Powerful sword of a Chinese officer
During an encounter with ghouls, there is a chance to meet the legendary wild ghoul-devourer, who is armed with a powerful sword of a Chinese officer.
In old China, there were a huge number of varieties of cold, single-edged cutting weapons under the general name “dao”. It is known that the main types of Tao were divided into three large groups:
- a) long-shafted dao - guandao 关刀 (yanyuedao 偃月刀), xiangbidao 象鼻刀, pudao 朴刀
and shuangshoudai 双手带; - b) two-handed dao - dadao 大刀 (kandao 砍刀), zhanmadao 斩马刀 and changdao 长刀;
Historically, in the meihua mantis fighting system (meihua tanglanmen), three varieties of dao from the first and second groups were used: guandao, shuangshoudai and nuweidao. In this article we will analyze in detail only the last group, that is, the group of belt dao.
According to numerous historical materials and archaeological research, in ancient China, before the Mongol conquest of the 13th century, only one type of belt dao was widely used, under the general name “straight-back swords” (zhibeidao) or “swords with an iron ring” (tehuandao). It was a single-edged straight sword with a slight curve closer to the tip and a ring on the handle. Zhibeidao in appearance differed little from the double-edged jian sword, popular in those days.

However, starting from the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368), under the powerful influence of Mongol military achievements, manufacturing technologies and techniques for using the sword, four categories of single-edged swords began to prevail in China under the general name peidao (佩刀, a belt sword with a cross-shaped or disc-shaped guard ). Peidao were always worn on a special suspension (tilyanggu) made of braided cord with a special bracket attached to the belt on the left side.

According to the early military tradition, first borrowed by the Mongols from the nomadic, mainly Alan-Bulgarian and Turkic tribes living in the Altai, Tuva and Ural region, and then developed by the Manchus, the peidao was worn with the blade down, and with the hilt of the sword pointing backwards. This was done in order not to interfere with the bow, which was tied to the left in the beam. In order to grab the peidao from its sheath, the warrior used his left hand to knock the sheath back and up, thus turning the sword over with the blade up and the hilt forward, ideally at the same time drawing the sword and delivering a cutting blow to the enemy. This could be easily done both at a gallop and on foot.
Manchu officers and generals of the 18th and 19th centuries, methods of drawing and carrying a sword.The second version of snatching peidao was used already in non-war times, knocking the sheath back behind the back and snatching the sword from the right from behind the back, but with the blade down.
There was also a third version of drawing with the blade down, in which, simultaneously with the opposite movement of the sheath to the left and back, the sword was taken out of the sheath, and the sheath itself was removed from the belt, allowing fencing with both the sword and the sheath, potentially increasing the technical superiority of the warrior.
During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Chinese almost completely switched to using the round guard of Japanese origin, popular at that time, in combination with traditional, already Sino-Mongolian blades and handles. Thus, the first category of belt single-edged swords was formed under the general name “goose feather swords” (yanmaodao). The shape of the blade was straight with a gradual bend only in the last third closer to the tip, which made it possible, in addition to standard chopping and cutting movements, to successfully use this sword as a piercing weapon. In this regard, the handle was also used straight. A square or round pommel was placed on the end of the handle. Due to many historical and social reasons, by the end of the 13th century this type of sword had almost completely lost its popularity among military men and martial artists. The exception was certain schools, where it continued to be used until our time.
“Quill Feather Sword” (Yanmaodao), author’s collection.Towards the end of the Ming Dynasty and under the influence of the Japanese tachi and odachi swords, a second category of peidao appeared, which included two new types of blade. The first was called “swords of the Qi family” (qijiadao), and the second “willow leaf swords” (luedao), this category also included “short swords” (duandao). “Swords of the Qi family” were a somewhat shortened version of the so-called “horse-cutting swords” (zhanmadao), which belonged to long-shafted single-edged swords, as well as long-bladed swords and subsequently influenced the development of one of the authorized types of long-shafted swords of the Qing army - shuangshoudai. “Horse trimming swords”, known since the beginning of the Song Dynasty, were widely used in numerous battles and battles, mainly with the sole purpose of cutting off the legs of a galloping horse.

Subsequently, the great Ming general Qi Jiguang (1528-1588), inspired by the efficiency, practicality, and of course the aesthetic beauty of Japanese blades, which were used by his sworn enemies - the Japanese pirates “wokou”, took over
based on Japanese tachi (the Chinese disparagingly called them “swords of the Lilliputians” watero) and crossed it with zhanmadao, creating the so-called “Sword of the Qi Family” (qijadao).
It should be noted that both variants of “vodao” and “qijiadao” were very popular in the coastal regions of Ming China.
“Sword of the Qi Family” (qijiadao), author’s collection.The second type of the second category of peidao, under the general name “willow leaf sword” (luedao), was distinguished by curved hilts and a rather narrow blade that smoothly curved towards the tip along the entire length of the blade, which was an almost ideal shape for the widespread use of chopping and cutting techniques on horseback and on foot. . It is known that the warlike Manchus preferred just such luedao swords.

Liuedao were used very successfully by the eight-banner troops both against the Chinese themselves and against their neighbors. It is not surprising that this type of belt sword became the standard in the imperial army of the Qing dynasty (1644–1912).
The third category of peidao was called “cutting swords” (piandao) and was distinguished by a much more accentuated curve of the blade, in order to further increase the cutting power of this sword in close combat. It should be noted that these swords were used quite rarely.

The fourth category included “cow tail swords” (nuweidao). These peidao developed on the basis of folk wide-bladed swords and are a modification of the “willow leaf” sword by gradually and uniformly thickening the width of the blade towards the tip, where the last third of the blade is shaped like a cow’s tail tassel and its upper part, called elman, as well as the blade, is sharp sharpened.
The peidao sword used in the fencing section of the meihua mantis fighting system is self-named “lanmendao” 拦门刀, which means “gate-blocking sword.” This name comes from the classical lanmendao form of the same name, which is the quintessential fencing techniques of the meihua mantis fighting system. The standard length of the entire sword is “san chi san” (three chi and three cun) or 101 cm, the blade is 79-80 cm. Lanmendao swords were forged from the so-called multi-layer pseudo-Damascus steel “huawengang”, and the scabbard was trimmed with black shark skin.
“Gate-blocking sword” (lanmendao) and scabbard (qiao), covered with black shark skin, author’s collection.
If we analyze the lanmendao from the point of view of the above classification according to the shape of the blade of the peidao belt swords, then it undoubtedly belongs to the category of nuweidao, although it has many of the features of liuedao, thus being an intermediate link in the transformation of the liuedao swords officially adopted by the Qing army into a new category of swords Nuweidao, which became popular in the mid-1700s, and were originally used primarily by folk martial artists, village militias, and rebels of various stripes.
The components of peidao using the example of the “Gate-Blocking Sword” (lanmendao):
a) handle/handle - daobin - 刀柄;
b) head/pommel - bingshou - 柄首;
c) cross/guard - daopan - 刀盘;
d) coupling - daogu - 刀骨;
e) blade - daoshen - 刀身;
f) blade - daoren - 刀刃;
g) tupyo - daobei - 刀背;
h) tip - daojian - 刀尖
i) golomen - daomian - 刀面;
j) elman - daoshanren - 刀上刃.

In Europe, this type includes a combat flail, the striking part of which is much shorter than the base and is a spiked club bound in iron. The flexible joint is quite varied in length and is associated primarily with agricultural traditions. Depending on execution, it can wrap around the opponent's weapon or arm, or, if short enough, trap the opponent's arm between two pieces of the flail like a vice. Such weapons were very effectively used in the Middle Ages by foot soldiers in the fight against horsemen in general, and armored knights in particular. The articulated part of the combat flail, like a hammer, struck the armor, causing not only a mechanical, but also an acoustic effect on the enemy. Moreover, the skill of handling a flail among the peasants, and the foot army was mainly recruited from among them, was brought up from childhood and, in general, did not require special training.
In the East, the appearance of any weapon is usually associated with some historical figure or well-known historical plot.
For example, in China, the invention of the sectional pole is attributed to the founder of the SUN dynasty, Zhao Kuangyin (10th century). While still a simple warrior, he was famous as a pole fighter. Once, during a fight, his weapon broke, but, since the pole was bamboo, it did not break into pieces, but, having broken, hung in his hand. Creatively assessing the capabilities of his “new” weapon, Zhao continued the battle and defeated his opponent. He liked this version of the pole, and a chain later began to serve as a joint for the two parts. This is how the two-section Liangzegun pole was born.
Unlike an ordinary flail, the liangzegun consists of two equal halves, each of which is about a meter long. The connecting chain is formed from just a few rings. You can fight with Liangzegun like a short pole or stick, striking with both ends, or you can swing it like a flail. The hanging part describes large circles and allows you to block blows at different levels. You can take the liangzegun by the ends and catch the enemy's weapon between the two folding halves. You can, by folding it, approach a close distance or, conversely, by releasing one end, you can sharply increase it.
In China there is also a direct analogue of the European fighting flail, consisting of long and short sticks on a flexible joint. This weapon is called "shaojiegun" or "sweeping pole". It exists in two versions:
“long” or “large” shaojiegun has a shaft length of about 150 cm and a flail length of 40-50 cm;
a "short" or "hand" flail has a shaft about 90 cm long with a similar flail length.
