Elena Slesarenko Olympic champion biography. Rating of public activity of VIPs of the Volgograd region
Honored Master of Sports of Russia, Olympic champion, world and European champion, World and European Cup winner, Russian champion
Born on February 28, 1982 in Volgograd. Father - Sivushenko Vladimir Yurievich (born 1948), engineer. Mother - Sivushenko Tatyana Vladimirovna (born 1953), engineer.
Elena’s parents worked in Volgograd at the Akhtuba plant for more than twenty years, and then moved to the State Health Institution “Regional Center for Medical Prevention”. Elena's grandmother, Valentina Ivanovna, went to war as a nurse immediately after graduating from school. After the war, she and her husband, a career military man, who also went through the war, fought on the Kursk Bulge, lived and worked in the city of Stryi, Lviv region, where their son Vladimir, Elena’s father, was born. Later they were transferred to Stalingrad. Elena's second grandmother is Mikhailova Raisa Georgievna, a construction engineer by training. Together with her husband Vladimir Fedorovich, captain of the river fleet, they worked as hydrogeologists in the Vologda region. There they had a daughter, Tatyana, Elena's future mother, and after some time the family moved to Volgograd.
Lena was born a long-awaited and desired child. As a child, she was very active and mobile, loved to dress up and organize “demonstration performances” with dancing and gymnastic exercises. At the age of five, her mother sent Lena to the choreographic studio at the House of Officers, and a little later - to the school of arts and children's creativity in the Dzerzhinsky district of Volgograd for the choreography department, because she dreamed of seeing her light and graceful, like a ballerina. Her teacher, Irina Yuryevna Ivanova, said: “You have everything to become a star, you just have to try hard.” And Lena took her classes very responsibly, always worked in dance class with pleasure and great diligence, learned the skills of classical ballet, mastered folk and ballroom dancing, learned to play the piano, and drew. Together with her mother, she sewed concert outfits, preparing for performances on stage. However, she was drawn to sports. She went in for swimming and attended athletics training.
Having successfully graduated from art school, Lena chose athletics. This was a great merit of coach Marina Gennadievna Apanasenko, who saw in her the makings of a future champion even in preschool age. M.G. Apanasenko waited until Elena was at the right age, managed to captivate her, guide her correctly in choosing a sport, and became the young athlete’s first coach.
Elena prepared very seriously for the competition, which she called “performances,” and invited her parents and friends to them. From her first steps in sports, she wanted to become the best - first in the group, then in the region, in the country, in the world. This desire for self-improvement, an ineradicable desire to fight and win are integral qualities of Elena Slesarenko’s character, which constantly lead her to new heights. Marina Gennadievna instilled in her a love of athletics, victories, and at the very beginning of her sports career she gave her a book about the Russian jumper Tamara Bykova, writing on the first page: “To the future Olympic champion!”, not yet knowing how true these words would turn out to be.
In the 7th grade, Elena went to competitions in Lipetsk for the first time and took second place in three events (60-meter run, long jump and high jump). Jumped 1.45 meters in height, 4.45 meters in length and ran 60 meters in 8.1 seconds. The first independent trip will be remembered forever - it was from that moment that Elena Slesarenko’s sporting life began.
At Sports School No. 10 in the city of Volgograd, where Elena studied, there were passionate coaches dedicated to sports and children. They not only prepared the guys for competitions, but also took care of their rest. In city and regional competitions, Elena took 3–4 places. At first, the coaches loaded her with everything - she jumped long and high, ran different distances with hurdles, as she really loved athletics. And then a significant event happened in the athlete’s life - meeting coach B.N. Gorkov, who saw her true talent.
One day, Gorkov came to the stadium of the Institute of Physical Education with his son to warm up and saw M.G.’s group on the treadmill. Apanasenko. Boris Nikolaevich immediately drew attention to Elena, who was running 400 meters hurdles, and suggested that she try the high jump. He managed to teach the athlete to “be friends with the bar.” Previously, Lena was perplexed: “What is this?!” Some people hit the bar so hard that it jumps like crazy, but it stands. But I just need to touch it a little, and it immediately falls...” The mentor reassured: “They hit the bar from above, which means they won’t be able to jump high. You take it off on takeoff. You need to change the trajectory of movement, the angle of departure - and it will stand rooted to the spot!” Gorkov adjusted the technique, and everything worked out. Elena never looks at the bar; her flight is an instant. The calm voice of Boris Nikolaevich, his tips help to get ready, the rest happens mechanically. B.N. Gorkov knows from the first steps of the run whether the attempt will be successful, and the athlete trusts her coach unlimitedly.
Elena immediately liked the high jump. Good natural abilities, seven years of hard work in the dance class at the barre and hard work did not keep her waiting long for results: she began to win all competitions in her age group, including youth, junior and youth national championships. Only a month has passed since Boris Nikolaevich returned to coaching, and Elena has already achieved serious victories. First, in 1996 in Vladimir, at the regional junior championship, she cleared a height of 1.65 meters and took first place. Next she conquered the height of 1.70 meters at the Russian Championship, where E. Slesarenko took an honorable second place - this was a very high result and the first serious achievement in her sports career. In her hometown, at the Russian winter championship, Elena became the best - she took first place and fulfilled the candidate minimum for a master of sports. At the age of 19, Elena Slesarenko joined the main team of the Russian national team.
A year before graduating from Lyceum No. 8 (the well-known specialized sports lyceum “Olympia” in Volgograd), where Boris Nikolaevich taught physical education, Elena began preparing to enter the Volgograd Medical Institute. She dreamed of becoming a sports doctor, but there was no such specialization at the Volgograd Medical Institute, and Lena decided to become a pharmacist. Without stopping training and participating in sports competitions, she studied with a chemistry tutor for a whole year, figured out biology herself using textbooks and manuals, and after graduating from school she applied to the Medical Academy and the Academy of Physical Education. I managed to enter both universities, but the choice was made in favor of medicine and in 1999 Elena began studying at the Volgograd Medical Academy at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
But quitting training was not part of her plans. At the European Championships in Italy, Elena took fourth place. She came to Boris Nikolaevich late in the evening - first she studied at the institute, and then rushed to the stadium or the arena. It was difficult to combine studying at a university with playing sports. Elena's name was heard more and more often at serious sports competitions, and she decided to transfer to the Volgograd Academy of Physical Culture, where she graduated from the first stage in 2006, subsequently continuing her studies in graduate school.
In 2000, Elena fulfilled the standard of an international master of sports. After the 1st year of the medical academy, she entered a professional adult sports career, being in the youth age category. E. Slesarenko has been a member of the Russian national team since 2001. In 2002, the athlete won the Russian adult championship, then went to the European Championship in Vienna - an adult team tournament, where she took fifth place. In the summer of 2003, Elena competed at the European Youth Championships, where she took second place, and at the Universiade among students in Dago she took third place. First commercial competitions
E. Slesarenko took place in Athens. Elena jumped 1.93 meters in height, took third place and competed with current athletes who shared medals at the world championships.
Boris Nikolaevich believed: “Her time will strike in Athens, by 2004 Lena will reach the peak of her form.” Three years before the Olympics, only specialists and track and field fans knew the name of his student. But Gorkov clearly planned the pre-Olympic four years. The experienced coach knew: it’s not for nothing that heights stand apart in athletics, there is a line in front of her that needs to be overcome, and Elena will not break - the more obstacles, the more serious they are, the more she concentrates. Elena Slesarenko is always spurred on by the excitement of the fight, forcing her to jump higher and higher. At competitions, an athlete often reaches higher altitudes than during pre-race training - this has become a good tradition. In high jumps you cannot be one hundred percent sure of victory; any accident can negate all your efforts.
In the 2004 Olympic year, Elena loudly declared herself, setting a personal record and the best result of the season in the world at the beginning of January - 2.00 meters. As a member of the Russian women's team, she won the European Cup, and at the national championship she jumped 2.01 meters, adding another centimeter to her best achievement. She went to the first World Championships in Budapest as one of the favorites, could count on a high place and won it with a Russian record of 2.04 meters. It was a brilliant takeoff. After the victory in Budapest, when meeting at the station, Elena was given a real celebration - a sea of flowers, music, gifts. All close people came to congratulate the winner. She could only dream of such a warm welcome.
The athlete successfully finished the winter season and started the summer season the same way, showing a result of 2.04 meters at the European Cup. In the Olympic year, Elena had 12 starts in winter and 18 in summer, and she won almost all of them. Massage therapist Yuri Konstantinovich Roshchin helped her prepare for the Olympics in Athens, who always supported the athlete psychologically and gave Elena part of his soul and labor.
At the XXVIII Olympics in Athens, Elena Slesarenko achieved a great victory: she managed to break the Russian high jump record, which had stood for twenty years, and set a new Olympic one. Her gold medal propelled Russia into the top three in the team event at the 2004 Games. Slesarenko's foreign starts began in Greece in the winter of 2001 (commercial competition - high jump). Then Elena threw a coin into the sea, and three years later she threw the last gold medal in the track and field tournament into the piggy bank of the Russian team. It was “the last drop of Russian golden rain” that fell on the main stadium of the Greek capital that day. Elena's main rival was South African Hestri Klute. All heights: 1.85; 1.89; 1.93; 1.96; 1.99; 2.02; Slesarenko took 2.04, 2.06 on the first try, easily, calmly, beautifully. Her confident attitude towards victory broke her rivals. The South African representative failed to overcome the height of 2.04 on her second attempt. The bar was set at a height of 2.06 - a centimeter higher than the 1996 Olympic record, which was achieved in Atlanta by Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova. Klute made her third attempt to this height, but the Olympic record did not give in to her. Elena Slesarenko's jump was perfect, and she raised her hand in victory. Here it is, the long-awaited moment of the most important sports victory! A Russian record that stood for two decades was broken. She then set the bar at 2.10 meters, a new world record, and was very close to achieving it. The title of Olympic champion, and with such a magnificent result, was an unexpected surprise not only for sports fans, but also for herself. Probably, Boris Nikolaevich Gorkov took this result “more calmly” than everyone else. An experienced coach, who has trained more than one generation of talented athletes, said two months before the Olympic tournament that Elena was in excellent physical shape.
Then there were congratulations and awards in the capital and abroad, and a reception with the President of Russia. Elena shone at the ball in her native Sports Palace, where the regional governor personally congratulated the winners and presented each with a check for 1 million rubles, which Elena easily gave away to buy housing for her grandmother. At the Peter's Assembly in Moscow, the country's best managers, famous political figures, and famous artists stood and greeted the champions of the 2004 Games. An unusual spectacle was a costume ball with Peter I and Catherine, ladies-in-waiting, and majordomo as part of the assembly. The Prince of Monaco, himself a former Olympian, honored the best athletes of the season in Monte Carlo, and the ceremony of awarding the sports prize “Glory” in the “Discovery” category took place in the capital’s Russian Army Theater.
The 2004 Games showed that Volgograd women's athletics occupies a leading position in the world. In 2004, Elena Slesarenko rightfully took third place in the world rankings (only E. Isimbaeva and T. Lebedeva were ahead). After the Olympic triumph, a lot changed in Elena’s life: she reached the pinnacle of sports, she is known all over the world. This freed her from the torment that every athlete experiences: “What if it doesn’t work out? What if all the strength and nerves, all the years spent on grueling training, do not lead to anything significant? Now all this is behind us. Elena Slesarenko is one of the best jumpers in the world.
After the Olympics, the athlete allowed herself to relax and rest for the first time in a long time. She managed to visit the most beautiful places - she climbed the mountains, to the clouds, visited Dombay and Krasnaya Polyana. The underwater world beckoned. Elena mastered not only scuba diving, but also diving, rafting, jet skiing, diving in the Red Sea, enjoying the exotic coral. Her zodiac sign is Pisces, and her dream is an aquarium, which Lena wants to install in her apartment.
In July 2005, at the Russian Championship, E. Slesarenko showed the best result of the season in the country - 2.00 meters. Also in 2005, she suffered an injury in Helsinki, but in 2006 she recovered and won the Russian Championship, jumping 1.98. And 20 days later she won a big victory, winning the World Championships in Moscow with a score of 2.02. This moment became one of the brightest events in the athlete’s life and will be remembered forever. Slesarenko arrived at the World Championships without plans to win, but with a dream in her soul. And this victory became her reward after a series of failures. It was then that Elena realized how unpredictable sport is.
She has light, graceful, beautiful jumps. Watching Slesarenko perform is a true pleasure. In 2006, at the European Championships in Gothenburg (Sweden), Elena took an honorable fifth place, and at the end of the season in Athens she won the World Cup. The athlete's 2007 season turned out to be very strong: her name can be seen in second place in the overall ranking, and in the world she occupies 19th position.
Lena loves almost all sports, supports the Russians, is proud of the successes of Volgograd athletes and the fact that Elena Isimbaeva and Tatyana Lebedeva trained next to her and reached great heights in sports. Lena tries to look up to them, especially Tatyana Lebedeva, whom she considers her friend.
Elena treats those who have higher achievements with respect and admiration, and tries to support those starting a sports career. She always takes part in all events related to the development of children's sports with great pleasure. Elena Slesarenko is a frequent visitor both to her native Sports School No. 10 and to other schools in the city. She loves children and dreams of her own daughter and son. Family means a lot to Elena. She values the opinions of her parents very much, honors and cares for her grandmothers, who are over 80 years old. She likes outdoor recreation; in her free time, Lena watches films and reads. Since childhood, he has been very fond of dogs; the cocker spaniel Bonnie has lived in their family for a long time. Lena often went to sports camp with this dog. She is attracted by travel, she likes both calm Europe and Moscow, where life is in full swing. If an outstanding athlete wants to return to a certain city, she throws a coin for luck - this was the case in Budapest and Athens. On the eve of the competition, Elena refuses to watch television and prefers reading to take her mind off the upcoming competition.
Unconquered Olympic and world heights are calling, but Elena is seriously thinking about becoming a good coach in the future. According to Boris Nikolaevich, she has excellent makings for this. E. Slesarenko strives to set new personal records - for her this has always been happiness, and she is sure that the main thing for an athlete is to defeat himself. Elena Slesarenko is a very serious person and her dreams are also serious. She dreams of defending her PhD thesis related to the methods of training high jumps and the influence of loads on the development of an athlete’s body, his strength qualities, to do something more significant for world sports, to become a member of the IOC or a goodwill ambassador. She reads a lot - both fiction and non-fiction. Studying English and history.

Competitions, meetings at train stations, social events - at all these events the Volgograd queen of heights was constantly accompanied by her husband Alexander. Earlier. But since this sports season, a completely different person began to be noticed next to the beautiful jumper. Fair-haired Alexander Slesarenko was replaced by a handsome brunette. “Just a friend,” Elena’s close friends brushed off our questions. “New lover,” others whispered in confidence. - We must prepare: we will give our Lena in marriage! Slesarenko herself stubbornly refused to tell anything about her personal life. She only mentioned that she had finally separated from her husband, with whom she had been married for almost 4 years. The girl’s first chosen one is a former winner of the All-Russian junior championships in pole vaulting. Who was second remained a mystery for a long time. Finally, we managed to “split” the secretive beauty. - This is my most reliable and closest person, I trust him with everything. His name is Alexander, he is 33 years old. His education is surgical, but now he is a sports doctor. Works in the track and field athletics club of the Moscow region. We have known each other for a very long time on a professional basis, I can’t even count how many years,” admitted Elena. - When did you start dating? - Well, this is already very personal! - Lena looked down. - About two years already. I'm very happy with him. And I am sure that this is the most reliable shoulder a woman can dream of. A kind, loyal and devoted person. I love him so much. And it's mutual. - So, we’ll still hang out at the wedding? - No, we are not planning a wedding: he was married, I was married. Enough, enough, I think... - Let us venture to ask: you are already 24 years old, have you ever thought about having a child? - I’m now thinking about the next Olympics - in Beijing. After 2008 we will see. I'm thinking more about the upcoming vacation. This season I have two last competitions left - the World Athletics Final and the World Cup. Then I will finally rest. Let's go with Sasha to hot countries, otherwise the weather in Moscow, where I spent the whole summer, was not particularly pampering. Let us recall that the head coach of the Russian national athletics team, Valery Kulichenko, invited Elena to train in the town of Zhukovsky near Moscow, and the governor of the Moscow region, Gromov, provided the champion with a two-room apartment for free. So in this Olympic cycle, Elena will compete from two regions at once: the Volgograd and Moscow regions. - Have you already moved into a new apartment? - Where there! For now we are staying in a hotel for athletes. They gave us warrants, but the building where our apartment will be is not yet completed. Then repairs need to be done there. I want to arrange everything the same as in my Volgograd apartment: good layout, huge space, comfort. I will definitely use the services of a designer. But I’m sure the time to move in will come very quickly...
