XCOM 2 Chief Producer Garth DeAngelis talks about tactics for playing in a mode that less than 5% of players have mastered
In the pantheon of challenging games, 2K's XCOM series serves as a rite of passage. It is not very simple even at lower difficulty levels. Players who rush into battle without examining every corner and planning their actions will lose soldiers quite quickly. Even the most inexperienced XCOM players know that they need to be careful, patient and, most importantly, save as often as possible.
However, even battle-hardened fighters will think twice before venturing into Terminator mode. But those who prefer to play games on the highest difficulty levels are sure that XCOM should be played in this mode, and understand that those who choose it will need to make every effort. Not only are there faster, stronger and much more dangerous enemies, but and just one save. In this case, the data of this save is overwritten after each action performed during the task.
This means that any wrong step can lead to dire consequences. For example, if you move too aggressively along an undiscovered part of the map and end up surrounded, you will not be able to load an old save and replay the episode. You can spend many hours developing your characters and choosing the best equipment, only to lose everything in a matter of minutes due to poor planning. And nothing can be done about it.
Tribute to the original game
“The core ideas behind Terminator Mode are the cornerstones of the entire XCOM series. This is a game about difficult decisions and their radical consequences. In modern games in the series, you can save before and after every move you make, but to truly play XCOM is to make difficult decisions and be prepared for anything, says Garth DeAngelis, lead producer of XCOM 2. - When we made XCOM: Enemy Unknown , we wanted to immediately make it clear to our audience that we will not simplify the gameplay, because the series is famous for its complexity. We've added different difficulty levels and customization options to XCOM to make it appealing to a wider range of players, but we've kept the Terminator mode for fans of the original game. This regime is a tribute to the past.”
To say that finishing the game in Terminator mode is not easy is to say nothing. In fact, it's so difficult that less than 5% of players have succeeded, according to Garth. These elite fans have proven that even though The Terminator is incredibly difficult, it is still possible to beat the game.
Difficult but fair
Garth says that the developers at Firaxis were faced with the difficult task of making sure that the Terminator mode was not only very difficult, but also fair towards players.
“The Terminator changes the campaign experience, so our designers paid special attention to balancing the different difficulty settings,” says Garth. “Getting the Legend difficulty level, the highest in XCOM 2, right was a challenge, but our designers did a great job.” We wanted it to be more "fair" than the highest difficulty setting in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The point of “Legends” is to punish the player for his mistakes. However, if you make the right decisions, both at the tactical and strategic levels of the game, then you will not have problems passing.”
It also helps that Firaxis testers are some of the best XCOM players. Garth says their team regularly played both games on the highest difficulty levels. Testers told the developers if the game seemed too unfair or, conversely, too easy, and their feedback was simply invaluable.
“The first tester who completed the game on Legend told us a lot of interesting things, writing a detailed report in which, among other things, he said how incredible it was to overcome all the difficulties and win the game,” recalls Garth.
What should players who dare to play through XCOM in Terminator mode for the first time expect?
Tips for those about to try XCOM's hardest mode
Firstly, you only have one save, so there are only two options to choose from - save or quit - but the overall difficulty of the game increases significantly. Resources are more expensive, enemies have better equipment, and sometimes you'll be forced to evacuate mid-mission. This may cause some members of the XCOM program to quit the project, but sometimes it is better to take such a blow than to lose a lot of resources and soldiers as a result of a failed mission.
“The Terminator is XCOM. The already complex game takes on its true, most demanding form in this mode,” notes Garth. “You will have to decide what losses are acceptable, because you will lose soldiers and fail missions.” In addition, at the “Legend” level, completing the campaign will take you about one and a half times longer, so be prepared for this. You can beat the game on “Legend” with “Terminator,” but you will have to get the most out of every item and soldier and use every opportunity to get to the end alive. If you beat the game in this mode, then you have truly mastered it.”
Of course, players who want to play XCOM or XCOM 2 in Terminator mode can find a lot of information about it. The community has created many walkthroughs, videos and a constantly updated Wikipedia, from which you can get comprehensive information about various elements of the game - types of soldiers, special skills, what research to do first and how best to build out your base.
“Don't play Terminator on Legend difficulty if you're new to XCOM 2. Both the tactical and strategic aspects of the game have undergone big changes compared to XCOM: Enemy Unknown,” Garth explains. – Even experienced players should reconsider their proven strategies when starting to play the second part. We even recommend choosing the “Professional” or “Rookie” difficulty for your first playthrough. Play through the campaign a few times to familiarize yourself with the game and understand when and what to expect from it. Being able to prepare ahead of time will help you greatly. Also, don’t forget to actively use grenades to smoke enemies out of cover.”
In the modern world, engineering activities are becoming increasingly integrated, comprehensive and innovative. Moreover, today a specialist, having a limitless information resource and modern computer systems, can quickly solve research, design, engineering, technological and other problems. However, the driving force behind the latest developments remains human talent. It is engineering thought, based on experience and skills, that gives impetus to the creation of this or that new product.
The hero of our issue, Yuri Ivanovich Konovalov, is one of the galaxy of such talented engineers. Although he treats his person modestly and does not believe that he is doing anything outstanding, he simply honestly fulfills his professional duties.
“We have been waiting for five years for Yuri Ivanovich to come to our plant,” says Avtom-2 General Director Evgeny Perevozchikov. — A classy specialist, with a thoughtful and responsible approach to business. Has vast experience.
Let us explain that Yuri Konovalov came to Avtom-2 at the beginning of the 2000s. And before that, after graduating from the Polytechnic Institute, he worked at the Voronezh Excavator Plant for more than twenty years. He came there in 1983 as a young specialist as a technologist, and a year later became the head of the technology bureau in the mechanical assembly shop.
“My specialty - mechanical engineering technology, metal-cutting machines and tools - did not disappoint me, on the contrary, it met my aspirations and aspirations and completely captivated me,” Yuri Ivanovich talks about his first steps into the profession. — Yes, and working at a large plant was prestigious. Although the attitude towards the engineering personnel at the plant, to put it mildly, was undeservedly dismissive. We were constantly sent either to agricultural work - weeding and harvesting vegetables, or to arranging social facilities: preparing a pioneer camp for the summer season, etc.
After joining Avtom-2, Yuri Ivanovich’s circle of responsibilities narrowed somewhat, but he was able to fully engage in engineering activities in the most literal sense of the word. And the attitude here was different: an engineer is a specialist capable of optimizing the technological process and creating conditions under which production will be as profitable as possible.
“At first, I provided technological support, setup and adjustment of CNC machines for the turning group,” continues Yuri Konovalov. — There weren’t many of them back then, but it’s worth noting that the plant is constantly improving its production process. New advanced technologies are being introduced, and we are often one of the first to have equipment among enterprises in the Voronezh region. Gradually, orders at the plant grew, volumes increased, and new areas of activity appeared. All this required expansion and improvement of the existing production base. Optimization of production processes is a complex, but also interesting process.
The main activity of Avtom-2 LLC is the production of specialized tools for all types of car repairs. The production of specialized surgical instruments has become one of the new and priority areas of the enterprise. Yuri Konovalov is directly involved in the development of design and technological documentation and the production process for manufacturing a new product.
“In terms of functionality, our device is significantly superior to foreign analogues,” says Evgeniy Perevozchikov. “It is designed for a wide range of instruments used by surgeons, and allows you to obtain material from any point inside the human body, practically without disturbing the integrity of the body. Currently, such manipulations by doctors are carried out through strip operations. Our device makes it possible to quickly and efficiently conduct a study of the body, with virtually no inconvenience to a person already suffering from the disease. And perhaps thereby saving his life.
Medical topics are not the only direction that Avtoma-2 has recently focused on. They are actively involved in the production of suspended equipment for agricultural machinery and produce products for the oil and gas industry. And in every order there is something that forces you to look for optimal ways of working or even a qualitatively new approach to complete it. And engineering begins to create, which has no time to rest and no switch to turn it off. She lives continuously until the result appears - intermediate, final, it doesn’t matter. Because she is already on the road again, looking for new solutions. This is what Yuri Konovalov thinks:
— I chose my specialty well, it corresponds to my mentality and character. I'm interested in working on technical problems, and the more complex they are, the more exciting it is for me.
We continue our series of articles dedicated to the best representatives of high difficulty levels in PlayStation games. Since the War of the Chosen expansion was recently released for , we decided to turn to the most unforgiving mode in this game.

So. Terminator mode. How do you assess your chances?
Andrei MANYAKHIN easily agreed to the conversation, and when we shook hands with him upon parting, it seemed to me that we had known each other for a long time. This ease of communication did not apply to the preparation of material about him.
“I was born in 1978,” the machine operator began to tell, “I’ve been working on machinery since ’92.” At that time I was still in school, and in the summer I went to work on equipment in a brigade. Father Andrei Stepanovich is from the Manyakhin dynasty. His brother Vasily Stepanovich worked right there, and then went to Chistogorsk, where he was a bulldozer operator at a mine. Then there is Nikolai Stepanovich, my father’s brother, who is both a driver and a tractor driver.
And then my new acquaintance begins to tell the story of why he became a tractor driver. It turned out that this job is easy for the guy. I was constantly with my father from an early age, he helped me get a job in the brigade and took me on a tractor. The guy was given equipment under his responsibility.
“The system was good,” Andrei Andreevich smiles. - My father helped, the other tractor drivers were somehow interested in making me a working man. Now there are no young people in the brigade. If a young man comes, he needs to know everything right away, because this is a technique, you need to take it seriously. And who doesn’t have experience... And where can he get experience if he can’t get a job?
It was possible not to ask whether the interlocutor likes to be a tractor driver, but how not to ask, so that, as they say, you can hear the answer first hand, and not figure it out yourself.
- Do I like this job? - and asks again, and then confirms. - I wonder when it happens? The more complicated the better! How difficult could it be? Weather conditions, for example. Some delicate work. Why do I work on a forklift? There you need concentration, concentration. The loader is a universal one, it’s called “Karpatets”.
Andrei Manyakhin did not immediately receive such a tractor. First there were the T-40, then the MTZ-82, then the YuMZ grab, and only then he got the current Karpatets. However, it would be wrong to keep silent about the fact that Andrei Andreevich also owns another tractor - “Belarus 1221”, which is in its fourth year. On it he will, as usual, be engaged in the preparation of green mass: haylage, silage. In the spring, too, he did not sit idle, carried out the instructions of the foreman. The tractor driver himself said: very different. It will transfer to the Karpatets in the winter to load haylage and silage.
- I wanted the quality of domestic equipment to be better. Somewhere it was put together in a hurry, not tightened up as it should be, somewhere it wasn’t thought through, you have to finish it for the assemblers and designers.
The tractor driver points to the Belarus, next to which we are standing, and knocks with his palm on the tank attached to it:
- We attached the additional fuel tank ourselves, because one is not enough for a shift - the factory one is small. Or the air intake was taken outside the cabin, because there is a lot of sowing dust in it. Well, we do some little things.
Andrey Manyakhin has a family in Nikolaevka: a wife and two children. The eldest son, Vyacheslav, is now finishing the 11th grade; at home he helps with the housework, including managing the cattle that are on the Manyakhins’ farmstead. The head of the family, in his free time, if he has any, watches “News” on TV, and in it everything that concerns the government. He says it’s interesting to hear promises and know what has been fulfilled: “I want to know what our tomorrow will be like.” Andrei Andreevich is also interested in science fiction, and “soap operas,” as he puts it, are boring.

When it comes to the military, memory in nine cases out of ten helpfully gives us the names of Alexander Nevsky, Suvorov, Kutuzov, Zhukov - commanders whose fates invariably attract the attention of people of art, historians and publicists. In fact, the life of those who chose to serve the Fatherland as their destiny often resembles a fascinating story, even if their biographies did not make it onto the pages of books.
How "Officers" determined their fate
Sergei Evgenievich Ilyin, Deputy Managing Director of KBP JSC for interaction with state and regional authorities, served in the ranks of the Armed Forces of the USSR and the Russian Federation for thirty years and three years, who celebrated his birthday yesterday. This figure, by the way, is expectedly associated with the epic about the hero Ilya Muromets. However, the fate of Sergei Evgenievich himself had its own robber nightingales, heavy stones and military service...
Ilyin was born in Moscow, but lived there only briefly. He himself describes the geography of life as follows:
In short, I lived in Germany for ten years, in Mongolia for three years, in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan for five years, in the Far East for five years, and now for the sixth year in Tula...
His father fought in the Great Patriotic War, and after the end of hostilities he became a builder. Sergei Evgenievich remembers him with unchanging love, reverence and pride: he says that he always looks up to and still wants to be like this honest and decent man.
Before Ilyina’s son reached school age, they lived in Germany, then returned to the Soviet Union.
“I remember my school years and teachers with great pleasure,” says Sergei Evgenievich. “Yes, it was the Soviet period, but how much good, kind, and bright there was in it!” Wonderful schools that provide excellent education, pioneer camps, sports sections and clubs, various clubs, and events. Like most boys, he was interested in football, basketball, and volleyball. I was truly happy at that time.
In those years, the front-line soldiers were still full of strength and energy and actively participated in the life of the country - they had no time for memories. The boys grew up watching films and books about the war - “Volunteers”, “The Fate of Man” and, of course, “Officers”. It seems that the words of the hero of the film: “There is such a profession - to defend the Motherland” became decisive for young Sergei. Despite the fact that at first the guy dreamed of entering the Moscow Higher Technical School named after N. Bauman and even took preparatory courses, in 1975 Ilyin put on the uniform of a cadet of the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School named after the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR...
And in 1978, when Ilyin was a third-year student, a young girl named Elena came to work at the school in the department of operation of wheeled and tracked vehicles.
She was nineteen years old at that time,” recalls Sergei Evgenievich. “We met, liked each other, and then fell in love. So on July 21, 1979 I had my graduation, and July 28 was my wedding. I arrived at my duty station with my young wife, and she walked the path from cadet to general next to me. We have been together for forty years, my wife is my reliable support...
From Berlin to the Caucasus
And Ilyin began to serve in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany. His company had the opportunity to guard the main war criminals of World War II in the Spandau prison, which was located in West Berlin. By that time, out of seven prisoners, only one remained alive - Rudolf Hess, the famous ideologist of National Socialism, Deputy Fuhrer in the NSDAP and Reich Minister without portfolio. Boris Polevoy in his book “The Nuremberg Trials” calls the five main Nazi criminals led by Hitler the five “Gs”. One of them was Parteigenosse Hess. His guard was alternately carried out by the British, French, Americans and Russians. Ilyin saw Hess several times when he was taken out for a walk.
Five years later, Sergei Evgenievich went to a new destination - to the Transcaucasian Military District. He began serving in Dusheti - in the spurs of the Greater Caucasus Range, south of Tbilisi, and was the chief of staff of a training motorized rifle battalion. Then he commanded a training tank battalion in Vaziani. And he finished his service in the Ilyin district in 1988 as commander of a motorized rifle battalion in Akhalkalaki, on the border with Turkey. At the same time he entered the Moscow Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze, where he studied for three years.
My graduation was the last graduating class of academy students in the Soviet Union,” notes Sergei Evgenievich. “Sometimes I think: it’s probably no coincidence that by the will of fate I find myself at the turning point of some historical events in Mother Russia.
Everyone remembers the “Dashing Nineties” differently. For some, this is, of course, a time of new ideas and global changes, but for the majority it is a catastrophe that destroyed the usual way of life and replaced life with survival.
In the late eighties and early nineties, we were greatly praised by the United States of America and the countries of Western Europe for the fact that we were following the right democratic path,” recalls the deputy managing director of KBP JSC. “And at that time our fellow citizens stood in shameful lines for “ Bush's legs" with coupons for vodka. Then, like a crystal vase, the Soviet Union collapsed. I am still convinced: in the early 1990s we were losing Russia. A little more - and the great country would have disintegrated into appanage principalities.
"Every problem has a name..."
By that time, Sergei Evgenievich’s father had died, and his father-in-law was seriously ill. And the officer with a higher education had no choice but to go on a spree. He worked as a “bouncer” in a pizzeria, and worked at the Havana casino for three years.
I had the opportunity to see life from different sides, I learned a serious lesson, and, to be honest, I don’t regret it at all,” notes Ilyin. “In general, I’m very grateful to the military school, which toughened me up.” The charge of health, vigor, strength of body and spirit, and optimism inherent in school helped me in later life. I then calmly endured certain hardships - for example, if I had to go without sleep for three days, work seven days a week, in any weather conditions.
Parallel to survival “in the conditions of a democratic market” was military biography. In 1991, Sergei Ilyin came to serve in the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces. According to him, service in the General Staff became one of the brightest pages in his life, albeit associated with great difficulties. In those years, Ilyin left home at six in the morning and did not return before eleven at night.
And at the same time, I don’t regret it for a minute,” he says. “I’ve traveled all over Mother Russia, it’s easier to say where I haven’t been.” At the beginning of 2000, active hostilities were still going on in Chechnya, Ingushetia, and Dagestan. I was a participant in these events to one degree or another, I accompanied Sergei Borisovich Ivanov on business trips.
From 2001 to 2006, Ilyin was a general for special assignments with the Minister of Defense, and until October 2007, he was the head of the expert center of the Office of the Minister of Defense. Sergei Evgenievich is convinced that every true leader, officer and man must demand honesty, decency, and diligence, first of all, from himself. It is very important to be able to take responsibility.
I never tire of repeating: every problem has a last name, first name and patronymic,” he believes. “Unfortunately, there are people who like to criticize others, but they are not always ready to take responsibility.
From the Ministry of Defense to the defense industry
After his dismissal from the armed forces, it turned out that the connections, personal acquaintances with many leaders, and the administrative and organizational talents of General Ilyin were greatly needed by the Arsenyev Aviation Company Progress. And on January 1, 2008, he came there as an adviser to the managing director. He came to a new project: the country needed a combat helicopter, the Ka-52.
Then Deputy Air Force Commander for Armaments Oleg Barmin paid special attention to this program.
The release of the Ka-52 combat helicopter is my first victory,” says Sergei Evgenievich. “When we arrived in the Far East, in Arsenyev, we saw a dying plant that was not producing products. And when we lifted the first Ka-52 helicopter into the sky, you won’t believe it, people cried with joy! The biggest success was receiving a state defense order for the production of helicopters. Since 2010, the plant has been mass-producing this product for the Russian Armed Forces. It was a huge victory! And even though my merits in it are one millionth, I am proud that I took an active part in this work.
Sergei Ilyin says that it was during this period that his fate was closely intertwined with the fate of Dmitry Vladimirovich Konoplev, with whom he worked for five years in the Far East.
“It seems to me that at that time Konoplev’s team was noticed as strong managers and leaders,” he says. “Dmitry Vladimirovich invited me to Tula, although, I must admit, it was a little sad, because the fruits of our labors and efforts in Arsenyevskaya Aviation Company: production began to gain momentum, we achieved respect, received a state defense order...
It cannot be said that Ilyin was offered to go completely into the unknown. Working with Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, he repeatedly visited Tula, visited the KBP and admired this enterprise. Getting to know many Russian defense plants allowed me to conduct a correct comparative analysis for myself and draw an unambiguous conclusion: I need to go! JSC KBP and its production site, JSC Shcheglovsky Val, are worthy enterprises with highly qualified personnel, enormous potential and rich traditions.
“I accepted the offer and agreed to become deputy managing director of KBP JSC - chief of staff from July 1, 2012,” says Sergei Evgenievich. “At that time, the state defense order was only three percent, and the turnover was corresponding. It's hard to believe, but it's true. The results of our work in recent years speak for themselves, and our weapons take part in Victory parades on Red Square in Moscow. Yes, working at the famous Tula enterprise is a serious change in my life, it was not easy for me to decide on such a step, sometimes I doubted whether it would work out. Now the state defense order has increased more than tenfold. And the results speak for themselves.
Ilyin never regretted his choice in favor of Tula. He is immensely proud and glad that he was lucky enough to work with Arkady Georgievich Shipunov, who, at the end of his life, accepted Dmitry Konoplev as his successor, and therefore his team.
The main thing is to work fruitfully for the good of the Motherland, so that you don’t feel ashamed of your work,” says the deputy managing director of KBP JSC. “This is what we are doing now at our enterprise.” They say that at any age you can radically change your life and feel happy. The main thing is not to be afraid of anything and seize your chance. I am not afraid of changes; they often happened in my life. My whole life is on a plane, a train, on wheels. Over the past five years, I have driven more than half a million kilometers in my company car. Wherever fate takes you! And in Ashuluk, and in Kapustin Yar, and in the Sochi region at Krasnaya Polyana... I admit, I enjoy this kind of work.
By the way, speaking about Sochi, Ilyin does not hide the fact that most of the trips to the Olympic capital of Russia had nothing to do with recreation. On the contrary, it was about ensuring security, including from the air, both in the city itself and in the Krasnaya Polyana region. S. Ilyin responded to the reliability of the means to ensure this security - products developed and manufactured by KBP specialists.
We encountered a huge problem when preparing for the Olympic Games in Sochi,” explained Ilyin. “We arrived in the Olympic area six months in advance, that is, in September 2013.” At that time, some respected people in the Armed Forces were skeptical about our technology... Time has shown that the truth is on our side.
Sergei Evgenievich receives sincere pleasure from solving complex problems. The more complex the better. It seems that it is extremely important for him to prove his own effectiveness not even to management, but to himself. He likes to work where it is difficult, where he needs to show willpower and character.
When you obviously understand that the task is impossible, but you make every effort - yours and the team's - and achieve your goal, then success comes, - sums up Sergei Evgenievich.
Ordinary General
The chief of staff must be on site from early morning until late evening, in addition, I love working on the move,” notes Ilyin. “I am closer to the work of interacting with state and regional authorities, with testing sites, and enterprises. I hope I can do this. Now I am creating an Enterprise Protocol, I think this is the right decision, because we have a serious team. At least two delegations visit the KBP every week, each of which must be given due attention...
It seems that Sergei Evgenievich lives and breathes work, not noticing anything that does not directly or indirectly concern KBP JSC.
However, he considers the greatest success in life not his career at all, and certainly not the general’s shoulder straps, but... his wife Elena. And he claims that the most precious thing for every person is family.
We love to get together at home,” says Sergei Ilyin. “During my vacation, I devote myself entirely to my family. We adhere to a simple tradition - to always hold on to each other in everything, to believe and trust, and to be sure to discuss any problems together. We try to be friends.
Ilyin considers himself a rich man, but explains that this is not about income and property. He has two children, four grandchildren. The eldest son, Evgeniy, is now thirty-seven years old, the youngest, Victor, is twenty-seven. Evgeniy holds the position of Senior Vice President of Rosbank in Moscow. Victor, like his father, became a military man, served for five years in Omsk as an assistant garrison prosecutor, and is currently the prosecutor of the anti-corruption department in Yekaterinburg with the rank of captain.
“I have two grandchildren and two granddaughters,” Sergei Evgenievich smiles. “The relationship with my grandchildren is trusting. Of course, my wife and I try to find time for them and pay them more attention and care, because grandchildren are a great joy. In life, children and grandchildren are the greatest wealth, for them we live.
Ilyin says that he loves walks in the forest, although he never became an avid fisherman or hunter. He prefers to just take a leisurely walk, most often with his wife. Although he doesn’t reject active recreation either, believing that life is full of activities that are much more interesting than sitting in a chair in front of the TV. He doesn’t like to sit at all, so for his birthday he wished himself strength and health.
To work fully and successfully, to feel in demand, to benefit people and the country, to enjoy life,” explained Sergei Evgenievich. “I don’t see myself retiring yet. Currently I enjoy my work, so I feel happy.
