It marks the boundaries:
- from 25 rubles (the simplest and most popular to use, suitable for mass shooting and zeroing in weapons);
- up to 250 rubles (this is already ammunition foreign production, which are necessary for charging the famous Remington shotguns).
As a rule, the “size” 410 in our country is increasingly associated with the Saiga gun, and some experienced hunters consider it something not quite serious, worthy only of beginners and those who see hunting, first of all, as entertainment and rest. Apparently, in this regard, the price of 410 caliber cartridges ranges from 45 to 79 rubles (experimental, for Magnum). How to equip weapons for hunting at home Hunters who decide to experiment, moving away from the more usual 12- and 16-gauge “sizes” consider equipping 20-gauge cartridges at home as commonplace as everyone else.

Loading cartridges yourself Sokol is the oldest of all Russian smokeless powders; it began to be used in 1937. However, the gunpowder that is now produced according to GOST 1977 is noticeably different from its predecessor, since both the composition of the gunpowder and the requirements for it have changed.

And the ammunition for this type of weapon is cheaper than for the Saiga. In general, it should be noted that the “twenty” is always more enthusiastically perceived by those who like experiments and changes in emotions. After all, magnum ammunition is used here, and this is a completely different shooting experience, although the potential and capabilities of the 12th “classic” are preserved.
When hunting big game, of course, you should make sure that you have 20-caliber bullet cartridges in your arsenal, both homemade and magazine-fed. Part experienced hunters distinguish Fetter products from all ammunition. Since shooting is most often carried out at a distance of 35-40 meters from the game, the choice of ammunition is very significant.
How to load 20 gauge ammunition?
For example:
- Fetter-magnum cartridges equipped with shot No. 5 are used for shooting late-autumn mallards from 35 meters;
- Foxes and hares can be confidently shot with this type of ammunition, with shot No. 1, from 40 meters.
It is believed that a confident hit with magnum products using 20-gauge shotguns will be optimal for a distance of no more than 45 meters. This, by the way, is the lion's share of the shooting format (up to 90 percent) using shot. Big role In self-equipment of ammunition for hunting, a twist for 20-gauge cartridges plays a role, which every experienced hunter should have.
Of all these types of products available for sale, experienced professionals identify imported analogues - MEC, LEE, Hornady, RCBS and Ponsness. One such press is enough to ensure that you can independently equip yourself with cartridges for a lifetime.

Published July 6, 2013 | Author: Vlad Nalimov Most hunters, when loading cartridges, are guided by only one rule: “shoot, and that’s okay.” And only a few approach this process creatively, reverently, even to some extent pedantically.
These are true masters of their craft. The cartridges of such hunters enjoy well-deserved fame, they are sold out, actively exchanged for expensive store-bought ones, and are the pride of their owner. You can weigh it in any container convenient for you (don’t forget to subtract how much it weighs).
- To add gunpowder, experienced cartridge loaders recommend using a sheet of paper, so nothing will spill on the table.
- Pour the Falcon into the cartridge case and move it to the left. This way you can avoid charging the same cartridge twice. Even if we did not notice the “overcharge,” then later it will be easy to find out how much was overfilled.
- Now we catch up with the wad using a special device, and we do this without lifting the elbow from the table; the cartridge must stand on a special stand that prevents accidental puncture of the primer, and, accordingly, accidental detonation of gunpowder. If the wad is greasy, then we install cardboard spacers; if it is polyethylene, then we do not install it.
- Now we close the sleeves with containers.
- We press the containers into the sleeve.

Unlike Sunar, Sokol is not so demanding on weights and can forgive errors in calculations, although the requirements for it are the same - weighing accuracy up to 0.05 grams. In addition, a novice self-loader will find it much easier with this type of charge.
Because there are many more manuals about how much powder to add and what to do next. Characteristics of Sokol gunpowder Gunpowder is produced in plates with rectangular shape.
Important
Their base is nitrocellulose. This powder is stable, has a stable chemical composition, does not stick together. The surface of the plates is graphitized and gelled (just to protect it from sticking and electrification).
Length varies from 1.28 to 1.7 mm, thickness 0.13 mm. Gunpowder is produced in two grades - highest and first. How much gunpowder is in a pack? Release form: tin cans of 200-250 grams.
If you purchase the option in a galvanized box, then its weight is 45-50 kg.

You don't need to press hard, gunpowder doesn't like that in any caliber, be it 12, 16 or 20. You'll develop muscle memory pretty quickly.
In addition, the “overloading” of the cartridge is easy to see by the non-standard position of the wad. Dust-filled cartridges can be safely stored.
- From the trimmings of the sleeve we make a shot measure (very convenient and allows you not to weigh the shot every time before loading). The height of this measure should be such that the required volume of shot fits into it completely and without slides. You can make several of these measurements if you plan to equip cartridges different quantities fractions
- Now you can pour the shot into the cartridge case and press it properly with a hammer.

How to load a 20 gauge cartridge
The sequence of actions must be followed. The first step is to prepare the table: make enough space for work. You need to make sure that there is no gunpowder nearby, and you should not use matches.
Common mistakes: the hunter does not add gunpowder or repeats the action twice. First, you need to bring the sleeves into proper condition, if they are not new: clean and remove all excess, straighten the barrel.
Before loading 20-gauge cartridges, you should take into account that as the amount of gunpowder increases, the speed of the projectile increases and, accordingly, the recoil, the pellets lose their shape, and the gunpowder does not burn completely. #2 The primers are inserted so that they completely fit into the socket, then you need to start adding gunpowder. It is better to weigh it first. Then you need to put wad gaskets (2-3 mm) and press them to the gunpowder. You should also know how to store ammunition. The next step is filling the shell with shot.

How long will the gunpowder be stored? When properly stored in cans, gunpowder does not lose its properties for about 6 years, in a galvanized box - 25. Today, many people use Sokol domestic producers cartridges, for example, “Nitrogen”, “Fetter”, “Polyex” and others.
Falcon Hangment This is real headache many hunters. The fact is that the manufacturer still does not know or does not want to know about the emergence of modern materials.
Therefore, his recommendations regarding how much gunpowder per charge date back to 1977. Therefore, the information on the packaging is not entirely up-to-date. Many hunters determine how much gunpowder needs to be loaded for hunting rifles, trial and error. However, the earth is full of craftsmen, and they have repeatedly carried out tests to determine the maximum measure of gunpowder.
A subscriber to the magazine, V. Vitovich, from the village of Pregradnaya, Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region, contacted the editor with questions that are of undoubted interest to many other hunters.
1. Smokeless powder boxes indicate the weight of charges for 12- and 16-gauge shotguns, but do not indicate the charge for 20-gauge guns. Doesn't it follow from this that due to high pressure gases in small caliber guns, is it dangerous to shoot smokeless powder from them?
Subject to strict adherence to all rules for loading cartridges, the use of smokeless powder in 20-caliber shotguns is completely safe. The above, of course, applies only to guns that were tested with smokeless powder when leaving the factory.
Powder weights are usually specified by the manufacturer. In the absence of factory instructions on the weight of the charge, one has to proceed from the weight of the charge for 16 caliber, taking into account that the loads for 20 caliber will be 20-25% smaller. Consequently, if for 16 gauge the factory recommends a charge of 1.6 - 1.8 g, then the loads for 20 gauge will be in the range of 1.25 -1.45 g. In the book by A. A. Burdenko “Shooting on a round stand” weights of 1.4-1.7 g were proposed. The author did not indicate what kind of gunpowder we're talking about, but judging by the further text, it can be assumed that he meant the domestic “Falcon” gunpowder. If the cartridges are intended for a gun of pre-war production, then the weights recommended by Burdenko will be somewhat overestimated.
Shot shells for 20-gauge shotguns, regardless of their weight, are: in England - 23 g, in France - 24 g, in Germany - 25 g. 20-gauge shotguns with a 70 mm long cartridge case took a shot shell of up to 27 g and a correspondingly increased charge of gunpowder. However, the load weight always remained below the minimum load weight for 16 gauge shotguns.
Currently influenced by American tastes in Western Europe They produce magnum twenties for shells containing 32 g of shot. The weight of these guns ranges from 2.6 to 2.8 kg.
The selection of charges for guns of different calibers, as a rule, is carried out by manufacturers with constant checking of the developed pressures and initial speeds. Shooting from 32 and 28 caliber shotguns with smokeless powder designed for large calibers, without such verification it should not be carried out.
In connection with the production of small-caliber guns (IZH-56, “Olen” and IZH-58), we should also expect recommendations from powder factories on weighing smokeless gunpowder for them.
2. Baku stand exhibitors say that “Pheasant” and “Berkut” gunpowder cold weather do not burn out completely. Is this true?
Low air temperature undoubtedly worsens the combustion conditions of smokeless powders. Long-term storage of cartridges has a harmful effect on these gunpowders. severe frost. However, the main reasons for incomplete combustion (and prolonged shots) are: too weak pistons, insufficient diameter of the powder wads, insignificant resistance of the curled edge of the cartridge case and, most importantly, the degree of compression of the gunpowder by the powder wad. Depending on the type of gunpowder and the degree of its brisance, the powder wads are either only sent to the gunpowder, or pressed with a force of 1 - 2 kg. Some foreign gunpowder even require a free space of 1-2 mm between the gunpowder and the wad. The more you compress the gunpowder, the more completely and quickly its combustion will take place, and the higher the maximum gas pressure will be. If you hammer a wad using smokeless powder, the barrel will almost certainly rupture in the chamber.

For myself, I collected some tips from hunters for 20-caliber equipment. Now I want to share with you what I have left regarding equipment. I hope something will come in handy.
Loading Guide for REX II Powder Cartridges
Colleagues, for 20 gauge at 27/28 grm. fractions, how many REX II
With the permission of the topicstarter, I’ll ask, I have IZH43 20/76, I’ve been loading cartridges all the time (I like it myself, and somehow I didn’t really bother with 1.7-1.65 Sokol for 24 g shot.
But I wouldn’t sprinkle so much without testing if you equip containers and (most importantly) “star”. In this case, in the 12th, the recommended weight is 2.1g, which corresponds to the Sokol in the 20th (not Magnum) - a maximum of 1.68-1.78g.
In this case, for a Magnum shotgun, you can sprinkle more. “Magnum” pressures (up to 90 MPa “crasher”) in 20-gauge will be obtained with a weighing of Sokol gunpowder of about 2.2-2.3 g. But it’s worth thinking hard about whether it’s necessary. The pressure is already higher for the 20th than in the 12th, the fraction will begin to “crumple”.
The weights for the 20 are as follows:
Sokol 1.4g.-summer, 1.5g.-winter. fraction 24-25g. And the rest is at your discretion, if you want to receive good cartridge, you need to shoot and look at the targets, this is for another thread. And don’t waste your brains, rummage through magazines and literature, everything is there, accessible to the most stupid person.
P.S. : we found something to argue about. Fraction weights for 20s can be from 25g. and up to 28g...that's STANDARD projectile 20 cal.
It may be late, but I have 3 20-gauge shotguns, TOZ-106, Sever-5.6x39 and TOZ-B, pre-war, apparently, in a shell in the barrel, the butt is not original. I usually load the cartridges myself.
Usually - in Sokol plastic from 1.5 to 1.75 grams, depending on the can, then according to the season, either PC and 28 gram shot, or a cardboard seal, felt, fiberboard, cardboard, 30 gram shot, twist.
In brass, according to the second option, since I don’t use PC. main gun Sever and Tulka. Moreover, in Tulka the barrels are 700 mm, so I mainly shoot a combined shot charge of 5/3, 3/1, 1/00, because The gun's action is extremely close. I haven’t really figured out the North yet, I still struggled with rifled barrel. But he noted that magnum cartridges (factory) in the silhouette of a black grouse from 35 meters, etc. N 1 gives 1-3 hits, shot N 3 2-3 holes, shot N 5 to 5 but extremely chaotically. Factory-made 70-case cartridges give results much better, on average 2-3 hits, but not consistently. Cartridges Tehkrim, Fetter, Record, we don’t have any others. Yes, if in 16 caliber Rekord, oddly enough, gives a very good fight on IZH-12, then in 20 caliber it’s not shooting, but dispersing gunpowder.
the orientation is this: wad gunpowder. cardboard - 2.5mm, felt wads, gunpowder charge

Good morning, sorry if something is wrong. I'm talking about "Polev". I shot it with a saiga 20s several times, the "falcon" weight, as indicated in the equipment instructions, is 1.5-1.6 g. The bullet is straight for gunpowder and twist. I went through both a check and a paycheck, depending on which attachment I wanted to screw on. The “record” cartridge case is where the bullet goes with tension, and all the gunpowder burns out. But I was unlucky with REX - wedge after wedge, and I posted photos of 2 cartridges on the page “Samples of REX gunpowder”, people were surprised, but I decided to give up with REX (well, that’s me, and you, as you please). Yes, if anyone I must, in the “hunter” near m. Kashirskaya today I saw “Bronze dies for twists of 12/16/20 calibers” t.324-42-49. Best regards.

When loading cartridges with Sunar-Magnum powder, it is necessary to use appropriate igniter primers, this is especially true when loading cartridges for winter hunting. For equipment, capsules such as “Zhevelo-Powerful” are suitable; "KV-22", F-615 "Fiocchi" (Italy), CX-1000 (France), F-688 (Italy)
When loading 16- and 20-gauge cartridges, use the following weights of shot and Sunar-Magnum powder: 2.1 g of gunpowder and 30-33 g of shot for the 16-gauge and 1.8 g of gunpowder and 25-29 g of dr9bi for 20 gauge.
In addition, “Sunar-Magnum” gunpowder is used to equip bullet cartridges of 12-, 16-, 20-gauge, the bullet speed of which increases by 10-15% compared to cartridges equipped with “Falcon” and “Sunar” gunpowders.
Felt grease has better obturation and has less soot and lead. Wooden ones are better to take larger caliber, and place 2mm thick cardboard between the wads.
1. How much better is the obturation and how much less soot and lead is there? In the sense that is this a significant difference or can it be neglected in principle? If it’s significant, and it’s better not to neglect it, then post a link on how to properly lay out the felt.
2. If I understand correctly, then for the 20 you need a 16-gauge wood wad? How to stuff it in? He's not felt.
3. I only have felt wads. Should I use wood ones (if so, then for what) or will we break through with felt ones?
I still haven’t understood their fundamental functional differences.
For a double-barreled shotgun under 20x76, I load it like this: 1.7 Sokol, a thick cardboard spacer for gunpowder, a “sandwich” of felt and fiberboard, a thin spacer, 30 grams of shot (or 29 grams of shot + 1 gram of starch), close the cartridge with a twist. Sharpness - 3-4 shot diameters at 35 meters. Such cartridges were used to kill raven, ducks, black grouse, hazel grouse, and hare. Sometimes at extreme distances. Wounded wounds are rare, mostly if you hit them, then there is enough game - no one is in a hurry anymore.
Sunar-410 is definitely discarded; it is not worth using it at 20 k in Izh-58.
Start with falcon, 1.4 - 1.5 per 24 - 25 g of shot. It also ignites well from the centrifuge in brass.
You can use Sunar-35 and 42, but just select the hitch very carefully. Sunars give a strong deviation in pressure with a slight change in the weight. They ignite better from a centrifuge, but are more susceptible to the influence of temperature on the shot.
For them, the conversion is simple - the mass of shot and gunpowder from a can for 12k is multiplied by 0.7, this is the maximum weight, it is absolutely impossible to exceed it.
When using a plastic seal, you can further reduce the weight of the sunars.
There was already quite a lot of information on REX-II. Use the search.
Don't think that gunpowder is so universal. From 24 to 35g it should not be used. His "best" range is 28 to 32g. At 24g it can be used “out of desperation”; the shot parameters will be noticeably inferior to purchased cartridges with the same shot weight. But it is not at all worth using this gunpowder if the shot weighs more than 32g. Or get low speed(poor sharpness) or excessive pressure. I'm already tired of repeating this.
On the 35 Sunar I loaded 1.7 grams of gunpowder per 30 grams of shot. Fine.
I tried 2.2 powder for 28 shot on a falcon - complete crap, the recoil is crazy and the deformation of the shot is prohibitive. At 40 meters, the seven, one after another, entered the plywood to the diameter.
REX 1.5 per 30 grams of shot works well.
When loading cartridges into 76 cartridges for Saiga, keep in mind the fact that the cartridge case must be tightened or stared at least 5 mm, otherwise it will not fit into the magazine. Only if the top cartridge is in the magazine.
For myself, I collect all the cartridges with 28 or 30 grams of shot. I would do everything with 30 grams, but 30 grams of shot won’t fit into a 70 cartridge case, only on REX.
I didn’t shoot in winter, I don’t know. In the summer I beat great snipes with 1.5rex at 30 shot. They poured in with a bang, sometimes from extreme distances. As an example, I was wandering around the field and a couple of quacks flew into me, maybe 35 meters a little more. I landed both of them with the nine on the rex. I tried to sprinkle 1.6 - a lot. It kicks quite a bit, and the spread increases. For Saiga-20 REX1.5x30 is the best IMHO.
I liked REX.
"In response to your request, I inform you that in order to transfer from the powder charge indicated on the jar of gunpowder<Ирбис-охота>for a 16x70 cartridge to a 20x70 cartridge, subtract 0.2 grams of gunpowder from the powder charge indicated for the 16x70 cartridge, take the amount of shot in the 20x70 cartridge equal to 24 grams." :hunting:

Powder hunting falcon has been used successfully for a long time Russian hunters for equipping their guns. Cartridges using this high-quality smokeless powder meet modern world standards. Many domestic manufacturers of popular ammunition equip their cartridges with this type of gunpowder.
This substance is used in all shotguns. For gas-operated "self-loading" guns with a fixed barrel this type gunpowder is not used. The reason is sparking occurring in the sleeve outlet window receiver as a result of the release of unburned particles.
Characteristics
For Sokol gunpowder, the characteristics are as follows. The grains of this smokeless powder look like rectangular plates. The base is nitrocellulose. The ballistic material is stable and has a stable chemical composition.
The surface of the powder plates is graphitized and gelatinized. Ribs length: from 1.28 to 1.7 mm. Thickness: 0.13mm.
Powder plates are produced using complex roller technology. There are two grades: highest and first. The muzzle pressure is quite high, which leads to a loud sound of the shot and the appearance of a strong flame. The recoil is strong, the hunter gets tired quickly.
Positive point: the accuracy of the plumbing is low, only 0.05g. It is recommended to reduce this indicator.
The average pressure in the chamber during the firing of heated powder gases ranges from 630 kgf/sq.cm for 12-gauge shotguns to 650 kgf/sq.cm for 20-gauge shotguns. The bulk density of the substance is 0.510 kg/l.
Shelf life of Sokol gunpowder
The substance is packaged in metal jars of 200g and 250g. The mass of gunpowder enclosed in galvanized boxes, which are packed in wooden box, is in the range from 45 to 50 kg.
In original packaging, in jars, gunpowder can be stored for up to 6 years. If the substance is in a galvanized box, the storage time reaches 25 years. Properties of the Falcon during warranty period storage is not changed.
The ratio of the mass of the shot and the charge
Hunters verify the ratio of shot mass to charge for Falcon gunpowder experimentally by loading cartridges with different amounts of gunpowder and shot. There are coefficients that help calculate the required amount of substance for different fractions and types of hunts. The hunter makes adjustments according to his feelings, lethal force and the recoil of the gun.
Quantities:
C is the mass of the shot shell, which correlates with the mass of your gun.
P – sample (mass) of gunpowder.
K – charging ratio coefficient.
To calculate the mass of shot in 12-gauge guns, the weight of the selected gun is divided by 94, for 16-gauge – by 100, and 20-gauge – by 106. The value of the coefficient (K) fluctuates for Sokol smokeless powder in the region of 10/150–10/180. Based on the tests, it was determined that average value: 10/165.
The data shows that the average coefficient is 16.5. How do changes in the coefficient affect shooting performance? When the indicator increases to 18.0, accuracy increases, but the sharpness of the shot decreases.
Reducing the coefficient to 15.0 leads to a decrease in the first indicator and an increase in the second.
Powder weight
For proper weighing, it is best to use scales. The Sokol gunpowder measure can also be used, but the result will be less accurate.
Each batch of gunpowder is tested before packaging and shipping to consumers. Based on the tests, the powder weight is indicated on the package. Use the data from a specific can to load cartridges. Often the ratio is indicated only for 12 gauge.
If there is no marking for your caliber on the packaging, use the verified coefficients:
12 gauge K=1. To charge a shot weighing 34 g.
16 gauge K=0.815. To charge a shot weighing 28 g.
20 gauge K=0.675. To charge a shot weighing 23 g.
Each barrel has its own optimal powder loads. After a few tests you will know what ratio to use.
Sokol powder load for 12 gauge.
The mass of gunpowder when equipped with a 12-gauge gun, weighing from 3.1 to 3.4 kg with a shot charge mass of 31–36 g, is 1.9–2.1 g.
Sokol powder load for 16 gauge.
The mass of gunpowder when equipped with a 16-gauge gun, weighing from 2.8 to 3.1 kg with a shot charge mass of 28–30 g, is 1.6–1.8 g.
Sokol powder load for 20 gauge.
The mass of gunpowder when equipped with a 20-caliber gun, weighing from 2.5 to 2.7 kg with a shot charge mass of 23–24 g, is 1.4–1.6 g.
Every hunter must field conditions determine what ratio of all components for charging his gun will be optimal.
