Areas of application of drilling: prospecting and exploration of mineral resources; development of deposits of liquid, gaseous and solid (by leaching and smelting) minerals through production wells; studying the properties of rocks; blasting operations; artificial fixation of rocks by freezing, bituminization, cementation; drainage of swampy areas and flooded mineral deposits; opening of deposits; laying underground communications; construction of pile foundations.
It is obvious that the Russian economy, which receives about 70% of foreign exchange earnings from the sale of raw materials, including hydrocarbons (oil and gas), needs the search, exploration and production of hydrocarbons to be more active and complete in the coming years. To meet the demands of the oil and gas sector of the country's raw materials complex, as well as in connection with the development and increase in the volume of regional geological survey work for drilling exploration and production wells for oil and gas, the creation of strategic underground gas storage facilities since 2006, the Faculty of Exploration and Development Engineering MGRI - RGGRU trains bachelors in the specialty “Drilling of oil and gas wells”. (1899-1990) - Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor, specialist in the field of drilling exploration of mineral deposits. In 1920, after serving in the Red Army, he entered the MGA (now RGGRU). From 1923 - drilling foreman during exploration of the Kursk magnetic anomaly, later head of drilling operations in the Staro-Oskol region. After graduating from the Moscow State University (1925), he worked at Geolkom in Leningrad, and from 1926 he supervised mining and drilling work in the Nerchinsk Party. In 1927, for the first time in the USSR, he successfully used shot drilling. In 1930-1933 he headed drilling at the iron ore deposits of Krivoy Rog and the Almalyk copper deposit (Uzbekistan). In 1933 he was invited to MGRI (now RGGRU), where in 1951 he organized and headed the department of exploration drilling. During his 57-year scientific and pedagogical career, he published 130 works, including 13 textbooks and teaching aids. He trained a whole galaxy of students, many of them became doctors of technical sciences. . The first independent graduating class of students from the department consisted of 27 drillers and one operator.

. From 1958 to 1964, the department was headed by associate professor Mikhail Yakovlevich Berkovich, confirmed in 1963 with the rank of professor. Having extensive production experience, he focused the team on solving current scientific and technical problems of drilling wells in difficult conditions. The important contribution of M.Ya. Berkovich's development of the department is the organization of systematic research into drilling technology, attracting talented young people to the department (L.A. Alekseeva, P.N. Matyushina, A.N. Popova, etc.), which subsequently became the support of the scientific activity of the department. The beginning of the department’s research work on economic contracts with the Bashneft production association is associated with his name. The first industry research laboratory of the USSR Ministry of Petroleum Industry at the Ufa Petroleum Institute was created at the drilling department on his initiative.
. From 1964 to 1998, the department was headed by Professor Midhat Rakhmatullich Mavlyutov. More than 50 years of his life were associated with the Ufa Petroleum Institute, and then the university. M.R. Mavlyutov managed to attract, first to graduate school, and then to teaching work, almost the entire current teaching staff of the department. He has trained more than 50 candidates and about 20 doctors of science. He is the author of about 400 scientific and methodological works, several textbooks and monographs, some of which have been translated into English and Spanish. M.R. Mavlyutov is the owner of almost 50 inventions and patents, including those registered in the USA, Germany and other countries. The merits of Midhat Rakhmatullich were highly appreciated by the state. He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor (1975), twice - the Prize named after. Academician I.M. Gubkin, gold medals from VDNKh, medal from the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences “For Scientific Discovery” named after. acad. P. L. Kapitsa (1995).
. From 1999 to March 2009, the head of the department was Professor Farit Akramovich Agzamov, who continued and developed the successes of the department’s scientific and teaching staff, which is one of the most stable and qualified in the country’s higher oil and gas education system.
. A significant contribution to the development of the department was made by associate professors M.M., who worked in the team over the years. Abdullin, M.Sh. Akmullin, V.G. Yasov, A.F. Grigoriev, Yu.V. Kryuchkov, V.B. Shtuhr, A.F. Starkov, R.M. Nurgaleev.
. The 70s included the creation of two more industry-specific research laboratories - the Ministry of Geology of the RSFSR and the Ministry of Gas Industry of the USSR. The work of the student scientific society has intensified. Postgraduate students worked in industry research laboratories, and students underwent practical training. During these years, the department was replenished with new structural divisions. A computer center, an X-ray diffraction analysis laboratory, a physical and chemical laboratory, a grouting solutions laboratory, a drilling fluids laboratory, a wave processes laboratory, and a drilling tools laboratory were created; Equipping with special teaching and research equipment continued. The Ufa Petroleum Institute became the first university in the USSR to purchase a simulator for the prevention and elimination of oil, gas and water ingress, and drilling mode stands were installed on the basis of several drilling rigs.

The teaching staff of the department initiated a fundamentally new approach to training future specialists, combining educational programs not only with scientific research: student educational, scientific and production teams of up to two hundred people were created annually, in which students, while undergoing practical training under the guidance of teachers, introduced innovative developments of the department.

Subsequently, for the development and industrial implementation of highly efficient technologies and downhole technical means for drilling and development of wells, a group of scientific and pedagogical workers of USPTU, for the most part, consisting of members of the department - M. R. Mavlyutov, A. I. Spivak, A. Popov. N., Alekseev L.A., Konesev G.V., Akchurin Kh.I., Trushkin B.N., Ishbaev G.G., were awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology.
. Based on the results of scientific research, which has found wide application in oil practice, in various years, graduates and employees of the department defended their doctoral dissertations: B.
