What is the temperature in October in Greece. Weather and temperature in Greece in October
Living in Athens for 2 years now, you involuntarily begin to feel the rhythm of the city. In the summer months everything is buzzing like a hive from the abundance of tourists, in winter it is quieter and calmer. This does not mean that summer is the best time to visit Athens. The climate here can be damn hot, especially in August. And if you have arrived to Athens for sightseeing, then you will suffer more. And if you are looking for a beach holiday, then it is better to go straight to the Greek islands.
There are many factors involved when choosing the best time to travel to Athens. Do you want to avoid crowds of tourists? Looking for pleasant weather for sightseeing and surrounding areas? Do you want to travel on a budget and save as much as possible on accommodation and air tickets? I took all these factors into account and in this article I will talk in detail about the pros and cons of each month.
You'll know for sure when to look tours to Athens.
Best time:
- From mid-April to mid-June.
- September – mid-October.
- August (very hot, but at the same time very quiet, the inhabitants of Athens dispersed to the islands).
Weather in Athens by month
This is not the most exciting article in the world, but it is very useful and informative. I've listed all the pros and cons of staying in the city for each month of the year.
January
Athens is not London. There's not much action around New Year's, but the annual fireworks display near the Acropolis is definitely worth checking out. During the rest of the month, you can expect quiet and unpredictable weather in Athens. This is the best month of the year in terms of savings. You can buy rooms in the best hotels in the city at reasonable prices, and they will only increase further.
Pros
- Cheap accommodation and air tickets.
- Quiet city without crowds of tourists.
Cons
- Unpredictable weather - snow, wind, rain, sun. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring.
- All historical attractions are open at reduced hours.
February
A strong contender for the best time to visit Athens. Last year the weather was great, but the year before it still snowed. There are no guarantees. But flights and hotels are still cheap, and the weather is much better than in January. And few tourists.
Pros
- Cheap flights and accommodation.
- Few tourists.
- Pleasant weather especially towards the end of the month.
Cons
- It is impossible to say 100% that the weather will not let you down.
- Archaeological sites are open on reduced hours.
March
The weather in Athens becomes more stable in March. The days are getting longer, which means more daylight for walking. If you are planning a vacation, then I would advise you to come in mid-March.
Pros
- From mid-March the weather calms down and becomes warmer.
- Long days will give you more time to explore the city.
Cons
- Attractions are still open during winter hours.
- Hotel prices are rising - book your accommodation in advance.
April
April is a great month to visit Athens. But you need to take into account that Easter is taking place at this time - a big holiday in Greece. Greeks usually take a week off and spend this time with their families. Because of their movements around the country, airfare prices are rising, and some companies are taking vacations. On the other hand, you can visit the Greek Easter.
In any case, if you are going to Greece in April, check when exactly they have Easter. From there, look at the situation and adjust the travel time depending on your wishes. The weather in April is wonderful, but it is still too early to sunbathe.
Pros
- Warm sunny weather.
- Attractions have switched to summer operating hours.
- Airfare and accommodation prices are still relatively low.
Cons
- Some shops and businesses may be closed for Easter.
- Flight prices during Easter week are slightly higher.
May
In my opinion, May is the best time of year to visit Athens. Although there may be a rare cold day (+15 degrees) and a rainy day, most of the time it is warm and sunny here. At this time, cruise ships begin to bring tourists to Athens.
Pros
- Mostly good weather.
- Attractions are open late.
- It's not that hot yet.
Cons
- The number of tourists is increasing.
- Accommodation prices are beginning to rise noticeably.
- The possibility of precipitation is very high.
June
In June everything is about the same as in May. Only the temperatures are getting higher and the number of tourists is increasing. It's unlikely that you'll get rained out or frozen in June. (Don't hit me if this happens!)
Pros
- Great weather.
- Long day.
- It's time to swim in the Aegean Sea and eat ice cream.
Cons
- Increase in the number of tourists.
- Rising hotel prices.
July
In July, the high tourist season begins throughout Greece. There are a lot of tourists at this time. Airfare and hotel prices are at their peak. I advise you to book rooms in advance. And I don't think July is the best month to visit Athens. At this time it is very hot here, you will be exhausted while you look at the sights. At this time it is better to go to the islands.
Pros
- You definitely won't freeze.
- You can spend the whole day looking at the sights.
Cons
- It may be too hot for some.
- There are a lot of tourists.
- Prices are at their maximum.
August
August is another good month to come to Athens. There are a lot of tourists, but local residents travel to the islands for a couple of weeks and the city seems half empty. You may even be able to find free parking spaces! Yes, I know, crazy.
Pros
- There are fewer people in Athens and the atmosphere is more relaxing.
- Great time to walk around the city.
Cons
- It can be very hot.
- Many "local" restaurants, bars and businesses are closed for 2-3 weeks.
- Prices for flights and accommodation are higher.
September
After May, this is my second favorite month in Athens. The temperature is dropping and so is the number of tourists. In addition, in September there is a creative mood in Athens. There are shows, events, festivals and exhibitions throughout the city. If you want to get to know the culture of Greece better, come to Athens in September.
Pros
- Creative atmosphere in the city.
- Regular events and activities.
- The weather is great, the temperature is dropping, but it's rather pleasant.
- Full moon concerts at Herodion.
Cons
- There is only one minus - high prices.
October
The weather in Athens in October becomes unpredictable. There are still warm and sunny days here, but clouds and rain are becoming more common. It is at this time of year that archaeological sites switch to winter opening hours. Many of them will close at 15.00.
Pros
- Fewer tourists.
- There are still frequent exhibitions and shows.
- Nice weather.
- Prices are starting to fall.
- The water temperature is very comfortable.
Cons
- It rains at times.
- The temperature is decreasing.
November
Many people think that due to its location in the southern part of Europe, Greece is hot all year round. Of course, it is warmer here than in northern countries, but sometimes it can be surprisingly cold. Air conditioners switch from cooling to heating mode and the days get shorter. Winter in Greece is not the best time to visit.
Pros
- Few tourists.
- Great hotel prices.
Cons
- It's getting colder.
- Possible rain.
- All museums and archaeological sites close early.
December
Now we've reached December. This is the coldest month of the year. There were even a couple of snow days in December 2016. Fortunately for me, Christmas in Athens is not as popular as in the UK or USA. I think the lack of German style Christmas markets makes Greece a less popular destination for the Christmas holidays.
October is a great time of year to holiday in Greece. The first 2 weeks of the month can be considered the final part of the tourist season. Most charter firms reduce their sailings towards the end of October. All resorts are still open, but there are far fewer tourists than in the summer months, even in popular Athens. October is great for taking part in various excursions and museum trips without the tiresome crowds of people. It is in October that Greeks take short holidays to travel around Greece, and they already know a lot about traveling around their country.
Fall in Greece is beautiful as the tree leaves begin to turn yellow and red. The grape and olive harvest begins throughout Greece. Prices for products and services are reduced, and delicious ripe fruits are sold everywhere.
Autumn in Greece is traditionally a great time for sailing.
If you love cities, then October will give you a great opportunity to get to know the real Athens and Thessaloniki, to feel the rhythm of these cities without the crowds of tourists.
What is the weather like in Greece in October 2017?
The weather in Greece depends on what part of the country you are in and how lucky you are. Rain is most common in the north and west of the country. In Athens, on average, it rains 8 days in October, in Crete - about 5 days.
Greece is famous for its strong winds, which often disrupts the schedule of ferries that run between the islands. If you want to definitely avoid storms, then go to the east coast of Rhodes, everything is quiet there.
Temperature in Greece in October
The weather in Greece at the beginning of October is very pleasant. The temperature, on average, reaches 26-28 degrees during the day, becoming cooler in the evening. Therefore, if you are going to Greece in October, be sure to bring a light jacket. It's warmer in the south, and traditionally cooler in the mountains. If you're going trekking, take warm clothes with you. As November approaches, the temperature drops, but nevertheless, the weather at the end of October is still warm and sunny.
Water temperature in Greece in October on average +22-23 degrees, and you will still be able to swim and sunbathe. True, don’t be surprised if there aren’t many people interested besides you. At this time, tourists are slowly leaving, and the Greeks have been shopping for the summer.
Okha Day
The most important event in Greece in October is Okha Day, October 28th. On this significant day in 1940, Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas said his weighty oohs, i.e. “no” to the Italians’ demand to enter Greek territory in order to occupy strategically advantageous positions during the Second World War. His response plunged Greece into the war against Nazism, and the Greeks are still proud of their fierce struggle.
On this day, military and naval parades and other entertainment events take place in major cities.
