Irina Rodnina is perhaps the main legend of Soviet figure skating. She is the only one who managed to win three Olympics. And one of the few who, after actually emigrating to the United States, returned to Russia and became a successful politician. In her autobiographical book “The Tear of a Champion,” published by the Vremya publishing house, Rodnina writes about her victories, her intrigues in figure skating, and her relationship with coaches.
“TATYANA ANATOLYEVNA LOVES AND HITS BACKHAND”
There are several professions in figure skating. There is a choreographer. This is what Elena Anatolyevna Tchaikovskaya and Tatyana Anatolyevna Tarasova successfully embodied for many years. There is another profession - a coach. Among the coaches I can include Viktor Kudryavtsev, Eduard Pliner, Zhuk and Igor Moskvin. These people are engaged in the “technical equipment” of the athlete. Everything that concerns setting up technique has little to do with Tarasova (I can say for sure, because I trained with her). Another thing is that Tarasova has absolutely extraordinary thinking. If we all, ordinary people, think straight, then she will definitely try to the right or left. Or maybe even back.
Tatyana Anatolyevna decides everything emotionally. She can only work with those who believe her infinitely. If doubts arise on the part of the athlete - you still need to prove to me that it should be done this way and not another - then the situation can develop into a big conflict, and, as a rule, ends in a break in the relationship. She likes to backhand and also hits backhand. But she certainly has what we call talent. And due to her sixth sense, her incredible abilities, she is forgiven a lot that in normal life, ordinary people would probably never be forgiven.
Elena Anatolyevna is a deeper person than Tarasova, although, like any woman, you cannot deny her emotions. For example, I made the following conclusion for myself: I don’t want to quarrel with Tarasova or be friends. Because swearing is indecent and undignified. After all, we lived next to each other for so many years. It's simply impossible to be friends. And friendship is mutual respect, acceptance in the person with whom you are friends not only of his strengths, but also of his weaknesses. Of course, Tatyana Anatolyevna tries to be a opportunistic person, but this is common behavior in our world. When they say that you can’t entice athletes like that, I don’t agree with that. I understand that a period is coming when we ourselves leave. For example, I came to Tarasova myself. Nobody lured me away.
Tatyana Anatolyevna knows how to speak beautifully, knows how to seduce. We, athletes, don’t have enough kind words, but the coach who leads his athlete, he keeps repeating: this must be done, this must be done, here you gave up, here you went wrong... Tatyana Anatolyevna is almost the only one who , as much as possible, admires you... And in our world, if you receive such daily encouragement, it gives you even more strength. Tatyana Anatolyevna had a motto for many years: let's compliment each other. And I don’t know how to give compliments at all, and, naturally, our relationship was purely business.

“I DON’T BELIEVE THAT ULANOV DID INJURY ME ON PURPOSE”
Immediately after the 1972 Olympic Games, Alexey Ulanov (Olympic champion, Rodnina’s first partner - Ed.) got married. I don’t know how in St. Petersburg they were able to paint him and Lyuda (Smirnova, famous figure skater, Olympic bronze medalist. - Ed.), he was a Muscovite by registration.
At the World Championships in Calgary, that is, a couple of months after the Olympics, a really difficult situation developed. Zhuk (Rodnina’s first coach - Ed.) simply couldn’t see him, but I quietly got to the bottom of him. Ulanov did not want to listen to Zhuk, Stas spoke to him through clenched teeth, so Piseev (former head of the Figure Skating Federation. - Ed.) was always with us...
What I mean is that Zhuk somewhere expressed the opinion that the injury that happened to me in Calgary was not accidental. It’s as if Ulanov threw me on the ice on purpose to give his wife such a gift - to give her the opportunity to win the world championship. I do not believe. And I will never believe this. But the people perceived it that way. In general, in the eyes of the Soviet people, I was an abandoned, and also a badly beaten girl. A huge amount of negativity poured out on Ulanov...
I think that Zhuk himself whipped up more passion. It’s amazing that from the very first moment, when Ulanov and Smirnova began performing together, I never thought that they could be our competitors.
Now, many years later, we have a very good relationship. We are always glad to meet you. And then... anything could happen. We were preparing for the festival of youth and students in the GDR... There was no ice anywhere in Moscow in the summer, and we trained for several days in Voskresensk. The house... was being renovated, the water supply and heating pipes were being replaced. And there were holes between all the rooms. Therefore, everything that happened in the lower and upper rooms could be heard. And Lelik is talking there: “I exchanged my medals for bed with you.” And Luda sniffs something in response. Then during training I say: “Lyuda, are you crazy? - We really treated each other normally. - Why are you allowing him! Pack your money and get away from this idiot." He told me: “What are you teaching my partner?” I told him: “I’m teaching her how to treat you, a fool.”

"STANISLAV ZHUK DROPPED FROM THE COACHING PROCESS DUE TO DRUNKENNESS"
Then (during the 1969 World Cup - Ed.) I saw Zhuk drink for the first time. I've never noticed anything like this before. It seemed that he was continuing to celebrate our victory. The head of the delegation was appointed director of the Luzhniki Sports Palace, Anna Ilyinichna Sinilkina. We did not live in the official championship hotel, but in some kind of boarding house. Four people in a room. There was no money to pay for ice, and for the first two days we just walked. On the second day, Anna Ilyinichna, realizing that we were starting to fade, took a certain amount (she had some money for the team) and took us all to watch the film “Romeo and Juliet” by Zeffirelli. We are sitting in the hall, all in tears and snot, the film is shown in Italian with English subtitles. We go out, and Stasik, who was a little tipsy, says: “What a cool story. But why did they come up with such a bad ending?” Without understanding it, I tell him: “Stanislav Alekseevich, this is Shakespeare.” And I wipe away my tears and sniffle. He says: “What I’m saying is, the plot is great, why such an ending? Look, everyone is crying." - “But this is Shakespeare! "Romeo and Juliet"!" He again: “That’s what I’m saying, great plot.”
Until that evening, I believed him completely unconditionally, believed everything he said, no matter what he did, carried out all his instructions. Once he told me: “My hands are weak.” I echo: “Weak.” - “So you don’t swing enough.” Me: “No, I complete all the tasks.” Beetle: “I woke up this morning, fell on the floor and did twenty push-ups.” And I actually fell out of bed onto the floor and did push-ups. Next: “Weak ankle.” I repeat: “Weak.” - “Do you go down the escalator in the subway?” I say: “I’m going down.” He orders: “We must run upstairs.” And I, with my bag, pushing everyone aside, ran along the escalator like crazy. And then, perhaps for the first time, I suddenly realized that he was not a god. I didn't even laugh at him. I couldn't imagine how to react to the fact that my teacher didn't know Shakespeare.
He continued to celebrate: the day, the second, the third. Anna Ilyinichna makes a decision: to take Zhuk’s clothes away. We have a training session at the main skating rink late in the evening. We ride with Ulanov slowly, quietly. And suddenly we see how, in the dark, because the skating rink was half-lit, the square Stanislav Alekseevich appears in the clothes of the thin Slava Zhigalin. We're starting to get hysterical. Then Anna Ilyinichna saw the Beetle and literally shooed him out of the arena. She also told him afterward: don’t come to training like this!
The next day we have an early morning roll-out. There, near the skating rink, there was a bench in the shape of a skate and on it an inscription in memory of the American figure skating team that crashed in the year sixty-one. We leave the Palace and see that the Beetle is knee-deep in the lake. I told him: “What are you doing, Stanislav Alekseevich?” He, naturally, a little tipsy, answers me: “I’m going to drown myself.” And he stands knee-deep in water. Leshka gives me his bag, rolls up his trousers and pulls the Beetle out of this lake. He came to his senses for the competition. It's hard to talk about it, but it was the first time I saw that he could drink to such an extent. When his daughter was born, or rather, as soon as he took Nina to the maternity hospital, he immediately ran to training. And he left a friend at the maternity hospital to await the result. Then a friend arrived, said that a girl was born, and brought a bottle of champagne, which they drank. The most that Zhuk had was beer with fish. This is what he always loved. But in such a way that you drop out not just from the training process, but from life in general - I saw this for the first time.
"PROBABLY BELOUSOVA AND PROTOPOPOV TOOK DOPING"
Previously, the draw for the short program took place in a general gathering. And then, based on the results of the short program, we were divided into two groups: the strongest and the weakest. The weakest have already “foaled” themselves. It so happened that for several years we opened a group of the strongest. We performed first and then watched what happened next. That's why I remember any competitions well. Before Protopopov leaves, a lamp above the ice bursts with a roar. Hot glass shatters and bites into the ice. Workers come out, clean the arena, then the car drives around, cleaning the ice. The competition was delayed by five to seven minutes. Belousova and Protopopov came out. They skated very decently for about half the program, and then something terrible began. They can barely move. Maybe they suffocated, or maybe something else happened, but they barely made it to the end.
By the way, Ulanov and I also had a hard time finishing, but for a different reason. My Achilles, which was torn back in 1968, in the middle of the program, when I jumped a sheepskin coat, cracked, and there was literally nothing left of my left leg - I simply lost it.
As I walked, I said to Ulanov: “Leshka, there’s something wrong with my leg.” Lesha sympathetically (after all, a musician - he went to championships with his button accordion) suggests: “Now the slow part will end, and we will stop.” By the end of the slow part, my leg seemed to go away, we started skating further. But when we reached almost the final, Lesha told me: “My liver hurts.” And he had jaundice as a child. We just have to do the last four supports of that famous “Kalinka”. I ask Lesha: “Just hold your hands.” Leshka held his hands, and I myself jumped on him and did the splits in all directions. We managed not to stop and completed the program. However, everyone was riding there on their last legs. The skating rink in Colorado was built very quickly, within almost two weeks, because they were waiting for the arrival of the Soviet Union hockey team. The skating rink is very small. When you ride, these pipes are visible. And when you get off the ice, there is a narrow corridor at the end. To the right is the men's locker room, to the left is the women's locker room. During the free skate, two black men stood on one side of the corridor, looking like doormen, wearing gloves, with a stretcher, and the same two on the other side. When the couples left the ice, they waited for the scores, then took two or three steps towards the locker room and realized that they no longer controlled their movements. At that moment, a couple of “doormen” deftly opened the stretcher and carried you into the locker room on it. And in the locker room there was a huge square sofa, more like an ottoman. And they dumped you on it. After some time we were on it and came to our senses. Young people are faster, but Belousova was very ill for a long time. Our doctor sat next to her all night. We were not tested then, and it seems to me that they were taking some kind of drugs. This probably played a role, because often the effect of stimulants is designed only for a short period of time, and during the second part the effect of the drug began to reverse. Let me make a reservation right away - these are all just my guesses.

“Go to the skating rink, you will be happy there,” said 19-year-old Tanya Tarasova to her legendary father, the great coach Anatoly Tarasov. She had been preparing to connect her destiny with ice since she was four years old, when she was first put on skates. Her future in figure skating promised to be brilliant. Together with Georgy Proskurin, they won gold medals at the World Universiade. But while taking a lap of honor, Tarasova fell on the path leading to the podium and received an injury that was incompatible with big-time sports. She was only 19 years old. That's when her father sent her to work as a coach. At the age of 21, she already had winners of the USSR Championship. She revealed to the world a whole constellation of champions. Her students have won more than 50 gold medals. Tatyana Anatolyevna says that coaching has become the main thing in her life. Moreover, she was married three times. Her first husband was the son of a famous actor, Alexey. Despite the divorce, they have maintained friendly relations for many years. Thanks to him, she became friends with the great, his death was a heavy blow for her. Tarasova never talks about her second marriage: it ended in a terrible tragedy for her. She found her feminine happiness with pianist Vladimir Krainev. They lived together for 33 years, until his death. During the same period, she lost her beloved sister Galina and her mother. Who helped her survive these losses?
As a child, Tatyana was “hard of hearing,” so she often got it, especially from her strict mother. Despite this, Tarasova says that absolute love and happiness reigned in their house. Dad wanted a boy, so little Tatyana constantly played hockey and football. The father saw that his daughter was growing capable, so he gradually loaded her up, for example, he asked her to do half an hour of gymnastics every day. And when he found out that Tanya decided to enter GITIS, he categorically stated that there had never been and never would be artists in their family. Only after winning the fifth Olympics did Anatoly Vladimirovich appreciate his daughter’s success and say: “Hello, colleague!”
The first time Tatyana married actor Alexei Samoilov, or rather, the Sovremennik Theater, with which she fell in love. Living in this famous family was very interesting for young Tatyana. Then she met Oleg Pavlovich Tabakov, who told her: “Tanka, you keep winning and winning.” And then he wondered why “she doesn’t create her own academy.” A year later, 22-year-old Tarasova realized that it was difficult for her to live like this, this was not her regime. She can't go to bed at six in the morning; she needs to be on the ice at that time. Then Tatyana chose a profession.
Tarasova's second husband died at the age of 29. And at the age of 32 she met musician Krainev. Tatyana met him at a friend’s place. She was then returning from a fortune teller, who predicted her life with a short man would be behind a stone wall. And so it happened. They got married immediately. Anatoly Vladimirovich adored his cheerful, witty and educated son-in-law. Vladimir Krainev was the only one of Tarasova’s husbands who accepted and respected Tatyana’s work, in which she spent day and night. And Tatyana Anatolyevna prefers not to think about the children they didn’t have. “Why regret something that doesn’t exist. I help people who met on my way, I love Galya’s grandchildren. I’m always at the skating rink with the guys,” says Tatyana Anatolyevna.
After the Olympics in Calgary, Tatyana really wanted to go with her father to Canada, where he underwent hip replacement surgery. She had money for a ticket, and all of Anatoly Tarasov’s expenses were paid by the Canadian Hockey Association. But the officials did not let her go, saying that if they released the two, they would remain there. Then everything went well, and a few years later in Moscow, a professor during a routine examination diagnosed Anatoly Vladimirovich with pseudomonas sepsis. “For 63 days, the family fought for his life, Vladimir (Tatyana Anatolyevna’s husband) sent plasma from Germany, dad was getting better, and then he had a micro-stroke,” Tatyana Tarasova recalls that difficult period.
