Where is the most lightning on earth? The biggest lightning in the world
A better understanding of thunderstorm activity around the world allows policymakers, government agencies and other stakeholders to make more informed decisions related to weather and climate. This is why leading experts pay so much attention to storm activity studies. Lightning is monitored even from space - this data on the places where the largest lightning strikes in the world occurs comes from NASA.
El Tarra
Colombia
138 lightning flashes per square kilometer per year
Lightning is more common at high altitudes and near the equator, which explains why thousands of hunters flock to Colombia's El Tara every year for the majestic spectacle.
Dagar
Pakistan
141 lightning flashes per square kilometer per year
Dagar, a mountainous part of Pakistan near the Afghan border, attracts so many thunderstorms because it lies at the intersection of the western reaches of the Himalayas and the Indus River plain.
sake
143 lightning flashes per square kilometer per year
Africa is a hot place and the lightning knows it. Giant lakes located in the African Rift Valley are a real bait for firestorms.
Caceres
Colombia
Caceres, on the Cauca River, receives more lightning than any other part of Colombia.
Campene
Democratic Republic of the Congo
176 lightning flashes per square kilometer per year
Believe me, lightning can strike the same place twice. The Empire State Building gets hit about 20 times a year. Campene - about thirty a month.
Cabaret
Democratic Republic of the Congo
205 lightning flashes per square kilometer per year
The Great Lakes of Africa are perhaps the most attractive place for lightning in the world. Cabaret remains the epicenter of lightning activity.
Lake Maracaibo
Venezuela
232 lightning flashes per square kilometer per year
This brackish bay in the Caribbean is the place that can make you believe in the wrath of Zeus. An ideal place for lightning to form, turning into a real storm pass on autumn nights. When warm air from the surface of the water meets cold winds from the Andes, what locals call the Endless Storm Catatumbo occurs.

Lake Maracaibo
Venezuela 232 lightning flashes per square kilometer per year This brackish bay in the Caribbean is the kind of place that can make you believe in the wrath of Zeus. An ideal place for lightning to form, turning into a real storm pass on autumn nights. When warm air from the surface of the water meets cold winds from the Andes, what locals call the Endless Storm Catatumbo occurs.An atmospheric phenomenon in which electrical discharges - lightning - accompanied by thunder occur inside clouds or between a cloud and the earth's surface. As a rule, a thunderstorm forms in powerful cumulonimbus clouds and is associated with heavy rain, hail and strong winds.
Thunderstorms are one of the most dangerous natural phenomena for humans: in terms of the number of registered deaths, only floods lead to greater human losses.
A thunderstorm is one of the most dangerous natural phenomena. People struck by lightning survive only in isolated cases.
There are approximately 1,500 thunderstorms operating on the planet at the same time. The intensity of the discharges is estimated at a hundred lightning strikes per second.
Development of a thunderstorm How does it happen? A thundercloud only forms under certain conditions. The presence of upward flows of moisture is mandatory, and there must be a structure where one fraction of the particles is in an icy state, the other in a liquid state. Convection that will lead to the development of a thunderstorm will occur in several cases. Uneven heating of surface layers. For example, over water with a significant temperature difference. Over large cities, thunderstorm intensity will be slightly stronger than in the surrounding areas. When cold air displaces warm air. The frontal convention often develops simultaneously with cover clouds and nimbostratus clouds. When air rises in mountain ranges. Even low elevations can lead to increased cloud formations. This is forced convection. Any thundercloud, regardless of its type, necessarily goes through three stages: cumulus, maturity, and decay.
The strongest thunderstorms in the world
One of the most common atmospheric phenomena. Storm. It appears as a result of electrical discharges - lightning - between the earth's surface and clouds. And, as a rule, it is accompanied by thunder, heavy rain, wind or hail. The strongest thunderstorm has occurred in every person's life. Therefore, many people have an idea what it is. One way or another, a thunderstorm is a beautiful and at the same time very frightening sight. And almost everyone knows that this is also one of the most dangerous natural phenomena for humans. The number of reported deaths speaks for itself: only floods can cause greater losses.
The most beautiful thunderstorm in the world
A unique natural phenomenon that will shock everyone with its beauty can be found in Catatumbo.
It is located above the mouth of the river of the same name, which flows into Lake Maracaibo in northwestern Venezuela. The so-called Catatumbo lightning occurs in this place. This natural phenomenon is characterized by bright and frequent flashes of lightning over a fairly small area. This miracle of nature is observed for 140 days a year. The end of the world usually lasts at least ten hours. During this period of time, the skies are illuminated by lightning at least fifteen thousand times. And sometimes the frequency of flashes can reach up to 2800 per hour. Therefore, we can say that this is exactly the place where the strongest thunderstorm in the world occurs.
The strongest thunderstorm in the world Lightning can be seen literally everywhere. They are born in almost every corner of the planet. But, as observations show, they have their favorite places. Researchers, based on weather satellite data, say lightning most often appears over land. And this despite the fact that it occupies only a quarter of the Earth's surface. The strongest thunderstorms can be seen in several places. The champions in the number of lightning strikes are the tropics. However, a large number of lightning discharges can be found during mid-latitude storms. The Medveditskaya Ridge is a place where thunderstorms most often occur in Russia. The most thunderous place on the planet is called Bagor. It is an Indonesian city on the island of Java in Southeast Asia. There are thunderstorms here almost every day, namely 322 days a year. The most severe thunderstorm in the world is possible in the city of Tororo in Uganda, where there are 251 thunderstorm days a year. Places where thunderstorms and lightning are not uncommon in Russia, in particular, the most thunderstorm place in the country is the Medveditskaya ridge in the Volga region. This territory has long been considered an anomalous zone. However, it is impossible to say for certain where the most powerful thunderstorms were recorded. Everyone has their own case when it seemed to him that the heavens opened up and the strongest thunderstorm struck. But you can say for sure where the most beautiful thunderstorms in the world are.
DEADLY THUNDERSTORMS
The thunderstorms that hit Moscow in recent days have become a real test for Muscovites.
In Moscow, due to a severe thunderstorm, the rails in the direction of the Aeroexpress train, which carries passengers from Savyolovsky Station to Sheremetyevo-2 Airport, were de-energized. Dozens of passengers were late for flights. On Thursday, at 20.00, there was a power failure due to a thunderstorm on the Lobnya - Sheremetyevo section. However, often an encounter with lightning can turn into a much more terrible tragedy. According to utility services, a total of 33 trees were knocked down in Moscow due to the thunderstorm, most of which fell in the southeast and southwest of the capital. A strong wind knocked over an old tree more than ten meters high onto two foreign cars in the Peredelkino area, near the railway crossing on 6th Lazenki Street. There were people in the cars at the time of the accident, one of them was injured.
Muscovites suffer not only from squally winds that uproot trees, but also from lightning strikes. On July 19, with a diagnosis of “condition after being struck by lightning, burn of the chest, cervical spine, burn wound of the foot,” a guest of the capital, Novgorodian Alexander Mamaenko, was taken to the hospital. He was saved from death... by a gold chain. Lightning struck it, melting the metal. Alexander was immediately admitted to intensive care. He's on a drip there
came to his senses. On July 20, Muscovite Marina Bestina was struck by lightning. When she tried to dial the entrance door code, lightning struck the intercom. Marina was taken to the hospital with burns. 30-year-old janitor Tolgan Zhurdaev also became a victim of the thunderstorm. He tried to hide from the sudden downpour under a tree. The lightning strike was so strong that the young man died on the spot from a powerful electrical discharge.
Even an ordinary mobile phone can cause death. Near Samara, a 24-year-old guy died from a lightning strike that struck a mobile phone during a conversation. Three people died on the Neftekamsk beach during a thunderstorm. Lightning struck the ringing phone of 26-year-old Marina Sadykova. This call cost her and two children who were nearby their lives. In addition, cases of suicide during thunderstorms have become more frequent.
Fatal errors leading to death during a thunderstorm
REN TV offers advice to those who want to avoid encountering an electrical discharge during a disaster.
Moscow has declared an “orange” level of danger due to bad weather, and in the coming days, residents of the capital will either languish in the heat or hide from the rumble of thunder and flashes of lightning. Early Monday morning, a man died during a severe thunderstorm after he decided to wait out the storm under a tree while talking on his cell phone. REN TV has collected tips on what not to do during a thunderstorm to avoid being struck by an electric shock.
A thunderstorm is one of the most dangerous natural phenomena for humans. An instant lightning strike often leads to death, but if the emergency ends successfully, it can cause paralysis, deep loss of consciousness, respiratory and cardiac arrest.
Lightning is an electrical discharge of high voltage, enormous current, high power and very high temperature that occurs in nature. Few people know that there are many types of lightning, for example, there is linear and ball lightning, and there are also sprites, jets and even elves. The closer a thunderstorm is to you, the more dangerous it is. If thunder and lightning follow each other with a minimum interval, then the thunderstorm is just above you. It is easy to find out the epicenter of a thunderstorm - you just need to count how much time passes between the flash and the clap of thunder. So, a second gap between these phenomena means that the thunderstorm is 300-400 meters away from you.
If you are at home during a thunderstorm, you should not leave electrical appliances on, be near open windows, keep balcony doors and vents open, or touch metal plumbing fixtures.
If the elements find you on the street, then it is strictly forbidden to be near tall trees and power lines, hold metal objects in your hands, be it keys, fishing rods or umbrellas, touch metal structures or come close to them, wear metal accessories, jewelry and , of course, talk on the phone.
If during a thunderstorm you are traveling in transport, be it a car or public transport, then you should not touch metal structures or handrails. It is not recommended to park near metal structures, trees or power lines.
It is known that the higher the air temperature, the stronger the thunderstorm, which is why summer thunderstorms are larger than spring thunderstorms. In summer, during a thunderstorm, several dozen lightning bolts can form, and the highest points in the area, be it a mountain top, a tree or a pipe, become the point of their impact. The best recommendation during a thunderstorm is to try to wait it out indoors: at home, in an office or in a store.
Let us remind you that during the morning thunderstorm on July 27, two cases of lightning striking people were recorded. One, which resulted in the death of a man, occurred on Kremenchugskaya Street in the south-west of the capital, while on the territory of the Setun River Valley natural reserve an electric discharge hit a woman who survived. The victim was diagnosed with electrical trauma and burns and is receiving the necessary assistance.
Incidents: Thunderstorm with death
July 03, 2013
The past weekend was marked by thunder and death for Muscovites. Bad weather on the streets of the capital caused four hundred trees to fall. Falling giants have injured people. Today, the first reports of the death of victims were received.
On Sunday, Moscow became the scene of a real natural disaster. Almost a month's worth of precipitation fell in the city in one day, and strong winds knocked down trees. Water flooded underground passages and seeped into subway lobbies. Due to the thunderstorm, transport services in the city were suspended. Warnings were issued on radio and television channels about the impending cyclone, asking people to refrain from going out. Nevertheless, the elements found many Muscovites there.
On Monday, emergency crews in the capital cleared the streets of rubble and helped the wounded get to the nearest medical facilities. On Tuesday, the capital authorities announced that all consequences of the incident had been eliminated. The city can fall peacefully.
Heaviest precipitation was also observed in the Moscow region, where, according to various estimates, from 40% to 90% of the monthly norm fell. In the west of the capital and the region there was heavy hail for half a day. Many houses suffered glass damage. Utility services are still receiving requests from citizens complaining about clogged drain grates and power outages. In total, 150 teams were deployed to the streets of Moscow to clean up the city and eliminate the consequences of the natural disaster. The most damage was recorded in the Western Administrative District and the Central Administrative District. According to reports from the cleaning crews, it was in the west of the capital that the work was most difficult. It was this part of the city that received the heaviest blow from the storm, and it was here that most of the trees were knocked down. One of them fell on a 25-year-old girl, crushing her bones, the Moscow police department reported. In the south of Moscow, a young girl and a pensioner were injured by falling trees. There are deep puddles on all the streets of the city, which are expected to dry only by the end of the week. It's time to take the rubber boots out of the closets. There are knee-deep puddles on Old Arbat and Kutuzovsky Prospekt. Cars lose their license plates in puddles. All that remains for unfortunate motorists is to wait for the water to recede to pick up their license plate.
If you are indoors:
During a thunderstorm, turn off all household electrical appliances in the house and do not use a regular telephone, do not stand near windows and doors, and do not touch water taps;
Windows must be closed to avoid attracting ball lightning.
If you are outside:
You cannot hide under tall trees; it is better to move 30-40 meters away from them. The likelihood of lightning striking a particular tree is directly proportional to its height;
Mobile phone must be turned off;
Do not open your umbrella over you (!), due to the presence of many metal parts, it can become a kind of antenna and attract lightning;
A car is a safe haven, and during a thunderstorm it is better not to leave it, stop, close the windows, lower the car antenna;
Bicycles and motorcycles, on the contrary, are potentially dangerous. They need to be laid on the ground and moved away at least 10 meters.
Lightning is a dream of happiness and prosperity - albeit short-lived.
If you see lightning above your head, joy and lasting income are ahead.
If lightning illuminates an object near you, good luck awaits your friend.
But black lightning among dark clouds is a sign that sorrows and difficulties will haunt you for quite a long time. After such a dream, businessmen need to fully concentrate on their business, and women need to vigilantly monitor what is happening in the family.
There are other interpretations of dreams about lightning. For example, if you see flashing lightning in a dream, know that something will soon happen in your life that you did not expect. Most likely, this is a new acquaintance, and you and this person will spend a lot of time together. You won’t see him right away, but then you will understand that this is “the hero of your novel.”
If in a dream you stand in the place where lightning struck, then soon a new love will arise in your soul. It will probably be passion at first sight.
If lightning struck where your loved one was, then perhaps that person may have some problems in the near future. You can cause these troubles, so be careful how you behave - then complications can be avoided.
If in your dream lightning destroyed an object, then your future love will become so all-consuming that people close to you may suffer from it.
Nostradamus believed that a bright flash of lightning in a dream means receiving unexpected news from afar. The fortuneteller interpreted such dreams as follows.
If you were hit by lightning in a dream, then try to show more restraint in reality, as they will try to drag you into a conflict.
Seeing people die from burns from ball lightning in a dream is a bad sign.
A dream in which you saw a flash of lightning and heard a clap of thunder is a warning. Perhaps you should reconsider your positions in life.
The Bulgarian soothsayer Vanga considered lightning a sign of destruction and misfortune. She said that lightning in the sky symbolizes fires, which will not only cause destruction and leave many homeless, but also bring death and respiratory diseases.
And in D. Loff’s dream book it is said: “The image of lightning in a dream is interpreted in different ways. Some people like zippers - and don't mind this element. Others are intimidated by their strength and unpredictability. However, there are many other manifestations of power that deserve attention.
You can control lightning - this is an attempt to cope with real problems. In this case, lightning is a valuable weapon in the fight against disappointment and relapse. Sweep them out of your way with lightning speed.
Lightning also serves as a warning.
If you are afraid of it in life, the lightning effect can be caused by a person nearby or a building you enter. In this form, the mind provides a visual warning. In this there is the presence of an element of punishment, divine wrath, which manifests itself in the form of lightning bolts and is personified by the Greek god Zeus and the Nordic god Thor.”

Catatumbo Lightning or Catatumbo Lightning is a unique place on the planet, which is located in the small fishing village of Ologa in Venezuela and is a real natural phenomenon. The sky above this place has more lightning than anywhere else on the planet, and it happens almost daily. This year, Catatumbo Lightning entered the Guinness Book of Records, becoming the record holder for the number of lightning strikes per square meter in a year (250), displacing Kifuke in the Congo from its pedestal. Reuters photographer Jorge Silva traveled to the site of a thousand lightning strikes to look at this unique phenomenon.

1. “At first it was completely calm. Lightning strikes here almost every night. After a long wait, I went to sleep in the hammock, thinking it would be one of those nights when there would be no lightning,” the photographer writes. (Photo: Jorge Silva/REUTERS).
The photographer was accompanied through the village by a guide named Nataly, who grew up in this place. She knew all about the local weather and lightning. According to the girl, some local residents have some kind of “special relationship” with this atmospheric phenomenon. At first the photographer thought that he was unlucky with the weather; the village was quiet. As it turned out, it was only quiet at the beginning.
