1. Stephen Covey - short biography, field of activity, success story
Business people rarely share the secrets of their success: competition obliges them to apply knowledge and skills for purely personal purposes.
All the more appreciated is useful literature on entrepreneurial activity and management, which reveals the internal mechanisms of commerce and motivates novice businessmen to bold business projects.
Stephen Covey (1932-2012) is a well-known best-selling author, management and leadership consultant, teacher and lecturer, public speaker and wonderful family man.
During his life he has written dozens of useful and interesting books on efficiency, business management, time management, and his own life.
The year of the first publication of the future world bestseller is 1989. Today the book has been translated into 40 languages and sold in the amount of more than 30 million copies.
The audio version of the work became the world's first book in this format, selling more than a million copies.
What is this book about? This is an accessible and engaging presentation of Covey's teachings on managing one's own life and a guide to achieving personal effectiveness.
The reader is invited to develop a series of skills that will change perception and help you understand how the world around you works.
The book explains in detail how to achieve positive changes in your life.
Covey insists that every person who strives for success and efficiency needs to make a "paradigm shift."
This will lead to a radical change in views of the world and will allow you to interact with people, ideas and things in a new way.
And now the 7 skills that Covey writes about:
- Proactivity: accepting responsibility and understanding that our own life is entirely at our disposal.
- Understanding the end goal. Each person must determine for himself the main values and life priorities. Move towards a personal mission gradually and keep it in mind all the time - this is the only way to achieve maximum efficiency.
- Start with important things and not urgent. Discard or entrust to others everything that prevents you from moving towards your main goal.
- Learn to think in the spirit of "Win-Win". The skill relates to relationships with others: appreciate the people you interact with. The victory of all participants in the common cause is much more valuable than the victory of the individual.
- First seek to understand the other, and only after that - to be understood by yourself. Learn the skills of productive listening to people - this creates an atmosphere of respect and care.
- Create synergy. This term refers to the combination of strong qualities of individuals in a team. Working together, you can achieve faster and more impressive results.
- "Sharpen the saw"(improve and develop). To lead a rich life and act with maximum efficiency, you need to keep your body and spirit in shape: eat right, get enough rest, and devote time to physical development.
In addition to a detailed description of the skills, the book pays a lot of attention to ethical issues and the problem of freedom of choice. It is the ability to choose how to act in certain life circumstances that Covey sees as the main advantage of human beings.
This work is a useful read for anyone involved in personal development or management issues. The ideas presented in the books help to live in harmony with oneself and interact more effectively with others.

Stephen Covey - biography
Stephen Richards Covey is a famous American writer, business coach, speaker, entrepreneur who has achieved tremendous success in management. He devoted his life to educating people, advising them on the issues of competent business management, teaching them the right self-organization and revealing the most effective ways to improve economic performance. His iconic work, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, was named one of Time's 25 Most Influential Business Works. By 2017, about twenty-five million copies had been sold, translated into more than thirty languages.
Stephen was born on October 24, 1932 in Salt Lake City. He grew up in a religious family - his grandfather was a Mormon apostle, his mother actively attended church. This influenced the formation of Covey's worldview - religion left a noticeable mark on his life and approved many important values \u200b\u200bthat he never violated. Stephen's second grandfather was a businessman - he owned a chain of hotels "Little America". Growing up, the future writer decided to sell the family business and devote his life to public speaking and teaching.
Stephen's childhood passed outside the city limits. The boy grew up on a farm with his brothers and sisters. They were his best friends and main playmates. Steve's parents were intelligent people who loved literature and self-education, so the boy had a craving for reading since childhood.
While studying at school, Covey was seriously interested in sports, but due to a serious injury, the boy had to leave physical activity. Stephen began to study hard and in many ways was ahead of his peers. The young man graduated from school earlier than usual. In high school, Steve became interested in the possibilities of oratory and its impact on others. An ambitious student had an unusual desire - to change the whole world. He becomes a member of a debating club and develops his talent for public speaking. It should be noted that Covey's parents supported their son in everything, instilling in him self-confidence and a focus on success in the future.
At the age of sixteen, Stephen becomes a student at the University of Utah and graduates with a bachelor's degree in business management. Soon, Covey becomes an MBA after studying at the prestigious Harvard University. The distinguished educator also has a doctorate in religious studies from Young Mormon University. The total number of doctoral degrees of the famous American is twelve.
Religion played an important role throughout Covey's life. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints until the end of his days and also spent two years in the UK serving in the LSD Church. Beginning in 1962, he served as president of the Irish Mormon Organization. Even while studying at Harvard, he delivered sermons and gathered a huge number of listeners. Stephen's writer's piggy bank has collected several works devoted to religious studies: "The Spiritual Roots of Human Relations", "Divine Center" and others.
Stephen began his teaching career at Brigham Young University, from which he graduated. After working there for five years, Covey left for Ireland for a while, and when he returned, he decided to establish his own educational space. In 1985, Stephen founded his own business consulting and personal growth training firm, and ten years later this company turned into a global FranklinCovey project that teaches the basics of successful entrepreneurial activity (today, the representative offices of this center operate in more than a hundred countries). At this time, the name of Stephen Covey is becoming more and more popular every day. In 1994, he received international and national awards, becoming the best businessman of the year. The year 1998 was marked by the receipt of the international Sikh "Man of the World" award. In 1999, the outstanding coach was awarded the honorary title of speaker of the year.
The year 2008 was marked by the opening of the author's Internet resource Kovey, where an outstanding business consultant included his online courses and webinars. Two years later, Covey comes to work at the John Handsman School of Business, where he not only lectures and conducts research, but also initiates new educational courses that train leaders and managers. Since 2010, Covey has been actively promoting the integration of his educational concepts into the educational process of elementary school, inviting parents to develop a leader's mindset in their children from the first grade. His concept was called “The Leader in Me”.
Stephen not only announced his ideas and recommendations from the podium, but also placed them in literary works of a popular science nature. His first business book was The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, published in 1989. This work instantly took the leading positions in the reader's ratings and made the author famous all over the world. His other works are soon out of print, revealing his ideas more deeply: “The Eighth Habit: From Efficiency to Greatness”, “Leadership Based on Principles”, “Living with the Seven Habits” and others. In addition, Stephen Covey is a recognized authority and expert in family education (among his works there is even the work "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families", recognized as one of his best books). He was the father of nine children and the grandfather of fifty-two grandchildren. In 2003, the famous American was awarded the National Paternity Award.
Stephen Covey lived a decent life and left behind a huge cultural and educational legacy. An outstanding business coach continued to lead an active lifestyle and play sports even in old age. He died in 2012 at the age of 79 due to complications from a bicycle injury.
The total number of works by the American writer and teacher is about twenty, including audio books and works of religious content. An excellent book, I have read it many times, it is an excellent motivator, it is written in simple language, all terms are described quite clearly, links are given to other sources of information, it infects with purposefulness.
Answer
I heard a lot of forestry about this author and about his book "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", but unfortunately for several years my hands never got around to reading it, then there was no time, then I could not find it in stores. In general, I didn’t search so hard, so I asked a couple of times. And finally, after going through online trainings on self-development, where once again I heard a mention of this work, I decided, found a book on the Internet and downloaded it. And I even started reading right away. And I read avidly, although such literature is advised to read slowly, thinking through all thoughts, analyzing, as if looking at oneself from the outside.
I can't help but mention the author. Stephen Covey is a famous American teacher and consultant on leadership, life management and organizational management, an outstanding speaker, and a successful businessman. He is also the author of numerous bestsellers. Some of which are on my waiting list to read. And now I'm not going to put them in a distant box.
Well, now about the book itself.
I will describe briefly, since it is possible to retell and argue for a very, very long time ...
At the beginning of the book, the author makes a person think about the idea that the world is not the same as you think, that it is completely different for each person. The essence of the book is that Stephen Covey teaches his reader that in order to become a person, I would say a successful person, you need to change yourself, your attitudes, your paradigm. The book discusses 7 skills, seven simple principles that will help a person become a successful person. One flows from the other. There are basic principles. There are three of them. They are focused on the individual. Three more for social life. And the seventh is additional to all the previous ones.
I will not describe in more detail. Anyone interested in personal growth - this book is a must-read! Many things written seem very simple and obvious, but this is only in theory. In practice, however, it is not so simple. Although, this is just my vision, it may be easy for someone. The book, as I already wrote, is intended for internal work on oneself. It is necessary to read it perhaps more than once, returning again and again. That's what I had to do too. After the first reading avidly, but moved on to reading as they say in places. I reread those moments that interested me the most, where I have the greatest gaps, and what I would like to change. You don’t need to expect quick results from reading, all the same, working on yourself is work and perhaps the hardest.
I recommend the book to everyone, at least for reading once, at least for understanding that there are other people who are more effective, how and how they live. And you can get something for yourself.
Answer
Despite the fact that I fell in love with books from the field of personal development for a long time, my acquaintance with this book took place only now. Many of our modern authors refer to it, and after reading it, I made sure that this is a real classic that works and will work even in the distant future.
At the beginning of the book, the author suggests "shifting the paradigm", which will allow you to understand that the world is not what it seems to you and your interlocutor sees it completely different. To look at the world without presuppositions is quite an important point. I was also impressed by the analysis of the conflict between personality ethics and character ethics. As a person of character ethics, I am quite pleased with the author's opinion: have a core inside and bring it to the outside world, and do not be actors playing self-confidence.
But the greatest admiration and respect was caused by Stephen Covey's attitude to his own principles. What he writes about, he uses everything without exception in life: in the family, in the social, and in the business sphere. Everything, everything, everything is fixed by his many years of experience. It's nice to use methods that really bring results.
Seven simple principles to help you become an effective person. Each of them is a consequence of the other. The first, second, third are the basic principles aimed at the personality. Fourth, fifth, sixth - on social life. And the seventh... helper for each of the spheres.
I was greatly influenced by the theory of balance of RS (results and means) and work with
emotional bank. I have already begun to bring these things into my life and I wonder how I used to live without it.
I like the "win / win" system, I've already heard about it, but now I understand and comprehend it. I think it can make various worthwhile deals for me both in sales and in the family.
The immediate result after reading for me was to help consolidate the center of personality. I rethought my values and principles. When you know your values and have an understanding of your own center, you know how to act in a critical situation and how to make the right choice. For example, if I have the choice to "skip a family holiday for a profitable business offer." I would rather miss the opportunity to work, but not miss what is important in my family.
A close acquaintance with the time management matrix was also important. The four squares will help with prioritization and planning for the busy person.
In general, I advise everyone to read this book (and it is better, of course, several times!), Work through it and increase your effectiveness. We are the creators of our own lives. Good luck to all!

Biography of Stephen Covey
Born in Salt Lake City in 1932. He spent his childhood on a farm surrounded by 3 sisters and a brother. In adolescence, doctors diagnosed Stephen with bone deficiency and banned sports. The guy focused on his studies and already in his early youth he discovered an interest in oratory and speeches.
At the age of 16, he continued his education at the University of Utah, enrolling in the specialty "Business Management" and successfully completed the course. But the training didn't end there - Covey received a master's degree from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Brigham Young Religious University.
Covey continued to study throughout his life, receiving a good dozen doctoral degrees and honorary degrees.
Engaged in oratory and teaching, Covey wrote books and preached religious ideas around the world. In the 1960s he worked for several years as a Mormon preacher in England and Ireland.
Returning to the US, he studied management at Young University, after which he returned to teaching. It was then that Covey finally realized that his main desire was to influence the world around him, changing it for the better.
Stephen became truly famous when he wrote and published his flagship book, The 7 Habits, which we will explore in detail in the next section. In addition to this work, he wrote other books that also became bestsellers.
Covey preached the unification of a person's personal values with universal "cosmic" values.
Effective management is impossible without finding a harmonious relationship of a person with himself and others.
Stephen Covey
Let the reader not be confused by a certain bias in a number of his books towards the Mormon Church: Covey himself claimed that the foundations of his teachings can be found in all major world religions.
Stephen Covey passed away at the age of 79 among those who loved him. He left a bright mark in the history of business and management, made a huge contribution to the development of man and the knowledge of his nature.

Covey considered principles and values as separate quantities - principles as external and natural laws, and values as internal and subjective, inherent in the individual. He argued that values govern human behavior, but principles ultimately determine the outcome.
Stephen Covey has also written numerous other popular books, many of which have become bestsellers:
- “Main focus on the main things”
- “Leadership Based on Principles”
- “7 Habits of Highly Effective Families”
- “The Eighth Habit: From Efficiency to Greatness”
From the latest, published in the 2000s:
- “Greatness for Everyday: Inspiration for a Meaningful Life” - 2006.
- “The Leader in Me: How Schools and Parents Around the World Help Kids Become Great” - 2008.
- “Predictable Results in Unpredictable Times” – 2009
