Army Aviation Day is a celebration of military helicopter pilots! Day of the creation of army aviation.
October 28 - on this day 68 years ago, the first squadron equipped with helicopters was formed in the Soviet Union. It happened in Serpukhov, near Moscow. From that moment, in fact, the formation began army aviation as a separate branch of troops, in the first stages of which helicopters were considered to be exclusively auxiliary aviation technology.
The range of tasks of helicopter squadrons of the first period most often included cargo transportation tasks. Over time, tasks began to be added to monitor certain objects, communicate, and adjust fire. At the same time, the fire was adjusted with an eye to the fact that the rotorcraft hanging in the air was itself a target for enemy forces on the ground.
The first squadron of army aviation was formed on the basis of several G-3 helicopters of the Soviet aircraft designer Ivan Bratukhin, which were later replaced by the Mi-1.

Moreover, the formation did not take place without some rough edges. Noteworthy is the fact that the helicopters were actually used in test mode. The first flight of this light rotorcraft was made just a month before the formation of the squadron in Serpukhov. And only 4 years later its (Mi-1) serial production began in the USSR. This gap (from the moment of the first flight to the beginning serial production) is explained by the fact that the role of helicopters in the late 40s and early 50s in the Soviet Union, frankly speaking, was underestimated. The light Mi-1s were poorly suited for transporting massive cargo, or rather, they were not suitable at all. For landing, given that there could only be two people on board besides the pilot, the Mi-1 was also very difficult to approach.

Manufacturers began to force the issue only after a report to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief that the Americans had resorted to using helicopters in the war on the Korean Peninsula.
Over the years of its existence, Army Aviation pilots on various rotary-wing aircraft performed a wide range of tasks in different corners country and beyond. And we are not just talking about military operations. Army aviation pilots were often involved in search and rescue missions. rescue operations, as well as in security operations in areas of natural and man-made disasters. In particular, the professional experience of the USSR Air Force helicopter crews was used in eliminating the consequences of the accident at Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Unfortunately, it was not always possible without casualties.
The terrible footage of the fall of the Mi-8 helicopter of the crew commander, Captain Vladimir Vorobyov, onto the then-retired sarcophagus of the Chernobyl power unit on October 2, 1986, can still leave few people indifferent today. Full list those who died on that fateful day: Mr. Vladimir Vorobyov, Senior Lieutenant Alexander Yungkind, Senior Lieutenant Leonid Khristich and Senior Lieutenant Nikolai Ganzhuk.
The helicopter crew had previously flown a mission in Afghanistan, and the families Soviet pilots They believed that nothing could be more terrible than Afghanistan for their beloved men and for themselves. But fate decreed otherwise.
Thanks to the courage and heroism of such people, who actually risked their lives every second, it was possible to localize that terrible disaster, echoes of which are still heard 30 years after the accident.
Today, army aviation is involved in the execution of military operation against international terrorists in the Syrian Arab Republic. Speaking about the implementation of the tasks set by the command to provide assistance to the SAR troops, by definition one cannot help but recall the crew of the Mi-25 helicopter (export version of the Mi-24). The crew commander, Colonel 51-year-old Ryafagat Khabibullin, and 24-year-old Lieutenant Evgeniy Dolgin were flying over the Syrian city of Palmyra, Homs province. The helicopter struck militants of the so-called " Islamic State"(banned in the Russian Federation) and thereby thwarted their attack on the positions of the Syrian army. On the way to the airbase, Ryafagat Khabibullina’s helicopter was attacked by militants from the ground and crashed in an area under the control of the Syrian armed forces. Both pilots were killed. The street is named after Colonel R. Khabibullin and comprehensive school in the pilot’s home village – Vyazovy Gai ( Ulyanovsk region).
Russian Army Aviation pilots participate in numerous humanitarian operations within the framework of various international missions, including UN missions in Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
Army aviation today is equipped with numerous helicopters for various purposes. This " workhorse"Army aviation Mi-8, the world's largest mass-produced rotary-wing transport aircraft Mi-26, attack aircraft Mi-24, Mi-28N " Night Hunter", Ka-50" Black Shark", Ka-52 "Alligator".
In addition, these are multi-purpose helicopters Ka-226, Ansat-U, numerous modifications of the same irreplaceable Mi-8, including Mi-8AMTSh and Mi-8MTV-5. Every year to the troops within state program During the rearmament of the Russian army, dozens of helicopters are arriving, replenishing various units and formations.
The development of army aviation fully meets the interests of Russia and continues at full speed.

Currently time is running re-equipping army aviation units with new and modernized helicopters
At the Moscow Aviation Center, most workers celebrate Army Aviation Day every year. After all, it’s no secret that 90 percent of the flight personnel of the State Institution “MAC” are former military helicopter pilots. And those who have not flown for a long time also once served in helicopter aviation. Many went through “hot spots”, reached the military pension and found themselves in civil aviation, having invested all your rich past experience to work at MAC.
Today, those who have gone through thick and thin, participating in rescue operations in Afghanistan, in the mountains of the North Caucasus, etc. operate ambulance and firefighting helicopters of the Moscow Aviation Center. They fly out every day to save people in need of emergency medical care; on call they rush to help cope with major fires in Moscow; During the seasons, they fly out to investigate fire or flood conditions.
Among the former army helicopter pilots at the Moscow Aviation Center and those who provide flights to rescue people on the ground, which is no less important.

- multi-purpose attack helicopters Mi-24 and Mi-35M,
- heavy multi-purpose transport Mi-26,
- strike Mi-28N "Night Hunter", Ka-50 "Black Shark" and Ka-52 "Alligator".
Educational establishments
Army aviation pilots are trained at the Syzran branch Military Science Center VKS "Air Force Academy named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky and Yu.A. Gagarin" (Syzran, Samara region; until 2009 - Syzran Higher Military aviation school pilots) on multi-purpose helicopters "Ansat-U" and Ka-226.
Training is also conducted at the 334th Center for Combat Training and Retraining of Army Aviation Flight Personnel in Torzhok (Tver Region), where the Berkut aerobatic team is based, flying Mi-28N helicopters.
Peacetime use
The Army Aviation flight training program includes fire reconnaissance; military helicopters are used to directly combat forest fires and take part in rescue operations.
Thus, in the spring of 2016, army aviation extinguished forest fires in Transbaikalia, in the summer it monitored the fire situation in 26 regions of the Russian Federation and participated in eliminating the consequences of the anthrax outbreak in Yamal, in September it delivered heat guns and humanitarian aid to settlements in Primorye, which suffered from the flood.
Re-equipment
Currently, army aviation units are being re-equipped with new and modernized helicopters. During 2015, the troops received 158 new or repaired vehicles at the enterprises of the military-industrial complex.
The date October 28, 1948 became the starting point for the creation of domestic army aviation. It was on this day that the first army aviation squadron was formed, the location of which was Serpukhov near Moscow. This was the country's first helicopter unit of the Air Force, which received the official name of the 26th UTAAE (separate training aviation squadron).
The selection of personnel for the unit being formed was quite strict. Experienced pilots from the assault and combat regiments were selected for the 26th aviation training squadron. fighter aircraft, many of whom managed to prove themselves during the Great Patriotic War. However, among the pilots recruited for service there were also very young people. But these were truly strong young people who had already demonstrated their capabilities during their service on the Il-2 and Il-10 aircraft. One of the representatives of the young officers there was Yegor Milutichev, a senior lieutenant who had previously served as an instructor at an aviation school.

This wonderful holiday has come - the Day of the Creation of Army Aviation. We would like to sincerely wish the best to true professionals in their field. I wish you peace in the whole world, tranquility, comfort and excellent service. May love and optimism never leave your heart. Happy Army Aviation Day.
The traditions of the celebration are practically no different from other military holidays. On this day, the best employees are awarded, given certificates, diplomas, bonuses and thanked for their excellent service.
On October 28th they celebrate their professional holiday people who know exactly what the romance of the sky and alluring space are. This day is a holiday for pilots, navigators, flight engineers, ground specialists and for all those related to army aviation.
It was on October 28, 1948, in Serpukhov near Moscow, that the first army aviation unit was formed - an aviation squadron that received G-3 helicopters.
Its initial tasks were to transport various cargo by air, conduct reconnaissance and provide communications. In other words, the tasks were limited to auxiliary tasks. By the way, it was auxiliary army aviation that was originally called.
It received the name army already in the early 70s, after the adoption of the Mi-24 helicopter, whose main task there was air support for the ground forces.
Over the years, Army Aviation has participated in various search and rescue operations, as well as in operations to prevent natural and man-made disasters. In particular, the professional experience of pilots was used during the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. Experienced Afghan pilots flew incredible feats, literally stopping helicopters over the mouth of the destroyed 4th power unit, and making it possible to throw sandbags and lead ingots down. The expediency of these measures, as it later turned out, was very doubtful, but this does not in any way negate the dedication of the helicopter crews in the skies over Chernobyl and Pripyat.
Army aviation crews were involved in resolving military conflicts in Russia and other countries former USSR, defended the interests of our Motherland in “hot spots” outside the borders of our country. This includes the aforementioned Afghanistan, where the success of entire operations against militant groups actively supported by the West and monarchies often depended on the actions of the crews and technical personnel of army aviation. Persian Gulf.
Today, army aviation takes part in a military operation against international terrorists in the Syrian Arab Republic. Today we cannot help but remember the death of the crew of the Mi-25 helicopter. The crew commander, Colonel R. Khabibullin and Lieutenant E. Dolgin, at the cost of their lives, thwarted the offensive of ISIS militants (*banned in the Russian Federation) on the positions of the Syrian army in the Palmyra area.
Russian Army Aviation pilots participate in numerous humanitarian operations in Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asian countries. This work, unnoticed by many departments and the media, actually sometimes carries no less risks than participation in a direct combat operation. After all Russian helicopters and Russian crews who are part of the flight fleet of many international organizations, have come under fire more than once from various gang groups. Moreover, they were subjected to it in those moments when it was least expected.
Modern army aviation plays everything big role in strategy and tactics of rescue and combat operations. It is for this reason that increasing and updating the helicopter fleet is one of the development priorities Armed Forces Russian Federation.
The army aviation of the Russian Armed Forces today includes attack, multi-purpose and military transport helicopters.
By 2020, more than 1 thousand new rotorcraft should enter service with army aviation. We are talking primarily about the Ka-52 Alligator combat helicopters. The helicopter is designed to destroy tanks, armored and unarmored military equipment, manpower, helicopters and others aircraft enemy, is capable of acting in any weather conditions and at any time of the day. The combat vehicle is equipped with the most modern and powerful weapons, which can be configured for various combat missions. In addition, the Ka-52 Alligator is equipped with an electronic defense system and visibility reduction devices that reduce, dissipate and distort the thermal signature of engines, as well as active countermeasures.
In 2019, the Russian Helicopters holding company intends to enter into a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense for the supply of Russian Ka-52K Katran deck helicopters. Russian Ministry of Defense this information already confirmed.
Currently, the holding’s specialists are developing an unmanned version of the Ka-226T light multi-purpose helicopter. This development will allow us to reach new level helicopter manufacturing in Russia.
Behind last decades Army aviation was reformed and reorganized several times, moving from Air Force V Ground troops and back. In 1990, army aviation became an independent branch of the military, and in 2003 it was again transferred to the jurisdiction of the Russian Air Force, which in turn became part of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
But transformations are transformations, and the main asset of army aviation has always been and remains the moral and volitional qualities of pilots, their professionalism and willingness to do their job without excessive pathos.
"Military Review" congratulates personnel and happy holiday to army aviation veterans!
