At the end of the century, about 30 tons of such fish were caught in Russia, but already in the middle of the 20th century the catch decreased sharply, and today the volume does not exceed two tons.
The vendace lives in the northern part European Russia, mainly in lakes. The probability of catching it is especially high in Ladoga, Onega, Chudskoye and other northern reservoirs. This is explained by the fact that vendace does not tolerate heat, since it needs a large amount of oxygen, and the cooler the water, the more oxygen it contains.
In appearance, vendace is small - from 15 to 20 cm in length, sometimes there are individuals 35 cm long. Many people confuse this fish with herring and indeed, from the outside they look similar. But still vendace has its own distinctive features. Its lower jaw is longer than its upper jaw, its scales are large and its lateral lines are close to its back.

vendace
Coregomis albula L.
Despite its insignificant size, vendace is one of the most famous fish throughout northern Russia and is the subject of significant fishing there.
With the exception of smelt and smelt, vendace is the smallest of the European whitefish. Most often it is from 5 to 8 inches tall, less often from 10 to 12, and only in Lake Ladoga and Pereyaslavsky reaches a length of 13, even 14 inches, and in Pudkozero and Turostom Lake (in Olonets province) - up to a pound in weight. In its external appearance, vendace differs from other related fish in that it is more similar to a herring than all whitefish, that is, its body is very compressed from the sides and its back is less convex than its belly. Its lower jaw is noticeably longer than the upper and in the middle, like that of the whitefish, it contains a notch into which the thickened tip of the upper jaw fits; the posterior end of the maxillary bones extends further leading edge eyes, which are quite large and somewhat oblong; her tongue is lined with barely noticeable teeth, and on the anterior gill arch there are from 39 to 52 thin and long cartilaginous stamens. The scales of vendace are relatively larger than those of other true whitefish, but, however, are not always the same: for example, the Neva vendace sometimes has only 69 scales in the lateral line, and the Valdai vendace (in Lake Upshnskoye) has up to 91 scales; the number of rays in the fins is also variable.
This fish is subject to numerous modifications: not only sea vendace noticeably different from the lake one, but the latter, in turn, represents many differences, and in almost every lake vendace has its own characteristics. The main differences between these varieties are the number of scales, gill rakers, size and color. So, Neva vendace always happens small in stature, shiny silver color, and its scales are very delicate and easily fall off.
Usually vendace is very similar in color to white fish: its back is gray-blue, the sides of its body are silvery, its belly is white, its dorsal and caudal fins gray, other fins white or whitish with a blackish tip; silver eyes.
Rice. 67. Vendace.
Vendace is a purely lake fish. It lives in almost all larger lakes. northern Europe; comes across less often, and then mostly in winter, in rivers. It is found in northern Germany, Scotland, Denmark, Scandinavia, Finland and northern Russia (up to the Arctic Circle), and is also found in the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland. In our country, its main habitats are lakes: Chudskoye, Pskovskoye, Beloozero, Ladoga and especially Onega, where vendace undoubtedly occupies first place in industrial terms. In general, the lakes of the north western Russia constitute the main habitat of this fish; in Arkhangelsk and Vologda provinces, also in Siberia, it is found much less frequently and, apparently, is more often found in rivers; so, according to Hoffman, it is found in large quantities in the river. Use, and according to Danilevsky, is found in Pechora. Further into the interior of European Russia, vendace lives in some deep lakes of the Tver lips. (Seliger, Ushinskoye, Zarechye, Imolozhye, Ovilutskoye), Baltic lips. and in Lake Pereyaslavl (Pleshcheyevo), Vladimir province, where it reaches a very significant size and is found in quite large quantities. According to legend, it was transplanted here by Peter the Great, but it is very likely that it came here from Beloozero through the Sheksna, Volga and Nerl, flowing from a lake called Veksy. In addition, there are positive indications that in western Russia vendace goes even further south; so, it was delivered to Kessler from the lake. Capo, Senninsky district, Mogilev province, and is found in the lake. Drisvyaty and Drivyaty in Novoaleksandrovsky district, Kovno province, and in many lakes of Suvalki.
Like all whitefish, vendace almost always lives at depth. She loves sandy or, according to at least, clayey, always clean bottom, cold water and usually stays in holes with a depth of 5-12 fathoms or more, from where it emerges from time to time and wanders in dense flocks through the bays, often at the very surface of the water, and it is always accompanied by many seagulls, which let the fishermen know about the exit of fish from the depths.
The vendace's food consists mainly of small crustaceans - daphnia, cyclops, cypris, which crowd in myriads near the sandy shores and, according to Ber's research in Lake Pskov, gather on the surface during the day and sink closer to the bottom at night. Therefore, vendace always stays in the depths during the day, and in the evening it moves to the shores, which is why in the summer it only gets caught in the net in the evening or at night. Its stomach is constantly filled with these crustaceans, and since they are difficult to distinguish with the naked eye, many fishermen are of the widespread opinion that vendace feeds on sand. But, in addition, it also feeds on various insect larvae, worms and small mollusks.
This fish usually spawns late autumn, somewhat earlier or later, depending on the area: in the north, for example. V Lake Onega, in September and October, most often in the first half of October - from Pokrov to Demetrius, as the fishermen put it. To the south, for example. in Lake Pereyaslavl, it spawns from November 15 to December 15; the same in Lake Peipsi. Probably vendace spawns on rocks; at least in Lake Onega, the center of autumn fishing is the islands lying in the narrow part of the lake and the coastal ludas. Its caviar, compared to the caviar of other whitefish, is quite small and numerous (from 2 to 5 thousand, 2 mm in diameter, according to Beneke; the eggs are spawned at night), and this explains its huge amount in some lakes. However, in lately it begins to apparently decrease: partly from increased fishing, partly from the extraordinary proliferation of sticklebacks. This small fish, distinguished by its spines on its back, feeds exclusively on vendace eggs and juveniles in many lakes in northwestern Russia. In the last fifty years, it has appeared in countless numbers in lakes and bays of the Onega basin, where previously it was either not found at all, or was found only in very small quantities. With the increase in the number of sticklebacks, the decrease in the number of vendace coincides everywhere; in many lakes of the Onega region (Ukshozero, Konchozero, Pudkozero, Lizhmozero, in the Yalgubsky, Kondopoga, Pergubsky, Kizhi bays) the latter is almost never found and is replaced by stickleback. Proof of this harmful influence of stickleback is the fact that in lakes into which stickleback has not yet managed to penetrate, no decrease in vendace has been noticed until very recently. In addition to stickleback, vendace eggs are eaten by whitefish and other fish; the fish itself is pursued by salmon, palya and other predators. However, as for Lake Onega, Cholmuzhskaya Bay itself, the decrease in catches here seems to have occurred due to the fact that for some reason vendace began to spawn on greater depth, precisely at 14-17 fathoms, instead of the previous 7.
It should be noted that some periodicity is noticeable in the vendace catch. Both on Lake Onega and on Lake Peipus, a lot of vendace is caught for several years in a row, then its fishing can be very poor and then becomes plentiful again.
The main fishing for vendace is carried out using ordinary seines.
Largest quantity vendace is apparently caught on Lake Onega.
Fresh vendace is eaten only local residents, for which in most cases it serves as a very important source of food. Once taken out of the water, it will quickly dry out and spoil; in ice, however, it persists (Ber) for 24 hours. Therefore, vendace goes on sale either salted or smoked.
The whitefish (Coregonus nilssoni), also called dumpling in Lake Onega and Lake Kubenskoe, closely resembles vendace in size, head composition and some other characteristics. Its distribution is still little known, but it probably occurs in many areas of northern Russia. Quite close to it is a small sizhok that I found in the river. Sosva, Bogoslovsky district (on the other side of the Urals) and called Nelemka there. In Lake Onega, kilets are found only in the southern - wide part, mainly near west bank; it is not found in the northern lips and adjacent lakes, but, according to Malmgren, it is also found in Lake Ladoga. Here he is holding on great depth and goes out to more small places, from 7 to 8 fathoms deep, only in autumn, starting from the second half of August, for spawning. It never travels in such dense flocks as vendace, so it is rarely possible to capture more than 100-200 pieces in one ton. To catch it, however, mainly rather large-mesh fixed nets are used, which are called sparrow nets. Kiltz meat is bluish and not very tasty.

Vendace Scientific classification Kingdom: Animals Type ... Wikipedia
The northern fish vendace also represents the whitefish genus. It belongs to freshwater fish and is an object of commercial fishing in the northern regions of the country. Vendace is also an object of amateur and sport fishing. The most common is the White Sea vendace, which inhabits the inland waters of the Arctic Ocean and its seas. Famous for its taste qualities. Mostly consumed freshly salted.
There are several subspecies of this representative of the ichthyofauna:
- Belomorskaya;
- Siberian;
- European;
- Pereyaslovskaya.
They are all very similar to each other. Have minor external differences and different habitats.
The most common and widespread is White Sea vendace. She inhabits the rivers of the basin White Sea and lakes of the region. It is also found in rivers flowing into the Barents Sea. Local fishermen call it “herring” or “zeld”.
This is the smallest subspecies of vendace. An adult specimen reaches a size of up to 25 cm. The most common fish in catches are 14–17 cm long. average weight is 50 grams. Some individuals can reach up to 150 grams, but such underwater inhabitants are extremely rare. The lake form is even smaller.
The body of the White Sea vendace is narrow, convex in the abdominal part, the back is almost straight. The head is small, the eyes are small, the mouth is directed upward, and the upper jaw is shorter than the lower jaw. The scales are large and loosely planted. The fish is gray-blue on top, silvery on the sides, and the belly is almost white. Tail and dorsal dark, other fins light black.
European vendace- a large subspecies inhabiting closed water bodies of Finland and Northern Russia. Less common in rivers, can be found in the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia. Largest population this underwater inhabitant observed in Ladoga, Onega, Chudskoye and Pskov lakes.
European vendace can grow up to 30 cm and weighs about 300 grams. Externally it looks like a herring: a narrow elongated body, a convex lower jaw. The scales are large and loosely planted. The fish has a gray-blue color on its back, its belly is almost white, and its sides are silvery.
Pereyaslav vendace- a European form that lives only in one body of water. This is Lake Pleshcheyevo - a freshwater closed reservoir in the south Yaroslavl region. It can grow up to 35 cm in length, while weighing about 300 grams. Loves cool and oxygenated water. It is prized among fishermen because it is a rare fish.
Important! The Pereyaslav vendace is recognized as an endangered species and is listed in the Red Book.
Siberian vendace is another variety of this genus of whitefish. Found in northern regions from the White Sea to Alaska itself. Grows up to 35 cm, and Weight Limit can reach a kilogram. Fishermen also call it “Ob herring”, “saurey”. This is a semi-anadromous fish that is valuable object fishing. It is eaten smoked, salted and fresh.
Seasonal patterns in behavior
The way of life of vendace differs little from other representatives of the whitefish. This is a peaceful schooling fish that feeds mainly on animal food and migrates across the water area in search of it. It grows relatively slowly. It reaches sexual maturity only in the sixth year of life. The exception is the Pereyaslavl form, which begins to reproduce at two or three years of age.
Vendace begins in late autumn. It is relatively short-lived and goes away within two weeks. Depending on the year, the end of spawning may occur on early winter. For the process of prolongation of the genus, fish gather in large schools and occupy shallow areas with a sandy or muddy bottom, choosing underwater hills, slopes and slopes.

The vendace fish spawns in one approach at night. Moreover, the female, depending on her weight, can lay from seven to fifteen thousand eggs. A significant portion of them are eaten by perch and other representatives of local reservoirs. Fish roe has small sizes, only 1.5 mm in diameter. Their hatching occurs in the spring.
The rest of the time the vendace is feeding, moving around the reservoir in search of food. Fish are found in large numbers in delta areas and lower reaches of rivers. At the beginning of autumn she begins seasonal migrations into their upper reaches and lakes to spawn before winter.
Habitats
Vendace loves cool water, abundantly saturated with oxygen. For its habitat, it chooses areas with a clean sandy bottom, less often found on clay soil or on pebbles and stones. She will never live in stagnant bodies of water, where frostbite occurs in winter, and also avoids muddy, swampy places.
Like many whitefish, vendace prefers to spend most of its time in deep areas. The main places where you are most likely to encounter her are:
- holes and long ditches;
- with a sharp drop to depth;
- dumps and slopes distant from the shore.
In other words, vendace should initially be looked for in the most deep places reservoir
Photo 2. Pool on the river.
Periodically, vendace rises to the surface of the water in numerous flocks and wanders around the water area. Finding active fish is not difficult. On large bodies of water, its presence is indicated by seagulls circling over the location of the school. During this period it is easiest to catch this underwater inhabitant.
What does it eat?
The diet of vendace is quite varied and varies depending on the time of year. However, its main food throughout the year is small crustaceans. Daphnia, Cypris, Cyclops and others are constantly found in her stomach. During the day they are at the bottom, so our underwater inhabitant and stays deep. At night, food moves to the coastal zone sandy shores, where the schools of fish follow.
In addition to crustaceans, vendace feeds on the following food:
- shellfish;
- insect larvae;
In summer, it can collect insects that have fallen into the water, especially during short periods of their mass emergence. Then the stomachs of the caught vendace are tightly packed with various mayflies and other insects.
How to catch?
The vendace fishing season begins at the last ice. In this case, ordinary nodding or float fishing rods are used. Among the natural baits, experienced fishermen recognize the chironomid larva. Made from artificial ones in the form of a cone, diamond or drop.
Photo 3. Winter fishing rod.
By open water vendace is caught predominantly. Depending on the chosen fishing area, you have to hunt from the shore or from a boat. Baits you can use are worms, burdock larvae,... The fish bite is sharp, characterized first by a slight trembling, and then by a quick move to the side.
Many Russians are unfamiliar with vendace fish. This is due to the fact that catches have decreased significantly in recent years. It is known that commercial fishing for this species began in the fifteenth century. Two centuries later, this fish began to be called the “royal” herring. This name is due to the similarity between vendace and herring. The fish is very different delicate taste, therefore in northern countries it is often included in the diet.
Habitats and description
Not everyone knows where vendace is found. In Russia you can find 4 subspecies of fish:
- European;
- Siberian;
- Belomorskaya;
- Pereslavskaya
European vendace is sometimes called rhipus or kiltz. It lives in lakes in the north of the European part of the country. It can be found in Onega, Pskov, White and Peipsi lakes. This subspecies lives in the rivers of Finland, Sweden and Norway. It is caught in Scotland and Germany. Cold waters are known to attract vendace fish. Almost all fishermen of past centuries knew where the Pereslavl vendace is found. It can be found in Lake Pleshcheyevo. It was there that they caught fish for the royal table.
The White Sea vendace lives in northern rivers which flow into the White Sea. But the Siberian subspecies can be found in rivers located east of Pechora. This river is home to both European and Siberian species.
Vendace is very reminiscent of herring. It has an elongated and laterally compressed body. The back is covered with dark scales, and the sides and belly are light. The fins are gray in color. The lower jaw is slightly smaller than the upper jaw and has a small notch.
The size of the fish depends on its habitat. Rhipus is considered the largest subspecies. Individuals can reach a length of 35 centimeters. The weight of such fish approaches a kilogram. The White Sea vendace is considered the smallest, since individuals weigh no more than 50 g. Pereslavl and Siberian vendace are considered medium-sized fish. Most individuals weigh from 300 to 500 g. But many fishermen are happy to catch them because of their excellent taste.
Features of nutrition and reproduction
Rhipus is considered a schooling fish. Individuals spend most of their life at a depth of 10 to 25 meters. This is due to the fact that the fish prefers clean and cold water. She feels best at a water temperature of 0 to 15 degrees. When the water becomes warmer, the schools descend to depth. This species feeds on plankton. Large individuals can also be eaten small insects and crustaceans.
It is known that individuals are ready to reproduce at the age of 2 years. At this time, the body length is 7 centimeters. The fish that live in northern lakes go to spawn in September. In more warm places Spawning occurs in November and December. sea fish rises into rivers, and lake and river water goes into shallow water.
It is known that each female can lay up to 4 thousand eggs. The eggs are very small, the diameter of each egg is less than a millimeter. Despite active spawning, the population is declining. This is due to the fact that most of the caviar is eaten by smelt, which feeds on eggs and ripus fry.
Beneficial properties and harm
During the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich, vendace, which is found in Lake Pleshcheyevo, was forbidden to be caught by everyone except the royal fishermen.
