in most regions of the Russian Federation. In the central part of Russia, the thermometer will not drop below -10 degrees. In the southern regions it is expected to reach -5. Well, northerners will have to freeze, since the temperature will be within -20...-25 degrees.
In Moscow, on December 31 and January 1, you should expect up to -3 degrees during the day and up to -7 degrees at night. It will be a little colder in St. Petersburg, but overall the temperature will be quite comfortable. Well, on subsequent holidays there may be a slight decrease.
When you go outside at midnight on December 31st, look at the sky. If it is strewn with stars, then this means a rich harvest in the summer.
January 2018
You can safely plan walks and outdoor recreation, since weather forecasters are confident that in the first ten days of the month the average daily temperature will not be lower than -8 degrees (central part of the Russian Federation). Residents of the southern regions will be even luckier; temperatures there are expected to reach zero. Well, northerners, accustomed to frost, will not be able to change their thick fur coats to thin down jackets, because it will be down to -30.
By mid-January, Russians will feel real Epiphany frosts; even in the central region, thermometers will show down to -25 during the day. At the same time, snowfall will occur in most of Russia.
By the end of the month, many may think that winter is losing ground, as a short thaw will set in. However, be careful, the heat will bring with it an increase in viral and infectious diseases.
February 2018
Many people are looking forward to February because they hope it will be warmer and less snowy than December and January. However, it is the last month of the cold season that is considered one of the harshest months, and in 2018 it will be the same. Sudden temperature changes, heavy precipitation, and gusty winds are expected.
At the beginning of the month, residents of central Russia will have to contend with frosts of up to 30 degrees. Northerners can expect lower temperatures. By the middle of the month, warming is planned - up to -10 (in the central region), and in the south - up to +10. Well, the end of the month will bring with it truly spring weather. In the north it is warm - up to -5, in the central part - up to +3, and in the south - up to +15 degrees. The amount of precipitation in some areas will exceed norms.
In Moscow and the northern capital the weather will be usual for this time.
Folk signs
Today, the forecast is made based on the results of measurements of various meteorological equipment. But we cannot ignore folk signs, with the help of which for hundreds of years they have been determining what December-February will be like.
Of course, the modern climate is different from the one in which our grandmothers and great-grandmothers lived, however, some signs do not lose their relevance:
- Watch the weather in September. It is believed that the warm and dry first month of autumn promises a late arrival of the frost season.
- If it rained often in June-August, and in September-November, on the contrary, it was warm and dry, then the cold will come late, but spring will not be in a particular hurry.
- When you see a rowan tree, estimate the number of fruits. So, a rich harvest promises a frosty and long winter.
- You can also predict what the period from late autumn to early spring will be like based on the autumn harvest. Thin and tender skins on vegetables (carrots, potatoes, onions) promise warm December, January and February. But if the peel is thick and rough, then prepare fur coats and warm shoes, since the winter will be cold and long. By the way, this is also indicated by a rich harvest of mushrooms and an abundance of acorns in the fall.
- Have you seen titmice? Get ready for the cold. These birds are sure harbingers of frosty days.
- Finding mosquitoes in late autumn means frost.
- Remember the date when the first snow fell. It is believed that real winter will come in exactly 40 days. Moreover, if the trees have not had time to shed all their leaves, but are already covered with snow, it will be fierce.
- Late leaf fall is a harbinger of a harsh and long winter.
- December 1 is the Day of Plato and Roman, what will this day be like, expect such a winter.
- If it snowed on December 12, then the snowfalls will not stop throughout the week.
Some meteorologists believe that you should not predict the weather by signs, since all kinds of superstitions are nothing more than a reason to laugh.
Some interesting winter facts
- Oymyakon is rightfully considered the coldest Russian city. The minimum temperature that was recorded here is -71.2. This happened in 1938. There was even a monument erected for this occasion. On average, in the cold season the thermometer shows -55, and the average annual temperature does not rise above -15.5.
- The capital's record low temperature was recorded in 1940. The temperature dropped to minus 42. The severe frosts lasted almost three months. Serious damage was caused to agriculture (trees froze), and pipes burst in Moscow apartments. The work of many businesses was suspended as city residents suffered frostbite while getting to work or home.
- Muscovites also remember the winter of 2011, with its freezing rain. The storm raged for two days, and then sub-zero temperatures (about -25) led to icing and the subsequent collapse of trees and power lines.
- The warmest winter in Moscow, according to Roshydromedcenter, was in 2015. At this time, in the North-West of the country, Siberia and the Far East, the average temperature remained at -4-7 degrees, which became a record for the Russian Federation. And on the Black Sea coast in February the mercury approached +20.
- The diameter of the largest snowflake in Russia, which was not only seen, but also measured, was 12 centimeters. It happened on April 30, 1944 in Moscow. But the absolute record holder is still a snowflake discovered more than 130 years ago (01/28/1887) in the USA. Its diameter is 38 cm and thickness is 20 cm.
- More than 50% of the world's population (approximately 4 billion) have never (!) seen real snow.
- One day it snowed even in the Sahara. You could see this event on February 18, 1979.
- In 1911, frosts in the United States were so severe that even Niagara Falls could not resist and froze.
- The warmest winter, of course, is on the equator, but Australia (in the southern part) and some African countries (in the northern part of the globe) are not far behind.
- Kionophobia is the name given to the fear of snow and cold.
Of course, each of us can try to predict what the coming winter will be like. Nevertheless, we would like to remind you that neither modern equipment, nor long-term observations of the climate, much less folk signs and superstitions are able to accurately tell what the weather will be like. This can only be known on the eve of the calendar onset of the cold season. We can only hope that he will be generous on warm days!
Video: how to determine the weather in winter using folk signs
Winter is the most wonderful time. It is in winter that you can enjoy the soft snow, plunge into the fragrant smell of freshness, and rejoice at the arrival of the long-awaited New Year holidays. Winter is not only warm fur coats and huge snowdrifts, it is fun tubing or skating, skiing or snowboarding. Only in the winter season can you enthusiastically enjoy winter sports and enjoy the daily fluffy snowflakes falling on your nose and cheeks. And when will winter 2019 come? When will it be possible to enjoy all the splendor of the frosty season?
According to calendar events, the starting day of the winter period falls on December 1. But, as a rule, by this time winter has already fully exercised its power. In December the weather becomes truly frosty; this month there are no exceptions for severe frosts, which, of course, only brighten up the winter season.
And yet, when will winter be in Russia in 2019? In what month will this fluffy and wonderful season come to Russians?
When will winter come 2019
According to Christian customs, the beginning of the magnificent winter season falls on a festive date - the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Orthodox Christians celebrate this holiday on the 14th of October. According to folk wisdom, it is said that during this period the first crust of snow should cover the ground. And, as you know, fluffy snow is a clear sign of the frosty season.
But in these years, the first snow rarely falls on Pokrov. Statistics prove that at the indicated time in October the weather is still moderately warm, so it is still too early to talk about the coming of winter.
As for precipitation in the form of snow, the first snowflakes are planned for the month of November. It is November that can be considered the opening of the cold season. Forecasters assure that when winter 2019 arrives, at this moment subzero temperatures will appear on the thermometer. According to preliminary data, it has been revealed that the final month of autumn will become frosty and snowy. If at the beginning of the month the thermometer on the street shows zero marks, then by the middle of the same month the daytime ambient temperature will become sharply below zero. As for the night hours, already on the initial dates the air temperature at night will reach minus 5 degrees below zero.
In connection with such circumstances, we can confidently say that the winter period will boldly declare its rights from mid-November. But even at this moment autumn does not want to leave nature, so even before the last days of the month a severe struggle between the imperious winter and the tireless autumn is possible.
But on the first calendar day of the winter period, that is, the 1st day of December, the cold period of the year is already open and will fully come into its legal rights. The month of December will be a real herald of frosty blizzards and sub-zero temperatures.
An accurate forecast for 2019, when winter will come to Russia, can be given based on folk signs about the cold season.
- If the month of September is dry and warm, then you should not expect early frosts.
- A huge harvest of red rowan indicates the arrival of a frosty and early winter.
- The later the leaves fall from the trees, the later the cold weather can be expected in nature.
- The late departure of the cranes indicates the fact that frosts will not come to nature any time soon.
- If ants build large anthills in the fall, then the sign indicates the arrival of severe frosts, which will last almost the entire winter period.
- The titmice, which begin to fly close to apartments and houses, carry imminent frosts on their tails.
- If in summer there is a rich harvest of mushrooms, then winter will drag on for a long time and become quite frosty, but not early.
Every person who cares about the future certainly asks himself what the winter of 2017-2018 in Russia will be like in order to know what exactly to prepare for in the coming period. Winter 2017-2018: general forecast from weather forecasters
Modern society is closely connected with progress and new developments in the field of science and technology, but still the current understanding of all these processes does not allow scientists how far to predict weather behavior. Therefore, it is worth understanding that each statement describing the natural mood for the winter of 2017-2018 is only preliminary, although very probable.
Meteorologists suggest that the coming winter of 2017-2018 in Russia will be very traditional and in most regions of our country will not differ from the previous ones. Winter 2017-2018 will be the coldest in the last 100 years - alternative meteorologist forecast
The famous meteorologist in Europe, James Madden, made a very bleak forecast: “October can be considered the last “warm” month, because it is followed by a very sharp change in weather: heavy showers, snowfalls, prickly strong winds, low temperatures. Buy warm clothes now and insulate your home if possible. The winter will be long...”
Domestic experts agree with their colleague. They said that the winter would indeed be longer than ever before. Winter will be early and with severe frosts. The cold is associated with an anomaly in the Pacific Ocean. There, the water temperature has sharply increased by one degree, this will bring with it strong polar cold and air masses for Europe. Based on this, we can conclude that a temperature of minus 25-30 degrees will be “fully operational.” The beginning of winter can be expected already in early November, and the end only at the beginning of April.
Meteorologists have announced a dire forecast for the coming winter. According to them, the world will plunge into a new ice age. Britain will suffer the most. The Thames will most likely freeze there.
This serious weather problem is something that is unlikely to change overnight, because re-analyses of previous cycles and other factors that influence solar activity and sunspot frequency tell us quite convincingly that we are heading towards something similar to the Maunder minimum,” said James Madden.
AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said "surface sea water temperatures will likely have a major impact on nearby land temperatures."
The climate in the region, including London, Amsterdam, Paris and Lisbon, may change significantly, the temperature background will become several degrees cooler against the backdrop of warming around the world, Alex concluded.
The coming winter will be the coldest in the last hundred years, not only here, but throughout the entire globe! Some states are already preparing in full for a new harsh climate.
Anomalous phenomena in 2018
In 2018, the number of dangerous meteorological phenomena will increase in Russia, Aleksey Kokorin, head of the climate program of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia, told reporters. According to him, the changes will not develop into catastrophic situations, but the damage will be great.
“The intensity of anomalous phenomena is increasing - this is a fact, and this will continue. We must be prepared for this,” Kokorin warns. The climatologist believes that the total number of hydrometeorological events in Russia will remain approximately at the same level: 550-600.
“Statistics on dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena count cases that caused serious damage. It greatly depends on when the phenomenon happened - at night or during the day, whether we were able to prepare for the danger or not,” the expert explained.
In addition, Kokorin also warned that the weather in 2018 will again be unstable: abnormal cold will be replaced by abnormal heat.
