Met Gala history: the most famous outfits from the Costume Institute Ball. Met Gala history: the most famous outfits from the Costume Institute Ball Annual Costume Institute Ball
The Met Gala will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The stars prepare for this event in advance, because every time the organizers of the evening come up with special themes for the holiday. HELLO.RU decided to recall the most unusual concepts of the Met Gala of past years - from a punk party to a ball in honor of Jacqueline Kennedy.
2013 - Punk style
Last year's Met Gala was held under the auspices of the punk style, the founder of which is considered to be the famous British designer Vivienne Westwood. The stars tried their best to live up to the hooligan concept. No one wanted to shave their mohawk like Kelly Osbourne for such an occasion. Only Sarah Jessica Parker found a worthy alternative to shaving in the form of a feather mohawk. Madonna also distinguished herself by coming to the celebration in mini-shorts and torn tights. But, by the way, one could expect “the worst” from her.

2012 - Evening Schiaparelli and Prada
In 2012, celebrities honored the brands Schiaparelli and Prada. That evening, the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York saw a record number of stars in elegant dresses with trains. A similar style was chosen by Johnny Depp's fiancée Amber Heard, who at that time was not his fiancée, but, perhaps, was already dreaming of a quick wedding with Jack Sparrow.

2011 - Alexander McQueen Evening
Chic, glitter and bold decorative details - in 2011, the Costume Institute Ball was dedicated to Alexander McQueen, who passed away on February 11, 2010. That evening, celebrities opted for bright floor-length dresses, like Gisele Bundchen, or dresses with cascading “McQueen” hemlines, like Miranda Kerr. She, by the way, was still living happily with Orlando Bloom.

2010 - American Patriotism
In 2010, the Costume Institute Ball was held under the auspices of love for America and its beautiful women. Celebrities were invited to demonstrate their vision of national self-identification. Most of the stars on the red carpet expressed their patriotic spirit in bold details, namely open shoulders, deep necklines and revealing slits.

2008 - Superheroes
One of the most exciting Costume Institute Balls took place in 2008, when the stars felt like superheroes. The Batman and Catwoman costumes were left until Halloween, opting for more classic dresses, but with a twist. Katie Holmes, for example, came to the party in a scarlet dress - as bright as Superman's. Then any Superman for the actress was replaced by Tom Cruise.

2006 - Anglomania
If in 2010 America ruled the ball, then 4 years earlier celebrities came to the Met Ball to the anthem “God Save the Queen.” Anglomania is the theme of 2006, which not everyone followed. This does not apply to the Ball's "excellent student" Sarah Jessica Parker and her Scottish cape.

2004 - Fashion of the 18th century
The gentlemen invite the ladies to a waltz, music flows in the throne room... The theme of the Met Ball ten years ago was the fashion of the 18th century. Celebrities tried to present their vision of the Rococo style. Not everyone succeeded, but it is still pleasant to watch this historical transformation.

2003 - Gods
Gods in classical costumes filled the hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. On this evening, one could take any liberties that are not allowed to “mere mortals” - excessive feathers, like Anna Wintour, or a very transparent dress, like Nicole Kidman.

2001 - Evening in honor of Jacqueline Kennedy
In 2001, the wife of US President John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline, was honored at the Met Ball. Her sophisticated style still inspires admiration, which was noted by both Demi Moore and Jessica Simpson, who appeared at the event in feminine, flowing dresses.

1999 - Rock and roll
Rock 'n' roll tonight! Celebrities walked the Met Ball red carpet in dresses with bold details - deep necklines and slits at the hem. One of the most revealing images was presented by Elizabeth Hurley, who, by the way, has not yet lost her bold passion. As well as Gwyneth Paltrow, who even in 1999 wore dresses with “predatory” prints.

Every year in New York, the Met Gala, a charity ball of the Costume Institute, is held - an event where those who do not disappear from the pages of glossy magazines appear in the most extravagant outfits. The ball marks the grand opening of a fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every year the event changes in accordance with the theme of the exhibition - and in different years the exhibitions were dedicated either to the French couturier of the early 20th century, Paul Poiret, or to the early deceased master of provocation Alexander McQueen. This year, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons will be at the ball, and the show, titled “Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” will feature more than 100 works of art from the designer’s collection dating back to 1980s.
The main goal of the exhibitions is to compare the fashion of the past and present in the context of modern culture. Getting to the ball is not so easy: the list of guests is personally approved, and table rentals start at $25 thousand. This year, unlike many previous ones, the ball will be held without the participation of Ivanka Trump and Kushner. Not because Anna Wintour is against their presence - Ivanka has enjoyed special authority in the fashion world since she was not the president’s daughter. However, Ivanka and Jared have already announced that they are too busy to participate in the event.
The Costume Institute has existed since 1959. But in order to attract the attention of secular society to it, it took the appearance of the legendary Vogue fashion editor Diana Vreeland - when she was forced to leave her post, she became a special consultant to the institute.
Since then, the annual exhibition has become the most anticipated event in the social life of New York.
The first ball took place in 1971 and was called “Fashion Sketch”. However, the first significant event in the history of the Costume Institute is considered to be the 1974-1975 ball “Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design”, which was first timed to coincide with the exhibition of the same name. Traditionally, guests of the ball began to gather first for the cocktail part, showing off the most unexpected outfits, and then, after viewing the exhibition, proceed to the gala dinner.

The Met Gala became a real sensation in 1997 - and still holds the mark. Then the ideological inspirer of the event became - by the time the ball was held - he was already deceased; he was killed several months before the event. The tragic death of the designer, sadly enough, became the reason that the press started talking about the ball. The 1997 Met Gala also featured a truly legendary guest list - Madonna, Cher, Princess Diana (right before the car accident), and Gianni's sister were invited. The real shock then was caused by the dress, which left the public no room for imagination. The outfit was decorated with a space print; Cher chose a black leather dress with a crucifix over the entire torso.
Madonna, Donatella Versace and Cher, 1997
In 1999, the theme was announced as “Rocker Style”. Supermodel Amber Valletta stood out in an all-gold outfit with a neckline that reached almost to her navel. A suit made up of a short, simple white top and fluffy white trousers caused a fashion sensation.
It is also rumored that this year Anna Wintour, who became the editor-in-chief of American Vogue, smiled for the last time on camera.
In 2004, organizers declared the event's slogan "Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century." Flowing feminine dresses with original cutouts were especially popular. Actresses and singers appeared in similar outfits. The most famous photograph associated with this year in fashion history was the photograph of Amber Valletta in full Marie Antoinette garb.

Global Look Press“Anglomania: tradition and transgression in British fashion” is the slogan of 2006 at the Costume Institute. The key figure in the main fashion event of 2006 was the famous fashionista and actress. The star of the cult TV series “Sex and the City” wore a dress from , in which the emphasis was placed on a bright tartan check and a matching hem.
In 2009, the dress of Madonna, who chose a mini dress for the celebration, remained in memory. The star paired a navy blue ruffled dress with a blue chunky scrunchie. In other words, this outfit remains a thing of the past. The 2009 Met Gala was dedicated to inspiration in the fashion industry: “The Model as Muse: Fashion Incarnate.” Celebrities adorned the carpet with bright looks, such as a model in an extravagant Versace in a laconic white dress of an unusual cut.
Attended the celebration with the dress that created it. The model complemented the silver dress with an unusual turban to match.
American Women: The Making of a National Identity, or the 2010 Met Gala Ball, is a mix of truly stunning outfits of all sorts. The British model chose a trouser suit from designer Phillip Lim, made in monochrome tones. The combination of black and white was preferred by most of the guests: in snow-white Burberry, in black leather Alexander Wang and in a flowing pearl outfit from the Ralph Lauren design house.
The year 2013 has gone down in fashion history. It was then that Anna Wintour agreed to invite her to the Costume Institute ceremony. The theme of the year was “Punk: from chaos to couture,” which the pregnant socialite didn’t fit into at all in her floral Givenchy dress. Her outfit sparked a lot of jokes online, and after the uproar, she wore the same dress for Halloween while she was pregnant with her second child.
The celebrity herself then called her outfit “a Kim Kardashian costume.”
Miley Cyrus / Ani Rubik / Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, 2013
Global Look PressSupermodel Anja Rubik's outfit - a red leather mini dress with a raised collar - attracted everyone's admiration. Fashion experts named the symbol of the Met Gala Ball 2013 as Rihanna, 2015 Lady Gaga, top model Gigi Hadid, Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o and Taylor Swift - the list is endless.
The Metropolitan Museum has never gathered under its roof so many of the most sought-after figures in art and cinema at one time. It remains to be seen whether 2017 will be able to repeat the tremendous success of past years, undoubtedly the most large-scale and revolutionary event in the fashion world.
The Met Gala or the Costume Institute Ball is one of the most pathetic and vibrant events in the fashion industry. Every year he gathers at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York all the cream of society, who must show themselves not only in all their glory, but also in accordance with the theme of the ball. By the way, the theme is always influenced by the exhibition taking place immediately after the festive evening. This year, on May 7, the theme of the evening was the relationship between religion and fashion at the exhibition “Divine Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”
One could have expected in advance that instead of too open “naked” dresses, we would see closed floor-length dresses, richly decorated with embroidery, lace and precious stones. But, as often happens with fashion events, not all guests of the evening managed to make the impression they expected. While some completely ignored the main theme of the evening, others failed to capture the imagination of fashion critics with overly modest or unoriginal dress designs.
Below are the least successful celebrity outfits, according to fashion critics.
The most controversial images of stars at the Met Gala 2018
Kate Moss
Kate Moss hasn't attended the Met Gala for several years, so one could assume that for her return the supermodel would prefer something unforgettable, rather than just a cocktail dress from Yves Saint Laurent.
Of course, she looked amazing in it, but it was too simple and boring for the Met Gala carpet with such an interesting and promising theme.
Selena Gomez
Selena was let down not only by her too simple dress for the extravagant Met Gala evening, but also by her makeup. More precisely, an attempt to give your face a blooming, tanned look. Too much bronzer on the young girl's face, which clearly did not match the skin on the star's ankles, did not make the best impression.
Bella Hadid
Bella, in her black latex, leather and lace outfit, created by a family friend, was reminiscent not of “divine bodies”, but of the evil witch Maleficent. If the theme of the evening had been Disney, then the star would have been on top, but compared to other stars, her outfit was somewhat less formal.
Amal Clooney
This year Amal took on the role of host of the evening. She arrived with her husband, choosing a suit from Richard Quinn, which featured skinny trousers and a corset with a long train. Amal's fans were divided, but someone immediately tweeted: "The evening has only just begun but I'm already confident that Amal Clooney will win Worst Dressed."
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker never does anything halfway, but this year the actress outdid herself in a gold Dolce & Gabbana outfit. It is worth admitting that she understood the theme of the evening absolutely correctly, and dressed accordingly. But for some, the star's heart-decorated dress and even brighter, tall, bejeweled headdress seemed too much.
Kylie Jenner
The reality star and her boyfriend Travis Scott made their Met Gala carpet debut and both wore black. Kylie preferred an Alexander Wang outfit, complementing it with sleek hair and funny glasses, but fans of the outrageous star were not delighted with the outfit, which was very simple for such an event.
Doutzen Kroes
The supermodel looked very attractive in her ombre dress, made by New York brand Sies Marjan, but too dull for the evening. Along with other stars who wowed in religious-themed outfits, Doutzen looked like she wasn't attending a supermodel party.
Shailene Woodley
Meghan Markle is at the epicenter of a scandal: the duchess is accused of plagiarizing a Vogue cover
Today, July 29, the network announced the release of a special issue of British Vogue. The gloss attracted considerable attention from the British, because its creator was the Duchess of Sussex. For the main photo, Meghan Markle invited famous models...
Shailene Woodley definitely turned heads in her Ralph Lauren outfit. But people looked at her rather with bewilderment. It looked like she mixed up the theme of the party and dressed according to the 2016 theme - "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" - dedicated to technology. The actress paired the metallic dress (allegedly it took 50 hours to make) with high boots.
Eiza Gonzalez
The Baby Driver star is obviously also haunted by the laurels of Disney villainess. For some reason, a black shiny dress with long latex gloves, a white cape and three silver tears on the cheek were least associated with the theme of the evening.
Katy Perry
Leaving her boyfriend Orlando Bloom at home, Katy Perry dressed up as an angel and went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the evening. As she walked down the path, Katie looked as if she was about to lose all the feathers that were part of her costume. We hope the outfit at least wasn't too heavy.
Makeup and hairstyle
The Met Gala is an evening where it's all about costumes, but when creating a complete look, you can't forget about makeup and hair. Unsuccessful styling can ruin the entire effect of the outfit. Let's now see which celebrity managed to highlight both their own beauty and the chosen image.
Jasmine Sanders
With her stunning floral hairstyle, Jasmine Sanders created one of the best looks of the night. Of course, to repeat this at home, you will need someone's help, but it is not so difficult to do.
Lily Collins
Lily created a successful Madonna look with the help of proper makeup, headdress and voluminous earrings. Wine-colored lipstick and well-defined eyebrows create a mature look that really suits a girl.
Kate Bosworth
Kate has found such an ideal makeup base that her look needs nothing more than a couple of touches of blush. To replicate this look at home, ditch the defined lines and focus on glowing skin and blush.
Cynthia Erivo
Eyebrows decorated with stones will become a trend this year, there is no doubt. Like Cynthia, don't be afraid to go beyond your natural brows. Use jewelry in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Rihanna
You probably don't want to try on a papal headdress, but smokey eye makeup has failed few people. The lip shading effect is another trend that can be easily replicated using a lip liner and a slightly lighter lipstick.
Katherine Langford

Cara Delevingne
The Costume Institute Ball is perhaps the last Hollywood event where real fashion has a place. Fashion that does not chase profit and followers, but that reflects pure art. With a rotating theme, the Met Gala each year gives audiences the opportunity to experience amazing performances.
In anticipation of the results of the stars and designers’ reading of the connection between fashion and Catholicism (the theme of the upcoming event), we recall the most “loud” of them, which made the May gala evening unlike others.
Cher in Bob Mackie, 1974
The first Met Gala took place back in 1948, but its modern history begins in 1974. It was then that it transformed from a gathering of housewives into a luxurious Ball and the most anticipated event in the industry, preceding a thematic exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its organization became the responsibility of American Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, who added three zeros to the original price of admission tickets, invited celebrities to participate and introduced special rules for visiting.
One of the first events was dedicated to “romantic and glamorous Hollywood,” which obliged guests to come in all the most glittering and expensive.
Singer Cher wore an absolutely transparent dress with embroidery for the occasion, trimmed with snow-white feathers on the hem and sleeves. Its author was designer Bob Mackie, who later created even more resonant images for Cher. Although they went down in history, they did not have any impact on the development of fashion, while the “naked” dress from the Met Gala was repeated by his colleagues more than once - for example, Peter Dundas in 2015. As a kind of flashback, Kim Kardashian appeared on the red carpet of the Ball, looking no worse in Cher’s attire. Roberto Cavalli's interpretation was included in the top best dresses of the evening and, together with the others, brought back the trend for naked beauty, which began precisely with the eccentric appearances of the 70s.
Princess Diana in Christian Dior, 1996
The 1996 celebration was dedicated to the collections of Christian Dior and gathered devoted fans of his talent. The then designer of the brand, John Galliano, came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the arm of Diana Spencer, divorced from an English prince, but who had not lost the love and recognition of the public. For her, Galliano sewed a rather modest outfit in lingerie style, which, of course, stood out from the rest. In addition to it, Diana picked out the legendary necklace made of seven strands of pearls and sapphire, as well as the signature “Lady Dior” handbag, which was worn in different variations by other Met Gala guests.
That day, Diana was showered with compliments and outshone those present in pompous outfits.
This was her last stunning appearance: just six months later, the ex-princess died in a car accident. Galliano did not have time to bring to life so many sketches for his main client! But not without the help of her blue silk dress, he acquired new ones and secured a strong place in the history of Christian Dior.
Amber Valletta in John Galliano, 2004
It was this outfit that rocked the Met Gala boat and steered it toward outlandish design feats that would have been out of place at the Oscars.
In addition to working in the French house, Galliano worked on his own brand, where he created what he wanted, without adhering to the canons of the historical DNA. He demonstrated all his madness at Haute Couture Week and Met Gala, which did not set any restrictions, but, on the contrary, “threw up” interesting ideas for creativity. Cubism, Orientalism, the style of Jacqueline Kennedy or “women as deities” - Galliano had an answer to everything, attracting full attention of the press to his protégé. In 2004, when the theme of the Ball became the 18th century, he made for Amber Valletta a multi-layered hoop skirt that exuded John's favorite theatricality. A Maggie Norris corset and a high powdered wig suited her perfectly, making the model a representative of the Enlightenment. It was this outfit that rocked the Met Gala boat and steered it toward outlandish design feats that would have been out of place at the Oscars but resonated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen, 2006
A good tradition at the Costume Institute Ball was the appearance of stars along with the creators of their images. Knowing that this would create considerable excitement, they went out together with non-public characters, and sometimes even dressed in the same manner as them. So, Sarah Jessica Parker killed two birds with one stone in 2006, persuading introvert Alexander McQueen to accompany her on the red carpet and add tartan to her tuxedo - exactly the same as on her dress. The theme of the Met Gala back then was “Anglomania,” and the Parker-McQueen tandem followed the dress code perfectly. According to the actress, this is the main goal of the event, which makes the beauty and tendentiousness of the outfit secondary. Although the latter was also present in Sarah’s performance: asymmetry was just coming into fashion in the 2000s and seemed something completely unusual.
Daphne Guinness in Alexander McQueen, 2010
The next time, Alexander McQueen appeared at the Ball as inspiration, not having time to live to see the topic dedicated to him personally. He hanged himself in the wardrobe of his own apartment 9 days after his mother’s death. Museum curator Andrew Bolton quickly organized the “Savage Beauty” exhibition, which reflected the versatility of the designer’s talent. In three months, it was watched by 660 thousand people, who had previously closely watched how McQueen’s best works “landed” on his friends and partners.
“You can easily find out where Daphne is. We need to follow the trail of feathers that fell from her dress.”
Daphne Guinness, Alexander's favorite muse and the only woman who managed to walk in Alien shoes, came to the Metropolitan Ball in a cream dress made of feathers and fringe. The heiress to the brewing empire put it on right in the window of the Barneys department store in the presence of buyers and the media, who pointed their cameras at her even before the event began. “You can easily find out where Daphne is. You need to follow the path of feathers that fell from her dress,” said Valentino, emphasizing the originality of the British Cruella de Vil and McQueen’s creations, which, it seems, suited no one as well as her.
Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs, 2013
“Punk: from chaos to Haute Couture” was the theme of the Costume Institute exhibition and the 68th Met Gala. His guests got the chance to indulge and present grunge in all its glory: with spikes, leather boots and smoky eyes. Miley Cyrus, who was just at that time transforming from Hannah Montana into the main New York freak, came out of the limousine in a mesh dress from Marc Jacobs - not as revealing as we often see it at shows, but also very eccentric. The emphasis in the image was on the singer’s short hair, raised into a typical punk mohawk: with it, Miley resembled a girl from the 90s, a devoted fan of Kurt Cobain. This outfit became her ticket to the pages of the world press, which discussed the mesh more than any other outfit. Thus, Marc Jacobs saw Cyrus’s dramatic side even among the abundance of protruding tongues and obscene gestures.
Beyoncé in Givenchy, 2015
“I just want to post beautiful photos on Instagram and enjoy this celebration.”
In 2015, Beyoncé distinguished herself by being nicknamed the queen of the evening, even despite the singer’s non-compliance with its theme. The ponytail, platform shoes and an absolutely transparent dress, which covered only the most piquant parts of the plump star, had nothing in common with “Through the Looking Glass of China,” which obliged guests to reflect the culture of the eastern country in their dresses. But the R"n"B diva, who makes a splash at almost every Met Gala, was forgiven for this “mistake”: her appearance at the Ball was so brilliant that it made visitors forget about the exhibition and about other women who tried in every way to grab a piece of fame Beyonce. “I don’t care about the theme, I don’t care about the red carpet. I just want to post beautiful photos on Instagram and enjoy this celebration,” fans wrote on social networks, as if voicing Mrs. Knowles-Carter’s thoughts.
Sarah Jessica Parker in H&M, 2015
Sarah Jessica Parker, who not only followed the designated style of the Ball, but also created her own dress in collaboration with H&M, was not criticized only by the lazy. In Internet memes, cartoon characters, frying pans with food, and even the hem of Rihanna’s dress, turned into a giant omelet, were “sat” on her “flaming” Philip Treacy hat. However, Sarah was ready for such a reaction, telling reporters that she takes risks at the Metropolitan Ball every year.
In all this fuss, no one noticed that her poppy outfit with a high slit was made from eco-friendly raw materials: the scraps that intersect the fabric are remnants from other, no longer wearable clothes, to which the actress gave new life in the spotlight. “I was so inspired by the vision behind the H&M Conscious Collection that I wanted to personally participate in the costume design process,” Parker shared.
Rihanna in Guo Pei Couture, 2015
Rihanna, the only guest at “Through the Looking Glass of China” wearing a dress from a Chinese designer, also suffered from censure from fashion critics that year. She walked up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art like a real empress: wearing a crown, a necklace and all in yellow, which in Asia is considered the color of royalty and grandeur. This image was prepared for the singer over the course of two years: from the moment she saw Guo Pei’s work on the Internet until the final fitting before the Ball. This outfit was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the genius of Chinese designers who are not limited to producing fake Gucci and Louis Vuitton and are capable of creating real objects of art.
“I’m in love with this dress, but the train is crazy,” Rihanna admitted. “I can’t walk in it without help, but it’s worth it!”
However, not everyone appreciated the girl’s efforts and instead of the expected pleasant reviews, they gave the performance caustic comparisons with SpongeBob, Big Bird from Sesame Street, and even a pancake with condensed milk.
Karlie Kloss
After such disappointing reviews, Met Gala regulars either stayed home (especially since ticket prices rose to $25,000) or dressed more casually—quite minimalist and often in monochrome. In 2016, it was decided to rely on the technology of the suit and its ability to change at the snap of a finger. Don't like fur? – Click, and he’s gone! Didn't like the neckline? - Let's cover it with a jacket! The theme was conducive to such experiments and sounded like “Hand Labor versus Machine,” demonstrating the endless possibilities of modern fashion.
Karlie Kloss's dress—classic, white, with a cute bow—looked unremarkable until a few minutes later it turned into a sexy outfit with multiple cutouts. At the after party, it completely lost its length, exposing the model’s legs, and was also complemented by an architectural jacket. Carly remained unperturbed all this time, as if transformers at an event of this rank were a common thing. In fact, they were adopted only after Brandon Maxwell, whose popularity fell precisely after this release of the star customer.
Claire Danes in a Zac Posen dress, 2016
Another miracle of technology was presented at the Met Gala 2016 by Zac Posen, who created a real Cinderella dress for Claire Danes. The designer sewed 30 packs of small batteries into his organza petticoat, which, in dim lighting, made the outfit shimmer and shimmer fabulously. That evening they took pictures with Claire as if she were a museum exhibit - so unusual and new was what she wore. And while there were plenty of talking points around her - from Kanye West with blue lenses to Madonna with a bare loin - this Ball will be remembered solely for her attire, which proved that the future of fashion is already here.
