Vepr carbine 7 62. Vepr rifled hunting carbines
Vepr rifle caliber 7.62×39
"Vepr" - self-loading rifled and smooth-bore carbines, which were developed on the basis of the 7.62-mm RPK light machine gun in 1995 by a team of designers from the Vyatsko-Polyansky machine-building plant "Molot" (P. M. Mokrushin, V. I. Lyamin, A. . I. Kabatchikov, etc.). Designed for commercial and amateur hunting of medium and large animals. Carbines of the Vepr series are produced at the Vyatsko-Polyansky machine-building plant Molot.
Vepr carbines are produced for cartridges 7.62×39 mm, 7.62×51 mm NATO (.308 Winchester), 5.56×45 mm NATO (.223 Remington), 7.62×54 mm R, 7, 62x63 mm in several different modifications and designs. The weapon's automation is built according to the Kalashnikov assault rifle design, has a high degree of reliability and is trouble-free when operating under various operating conditions.
Automatic reloading of the carbine is carried out by using the energy of the powder gases removed from the barrel bore into the gas chamber when fired, and the energy of the return spring.
To increase durability, the barrel bore and chamber of the carbine are chrome-plated; to reduce the flash of flame when fired, a permanent flash suppressor is installed on the muzzle of the barrel.
To eliminate possible inertial pinching of the primer on imported cartridges, the bolt striker is spring-loaded.
To increase safety, the Vepr series carbines are equipped with a flag-type safety lock. The stock is combined, with a pistol grip. A rubber butt pad-shock absorber is installed on the butt to reduce recoil.
To mount the optical, a dovetail-type side mount is used, identical to the Kalashnikov assault rifle.
The sighting bar of the Vepr series carbines allows for effective shooting at a distance of up to 300 m.

Operating principle:
Bolt-action -
this type provides opening and closing of the barrel by moving the bolt along the axis of the barrel.
The mechanism is popular due to the fact that the bolt in it can easily be used as the main driving force for activating other weapon mechanisms - feeding cartridges, removing spent cartridges and others, thereby ensuring simplicity and rationality of the design of the weapon, creating the best conditions for reloading and layout weapons in general.
Inertial principle- a weapon in which automatic action is achieved by using the recoil energy generated by the shot;
Gas principle- a weapon in which the automation is driven by the pressure of powder gases.
Union -
a gun with a break barrel. Fittings usually have two barrels, but there are single-barrel and less often three-barrel. The advantage of the fitting compared to a magazine carbine is the ability to quickly fire a second shot without wasting time on jerking the bolt.
Equally important is the greater reliability of the fitting, since if the first shot misfires, you can immediately, without delay, shoot from the second barrel.
Henry Brace - a principle of operation in which moving the Henry reloading bracket downward and forward allows the locking wedge to be lowered. Moving the bracket in the rear and upward directions allows the bolt to send the next cartridge into the barrel from the magazine, then the wedge rises up, installing itself in a cutout in the rear of the bolt, locking it.
Feeding is carried out by an integral box magazine, in which the cartridges are arranged in a single row; the cartridges are loaded and the spent cartridges are ejected as a result of the open bolt through the upper window of the receiver.
Guns with a gas exhaust system use the energy of the powder gases from the fired shot. A small portion of the gases are expelled from the barrel through one or more holes, which creates an expansion inside the cylinder, closed by a sliding piston. The stroke of the piston with the generated impulse carries out the movement of the bolt. Thus, the spent cartridge case is ejected and a new cartridge is fed;
Sights:
There is a division according to the type of sighting device used for aiming:
Open
Also called iron sights.
Closed (aperture sight)
Closed sighting devices are presented in the form of a disk located in close proximity to the shooter’s eyes, with an aperture hole
Optical sight
Collimator sight
Systems that use a collimator to construct an image of a reticle projected to infinity. Radiation from the light source in the sight is reflected by the collimator lens into the observer's eye in a parallel stream. It is enough that the pupil is within the projection of the sight lens along the optical axis.
Some manufacturers use special technologies in the manufacture of sighting devices. For example, Benelli uses a carbon fiber sight with a high-brightness fiber optic insert in some shotguns, which makes sighting more comfortable and accurate.

Self-loading hunting carbines Vepr (SOK 94) are intended for commercial and amateur hunting of medium and large animals. They have been produced since 1995 and are extremely unified with the RPK. The recharging system is automatic, gas-operated. The design of Vepr carbines (SOK 94) ensures reliable functioning of parts and mechanisms, as well as high-quality shots in various weather and climatic conditions at ambient temperatures from -50° to +50°C. The butts and forends of the carbines are made of walnut. The buttstock is orthopedic in shape with a cutout for the thumb; for ease of shooting, it is made with a cheek and a rubber shock absorber. Vepr carbines (SOK 94) were created using design solutions implemented in M. T. Kalashnikov’s small arms systems - automatic and light machine gun. The open sights of the carbine consist of a semi-open type front sight adjustable in two planes and an aiming bar with distances of 100-300 m. The front sight block of the AK/RPK type or frame type can be installed on the carbines. On the left side of the receiver there is an installation base for attaching the optical sight bracket. The design allows you to fire from an open sight without removing the optical sight. The slotted flash arresters installed on the Vepr (SOK 94) carbines are non-removable.
The Vepr carbine is produced at the Vyatsko-Polyansky Molot machine-building plant in three versions: the Vepr itself chambered for 7.62x39, the Vepr-308 chambered for .308 Winchester (7.62x51M) and the Vepr-223 for the cartridge .223 Remington (5.56x45). Carbines, of course, are somewhat different from each other, but first we will talk about the Vepr system itself, and then we will dwell on the features of the different options.
Adjustable rear sight, inherited from the Vepr machine gun,
allows an experienced shooter to correct for wind
when shooting at long distances
When creating the Vepr hunting carbine, maximum use was made of components and parts of the Kalashnikov light machine gun (RPK), which is produced in Vyatskie Polyany. The carbine inherited from the machine gun a powerful receiver, a heavy barrel, and a rear sight with a mechanism for introducing lateral corrections. The changes affected mainly the retention elements (stock and fore-end) and trigger. The self-timer was excluded from the design of the trigger, in order to prevent firing in bursts, the shape and dimensions of the sear and trigger were changed. The butt is made of orthopedic, “Dragunov” type, with a rubber butt pad. The forend is of a civilian type, without a protective lining on top, and is significantly longer in length compared to the combat version. The height of the butt comb makes it equally convenient to use both mechanical and optical sights.
A comfortable stock and excellent balance are the undoubted advantages of the carbine. The heavy and long (520 or 590 mm) barrel, made by cold forging, has a chrome-plated bore and provides excellent shooting accuracy. This characteristic is also positively influenced by a powerful receiver.
The long sighting line ensures high shooting accuracy with a mechanical sight.
"Vepr" can be equipped with an optical sight at the factory. Usually this is 4x optics from the Vologda or Vileika optical plants. If you want to install another sight on your carbine, then buy a weapon without optics - it’s cheaper. The optics mount on the Vepr is lateral, the same as on the AK. When zeroing an optical sight on a separately purchased bracket, do not forget that the parts of the bracket, after rough alignment, are fixed relative to each other with four pins. Otherwise, after several shots, the aiming point will definitely “float away”.
Vepris with mechanical and optical (if included) sights leave the factory adjusted to normal combat at a range of 100 m.
In order to ensure maximum safety in handling weapons, since 1997, all carbines supplied for export, and a certain number intended for the domestic market, are equipped with a spring-loaded firing pin. The fact is that foreign-made cartridges have a primer that is much more sensitive than that of Russian ammunition, which can lead to its inertial pinching when the cartridge is chambered when the bolt is not completely closed (as a result, damage to the weapon and injury to the shooter). While domestic ammunition is traditionally used in Russia, our hunters do not face such a problem, but imported ammunition that appears on sale will sooner or later raise the issue head-on with arms factories. The designers of Molot took care of this ahead of time.
Now about the differences in the design of “Vepray” for various cartridges.

The model chambered for 7.62x39 has been produced since 1995 and is extremely unified with the RPK. Almost all the distinctive design features are mentioned above.
In the Vepr-308 carbine, the locking unit has been strengthened, the bolt has three lugs, and the gas vent unit has been improved. The use of the .308 Win cartridge brought the Vepr very close in power to the Tiger carbine chambered for 7.62x54. According to CIP data, the energy of a bullet fired from a Vepr-308 carbine on a target at distances of 100 and 300 meters is only 10% less than that of a bullet fired from a Tiger.
Surely some owners of the Vepr-308 carbines of the first releases were faced with the problem of selecting ammunition for their weapons. The fact is that the 7.62x51 cartridges, produced in our country until the mid-90s, had a total length of 72 mm, while the 7.62x51M cartridge, for which the Vepr was developed, has a slightly shorter length. Because of this, filling the magazine with such cartridges and sending them into the chamber was difficult. A modified 7.62x51M cartridge (.308 Winchester) or a foreign-made cartridge that fully meets the requirements of the Vepr developers became available to hunters in remote regions of Russia relatively recently. Since 1997, magazines with a capacity of 5, 7 and 10 rounds for the Vepr 308 can be equipped with any of the above-mentioned cartridges.
In 2000, three more modifications of the “Vepry” appeared chambered for 5.56x45 (.223 Remington), 5.45x39 and .35 Remington caliber cartridges. They are among the latest Hammer products.

Vepr-308 is a self-loading hunting carbine (SOK), developed at the Vyatsko-Polyansky Machine-Building Plant (VPMZ) “Molot”. The designers used elements of the handheld system (RPK) in its creation, which gave the gun high reliability and excellent combat characteristics.
Produced since 1995, “Vepr” enjoys well-deserved popularity among hunters who appreciate the high quality and low price.
General information
The history of these weapons began in the early 90s, when government orders for weapons factories began to decline and it was necessary to find other sources of livelihood.
At that time, many enterprises of this kind began to develop hunting weapons for the needs of the domestic market and for export. VPMZ “Molot” was no exception.
The design group of this plant, consisting of P. Mokrushin, V. Lyamin, A. Kabatchikov and other gunsmiths, presented their carbine. It was based on a simple and reliable RPK system, chambered for a 7.62 mm caliber cartridge, but was deprived of a number of components, in particular allowing automatic fire. The model was given the name SOK-94 “Vepr-308”.
This weapon was intended for hunting large animals (elk, roe deer, bear.).
The new product instantly gained popularity among hunters. Reliability, lethality, low price - all these qualities were combined in the Vepr-308 carbine. Seeing such a stir, work on improving the rifle continued.
They released a separate modification for the NATO .308 cartridge (7.62x51).
This model was called SOK-95.
Design and principle of operation
In the appearance of the SOK-94/95 carbine, its legendary machine gun, the AK-74, is slightly recognizable.
In particular, this applies to the gas exhaust system. For the rest, the engineers used their own developments. The weapon is equipped with a wooden butt with a special groove for the thumb. There is a rubber shock absorber on the back side and a pistol grip. At the end of the barrel there is a flash suppressor and a muzzle brake-compensator (DTC).
To increase service life, the chamber and rifled barrel are chrome-plated. The stock is made of wood.
Open-type sighting devices have a rear sight, allowing targeted fire at a distance of up to 300 meters. There is also a mount for optics; for this purpose, a dovetail mount is used, located on the left side of the receiver. Flag type fuse.
The magazine on the Vepr-308 self-loading carbine can be used with 5,7 and 10 rounds, but there are also homemade ones with 20 rounds. When the clip is unlocked, a mechanism is activated to facilitate its removal. If there is no magazine, then it is possible to load the rifle by retracting the bolt and inserting ammunition there.
The gun's automatic operation is based on the use of the energy of powder gases and a return mainspring. When fired, powder gases are diverted from the barrel bore into the gas chamber. After which the mechanism is retracted, compressing the spring, the sleeve ejects. Straightening forward, the spring sends a new cartridge from the magazine into its place.
The rifle is often subject to various modifications by its owners. The butt, stock, and internal mechanisms are changed. Can be equipped with a muffler. It is possible to install optics, a high-capacity clip and other accessories for the carbine.
This is also facilitated by the availability of various elements of weapons for free sale and in particular in online stores in China.

This carbine uses a trigger mechanism like the AK-74, but the Molot plant engineers made a number of changes to it. The main one was the impossibility of firing in automatic mode.
In versions chambered for .308 Win, the firing pin was also changed. A spring mechanism was added to it to prevent the ammunition primer from being pinched.
Positive and negative sides
During its existence, “Vepr” has proven itself to be mostly good. People involved in commercial and recreational hunting highly value its unpretentiousness, the reliability of the system in extreme temperatures and high pollution, and most importantly, the cartridge retains its power over long distances.
This gun is used to hunt wild boars, deer and other large game.
Briefly about the advantages
- High reliability. This factor is due to the legendary ancestor of the SOK-95 - the Kalashnikov assault rifle. A more reliable and at the same time cheaper system has not yet been invented. The carbine is able to continue to work in a temperature range from -50 to +50. The main thing is to care for it properly;
- High lethal power and stopping ability of ammunition. If the beast is hit, it is guaranteed to be neutralized;
- Weak recoil makes it possible to accurately fire quickly;
- Accuracy of fire allows you to conduct effective fire at a distance of up to 300 meters;
- With the optics installed, you can use the original sighting mechanism;
Briefly about the cons
- The carbine has impressive weight and considerable dimensions, which is inconvenient;
- Not the best balancing;
- Wooden parts are not of the highest quality;
- Another drawback is the noise of the fuse when it is switched;
- The process of disassembling and cleaning the gas box is long and complex;

The SOK-95M “Vepr-308 Super” deserves special mention; the main changes in it affected the stock. She became whole. For production, beech or walnut wood is used.
The entire product has acquired a softer and more streamlined shape. Such a sharp change in appearance contributed to the perception of this weapon as a hunting weapon, and not a conversion from the PKK. This also led to a weight reduction of 100 grams.
The changes also affected the carbine barrel. It became more powerful, which led to an increase in the accuracy and range of an effective shot. The increase in mass was avoided by longitudinal valleys. The MTC (muzzle brake-compensator) has also been improved. It was combined with a flame arrester.
This reduced recoil and avoided temporary blinding in poor visibility conditions after the shot. The mount for optical sights was moved to the gas box, which is a drawback (the aiming line has decreased).
The fuse was also redesigned. It's now push-button. It has become more convenient to use and, unlike the old flag-type one, it is almost silent.
A new type of magazine has also appeared - for 3 rounds.
The Vepr-308 Super carbine also has its own separate model range:
- SOK-95M “Vepr-308 Super” – chambered for 7.62x51;
- SOK-95MS “Vepr-308 Super Sport” (Production discontinued.) – uses 7.62x51 stock;
- SOK-35 “Vepop-35 Sport” – uses .35 Remington ammunition. Also no longer produced.
Equipment
The carbines of the “Vepr” series are supplied by the manufacturer with a carrying strap and 2 magazines for the selected number of rounds. The belts are not of high quality and wear out quickly. In some types of rifles, the flash hider is removable.
Often, after purchasing a SOC, experienced hunters carry out tuning. They add body kits: bipods, optics (like the SVD or Vintorez), and larger capacity magazines.
Some change the stock and stock. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize in a converted “Vepr” the carbine that was there before the conversion.
Currently, hunters are happy to purchase the Vepr-308 self-loading hunting carbine. Which is an indicator of its quality and reliability.
Video
The global arms market is represented by a wide range of different shooting models. In the United States, the Winchester .308 carbine is very popular among hunters. In Russia, a very popular similar weapon is the Vepr-308 Super carbine chambered for 7.62x51 mm. Due to the design features, the weapon is suitable for use at very low temperatures. Judging by the reviews of hunters, the Vepr-308 Super has a reliable design that ensures high shooting efficiency. In addition, this shooting model is relatively inexpensive on the Russian market. Information about the design and performance characteristics of the Vepr-308 Super is contained in the article.
Acquaintance
This weapon was developed by weapons designers at the Vyatsko-Polyansky machine-building plant "Molot". "Vepr-308 Super" is a self-loading hunting carbine (SOK). The Kalashnikov light machine gun (RPK) became the base, the elements of which were used by the creators of the carbine. Thanks to this, the SOK has high reliability and excellent combat characteristics.
About design
In the 90s, the number of government orders at weapons factories sharply decreased. Therefore, they were forced to look for new sources of income. As a result, the manufacturer refocused on the needs of the civilian consumer: work began on creating shooting models for Russian hunters. Some weapons were made to order for export to other countries.
One of these manufacturers was VPMZ “Molot”. Using a reliable RPK system, the design team (P. Mokrushin, V. Lyamin, A. Kabatchikov) created the Vepr carbine. A 7.62 mm cartridge was provided as ammunition for this model. In the technical documentation, the rifle unit is listed as “Vepr-308” SOK-94. The weapon was created specifically for hunting roe deer, elk and bear. Soon a modification of the carbine chambered for 7.62x51 mm cartridges was released. The modified carbine is known as SOK-95.
How does Vepr-308 Super differ from the standard model?
In order for the new rifle unit to qualify as a hunting weapon rather than a combat weapon, the designers had to make a number of changes to some technical components. According to experts, the firing mode system in the SOC has been changed. Thus, it became impossible to fire in bursts from a carbine. It has a solid stock, which is made of beech or walnut wood. In addition, the developers changed the design of the stock, as a result of which the shooting unit became more like a hunting one than a combat one.
By using longitudinal lobes in the design of the weapon, the creators managed to reduce the weight of the carbine to 3900 g. In an effort to make shooting more accurate and efficient, the SOK 308 Super barrels are produced more powerful. The muzzle-braking compensator is used as a flash suppressor. Due to the design solutions taken in the "308 Super" carbine, recoil is significantly reduced. Judging by consumer reviews, when using hunting weapons at night, blinding of the shooter is minimized as much as possible.
In SOK "308 Super" the designers installed fasteners for optical sights on the gas chamber. As a result, the aiming line was shortened. There are no sharp or catchy elements on the body that complicate the hunting process. Instead of a push-button safety for the Super. 308 carbine, a push-button one was developed, located above the trigger guard. As a result of improvements, activation and deactivation are much quieter. The shooter does not have to remove his hand from the stock to press the button. Ammunition can be supplied from either 10-, 5-, or 3-round magazines.
About the external design
SOK "Vepr-308 Super" (photo of the hunting carbine is presented in the article) has much in common with the legendary Kalashnikov assault rifle. According to experts, both shooting models have similar gas exhaust systems.
In all other respects, the engineers took advantage of their developments. The butt of the carbine is made of wood. There is a special recess in the butt of the SOK for the thumb. The rear part became a place to place a rubber shock absorber.
The Vepr is equipped with a pistol grip. The end of the barrel is equipped with a flash suppressor and a muzzle brake-compensator. In an effort to increase service life, chambers and rifled barrels in carbines are subjected to a chrome plating procedure. Wood is used to make the stock.
About ammunition
Ammunition is supplied from box magazines. Their capacity can be 3, 5, 7 and 10 rounds. Some owners use artisanal stores. The capacity of such homemade products reaches 20 ammunition.
According to carbine owners, replacing magazines is easy. The weapon is equipped with a special mechanism that is activated when the clips are unlocked. If there is no magazine to load the carbine, the shooter needs to retract the bolt and insert a cartridge there.
How it works
The self-loading carbine is equipped with the same trigger mechanism as the 74th model of the Kalashnikov assault rifle. However, the weapons engineers of the Molot plant made some design changes in the design of the hunting SOK. As a result, it became impossible to fire from a carbine in automatic mode.
The trigger mechanism works due to the energy created by the powder gases and the return mainspring. During a shot, powder gases are removed from the barrel channel into a special gas chamber. In this case, the mechanism is pulled back. As a result, the spring is compressed. In this way, the spent cartridge case is extracted. Then the compressed spring straightens and sends a new cartridge from the holder.
About sights
The Vepr-308 Super SOK is equipped with a rear sight, which ensures effective shooting at a distance of up to 300 m. In addition, the carbine is equipped with special dovetail mounts for optical sights. The place for fasteners was the left side of the receiver.
About ammunition
The SOK was created specifically for the 7.62 mm caliber cartridge. Carbines are equipped with two types of ammunition:
- 7.62 x 39 mm (Russian version).
- 7.62 x 51 mm. This ammunition is a foreign analogue.
About finishing
According to the owners, despite the high quality of workmanship, the carbine can be made almost perfect with a little intervention. In hunting weapons, there may be defects at the junction of the receivers and butts. Judging by the reviews, the screw in the shank may slightly reduce accuracy.
To fix this problem, the owner needs to drill a hole in the stock. It is important that it turns out to be end-to-end. Then you need to insert a screw into it and, using a cone washer, install the butt. There are often cases when parts in the trigger mechanism are not processed well enough, which negatively affects shooting accuracy.
This defect can be corrected using sandpaper. Owners of carabiners need to carefully clean the places where the hooks and triggers catch. According to experts, the result will be much better if you work with a diamond needle file. Judging by numerous reviews, replacing stocks, stocks and internal mechanisms is quite common. Owners modify and improve their hunting weapons in a variety of ways: they equip them with devices for silent shooting, optical sights and other accessories. Various weapon elements are available for free sale.

About weaknesses
Despite the presence of undeniable advantages, the Vepr-308 Super is not without some disadvantages. The disadvantages of this shooting model include:
- Large mass. In addition, the carbine is quite large.
- Judging by some consumer reviews, Vepr-308 Super has poor balancing.
- The wooden parts are not processed well enough.

How to care for juice
Many owners appreciate the quality of the automation. Carbines have a fairly high service life. According to hunters, after firing 500 shots, the SOC mechanics function properly and do not misfire.
Experts advise thoroughly cleaning the gas piston every time after use. This recommendation is due to the fact that after a while it will be problematic to remove carbon deposits.
The barrel channel is also made of quite high quality. However, according to some hunters, there are cases when after 200-300 shots the protective chrome layer begins to peel off. This can be prevented by cleaning the barrel regularly. According to hunters, using the factory cleaning rod that comes with the carbine is inconvenient. It is best to purchase a cleaning rod separately. It is desirable that it has a rotating head.
It is easy to remove dirt and carbon deposits using white cotton tape, which is used to insulate the windings of electric motors. First, the tape must be cut into several strips. Then they wrap the ramrod. The barrel can be considered clean if the color of the tape remains consistently white.
Experienced hunters do not recommend using too much lubricant. The mechanical components of the carbine are treated with a clean cloth, dampened and thoroughly wrung out. This is especially important in cases where the weapon is planned to be used at sub-zero temperatures. If you have to shoot in the summer, then you can put less lubricant on the rag. It is best to clean the rifle with oil intended for diesel engines.
