Boris Krasnov after a stroke. Boris Krasnov, businessman - biography
Moscow noisily celebrated the birthday of a decorator who is still under investigation
Boris Krasnov, once a key figure in Russian show business, who disappeared from view in 2011, has returned to Moscow. In the capital's Forum Hall, owned by the birthday boy, his return, the tenth anniversary of the banquet hall and the 54th birthday of Krasnov himself were noisily celebrated. The elite of Moscow show business, led by Alla Pugacheva and Joseph Kobzon, gathered for the celebration.
The whole country discussed the story of the famous stage designer, who once staged grandiose shows by Alla Pugacheva, Philip Kirkorov and other stage masters. Four years ago, Boris Krasnov was accused of extorting five million rubles from the Inconnect company. The criminal prosecution could have ended with the most tragic consequences for Krasnov - fifteen years in prison, if not for a severe stroke, which, according to the artist’s lawyer Alexander Dobrovinsky, struck him down and brought him to a coma. Having entered into the position of the accused, the court released Krasnov on bail of five million rubles for treatment and suspended the trial. After this, Krasnov’s traces were lost somewhere in Europe - according to the stories of the decorator’s friends, he was undergoing treatment in Switzerland. Only four years later, the set designer decided to return to Russia.
About a hundred guests came to Krasnov’s celebration. The main table, according to tradition, was given to Alla Pugacheva, who arrived in the company of her husband Maxim Galkin. Joseph Kobzon and Andrei Malakhov were located nearby. Among the guests were other representatives of the creative elite: actor Mikhail Efremov, singer Anzhelika Agurbash, singer Leonid Portnoy. In honor of the birthday boy, Nikolai Baskov, singer Natalie and the stars of the show “The Voice” sang on stage, and Valery Syutkin hosted the celebration.
The set designer himself sat at the table and received a long line of friends who congratulated him on his return. That evening Krasnov had to refrain from dashing dances and rollicking songs from the stage, for which his noisy holidays were famous in past years. This was explained by Boris's physical condition - it is known that after suffering a stroke, Boris Krasnov learned to walk again and experienced problems with speech. Indeed, security guards helped Boris move around the banquet hall, and toasts and words of gratitude to his friends were not easy for him. Most of all, his daughter Darina was happy about the 54-year-old artist’s return to Moscow, posting pictures from the celebration on Instagram; the girl signed them with the tag #Borishas returned.
It is not yet known whether Boris Krasnov will make a loud return to the profession from which he actually left four years ago. The favorite of Russian artists still faces a long period of rehabilitation and an unfinished trial in the Inconnect case, which will soon be resumed by the Ostankino court in Moscow.
Recently, due to the lack of evidence of a crime, a sensational criminal case against the famous designer and set designer Boris Krasnov, accused of extortion of shares in the Inconnect company, was dropped. Previously, it was suspended and then separated into separate proceedings due to Krasnov’s serious illness. In the fall of 2011, he suffered a stroke and was in a coma, but then began to recover and, with the permission of the investigator, was released for treatment in Germany. The remaining defendants in the extortion case were convicted in November 2013. Currently, the set designer has returned safely to his homeland and is ready to continue his work. Lenta.ru looked into the process and features of this not entirely ordinary case.
Matryoshka dolls from Flower City
The fame of a master of the stage came to Boris Krasnov back in the 1990s, and after the Russian National Exhibition in Paris in 2010, he could have become a living classic. However, his bold stage decision with a round dance of ten-meter matryoshka dolls was not positively assessed by all interested parties. In particular, the set designer’s ideas, according to some sources, were not to the liking of Vladimir Putin, who arrived at the exhibition.
The “Flower City” project from “The Adventures of Dunno” at Expo 2010 in Shanghai was also not entirely successful. Dmitry Medvedev, who was in China on a working visit, was said to be dissatisfied that the expensive decorations did not reflect current topics in the development of nanotechnology and the country's preparation for the Sochi Olympics. The huge pavilion then had to be left to China, since its transportation to Russia could cost one and a half hundred million rubles. As a result, the cost of the project, which already significantly exceeded expectations, increased from the initial 224 million to 1.5 billion rubles.
Tall Raiders
The famous set designer was no longer involved in the preparation of Expo 2012 in South Korea with a budget of 375 million. Perhaps it was precisely because of this that Krasnov did not have a good relationship with the organizers of the Russian part of the exhibition - the Inconnect company of Tatyana Sadofieva and her son Andrei Sadofiev.

According to investigators, Boris Krasnov joined a group of influential people - officials from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, who declared a kind of war on Inconnect.
In July 2011, one of the leaders of this company, Andrei Sadofyev, met with the chief manager of the Magma investment company, Igor Dunaev, in the Rice and Fish restaurant on the second floor of the Udarnik cinema. Sadofiev was offered to buy out 100 percent of the authorized capital of Inconnect's subsidiary, GC Inconnect, which received an order to organize a Russian exhibition at Expo 2012 for $50,000. Otherwise, the company's management expected serious problems from the leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and even criminal prosecution. The deal did not take place, and relations between the parties deteriorated even more.
It was then, it is believed, that Krasnov turned to his good friend Vladimir Kolokoltsev, who in the summer of 2011 held the post of head of the capital’s main department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with a request to take personal control of the Inconnect check. The claims against the company had very real grounds: the financial connection of Inconnect with the Prostor Design company, with the help of which the Sadofyevs may have evaded taxes, was checked.
However, the confrontation between the Sadofyevs and Krasnov’s friends did not last long. By the beginning of autumn 2011, the leadership of Inconnect turned from potential criminals into victims. On September 7, on suspicion of extortion, the former head of the department of foreign economic relations of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Sergei Shilov (later, according to the verdict of the Zamoskvoretsky court, he will receive 8 years in prison), deputy head of the exhibition department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Yuri Bogdanov (sentenced to 7 years in prison), deputy general director of Sportivny information agency of the Russian Olympic Committee" Oleg Litoshenko (sentenced to 7.5 years in prison) and Igor Dunaev, discussed above. The latter received 4 years in prison.
On the same day, September 7, Boris Krasnov himself was detained. He spent two days behind bars and was then released on bail of 5 million rubles.
And on September 22, Krasnov suffered a stroke. Moreover, precisely at the moment when he was discussing the line of defense with his lawyer Imanali Uzalov. The set designer was urgently taken first to Pervaya Gradskaya, and then to the intensive care unit of the Federal Medical Biophysical Center named after. A.I. Burnazyan. Another patient’s lawyer, Alexander Dobrovinsky, said that Krasnov is in a coma.
Law enforcement officers who visited him at the clinic were also able to verify the reality of the diagnosis. When the patient’s condition stabilized a little, Krasnov was sent by plane to Berlin, and then to one of the clinics in Switzerland. No procedural norms were violated in this case.
If a person is on bail, he even has the right not to seek permission to travel abroad. Boris did not give any undertaking not to leave - the money was deposited, and he could go anywhere,” noted lawyer Dobrovinsky.
Shuvalov's successor and the struggle around the All-Russian Exhibition Center
And the year 2011 began on the brightest note for Boris Krasnov. For his 50th birthday, the decorative artist gathered not only domestic and foreign pop stars, but also “top” officials and businessmen. On January 22, First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, future Minister of Internal Affairs Vladimir Kolokoltsev and Sberbank President German Gref were seen celebrating the Krasnov anniversary in the Forum Hall.

Nine months later, the set designer, who had so spectacularly flaunted his lobbying abilities and achievements, became involved in a criminal case of extortion. Perhaps the conflict around the most important national exhibition - the All-Russian Exhibition Center, the former and future VDNKh - played a certain role in this.
Just at the end of summer - beginning of autumn, the issue of candidacy for a new chairman of the board of directors of the All-Russian Exhibition Center was being decided. The powers of Igor Shuvalov, who held this position, expired on October 1. German Gref, former governor of the Kaliningrad region Georgy Boos and Boris Krasnov were considered as his possible “successors”.
The All-Russian Exhibition Center was preparing for a large-scale restructuring, which was contracted to carry out by large capital developers Zarakh Iliev and God Nisanov. As expensive as the project is - the estimated cost is $2-3 billion - it is also risky. It is no coincidence that some observers started talking about “megacherkizon”, remembering that Iliev and Nisanov were involved in the notorious metropolitan flea market, and also own a number of large Moscow shopping complexes.
The role of the chairman of the board of directors and his non-affiliation with the “rebuilders” of the exhibition center in such a situation was difficult to overestimate. Moreover, at that time the All-Russian Exhibition Center did not have a sole owner. Its shares in a 70/30 ratio were distributed between the federal government and Moscow. Such shareholder dual power, in the presence of a friendly or at least neutral board of directors and management, provided almost unlimited freedom of action to develop 300 “exhibition” hectares.
By the way, against the backdrop of the Krasnov ordeals, Alexey Mikushko, the former manager of the hotel business of Iliev and Nisanov, became the general director of the All-Russian Exhibition Center in September 2011. There was a problem with the chairman of the board of directors. Georgy Boos took up this post only in December. But on the other hand, the Year of Nisanov also entered the highest advisory body.
However, as it turned out later, this was by no means the end of the battle for the exhibition billions and hectares. Already in the summer of 2012, Boos gave up his chair to Deputy Moscow Mayor Natalya Sergunina. The business press claimed that the ex-governor did not work well with Iliev and Nisanov.
A funny detail: around the same time in July 2012, Boris Krasnov appeared before the general Russian public for the first time after the initiation of a criminal case and a stroke. He appeared on a talk show on Channel One dedicated to the birth of Philip Kirkorov’s child. The decorator did not give the impression of a seriously ill person: he spoke clearly and distinctly, was in high spirits, and was sitting on the sofa and not in a wheelchair. Filming took place in Ostankino, and not in a Swiss clinic. Although no one officially announced the dropping of the charges against the decorator.
But there are signs that the mayor’s office is taking power at the All-Russian Exhibition Center, hardly solely in the interests of Iliev and Nisanov. Another major developer, the head of the Barkley corporation, Leonid Kazinets, has joined the board of directors of the exhibition center. And in May 2013, by decision of the federal authorities, Moscow received 100 percent of the All-Russian Exhibition Center. At the same time, Iliev and Nisanov received the go-ahead to build an aquarium on its territory, the largest in the European part of the Russian Federation.
A little later, in the fall of 2013, businessmen announced their intention to build two hotels with 600 and 400 rooms. But these plans were in doubt.
In April 2014, Alexey Mikushko ceded the position of general director to Vladimir Pogrebenko, Sergunina’s former subordinate in the capital’s property department. And as a result, Vozrozhdenie All-Russian Exhibition Center LLC, controlled by Iliev and Nisanov, commenting on its plans, mentioned only the aquarium and the creation of a children's leisure center.
It seems that the hotels do not really correspond to the image of the All-Russian Exhibition Center-VDNKh that Moscow officials have formed. At least, Natalya Sergunina is talking about a park, a museum town, a sports cluster, but not about the concentration of retail and office real estate.
Quiet return
Meanwhile, Boris Krasnov again went into the shadows, trying not to come into the view of the press. We only managed to find out that the decorator returned safely to his homeland and even started work. In particular, singer Elena Vaenga mentioned this in an interview with radio “Chanson” in October 2014.
The investigative authorities - the Internal Affairs Directorate for the Central Administrative District - could not find out about the prospects for further investigation of the criminal case against Krasnov. However, lawyer Lyubov Trushina told reporters that the case had already been closed due to the lack of corpus delicti in Krasnov’s actions.
This news was received with hope by Dmitry Chesnov, the defense lawyer of the already convicted defendant in the Inconnect case, Sergei Shilov.
A lawyer's request has been prepared to familiarize himself with the resolution to terminate the criminal prosecution against Boris Krasnov. I think the arguments contained there can be used to justify my client,” the lawyer told Lenta.ru.
However, a few days later, news came from the Supreme Court that it had refused to submit his cassation appeal for consideration. The department did not see any grounds for reviewing the Inconnect case. Therefore, the former “accomplices” of the famous stage designer will remain behind bars.
Boris Krasnov himself, in an interview with Kommersant, said that he was satisfied with the way the investigation ended: “I am not guilty and have always said so. Did you really think that it could have been different?”
While visiting Pugacheva, the famous set designer develops a beastly appetite
While visiting Pugacheva, the famous stage designer develops a beastly appetite
I have known Boris KRASNOV since the mid-90s. Like many of his friends, I was shocked when three and a half years ago the famous production designer was unexpectedly detained and charged with serious charges. Allegedly, he was part of a group of people who extorted 100 percent of the shares of the authorized capital from the Inconnect company, which organized exhibitions. Krasnov faced up to 15 years in prison. During the investigation, he was released by the court on bail of 5 million rubles. But literally two weeks later he was struck down by a severe stroke. Since then, information about him has been extremely scanty and fragmentary. Like, he was in a coma, then he was transported abroad...
When I managed to reach him a year ago, Boris said that he had already returned to Moscow, was continuing treatment and, as soon as the doctors allowed, he would be the first to give an interview to me. To Boris's credit, he kept his word.
And so I go into his office in the brainchild he created - the Forum Hall celebration hall. Krasnov When he meets me, he cheers up and takes a few steps, leaning on his cane. His assistant Sergei insures him.
- Of course, readers are primarily interested in your health!- Thank you, I am recovering slowly. I can walk, though, with difficulty. The left hand is not yet in working condition. I had a right-sided stroke, so most of the problems were with my left arm and leg. By the way, if it were left-handed, we wouldn’t be talking now. Fortunately, the memory was not affected either. I'm having fun here - I ask my assistant to name me any football team from the USSR football champions and easily name all the players, including the substitutes.Well, with your rhythm of life, you got off easy. I remember how you worked. Almost no days off. Have you been to a sanatorium at least once in your life?
What a sanatorium! Jumped up at six in the morning - and go! My family and friends all asked me: “Slow down!” Mikhail Tanich, may the kingdom of heaven be upon him, on each of my birthdays he wrote an epigram: “Krasnov is a thing in speed somewhere between the speed of sound and the speed of light.” Or here’s another: “There was no order twice, and Borya was at home twice. / How can I check this libel? And by the number of children!” I practically did not take care of my health. I smoked two packs a day. I drank 35 cups of coffee... - I know that in difficult times Pugacheva provided you with great moral support. You have a special relationship with Alla Borisovna? - Yes, we have, as they say, a creative romance. Anything happened between us. It happened that my scenery was destroyed with a microphone. One minute she likes everything, but after a couple of minutes she screams - redo everything. It seems to me that sometimes Alla is unpredictable to herself. We still often call her back. A month ago we had dinner together - at her home, with Maxim, in their castle. You know, it’s an amazing thing - Alla, no matter where she lives, has such an atmosphere in her house that she eats very well, she’s just overcome with some kind of hunger! Whatever she cooked, I always swallowed it right away! Very tasty! By the way, I ate her cooking not only at her place, but also at my place. I noticed that Alla is not always serious when it comes to cooking. I remember a long time ago they came to see me with Sergei Chelobanov spontaneously. Alla took everything that was in the refrigerator, poured it into a pan, threw cheese on top, and when it melted, please bring it to the table - the dish is ready. And she dedicated it to me and Chelobanov...
By the way, a month ago I saw Max and him for the first time. They are simply wonderful! This is some kind of fantasy - I have never seen such a resemblance: Garik is just a copy of Max. Facial expression, eyes, lips, nose - one to one. Such a serious boy. And Lisa is just a doll, such a blonde with a pink bow and curly long hair.
- Did you give anything to the children?
Of course, but how? Garik - a car-bicycle. You press the button and it takes you. And Liza has this big thing: you press it and something plays, beeps, crows, speaks English. But most of all she was delighted to see a doll that brushes its teeth. You know, watching Alla look with great tenderness at her two angels - Garik and Lisa, I thought that, probably, only now, perhaps, for the first time, she truly felt what it's like to be a mother. At one time, when Christina was growing up, she had a monstrous touring schedule, she was constantly running around with concerts. I also couldn’t devote much time to my grandchildren. And only now he spends as much time with the kids as necessary, and gets tremendous pleasure. I recently organized a prank for the guests. Guests on his birthday (January 22, Krasnov turned 54 years old. - OK. ) reported that during his illness he constantly watched news abroad. And one piece of news struck me so much that my head turned around and I, they say, began to engage in something unusual for me - writing songs. And he dedicated one of them to Alla and Max. It comes out here Natalie and sings: “Oh God, what a man, I want a son from you. And a daughter!” Everyone burst out laughing.
Oh, I remembered! Borya Moiseev told me: when he had a stroke, the cutlets that Alla Borisovna personally fried for him and brought to his ward helped him a lot!
This is true. And many people helped me too. Although, of course, I don’t remember well the first time after the stroke - I was in a coma for too long, almost three months. Borya, as far as I know, was not in a coma. That’s also probably why it’s taking me so long to recover now. My wife became my guardian angel - she did not leave the bed for a minute. And, without a doubt, my best friend and partner - Konstantin Petrov, for which I am very grateful to him. When the doctors were asked what the percentage chance was that I would live, they shrugged: none. Special thanks, first of all, to Russian doctors. In particular, to the head of the neuroreanimation unit of the clinic where I was hospitalized - Pavel Härkenen. After I came out of the coma, it was decided to continue treatment abroad. At first it was a clinic in Germany - I spent six months there. The forecasts of German doctors were disappointing. They said that I would not only never be able to walk, but even sit in a chair. But I still did not lose heart - I continued to believe in miracles.
After another six months, we were advised to change the clinic. I was brought to Montreux, Switzerland, on a stretcher. Every day I worked for many hours with physiotherapists - by the way, they are all Portuguese, very good specialists who literally force the patient to get up. Nothing moved, not even my feet.
When I started moving my legs and shoulders, it was my first victory. Then he learned to get out of bed and transfer to a wheelchair. The pain was terrible, as if everything were grinding you into two. But after a few months I took the first step. For almost three years, being treated in Western clinics without insurance would have been unthinkable without the financial support of friends, and besides this, for example, Joseph Kobzon And Alla Pugacheva helped to find good specialists. They visited me in a Swiss clinic Valera Syutkin, Igor Krutoy, Sasha Fayfman. My beloved mother and father also often visited, creating a truly homely environment for me.
The investigation is over, forget it!
I think these terrible accusations of extorting a controlling stake from the Inconnect company, which all the newspapers wrote about at that time, could also affect your health...
Rather, it became a kind of finishing point. After all, before this we had an incredibly difficult project - preparing the Russian Pavilion for the World EXPO 2010 in Shanghai. Among five hundred exhibitions in terms of attendance, our pavilion took first place and second place for the best presentation of the theme “Better city - better life.” It's like winning the Grand Prix at the Oscars. But, despite such enchanting success, there were constantly some groundless attacks from some media that drove me into a frenzy - they were so unfair and dishonest. And this story with my alleged participation in extortion... Of course, it was terribly offensive that I, a person who had done so much for the USSR and Russia over 35 years, organized many of its landmark projects, fifty percent of which were at the government level, was accused of which I didn't do.
For the first time in my life I found myself in the unusual role of a suspect! Naturally, I was internally wounded by all this injustice; I wouldn’t wish anyone to go through such accusations. Stroke, translated from Latin, means “offense.” As I know from the words of my assistant, this happened during the day, right in the office. Fell, lost consciousness...
When I fell ill, the criminal case was separated into separate proceedings and suspended. No investigative actions were carried out on him. But the investigation was always notified where I was, at what stage my treatment was at. After being discharged from the hospital, the investigation was resumed.
As a result of an objective investigation in December 2014, a decision was made that there was no crime in my actions. Of course, I did not doubt for a second that everything would end this way. However, like all my friends. Lolita, for example, when they questioned her, she kept repeating: “What are you doing?! This is a man who can only give - he cannot take anything away! - What do you want more than anything in the world at this second?- Drink and smoke! But this is absolutely forbidden. After the stroke, I did not drink a single drink or smoke a single cigarette. And - I won’t. I want to live. And I look into the future with optimism. After all, they left me in this world for something - probably for something good. Essentially, I am living a second life now. Indeed, the signal given was too serious. In order for a revaluation of values to occur. And it certainly happened.
Boris Arkadyevich Krasnov is a Russian artist, set designer, producer, honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts, member of the Union of Theater Workers of Russia, eight-time laureate of the national Ovation award. Boris was born on January 22, 1961 in Kyiv in the family of the head of the department of the Elektronmash enterprise, Arkady Aleksandrovich Roiter, and the chief fashion designer of the Kiyanka knitting factory, Nata Borisovna Roiter. During the war, Boris's parents were evacuated to Kazakhstan and the Perm region, Boris's grandfather died at Babi Yar.
Until the age of 12, Boris attended modeling and drawing classes in the studio of the Kyiv Palace of Pioneers. After graduating from the Republican Art Secondary School in 1979, he entered the Kiev State Art Institute at the Faculty of Painting, specializing in “theater decorator” in the workshop of the People's Artist of the USSR Daniil Leader. As a second-year student, Boris made his debut with the production of “Romeo and Juliet” at the Kiev Pantomime Theater, which ran on stage for five years. In the same year, the artist changed his surname to a pseudonym.

At the international forum, which took place in Shenzhen in mid-May 2010, the name of Boris Arkadyevich was among the top six best exhibition designers in the world.
In the fall of 2011, a scandal erupted with the publication of the fact of extortion of a large sum of money from the Inconnect company by Boris Krasnov’s group. A criminal case was opened, in which the famous designer became a defendant. At the end of September, due to strong emotions, Boris Krasnov suffered a stroke, after which the left side of the artist’s body was paralyzed. For treatment, the designer was sent to Germany, then to Switzerland, where doctors put the patient into a coma to reduce brain swelling. After his condition returned to normal, Krasnov moved in a wheelchair for a long time, and in 2014 he returned to his homeland, where he gradually began to get back on his feet.
Personal life
The personal life of Boris Krasnov has not been subject to any changes for many years. The artist has long been married to Evgenia Krasnova, a former model and. The married couple raised two children - the eldest daughter Darina and son Daniil.
The bride and wife are not a relative of Boris Arkadyevich, they are namesakes. During the rehabilitation of Boris Krasnov, his wife was next to him. Largely thanks to Evgenia, Boris’s health has returned to normal.
Boris Krasnov now
Now Boris Krasnov has again begun to appear at social events. At the request of his long-time friend Philip Kirkorov, the artist made sketches for the scenery of the artist’s anniversary concert.

Excerpt characterizing Krasnov, Boris Arkadevich
“There are people just like us, and there are people worse than us,” she thought.Peronskaya named the countess the most significant people who were at the ball.
“This is the Dutch envoy, you see, gray-haired,” said Peronskaya, pointing to an old man with silver gray curly, abundant hair, surrounded by ladies, whom he made laugh for some reason.
“And here she is, the queen of St. Petersburg, Countess Bezukhaya,” she said, pointing to Helen as she entered.
- How good! Will not yield to Marya Antonovna; Look how both young and old flock to her. She is both good and smart... They say the prince... is crazy about her. But these two, although not good, are even more surrounded.
She pointed to a lady passing through the hall with a very ugly daughter.
“This is a millionaire bride,” said Peronskaya. - And here are the grooms.
“This is Bezukhova’s brother, Anatol Kuragin,” she said, pointing to the handsome cavalry guard who walked past them, looking somewhere from the height of his raised head across the ladies. - How good! isn't it? They say they will marry him to this rich woman. And your sauce, Drubetskoy, is also very confusing. They say millions. “Why, it’s the French envoy himself,” she answered about Caulaincourt when the countess asked who it was. - Look like some kind of king. But still, the French are nice, very nice. No miles for society. And here she is! No, our Marya Antonovna is the best! And how simply dressed. Lovely! “And this fat one, with glasses, is a world-class pharmacist,” said Peronskaya, pointing to Bezukhov. “Put him next to your wife: he’s a fool!”
Pierre walked, waddling his fat body, parting the crowd, nodding right and left as casually and good-naturedly as if he were walking through the crowd of a bazaar. He moved through the crowd, obviously looking for someone.
Natasha looked with joy at the familiar face of Pierre, this pea jester, as Peronskaya called him, and knew that Pierre was looking for them, and especially her, in the crowd. Pierre promised her to be at the ball and introduce her to the gentlemen.
But, before reaching them, Bezukhoy stopped next to a short, very handsome brunette in a white uniform, who, standing at the window, was talking with some tall man in stars and a ribbon. Natasha immediately recognized the short young man in a white uniform: it was Bolkonsky, who seemed to her very rejuvenated, cheerful and prettier.
– Here’s another friend, Bolkonsky, do you see, mom? - Natasha said, pointing to Prince Andrei. – Remember, he spent the night with us in Otradnoye.
- Oh, do you know him? - said Peronskaya. - I can’t stand it. Il fait a present la pluie et le beau temps. [It now determines whether the weather is rainy or good. (French proverb meaning that he is successful.)] And such pride that there are no boundaries! I followed my daddy's lead. And I contacted Speransky, they are writing some projects. Look how the ladies are treated! “She’s talking to him, but he’s turned away,” she said, pointing at him. “I would have beaten him if he had treated me the way he treated these ladies.”
Suddenly everything began to move, the crowd began to speak, moved, moved apart again, and between the two parted rows, at the sound of music playing, the sovereign entered. The master and hostess followed him. The Emperor walked quickly, bowing to the right and left, as if trying to quickly get rid of this first minute of the meeting. The musicians played Polskoy, known then by the words composed on it. These words began: “Alexander, Elizabeth, you delight us...” The Emperor walked into the living room, the crowd poured to the doors; several faces with changed expressions hurriedly walked back and forth. The crowd again fled from the doors of the living room, in which the sovereign appeared, talking with the hostess. Some young man with a confused look stepped on the ladies, asking them to move aside. Some ladies with faces expressing complete obliviousness to all conditions of the world, spoiling their toilets, pressed forward. The men began to approach the ladies and form Polish pairs.
Everything parted, and the sovereign, smiling and leading the mistress of the house by the hand, walked out of the living room door. Behind him were the owner and M.A. Naryshkina, then envoys, ministers, various generals, whom Peronskaya kept calling. More than half of the ladies had gentlemen and were going or preparing to go to Polskaya. Natasha felt that she remained with her mother and Sonya among the minority of ladies who were pushed to the wall and not taken in Polskaya. She stood with her slender arms hanging down, and with her slightly defined chest rising steadily, holding her breath, her shining, frightened eyes looked in front of her, with an expression of readiness for the greatest joy and the greatest sorrow. She was not interested in either the sovereign or all the important persons to whom Peronskaya pointed out - she had one thought: “is it really possible that no one will come up to me, will I really not dance among the first, will all these men who are now not notice me?” It seems they don’t even see me, and if they look at me, they look with such an expression as if they were saying: Ah! it's not her, there's nothing to watch. No, this cannot be! - she thought. “They should know how much I want to dance, how great I am at dancing, and how much fun it will be for them to dance with me.”
The sounds of the Polish, which continued for quite a long time, were already beginning to sound sad - a memory in Natasha’s ears. She wanted to cry. Peronskaya moved away from them. The Count was at the other end of the hall, the Countess, Sonya and she stood alone as if in a forest in this alien crowd, uninteresting and unnecessary to anyone. Prince Andrey walked past them with some lady, obviously not recognizing them. Handsome Anatole, smiling, said something to the lady he was leading, and looked at Natasha’s face with the same look as one looks at the walls. Boris walked past them twice and turned away each time. Berg and his wife, who were not dancing, approached them.
Natasha found this family bonding here at the ball offensive, as if there was no other place for family conversations except at the ball. She did not listen or look at Vera, who was telling her something about her green dress.
Finally, the sovereign stopped next to his last lady (he was dancing with three), the music stopped; the preoccupied adjutant ran towards the Rostovs, asking them to step aside somewhere else, although they were standing against the wall, and the distinct, cautious and fascinatingly measured sounds of a waltz were heard from the chorus. The Emperor looked at the audience with a smile. A minute passed and no one had started yet. The adjutant manager approached Countess Bezukhova and invited her. She raised her hand, smiling, and placed it, without looking at him, on the adjutant’s shoulder. The adjutant manager, a master of his craft, confidently, leisurely and measuredly, hugging his lady tightly, set off with her first on a glide path, along the edge of the circle, at the corner of the hall, he picked up her left hand, turned it, and because of the ever-accelerating sounds of the music, only measured ones were heard the clicks of the spurs of the adjutant’s quick and dexterous legs, and every three beats at the turn, his lady’s fluttering velvet dress seemed to flare up. Natasha looked at them and was ready to cry that it was not she who was dancing this first round of the waltz.
Prince Andrei, in his colonel's white (cavalry) uniform, in stockings and shoes, lively and cheerful, stood in the front rows of the circle, not far from the Rostovs. Baron Firgoff spoke with him about tomorrow's supposed first meeting of the State Council. Prince Andrei, as a person close to Speransky and participating in the work of the legislative commission, could give correct information about the meeting tomorrow, about which there were various rumors. But he did not listen to what Firgof told him, and looked first at the sovereign, then at the gentlemen who were getting ready to dance, who did not dare to join the circle.
Prince Andrei observed these gentlemen and ladies timid in the presence of the sovereign, dying with desire to be invited.
Pierre walked up to Prince Andrei and grabbed his hand.
– You always dance. There is my protegee [favorite], young Rostova, invite her,” he said.
- Where? – asked Bolkonsky. “Sorry,” he said, turning to the baron, “we’ll finish this conversation somewhere else, but we have to dance at the ball.” “He stepped forward in the direction that Pierre pointed out to him. Natasha’s desperate, frozen face caught the eye of Prince Andrei. He recognized her, guessed her feeling, realized that she was a beginner, remembered her conversation at the window and with a cheerful expression on his face approached Countess Rostova.
“Let me introduce you to my daughter,” said the countess, blushing.
“I have the pleasure of being an acquaintance, if the countess remembers me,” said Prince Andrei with a polite and low bow, completely contradicting Peronskaya’s remarks about his rudeness, approaching Natasha and raising his hand to hug her waist even before he finished the invitation to dance. He suggested a waltz tour. That frozen expression on Natasha’s face, ready for despair and delight, suddenly lit up with a happy, grateful, childish smile.
“I’ve been waiting for you for a long time,” as if this frightened and happy girl said, with her smile that appeared behind the ready tears, raising her hand on Prince Andrei’s shoulder. They were the second couple to enter the circle. Prince Andrey was one of the best dancers of his time. Natasha danced superbly. Her feet in ballroom satin shoes quickly, easily and independently of her did their job, and her face shone with the delight of happiness. Her bare neck and arms were thin and ugly. Compared to Helen's shoulders, her shoulders were thin, her breasts were vague, her arms were thin; but Helen already seemed to have a varnish on from all the thousands of glances sliding over her body, and Natasha seemed like a girl who had been exposed for the first time, and who would have been very ashamed of it if she had not been assured that it was so necessary.
Prince Andrei loved to dance, and wanting to quickly get rid of the political and intelligent conversations with which everyone turned to him, and wanting to quickly break this annoying circle of embarrassment formed by the presence of the sovereign, he went to dance and chose Natasha, because Pierre pointed him out to her and because she was the first of the pretty women to come into his sight; but as soon as he embraced this thin, mobile figure, and she moved so close to him and smiled so close to him, the wine of her charm went to his head: he felt revived and rejuvenated when, catching his breath and leaving her, he stopped and began to look on the dancers.
